When John Chambless took the keys to his father’s firm, he did so with a dedication to people — to picking up the phone when it rings and meeting with each client directly.

00—Visioning This foundational step quickly explores and defines a project’s scope through compelling imagery and diagramming.

These tools enable clients to clearly present design possibilities to a broad audience from an early stage and are essential when a project depends on external funding and support.

01—Predesign During the predesign phase, we get to know our client, their dreams, their goals, and the true purpose behind the project.

We listen. We apply our experience and instinct to outline the project, create a budget estimate, and establish an early timeline. Benchmarks are set with regular check-ins to ensure each project phase is correctly executed and final expectations are exceeded.

02—Schematic Design With an understanding of the client, we develop conceptual solutions and design options that respond to the project’s requirements and goals. Ideas come alive as we create accurate three-dimensional models and virtual reality studies to easily explore design options, the arrangement of spaces in and around the building, proportions, building materials, lighting, and furnishing options. These models assure client expectations are aligned with design solutions and the project budget.

03—Design Development Once design decisions are made with the aid of visualization tools, development of the final design begins. The HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, electrical power, lighting, AV, sound, data, IT, and structural systems are merged with the architecture to provide a cohesive final design. Project teams proactively check feasibility and ensure each element satisfies the project’s narrative, budget, and goals.

Detailed architectural imagery is updated for final approval as the project schedule is refined.

04—Contract Documents Contract documents are created with technical working drawings and specifications fully describing the architectural and design plans. Regulatory approvals are secured and quantity survey estimates confirm budgets to allow the competitive bidding process to begin.

05—Bidding & Negotiation The bidding process maximizes project value. Whether through a construction manager or design-bid-build model, the goal of this critical process is to yield the best results for our clients.

The project team oversees the public or private advertisement of bids and logs and evaluates each bidder’s response.

The team presents recommendations to

the client to secure the highest quality, lowest cost general contractor for the work and assists in finalizing all necessary agreements, bonds, and certificates.

06—Construction Administration No matter the construction phase length, we regularly meet with the client and general contractor on site to ensure the project is being constructed in accordance with the plans and specifications. We evaluate and make recommendations for any proposed change, cost increase, or delay request. There are strict processes for management of this work that are incorporated in the project specifications and assure work proceeds in an efficient, well-documented, and timely fashion.

07—Performance Assurance Any hidden defects in the construction will most likely appear during the first year of operation. We remain proactive and on-call to coordinate with the contractor to make certain issues are properly addressed and resolved. At the end of the first year of operations, we return for a final construction inspection to certify the building is operating as intended.

12—13 Selected Work — Auburn University Broun Hall

The former design and layout of Broun Hall limited student interaction with a lack of common spaces, compartmentalized circulation zones, and minimal access to daylight. Compounding the poor space planning was the use of dark and dated materials.

The heavy, Brutalist exterior of the original building lacked an identity and connection to the rest of campus. Further, it did not openly address the heavy student traffic coming off the adjacent concourses or provide exterior gathering spaces for students.

Terracing the site down to the building addition allows the sub-grade first level access to daylight and views while also creating exterior lounge spaces and ADA access. The upper level, a glass box perched over the site, now serves as the direct connection from the Ginn Concourse via a gracious exterior stair spanning over the lower terraces.

Atriums were created to further extend daylight to the lower level and visually connect the lounge and study areas between both floors. In the interior hallway, a large skylight was carved out of the existing roof structure over the new atrium below. The newly exposed existing concrete beams acknowledge the intervention to the original structure.

Horizontal fire shutters and fire-rated glazing were used to navigate the limitations of code where transparency and visual communication were key design components. This included large sections of glazing inserted into the original brick corridor walls giving the classrooms and conference rooms access to light and a visual connection to the more public spaces.

24—25 Selected Work — Montgomery Interpretive Center

The Montgomery Interpretive Center exists to memorialize the people, events, and route connected with the 1965 civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery. The third of three interpretive centers stretching the 54-mile route, the project is located adjacent to the Alabama State University football stadium along a corner block that serves as a gateway into campus.

The design navigated the site’s steep topography by setting the larger exhibit volume into the ground and terracing the ground plane along the main facade to the entry. The building form mimics the unique wedge shape of the site by using voids to create exterior spaces. A grand covered porch allows for exterior gathering space and entry into the building.

The primary elevation is designed to capture the spirit of the march through an 18-foot-tall limestone facade with a sandblasted relief pattern replicating an iconic image of the event. The angle of the halftone pattern reinforces a sense of movement and the rough crater-like relief in the smooth stone creates a tactile experience as one walks past. Black zinc cladding accentuates the strong roof line while the angular cedar soffit and louver wall reinforce the entry sequence of the building. Micro-perforated zinc panels are paired with wood louvers at the main entry porch to create a sense of enclosure while creating a layered transparency.

The 12,756-square-foot, fully hardened facility provides a comfortable working environment and access to natural light while protecting occupants from winds up to 200 mph. The previous DeKalb County emergency facility was located underground without exterior views. Chambless King’s design directly addresses this challenge with a unique interplay between shelter and light.

An all-glass interior wall creates a feeling of openness and extends daylight from the dispatch room into the main corridor. The screened, glass box lobby links private and public areas and serves as a pre-function space for a multi-purpose meeting room that doubles as a public tornado shelter.

Simple building forms were used due to structural code requirements for tornado shelters. Stacked stone cladding gradually increases in scale to reinforce the sense of mass and shelter. The use of local stone also provides balance to an otherwise unfamiliar architecture.

Perforated weathering-steel screens add a layer of shelter to large areas of impact-resistant glazing. The perforation pattern is designed to mimic dappling through tree canopies when light is cast into and onto the building.

A concrete border and manicured lawn extend the building’s shape into the rural landscape with a clean edge. The horizontal architecture and landscape contrast the adjacent 300-foot-tall communication tower.

The City of Montgomery purchased 29 Dexter in hopes of restoration. The building, formerly the Montgomery Fair department store and workplace of Rosa Parks, remained in disrepair from a 1984 fire. As the building became structurally unsound due to surrounding lot development, however, the City decided to create a public alley in its stead.

Though the original historic building facade was failing and required removal, it was recreated using reclaimed materials from the original. The new facade maintains its historic urban edge and serves as the entry to the new pocket park.

Instead of redefining the space left after building demolition, the design sought to strategically insert a public surface into the existing ruins, not touching the rough building remains except where needed for access and spill-out from adjacent spaces. This surface folds to create integrated seating and to navigate level changes. The perimeter grade remains depressed, and large swatches of tall grasses and perimeter lighting recessed below the deck reinforce its separation from the original context.

52—53 Selected Work — LogiCore Corporate Headquarters

LogiCore, an innovative Huntsville-based logistics and information technology firm, desired a new corporate headquarters that would reflect their identity while providing creative and compelling spaces to meet and work.

The project is located on a corner lot in Cummings Research Park adjacent to a large pond. Program necessitated two separate buildings — a two-story primary building containing event and employee amenity spaces on the ground floor and office space above and a one-story secondary building with leasable office space and warehouse. The primary building is oriented with long faces north/south for optimal daylighting and prime views of the water and surrounding landscape. The secondary building lies perpendicular, creating an “L” with the primary to enclose a large green space between the buildings and water.

The project embodies the company’s “readiness accelerated” slogan in its visual language and massing.

Stacked angular forms slipping over and under each other create a sense of movement as one experiences the building. Rectilinear extrusions in these forms create clear entries into the building and exterior balconies.

The exterior material palette of cast stone, zinc panels, and wood-printed metal soffits clearly define the building forms.

Large, smooth expanses of structural-glazed storefront and curtain wall emit abundant daylight into the building and amplify the dynamic formal composition with uninterrupted reflections.

This architectural language translates into the building through the materials themselves, extending in through expanses of glazing and similar subtle angular geometries exploited in the interior space-making throughout.

The Sand Mountain Park & Amphitheater has been a vision of the City of Albertville for over 20 years. The primary goal of this 130-acre park is service to the community, but its economic viability is set to create an impact of over $120 million a year and generate labor income of $35 million annually through 1,200 job opportunities.

The project’s master plan specifically addressed existing challenges in venue, activity, and entertainment opportunities for all citizens while providing a robust sports tourism component to significantly contribute to the park’s operational income. The park is 97% accessible and allows those with special needs to participate in physical athletics, including playgrounds and a Miracle Field with AstroTurf fully accessible for wheelchairs.

There are 14 separate synthetic sports fields for year-round baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer, and football recreational use and tournament play. Four clay courts have been added for tennis players of all ages, along with 12 hard courts for regional tournament play and pickleball. A disk golf course weaves between the sports fields, RV park, dog parks, and over four miles of hiking and riding trails.

The centerpiece of the park is the 100,000-squarefoot multi-purpose recreation center. The center includes 30,000 square feet of basketball, volleyball, and racquetball courts that can be converted into a community arena capable of seating 2,000.

A one-eighth-mile elevated, two-lane running track bridges the arena to 10,000 square feet of fitness space.

Food and beverage service options, meeting spaces, storage, daycare, and administrative areas are also located within the recreation center. The indoor and outdoor aquatics programs are joined to the center and feature a splash pad, lazy river, recreation pool, and 8-lane indoor competition pool.

An 8,000-capacity amphitheater caps the park with a stage designed to host national entertainers and support the 300-member Albertville High School Aggie Band.

Auburn University Advanced Structural Engineering Laboratory Auburn University’s innovative College of Engineering envisioned one of the country’s most capable structural design labs. The project will provide 47,000 square feet of state-of-theart engineering testing capability using modern structural testing equipment. The LEED-certified design comprises testing areas — including a 30-foot-tall strong wall, strong floor, and geotechnical test chamber — fabrication and workshop spaces, and office areas for research engineers, faculty, and graduate students.

The combined use of concrete, steel, and heavy glulam and CLT timber construction demonstrates different structural systems, while exposed mechanical, plumbing, and electrical throughout demonstrate the common building systems. The high-bay lab features a unique displacement ventilation system to efficiently condition only the occupiable zone of the laboratory. A rainwater harvesting system and storm water basins exhibit best practice rainwater management techniques.

The project consists of a 225,000-square-foot casino, various restaurants including a 300-seat buffet, an award-winning 160,000-square-foot AAA Four Diamond hotel, over 6,000 square feet of meeting space, an entertainment center with bowling alley and 8-screen state-of-the-art movie theatre, a spa, and an outdoor amphitheater.

The complex provides a luxury resort and gaming experience that hosts nationally recognized entertainers year-round.

Alabama State University Stadium

The new ASU stadium is one of the most technologically advanced professional and college stadiums in the country. Completed in November 2012 for the annual Turkey Day Classic game, and at a cost of just over $62 million, the stadium and its 64-foot highdefinition scoreboard can be seen from the interstate near downtown Montgomery.

The stadium seats 26,500 fans and was built to allow for future expansion of up to 55,000 seat capacity. The ASU Hornet Stadium has 200 loge seats, 750 club seats, two party terraces, 20 luxury box suites, and a stadium club lounge available to all premium seating. The facility offers team meeting rooms, a coach conference room, and players’ lounge. ASU stadium features other amenities which allow this venue to be used year-round, including administrative offices, multiple locker rooms, state-of-the-art media capabilities, interview and broadcasting areas, merchandise store, and restaurant. This venue has the capacity and potential to anchor concerts and band competitions, and to host other sporting and tournament events.

Alabama State University Residence Hall This four-story, contemporary co-ed residence hall provides living spaces for 500 students. The hall has single and double bedrooms and features suite-style accommodations with bathrooms.

Each floor also includes study rooms and food preparation areas.

Selected Work

The design of this project enhanced the ongoing development of the campus fabric. Brick was paired with the zinc facade to relate to the surrounding campus context, and the building layout and landscaping created new pedestrian plazas and green space for students.

Chambless King Architects Office Renovation

The Montgomery office of Chambless King Architects is located on the third floor of the Teague Hardware Warehouse Building. Built in 1895, the building boasts three stories of timber framing with a masonry facade, 15-foot ceilings, and large punched windows. Chambless King Architects renovated 3,400 square feet to accommodate an open studio for design and production staff, meeting spaces, and private offices for principals.

The design solution focuses on the relationship between historic and new materials while taking advantage of natural daylighting. The original exposed brick and beams complement the open-office furniture in the studio space while a reclaimed-wood accent wall in the entry contrasts large glass doors. The conference room was designed around the unique angular shape of the building and has sweeping views of the riverfront.

The Mill

The 145-unit apartment project is an adaptive reuse of seven historic brick structures built between 1848 and 1957, as well as several ancillary steel structures. The space is aimed at supporting and expanding the economic growth of Prattville’s revitalizing downtown. Complex amenities include a clubhouse, fitness center, business center and community room, event space, pavilions, courtyards, and green space.

Restoring and repurposing an 1850s mill into a modern apartment complex required innovative financing, including an Alabama Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit, Federal Historic Tax Credit, EPA Brownfields grant, floodplain mitigation through the ADECA Office of Water Resources, and a HUD 221(d)(4) mortgage.

Chambless King navigated the complex regulatory system that evolved from each component of the capital stack to ensure the final design met all requirements.

The design was crafted in close collaboration with historic consultants and the National Parks Service to preserve the historic integrity of the site. The design also strategically utilized existing steel structures to create visually dynamic exterior amenities, including covered parking and pavilions.

The over 150-year span of original construction is illustrated through an evolution of design techniques and architectural styles. To maintain historic conditions, the interior design kept much of the original structure exposed. The development now features over 70 unique floor plans that offer a wide range of views to the creek, dam, downtown, or public spaces.
