Journeys of discovery and active experiences of the natural world

WELCOME There’s a bright and colourful world out there. Each country is very different and every single client is very special to us. So every holiday we design reflects the need to adapt to the destination and the needs of each client. We listen a lot… Although the Chameleon brochure is intended to inspire ideas for your next adventure, the itineraries you’ll see on these pages are very much the tip of the iceberg. The only limit is your imagination, so if there’s something you really want to do, we’ll make it happen. You could be an experienced traveller looking for a more unusual trip, or new to the idea of having someone else help you plan your journey. Either way, we’re here to do the work (and make it easy for you). A tailor-made trip doesn’t have to mean high-end luxury, although we take great care to select the best accommodation for its location and charm. And it doesn’t have to mean high expense either; we’ll create a trip that fits with your requirements, your interests and your budget. What it does mean is that we’ll arrange a trip just for you, on the date you want and for as long as you want it. Travel safe in the knowledge that our team here and our carefully selected in-country partners have taken care of every detail, so that you can focus on the important things - like relaxing or maybe getting active; having new experiences or discovering old ways of life; losing yourself in a bustling city or re-discovering nature… Adapt to the colourful world of Chameleon.

who travels tailor-made? “We travel because we need to, because distance and difference are the secret tonic of creativity. When we get home, home is still the same. But something in our mind has been changed, and that changes everything Jonah Lehrer, author and blogger, 2010.

Chameleon tailor-made travellers come in all different shapes and sizes. You might be retired and free to travel as and when you please (in between weddings, Christenings and commitments to the grandchildren); busy at work trying to research your first trip to South America; pondering your second trip to a favourite destination; or planning an adventurous but comfortable honeymoon. You might be travelling with your partner or friend, on your own or with your family and children (whatever their ages). We organise trips for a great variety of people. A tailor-made holiday means doing it your way and ensuring your precious time is well spent.

We are proud of our clients for demonstrating strong responsible travel traits and for maintaining our reputation as a company promoting sustainable travel practices. Therefore, we encourage all our travellers to... Reduce, re-use and recycle Limit purchase of plastic water bottles (consider treating water, or buying a big bottle and refilling smaller ones), reduce waste and use recycling systems where they can be found. save energy Turn lights off in hotel/lodge rooms, unplug chargers and turn off A/C when not in use. animal welfare Enjoy watching wild animals in their natural environment without feeding or touching, and avoid purchasing or eating the products of endangered species.

Rather than taking sweets or balloons that can be harmful to teeth and the environment, we work with local community projects that encourage guests to donate much needed school supplies and clothing. COSTA RICA “The cloud forests have incredible hiking trails and a huge variety of birdlife. Getting up early in the morning to search for a resplendent quetzal was one of the highlights of my trip.” Dan Painter, Travel Specialist, 2015

Nature lovers will be thrilled with Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity and varied terrain. Adventurers will enjoy rafting, zip-lining and walking. All will appreciate the wide choice of accommodation, including excellent eco-lodges and boutique hotels.

J

ourney times are relatively short throughout Costa Rica, allowing you to travel easily between bird-filled cloud forests, mangrove swamps, active volcanoes, bubbling mud-pools, steaming rainforests and the Caribbean or Pacific coastlines. Along the way, you may spot the resplendent quetzal as you walk through the jungle canopy; you might see nesting turtles and, with a lot of luck, even catch a glimpse of the elusive jaguar.

Seek out turtles, monkeys, caimans and Costa Rica’s national bird - the quetzal. We have combined must-see destinations with some of the less visited corners of the country. As always, we can adapt this trip to fit with your interests and requirements.

our SUGGESTED itinerary This itinerary is just one of many options available. INTO THE RAINFOREST Following a night in the capital San Jose, travel to Sarapiqui, an area of highly biodiverse rainforest. A couple of nights here will see you explore Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve or float gently downriver on an inflated tube, observing monkeys, birds, iguanas, and river turtles along the way. see the TURTLES OF TORTUGUERO A journey by road and boat takes you to Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast. Costa Rica has an extensive choice of accommodation and a wide range of activities on offer, particularly suited to nature lovers. Benefit by booking well in advance, especially during UK holidays, to secure your first choice of hotels and lodges.

El Remanso Lodge, Osa Peninsula

Trogon Lodge, San Gerardo de Dota

Bosque del Mar, Playa Hermosa

On the wildlife-rich Osa Peninsula, this lodge has just a small number of rooms and suites - all of a high standard, especially taking into account the remote location and excellent ‘eco-credentials’.

The lodge is nestled close to the small settlement of San Gerardo, in an area of cloud forest by Los Quetzales National Park. With rustic, comfortable accommodation, this is an ideal base from which to explore.

A charming boutique style beach-front hotel with an idyllic mix of gardens, trees, clear ocean waters and soft sand. Relax in the jacuzzi, cool off in the swimming pool and make use of the dive centre.

What makes it special?

The stunning setting just back from a rugged, jungle-clad beach. The surrounding 185 acre reserve offers excellent wildlife viewing with monkeys, sloths and anteaters all present.

What makes it special?

The area around the lodge offers a less visited alternative to Monteverde – giving you a better chance of spotting the country’s most famous birdlife, including the quetzal.

COLOMBIA “High above the beautiful Magdalena canyon, strange faces were carved into the rocks 5,000 years ago. Little is known about the civilisation responsible for the extraordinary petroglyphs and statues that scatter the hills and valleys of San Agustin. Sitting in the sun at the base of a rock, I wondered about the ancient people who would have sat here in this same magnificent spot.” Lyn Hughes, Founder of Wanderlust Magazine.

Colombia offers unrivalled variety. You can travel from snow-capped volcanoes to the tropical lowland rainforested river valleys in just a few hours. Colonial Cartagena on the Caribbean coast is a real highlight, but there is so much more…

T

he coffee country, with its traditional towns and lush hillsides, contrasts with the wild beaches and rainforest of Tayrona National Park. There are a wide range of small, characterful hotels throughout Colombia. In the more remote regions, accommodation is of a simpler standard in keeping with the surroundings. In certain areas, such as Tayrona and Providencia, it’s best to book early to secure the best locations. There are opportunities throughout the country for trekking, snorkelling, boat trips and more depending on your desired activity level.

Deep Blue, Providencia

Casa San Agustin, Cartagena

Ecohabs, Tayrona

Deep Blue is a hotel on the island of Providencia, reached by air or boat from neighbouring San Andres, itself a flight from the Colombian mainland. The island is extremely unspoilt and laid back.

Within Cartagena’s beautiful walled old town, Casa San Agustin is a luxurious boutique hotel that has been lovingly restored from colonial era buildings. Rooms feature a blue palette accented by natural fabrics and dark woods.

A collection of cabins scattered over the jungle-clad mountainside that leads down to the wild beaches of Tayrona National Park. The furnishings are of a high standard and rooms are cooled by the evening breeze.

What makes it special?

The hotel is spread over a hillside giving views across clear waters to tiny Crab Cay. Kayaks can be used to paddle to the island and peaceful beaches are close by.

What makes it special?

The charm, comfort and luxury at Casa San Agustin make this the perfect place to return to following a day exploring the city.

Peru

Peru ACCOMMODATION & highlights Peru is home to a wonderful array of accommodation options including colonial buildings that have been restored into boutique hotels and excellent eco-lodges in the rainforest. There is a fascinating history to discover and multiple opportunities for adventure activities, such as white-water rafting, cycling, trekking and kayaking.

Arts Boutique Hotel B, Barranco, Lima

Refugio Amazonas, Amazon Basin

Inkaterra La Casona hotel, Cusco

The hotel is an example of a Belle Epoque mansion, originally built as a summer seaside retreat. It is set in Barranco, an artistic area close to specialist shops, restaurants, and the Pacific ocean.

Just a few hours from Puerto Maldonado by boat, find this idyllic 32 room eco-lodge. Excursions include walks into the forest, boat trips, caiman spotting and visits to oxbow lakes and clay licks that attract local wildlife.

This colonial building based on Inca foundations has been sympathetically restored to its former glory. It has every modern comfort, as well as marble fireplaces and antique furnishings.

What makes it special?

The location and style are different to most of Lima’s hotels, with more character and a different angle on a city. The handful of rooms are luxuriously decorated and have every creature comfort.

What makes it special?

Enthusiastic and knowledgeable nature guides lead small groups of up to 10 people. Special programmes are offered for families and soft adventure activities like tree climbing and kayaking are possible.

What makes it special?

Located right in the heart of Cusco, La Casona feels more like an exclusive private house than a hotel. With a highly regarded small restaurant and exceptional service, your every whim will be catered for.

TRAILS OF THE INCAS

Follow in the footsteps of the Incas; trek the Classic Inca Trail or opt for a more comfortable experience on the Lares Trail. Both routes offer a challenging and exciting way to reach Machu Picchu.

AMAZON AND GALAPAGOS ADVENTURE Take a four-night trip into the Amazon, visiting the remote Huaorani community with a chance to camp for a night in the jungle. Then spend six nights exploring the Galapagos, staying on three different islands to walk, bike, canoe and snorkel. This trip is far from a standard experience - you’ll explore Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands from your bases on land rather than by cruise-vessel allowing you greater freedom to explore your surroundings.

our SUGGESTED itinerary This Land-Based itinerary is just one of many available. ANDES TO AMAZON Arrive into Quito and spend the first days exploring Ecuador’s capital. The adventure really begins as you travel along the dramatic Avenue of the Volcanoes and down to the town of Baños from where you take a light aircraft flight to the Amazon jungle. MEET THE HUAORANI Spend three nights at the Huaorani Lodge run by the local tribe. The Huaorani are fun-loving and invite you to immerse in their culture and customs. FLOREANA LAVA LODGE, GALAPAGOS

GALAPAGOS SAFARI CAMP, GALAPAGOS

Floreana Lava Lodge is one of the few places to stay on Floreana Island, the smallest of the inhabited islands. The lodge is family run and has an excellent location a stone’s throw from the sea.

First of its kind on the Galapagos, Safari Camp follows the African tradition where guests enjoy total comfort under canvas. The camp sits on a farm on a ridge in the Santa Cruz Highlands.

What makes it special?

The views of the surrounding countryside from this organic farm are fantastic – the place is great for the active or those who wish to relax in peaceful surroundings.

gALAPAGOS BY LAND AND SEA No matter how you do it, a trip to the Galapagos will be a memorable and special experience. With many options to explore by land or sea, deciding on an itinerary can be a challenge. For the best advice, please consider the following information and then contact us and we’ll create you the ideal itinerary. Cruises are the most common way to visit, but landbased trips are also an excellent option – or perhaps even combine both.

our SUGGESTED itineraries These itineraries are just two of many options available. GALAPAGOS CRUISES A cruise is the classic way to experience the islands and options range from three to 14 nights in length, from modern, luxurious vessels to simpler, more traditional boats. On board, you can always expect high quality guides and attentive service. Longer trips visit more islands while the shorter itineraries take in a few of the key highlights, always making the most of your time. LAND-BASED TRIPS There are four islands on which it is possible to stay on land – Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Isabela and Floreana. You can travel between them by air or boat. Visiting two or more islands over the course of a few days will show you varied landscapes and a rich variety of wildlife. Land-based trips are ideal for those who wish to be active, with longer walks possible than from a cruise, as well as biking, canoeing and plenty of snorkelling. Trips are more flexible too – and can be adapted to include the activities you most enjoy.

What to expect

You’ll have a number of landings planned on your Galapagos cruise giving you time to walk around. A cruise provides an excellent balance between exploration, adventure and relaxation.

Ecuador & Galapagos

CRUISING THE GALAPAGOS

A TYPICAL DAY From your cruise, you will usually make a couple of landings each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Landings can be wet (disembarking into shallow water), or dry, and are usually from inflatable boats called zodiacs. ACTIVITIES On each landing, you’ll have the time to walk and explore, spend time close to fearless wildlife, and take photographs. Snorkelling and kayaking are also options on a number of islands. WHAT WILL I SEE? A lot! Seabirds such as blue footed boobies, albatross and penguins, sea lions, iguanas and giant tortoises to name just a few. The cruise itineraries all ensure you see as much as possible during your time. If you have any specific interests please let us know.

How to choose your cruise-vessel You can choose between sailing vessels and motor boats. The smallest boats take around 14 passengers, with the largest accommodating more. Smaller boats will suit those who are looking for personalised service and an intimate atmosphere. Larger boats of course offer more space and facilities, and can be a better choice if you suffer from sea-sickness. The options below are just a small selection of the boats you can choose:

A few of our vessels beagle

Beluga

Named after HMS Beagle, on which Charles Darwin made his famous voyage. This traditional 105-foot sailing boat was built in Woolwich in the 1970s. She has teak decks and seven functional cabins with upper and lower berths. The Beagle is a great value option and an authentic Galapagos cruise experience.

Accommodating up to 16 guests, the Beluga is a mid-range, small ship. Featuring panoramic windows in the salon, airconditioning throughout and a spacious sundeck for relaxing and sightseeing. The Beluga is a fantastic way to cruise the islands in speed and style.

Letty, Eric & Flamingo

Eclipse

These three sister ships are near identical and travel together, each accommodating just 20 guests. The boats are a high quality midrange option. Special departures aimed at families with teenagers or younger children are offered during holiday periods.

One of the best ships sailing in the Galapagos, this stunning motor yacht offers top levels of comfort and service. The Eclipse accommodates 48 passengers – an ideal size for an expedition-style adventure in an intimate and comfortable atmosphere.

AXUM AND GONDAR Travel on a short flight, or a long but interesting road journey, to Axum. This is where Ethiopians believe the Ark of the Covenant is located, protected within a sanctuary. Pre-Christian inscribed granite monoliths can be seen here too. Onwards to Gondar to explore castles and palaces.

BLUE NILE & LAKE TANA Visit the falls of the Blue Nile where the 100 metre wide river plunges down onto the rocks below producing mist clouds and rainbows. Travel to Bahir Dar where Lake Tana and its many islands - most with their own church - awaits. Finally, fly back to the capital and then head home.

Morocco “Trekking in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco was incredible; away from the crowds with friendly locals and a culture that’s not changed in millennia.” Sharon Salmons, Chameleon Worldwide client, Morocco, 2015

Just three and a half hours flight from the UK, Morocco feels like another world. The Atlas Mountains are dotted with traditional Berber villages and the warm Sahara Desert is the domain of camels, dunes and oases.

T

he medina of Marrakech is a riot of colour, markets, narrow alleyways and lively people. The Djemma el Fna comes alive at dusk with acrobats, jugglers and snake-charmers. Essaouira is a picturesque and laid-back port on the Atlantic coast. Morocco has many other towns and cities of note – Fez, Meknes, Taroudant and Chefchaouen being just a few.

The Chameleon Morocco Experience

our suggested itinerary - SOUKS, MOUNTAINS & SEA This itinerary is just one of many options available. EXPLORE RIADS AND SOUKS Fly to Marrakech. Spend three days exploring the city from a riad close to the medina. Wander the narrow streets leading to busy souks. Sit back and enjoy a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice in the Djemma el Fna while watching a very colourful world go by.

intO THE ATLAS MOUNTAINs Leave the city behind and head up into the High Atlas Mountains just a short drive away. Stay in a spectacular restored Kasbah on the edge of a Berber village. Take daily walks into this incredible mountain range with a local guide.

RELAX IN ESSAOUIRA Head for the coast. Essaouira is a compact old fishing port, easy to explore on foot and makes for a relaxing end to a trip. Watch the blue fishing boats coming in and out, the waves crashing or ride a camel on the beach. Return back to Marrakech for your flight home.

STAY IN A DESERT CAMP

Spending a night under the stars in the Sahara is sure to be a memorable experience. Sleep in a simple camp among the dunes and travel by the ship of the desert - the camel.

Polar Regions

The Chameleon arctic and antarctic Experience We have selected some of the best vessels and partners in the Arctic and Antarctic. With particular emphasis on smaller vessels, and on itineraries that maximise time spent exploring on land, you’ll make the most of your time in these special places.

polar Experiences wildlife With polar bears roaming the Arctic, penguins in the Antarctic, whales, seals, walrus, sea lions and rich birdlife – the poles are fantastic for nature enthusiasts. landscapes Icebergs, glaciers, mountains, fjords, vast oceans and even volcanoes await in the polar regions. Trips in search of the aurora borealis add another dimension to these landscapes. activities You can walk, snowshoe, camp and kayak on some trips. You don’t need to be super-fit to visit the polar regions. history Visit scientific bases, old whaling stations and sights frequented by explorers. The polar regions have a rich history of human endeavour.

A range of vessels operate in the polar regions. The smallest boats take around 20 passengers, with the largest accommodating up to 120. Smaller boats will suit those who are looking for an intimate atmosphere and a real adventure. Larger boats suit those who seek more space and facilities, or those who suffer from sea-sickness. Here is a selection of some of our favourites:

NOOrDERLICHT

REMBRANDT VAN RIJN

This two-masted schooner carries 20 passengers. Rerigged and refitted in 1991, the Noorderlicht is capable of sailing the seven seas. The captains have a great experience of the oceans. The vessel is not an ice breaker but has a strengthened bow. The Noorderlicht operates in the Arctic.

Rebuilt and refurbished in 2011, this characterful three-masted schooner takes 33 passengers and is an ideal base for expeditions among small islands. The two inflatable rubber craft (zodiacs) enable landing and wildlife viewing opportunities in otherwise inaccessible areas. The Rembrandt Van Rijn operates in the Arctic.

ORTELIUS

PLANCIUS

The Ortelius originally served the Russian Academy of Science. Now it is a comfortable 120 passenger ship offering expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic with hotel style accommodation. Ortelius can travel through solid year-old sea ice and loose pack ice enabling travel to very remote locations.

Plancius is a former Dutch research vessel that was converted in 2004 and is now a comfortable exploration ship carrying up to 116 passengers. It is equipped for kayaking, snowshoeing, field camping and ski trekking. The Plancius operates in both the Arctic and Antarctic.

A TYPICAL DAY in the region Flexibility is the key to expedition cruising with weather, ice and sea conditions affecting exactly what you do and where you go. Each cruise itinerary is different – but all will see you make regular landings often with the opportunity to walk, snow-shoe and, in Antarctica, camp out overnight. In the evenings or during days at sea there are talks from experts in their field. best time to go In Antarctica, the season is from October to April (summer there is in our winter). In the Arctic it depends on the focus of your trip, with possibilities during several different periods of the year with special polar bear and whalewatching departures. price guideline 9 days in the Arctic including flights from £1,800 per person.

the arctic The Arctic isn’t so much a place as an idea. It’s not a continent, a country, even an island - just the contents of a circle drawn on a map, empty of big cities, tall forests or soaring mountains. Yet, there is something incredibly special about this place of polar bears, icebergs and whales. We can arrange a variety of different trips in the Arctic. Whale safaris, sailing and snowshoeing in Greenland, circumnavigation of Spitsbergen, polar bear specials and voyages in search of the Northern Lights. Cruises are typically seven nights upwards in length.

our SUGGESTED itineraries These itineraries are just two of many options available. GREENLAND WHALE SAFARI Sail among the enormous icebergs of Disko Bay, an inlet on Greenland’s west coast. These nutrient-rich waters draw in many whales and sightings are frequent - from humpbacks arriving in spring to feast on squid, fish and krill, to minke and huge fin whales. It’s the thrill of spotting the Greenland (or bowhead) whale that’s the big draw, a creature that spends all year in Arctic waters and can live to be 200 years old. You’ll also visit the sites of settlements dating back up to 4,000 years, and see colonies of Arctic birds. AROUND SPITSBERGEN Discover the long history and incredible wildlife of the remote Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Setting sail from Longyearbyen, navigate beneath cliffs thronged with birds - little auks, guillemots, puffins and Arctic skuas, and explore fjords. Watch for ringed and bearded seals on ice floes, look out for Greenland whales and belugas, and see (and probably hear and smell) walrus colonies. There are opportunities for walks on shore, visiting historic trappers’ cabins and ruined whaling stations.

ARCTIC & Antarctic

Antarctica Antarctica is often described as the last great wilderness on earth. This land of mountains and glaciers is home to much wildlife including penguins, seals and whales. Expedition cruises will see you exploring the white continent on daily landings with optional camping, kayaking and snow-shoeing experiences. Most trips start from Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego, cross the Drake Passage then explore the South Shetlands and Antarctic Peninsula. We can also offer cruises into the Weddell Sea to South Georgia and the Falklands.

our SUGGESTED itinerary This itinerary is just one of many options available. BUENOS AIRES TO ANTARCTICA Fly out to Buenos Aires where you spend a night before travelling to the southern tip of Argentina. You have a couple of days in and around the town of Ushuaia with walking and canoeing trips in Tierra del Fuego National Park. Board your expedition vessel and sail along the Beagle Channel, past Cape Horn and out into the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage, which you sail for two days. EXPLORING THE ANTARCTIC PENINSULA Once you reach Antarctica, there are excellent opportunities for exploring on foot, zodiac and kayak. Walkers can use snowshoes near the shoreline. Mountaineers can ascend hills and ridges further inland - such as 540 metre Jabet Peak. Spend a couple of days in the area with the opportunity to camp out if you like. WHALES, PENGUINS AND GLACIERS Sail through the Lemaire Channel to islands such as Pleneau and Petermann - home to Adelie penguins and blue-eyed shags. Humpback, minke and fin whales are sometimes found here too. Land at Neko Harbour to see glaciers and beautiful landscapes.

For a classic safari destination Kenya always delivers with the Maasai Mara, the Great Rift Valley lakes and stunning Indian ocean beaches.

COMBINE TWO OR MORE COUNTRIES Many of our clients choose to combine destinations and we have organised trips from two weeks to over three months in length. A visit to the spectacular Inca ruins at Machu Picchu in Peru can be combined with a cruise around the wildlife-rich Galapagos Islands. Couple the lush cloud forests of Costa Rica with Nicaragua’s colonial towns and volcanic landscapes. For a true trip of a lifetime, voyage to Antarctica and then defrost in Brazil. Explore Indochina in depth and visit Halong Bay and Hanoi in Vietnam; then discover Angkor Wat in Cambodia or take a cycling trip into Luang Prabang in Laos. How about exploring Ethiopia’s historic sights and then heading to exotic Zanzibar for some beach time? Or top off a safari in Zambia with a visit to the shores of Lake Malawi or a sojourn in the wildlife-rich Okavango Delta in Botswana? The possibilities are endless.
