Taiga Forests Adventure

2013 is set to be an excellent year for the northern lights.

Go wild in the forests of Finland Look for bears in Finland’s taiga forest.

Lapland: Northern Lights Special Be awed by the aurora in remote Finland Take charge of a husky scooter Hike and bike in the wilderness Learn forest survival skills Go bear-watching Unwind in a Finnish sauna This adventure is all about having fun while experiencing the vast, remote, wildlife-rich Finnish taiga. We start with husky sledding. Well, there’s no snow, so it’s actually huskies pulling wheeled scooters along the forest trails. Great fun! Then, on foot and by canoe, we head for a lake island and (with our guide) try to fend for ourselves for the night, building shelter and foraging for supper. We’ll also cycle through the taiga to a farm on the Russian border, to look for bears and more. We finish with the fun Finnish Wilderness Olympics: a chance to put all your new skills to the test!

See the aurora in the wilderness Drive a husky sled Witness the wonder of Lapland Warm up in saunas each night Have lots of snow fun!

According to NASA, 2013 is going to the best year in decades for auroral activity. And we think we’ve found the ideal place to watch it. Our base is a remote hotel high above the Arctic Circle that even Laplanders describe as the middle of nowhere. With little light pollution and long periods of darkness, it’s ideal for watching the northern lights. On this trip, view the aurora by snowmobile, on snowshoes, laying on a frozen lake or by an open fire in a warm, glass-roofed hut. During the day there’s more snow fun to be had: board a sled to drive your own team of huskies, go cross-country skiing or head off on snowshoes to discover more of Lapland’s ethereal wilderness.
