We are a little late in getting issue #9 out after an extended Christmas break brought on by an office Covid scare.

But like the rest of the country we are nothing but resourceful and are old now hands at Zooming and ‘WFH’.

As I write this, normality is just about back in the Diggers LIVE offices, which is handy as I will be off to Las Vegas on Sunday for the annual World of Concrete event. I should be able to get some great footage of construction kit from across the pond as well as some on the spot interviews, all of which will of course be featured in the March issue.

Diggers LIVE is now into its third calendar year and as my upcoming trip to North America demonstrates, we really want to get out and about even more and meet you, your products and people.

We were blessed to be able to get out when we could last year, enjoying a tour with Thwaites, a full showcase with Molson and a handful of awards dos and meetings. Now my brand manager (the other) Ben is rapidly filling up his, Toby’s and my diaries with site visits but there is always an opportunity for us to come see you. Please let us know.

In this issue we have an extensive preview of the Executive Hire Show together with a column by Kevin Minton of the Construction Plant-Hire Association on how the industry can play its part in reaching carbon net zero.

Blue Central appointed MDS distributor Blue Machinery (Central) Ltd has been appointed as MDS distributor in northern and central England, along with north Wales. MDS, A Terex Brand, is a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty rock trommels and conveyors.

The company, which was acquired

by Terex MPS back in July, was founded in 1995 and over the last 25 years has built a reputation for innovation, offering

MANULIFT joins Hyundai Material Handling network Hyundai Material Handling is continuing to expand its French network with the arrival of a new dealer specialising in forklifts.

MANULIFT is now responsible for sales, leasing and repair of HYUNDAI forklifts in the Alsace region in the north-east of France.

Manulift was founded in 2013 by Salim Mankour, who has extensive experience in the sale of industrial trucks of all tonnages, having held various posts in materials handling.

The company, which is situated 45 miles from Strasbourg, offers forklifts between 1.5 and 16 tonnes, employs six staff and covers a radius of around 60 miles.

Currently based on a site of 300 m², Salim will rely on his great experience of forklifts to develop the brand in the region and among his customers in small and medium enterprises.

JCB celebrates double victory at National Apprenticeship Awards JCB has scooped top honours in the prestigious 2021 National Apprenticeship Awards.

As well as JCB being crowned Macro Employer of the Year, Engineering Apprentice Nihal Dhillon was named Rising Star of the Year. To add to the celebrations, Quality Engineer Gavin Archer was Highly Commended in the Advanced Apprentice of the Year category.

Early Career Talent Manager, Neil Fowkes collected the Macro Employer of the Year award on behalf of JCB at the event in London. He said: “We are very, very proud. It is great recognition for the apprentices and their mentors and coaches, our network of training

providers and, also, for the support we receive from the company and our Chairman, Lord Bamford.”

The competition, which is now in its 18th year, has been designed to recognise and reward the achievements of exceptional apprentices, as well as apprenticeship employees and champions.

JCB beat off competition from co-finalists Lloyds Banking Group and the Royal Navy to win its award.

Nihal, 20, is in the third year of a four-year Engineering Degree Apprenticeship at JCB and works at the company’s World HQ at Rocester.

He said: “It feels fantastic to have won this award, and to be recognised for all the hard work. I think these awards are

really important to showcase the amazing young talent we have in this country across all schemes.”

Gavin, 32, passed his Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship with Distinction earlier this year and is now working as a Quality Engineer at JCB Earthmovers in Cheadle, Staffordshire. He said: “When asked the age-old question ‘where do you see yourself in five years?’ I would never have envisaged myself in this position.

However, this goes to show what you can achieve with hard work and determination to get yourself in the best position possible. This truly has been a great way to round off my JCB apprenticeship.”

THE EQUIPMENT ENGAGEMENT Sam Malins Sam is an Essex based businessman and CEO of Dunmow Group, a group of companies working in waste management and fire suppression. Passionate about getting business right for the team and customers, Sam has always strived to run a group of businesses that are unique and stand out from the competition

Q

How did you start out in the industry?

I had no experience in fire suppression before Fireward. My business partner Ed Barnes and I just had experience in the industry we targeted, waste management, which I’ve been in since 2003. My father had a small skip company, which he was going to close down. I’d been selling cars for two or three years and I wanted something that I could get my teeth into and grow. So I said, “Look, give me a crack it and I’ll have a go,” and that was it. I was young and ambitious so we won a few big contracts, and now Dunmow Group is Essex’s largest construction waste management company.

Q

And how did Fireward and its system come about?

So, I’d been in the waste management industry since around 2003 and in 2010, we spotted a gap in the market for what we called the Ford of fire suppression.

We’d had an issue on the waste management side of the business that needed fire suppression. There were some very expensive fire suppression products available, so we looked for a system that would fit the gap in the market. The one we found was pneumatic, so it required no power to operate. If it has pressure in the system, when there’s a fire it will put the fire out. It sits in a stable state for years and requires very little maintenance.

We found a system manufacturer that could supply us and we worked with that company for about four years until we bought a competing company. We wanted to develop the product specifically for vehicles and heavy duty machinery.

We didn’t actually take on our first salesperson until 2013 and we actually became UK market leader in about 2017. Now we’ve got big customers like EMR, Biffa and Veolia. And then all the manufacturers really, so JCB dealers around the country, Liebherr, Liebherr Rental, CAT Finning – we are their main supplier.

industry for a long time. Now we’re looking at other sectors such as civil engineering and mining. We’ve pioneered in waste and recycling and now we’re looking at pushing into other industries.

Q

Tell us more about Fireward. What is its philosophy as a company and how do you operate?

Fireward’s philosophy is to keep it simple. Our systems have one moving part to activate and that is what keeps the reliability of the system. It’s called a pressure loss system. The system has a pneumatic detection tube and as soon as the fire hits the tube, it releases the pressure and lifts the valve. The contents of the cylinders releases through the

discharge network and extinguishes the fire. We also want to make the system look good, like it’s a part of the OEM machine.

Our vision is customer service and quality of the products. That is what our customers can expect. We want to be up there as the best of the best. That’s something we’re passionate about.

We are a very customer focused company with short lead times to install.

Being from the waste industry, we understand the importance of downtime.

Some companies, especially smaller transfer stations and satellite transfer stations, operate with one machine on site. We understand how critical it is to get that machine up and running as quickly as possible.

The total Fireward team is about 20. There are engineers on the road, a technical engineering team, a sales team and the operations team taking the orders from the sales team.

We cover the whole of the UK and have 12 vans strategically located around the country. The engineers are based from home which means we can get out to our customers quickly.

Q

So what does your day-to-day activity consist of?

If you look at this week, it’s business development. I’m dealing with the new distributor out in Dubai. It’s potentially a very large contract. And people. I spend my time trying to find great people to

add to our business, to allow us to keep growing. Also, if we’re making any big decisions, I probably spend about a quarter of my time looking at businesses to add to the group. And then just problem solving.

Q

Do you have a range of products that have different levels of protection or work in different ways?

Definitely. We offer a single agent product, a dry powder system that matches or beats the performance of other dry powder or wet chemical systems.

Dry powder systems are quite straightforward to explain. Our dry powder is an ABC powder (suitable for Class A, Class B and Class C fires). So when you’ve got hot parts of the engine

like the turbo or manifold, it bakes on to that and prevents reignition.

Both of the two different single agents have their strengths and weaknesses so the cream of the cream is a dual agent system.

That is powder and an AFFF foam (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam). Our foam is fluorine free, so that is quite a standout feature. All of our testing is done with fluorine free foam, which puts us ahead of a lot of our competitors.

Another standout feature is that we have a pneumatic battery isolator. We install a normal in-line battery isolator to the standard machine one and then we have a pneumatic isolator that we’ve developed that basically slides over that and holds the power in. The second that

there is a fire, we pull the power for the whole machine. That stops the machine dead and prevents any reignition if the fire is electrical.

Q

How do you see Continuous Professional Development?

We are looking at it in greater focus coming into 2022. We really understand the importance of training as the business matures. We do a quarterly training day with all our engineers in a location where the engineers have got an interest.

For example, we’ve been to Rolls Royce, Duxford aerodrome, JCB and Mercedes World. We try to do it once a quarter but through COVID has been a bit more difficult. >>

We’re there for the full day and spend half a day giving an update on what the company is doing and training on new products that are coming in. We then spend a couple of hours looking around what other companies do from an engineering point of view.

Q

How do you see the onset of electric powered machines? Does that change how your products will work?

It does. We offer a 3M Novec system, which is a clean agent system. What that means is, on the electric machines we can protect any of the control panels or any important areas.

The main risk on diesel machines is hydraulic hoses or diesel lines bursting across the turbo or manifold. We don’t have that risk on electric machines so the risk is lower, however, there are certain risks we protect. If we move on to electric buses and lithium-ion fires, the manufacturing side of our business, which does all the design and development, is looking at options and undergoing testing for vehicle battery fires.

There’s a big wave coming in the industry for fire suppression in battery vehicles. There’s a lot of people saying they can do different things, but there’s still a lot of testing that needs to be done.

Q

Can you tell us about any of Fireward’s standout projects?

We’re fitting out 16 Royal Navy Archer Class patrol and training vessels around the UK and Gibraltar at the moment.

We’ve got the Dunmow Group in Essex; there’s Fireward, which operates across the UK; and then there is Reacton, which is global. Just before COVID we opened offices in Phoenix Arizona and Dubai. We’ve just won a big project in Australia to supply over 200 buses and

we’ve just signed a partnership in the UAE that will concentrate on buses, plant and machinery.

For me, my standout things are the global presence that we’ve achieved, having started off, as I would call myself, a skip man.

Running a plant rental business requires constant management. After all, staff must track fleet maintenance while compliance has to be up to date. Unfortunately, this can lead to a common problem, as found by British hire company, Emmitt Plant.

“Our previous hire system was starting to slow us up with its limited functionality,” says Luke Findlay, Emmitt Plant’s Director. With more than a thousand assets across three depots, the company enjoyed steady growth. The only issue was that its management system was holding it back.

“We didn’t feel that future development was going to meet our needs,” Luke adds.

“We needed a system that could grow with our business.”

Emmitt Plant wanted intuitive software that could allow users simultaneous access to its many parts, plus a workshop module with a business intelligence dashboard and comprehensive reporting suite. The software also had to work with their Exchequer accounts to grow with the business. Finally, and just as importantly, Emmitt Plant required first-class aftersales support.

Countdown to net zero carbon

The UK government’s plan to be net zero carbon by 2050 includes the challenging goal of achieving a 68% reduction by 2030, rising to 78% by 2035. To help achieve these targets, it’s vital that the construction plant sector and the wider construction industry pull together to collectively drive a significant reduction in carbon emissions. Without cooperative work, the government’s ambition to ‘Build back better, faster and greener’ will just become ‘Get greener gradually’.

CO2nstructZero is the Construction Leadership Council’s response to the government’s plan. It sets out to help bring people and organisations together to consolidate collective actions and plans for the sector to help maximise the impact the sector can make.

At the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA), we’re fully committed to working on the transformational change programme required to meet the challenges that society and government expect from our sector.

Firms operating in a competitive market have historically been reluctant to share ideas or to take risks and have been often focused on achieving the lowest hire rate. However, such attitudes

are changing as more realise the need for improvements to achieve net zero. The supply chain may find itself talking to representatives from ESG (environment, social and corporate governance) departments who focus on different areas than traditional construction issues.

Procurement policies are changing from focusing purely on price and shift towards quality, performance and environmental benefits.

But long-term views are required.

HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) as a drop-in diesel replacement fuel is getting a lot of attention, but it is seen by government and policy makers as being an intermediate measure to enable internal combustion engine plant to continue to be used until alternative, fully renewable zero carbon energy technologies are developed and are also commercially viable.

HVO also needs to be sourced responsibly and sustainability, otherwise the efforts of the purchase and end user will do no more than displace emissions and other harmful ESG consequences upstream in the fuel production process.

For medium term policy developments to be fully informed, it is important to obtain reliable, real-world data to give a baseline for comparisons, rather than relying solely on theory or laboratory results. Research into emissions from diesel machinery on construction sites shows the current benefits of using HVO, but also sets it in context with regard what it cannot deliver with typical machines in the current hire fleet.

Construction plant hire companies are not inventors and should not be

expected to be researchers or developers, but they can enable customers to choose and use equipment more effectively. A first approach is to look at user habits.

Many operators keep machines idling unnecessarily – to look busy, or to keep warm on cold days. Behavioural changes – whether brought about by training, incentivisation or improved working environment, have been shown to bring about real measurable savings.

Telematics can have a crucial supporting role in providing information about how and where machines are being used and ensure that planned service schedules are adhered to. However, the real value comes from simplifying the analysis of the wealth of data, and providing meaningful measurement for management controls.

The road to net zero carbon is a high priority at CPA. We have become a partner in the CO2nstructZero programme, and are recruiting a Technical Officer to work full time on net zero carbon and emissions in the construction plant sector.

When it comes to net zero, we want to be a leader, not a follower, but it’s not just about developing new roadmaps.

We know that many of our members are already doing some great work around net zero and we want to increase the impact and visibility of these activities and share experiences. As well as bringing forward solutions, we have an important role to ensure that proposals and plans are realistic, achievable and evidence-driven.

New technologies, sustainability and safety take centre stage at Executive Hire Show 2022 The EHS team is delighted to confirm that the UK’s premier hire event is back in a big way, taking place on 9 and 10 February 2022 at its established, and newly rebranded home, Coventry Building Society Arena (CBS Arena), formerly known as the Ricoh Arena.

The venue has received a cash injection of more than £7.5 million for a revamp that has delivered a world-class exhibition, event and conference centre. The EHS

will remain largely unchanged – but the organisers have promised that the event will be bigger and better. The EHS event team has confirmed that the main hall has completely sold out, with the Atrium also full.

The compact plant hire and equipment industry is booming.

Infrastructure projects are pushing forward, which has propelled the hire sector to reach new peaks, and the

construction equipment industry is also embarking on the journey to achieve netcarbon-zero by 2050, therefore innovation and investment in new technology, safety and renewables and sustainable solutions, are at an all-time high.

New exhibitor, BISAF Ltd, the UK specialist for emission control on small diesel plant, has introduced a diesel particulate filter designed for the type of smaller machines that are not normally supplied with a filter fitted as standard.

The Particulator (above) has been tested on a machine by an independent automotive emissions test laboratory and was found to give a greater than 99.9% reduction in particulates as well as having a regeneration cycle that cleaned the filter

in conjunction with electric vehicle suppliers, the E10e is based on the design of the top-selling diesel-powered E10z onetonne mini-excavator. The new E10e has the same ZTS profile and identical external dimensions as the standard E10z machine and offers equal or better performance. For example, the E10e offers very low noise levels on site with an LpA of only 72 dBA vs 80 dBA for the standard E10z.

Like the E10z, the E10e is easy to transport. In addition to the access provided by its retractable undercarriage reducing its width to only 710 mm, the integrated foldable TOPS (Tip Over Protective Structure) facilitates passage through openings with low headroom, for work inside buildings and in basements.

Once the excavator is positioned for work, the undercarriage on the E10e can be expanded to 1,100 mm, for maximum stability in all working conditions.

First UK appearance for 7/45 compressor The 7/45 model is one of four new small Stage V portable compressors launched

by Doosan Portable Power at the end of 2021, with free air deliveries from 2.5 to 5.0 m³/min and designed with a focus on simplicity, durability, reliability and transportability.

The 7/45 compressor provides 4.0 m³/min of compressed air at seven bar nominal pressure. Like all Doosan portable compressors, there is a wide range of options and customisations available for the 7/45 to meet customer needs. To illustrate this, the 7/45 on the EHS stand will incorporate an optional 8.5 kVA generator and is aimed at the utilities industry and rental companies serving this sector.

The 7/45 on show also features a Tough Top (polymer) canopy, which is now a standard feature on all the new small compressors. The new easy-toopen canopy creates a fantastic line with the newly designed polymer mudguards and bumpers. Newly integrated LED

lights are also offered as standard for all the machines as well as environmentally important bunded bases. The longstanding metal canopy versions are still available to customers as an option.

There are three more seven-bar models in the small compressor range, including the 7/20, 7/25 and 7/55, with outputs of 2.0, 2.5 and 5.0 m³/min, respectively.

The small compressor range is completed by the new 14/35 higher pressure model providing 3.0 m³/min of compressed air at 13.8 bar.

Leica surveying technology used by Riverlinx on London’s Silvertown Tunnel project 50

The Silvertown Tunnel is a new 1.4 km twin-bore road tunnel in East London, connecting the Greenwich Peninsula and the west Silvertown district under the River Thames. The design includes the road tunnel, as well as 0.6 km of access ramps, maintenance buildings and an above ground road, including a highway bridge and a footbridge.

Due to open in 2025, the Silvertown Tunnel has been designed to significantly reduce congestion in and around the neighbouring 122-year-old Blackwall tunnel. An estimated one million hours are wasted each year by motorists queuing for the old tunnel. The new tunnel is the first major road crossing the River Thames since the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge at Dartford opened in October 1991, and the project will result in a six-fold increase in public transport provision across this area of the River Thames.

In 2016, Transport for London began the tendering process for the construction of the new tunnel. The finalists were shortlisted in 2017 and in 2019 the RiverLinx Consortium was awarded the design, construction and maintenance contract.

CASE STUDY

Design and construction of the Silvertown Tunnel is being delivered by Riverlinx CJV, a joint venture bringing together global expertise from three civil engineering and construction companies: Ferrovial Construction, BAM Nuttall and SK Ecoplant.

Efficiently capture images and measure points One tunnel boring machine (TBM) with a diameter of 12 metres will be used to bore both tunnels. The TBM will launch in Silvertown to bore the first tunnel, then rotate in North Greenwich and return under the River Thames to Silvertown to bore the second. All suitable excavated material will be transported by river to minimise the impact for neighbouring communities and routes.

With more than 600,000 cubic metres of material being excavated, the scale of the project means that the surveying teams required a solution to quickly and efficiently capture images and measure points. SCCS provided and supported the surveying and engineering teams with some of the latest equipment from Leica Geosystems.

The solution that was chosen, the Leica GS18I GNSS RTK Rover, proved to be the most accurate and easy to use GNSS RTK Rover tested for the project.

Using highly innovative visual positioning technology based on seamless integration of GNSS, IMU and a camera, the solution enabled RiverLinx CJV to measure survey grade points in images on-site and in the office and to create point clouds from captured data.

After demonstrations of the GS18I, it became apparent the imaging capabilities could not be ignored. Overly impressed with its ability to capture the required images and measure the points, the team could not only benefit from cost savings but also enjoy the improved functionality and efficiencies.

Hugo Canales, Survey Manager at Riverlinx CJV said: “Key benefits to us with the GS18I with capturing data and setting out has been increasing productivity with our survey crews saving time and costs.”

Designed to measure large amounts of points efficiently, the GS18I allowed RiverLinx CJV to capture images and measure hundreds of points within minutes, often in locations on site which could not be physically accessed. Using images to measure these points, RiverLinx CJV reduced the amount of time they had to spend on-site and cut down on reworks. Once the site was captured, they had every detail measured.

Supporting construction Imaging power has changed the rules of the game. By having the power to measure what they saw, RiverLinx CJV could reach places that they simply couldn’t have done before without switching tools or climbing through obstacles. This gave them greater flexibility in the field, freed up equipment and team members, and maximised productivity.

With construction fully underway with initial excavation, piling supported with continued monitoring of infrastructure, the Leica Viva TS16 total stations, LS10 digital levels and the GS18I are crucial to the project.

Throughout the project, Ben du Preez of Leica Geosystems and the SCCS team have provided training and technical support for all solutions used.

New tiltrotator mode There is a new tiltrotator mode on the control panel in all of the new excavators, which can be selected to ensure an optimised hydraulic flow and helps to maximise the accuracy of tiltrotator work by eliminating back pressure. This new tiltrotator mode is a special two-way flow mode, but it is managed by the EPOS like a one-way flow mode, with direct return to the tank in each direction, to avoid back pressure and increase flow and controllability.

Heavier counterweights The heavy five-tonne standard counterweight on the DX235LC-7 and DX255LC-7 models and even heavier 6.4-tonne standard counterweight on the DX235LCR-7 model contribute to the optimised stability and higher lifting capacities of these machines. The DX235LCR-7 and DX255LC-7 can be further enhanced by new optional heavier counterweights, weighing 7.4 tonnes for the DX235LCR-7 and 5.5 tonnes for the DX255LC-7, respectively. These optional heavier counterweights are particularly suited for working with heavier attachments such as tiltrotators.

of the hydraulic flow rate when both the arm and attachment are working simultaneously, with a new priority valve and an additional hydraulic line maintaining continuous hydraulic flow to the attachment, even when the arm is being used.

Fine Swing function Another standard new feature is the Fine Swing function, which minimises the shaking that a lifted object undergoes at the start or stop of a swing movement with the excavator, to increase the safety of nearby workers and to prevent damage caused by the object falling from the excavator. When Fine Swing activates, the overrun disappears, allowing the excavators to smoothly reach maximum swing speed, while removing the shock from the turn reversal at the moment of stopping, resulting in a smooth stop.

The new excavators also incorporate as standard a new lifting eye that forms part of the casting for the push link for the bucket attachment at the end of the arm. The new lifting eye has a maximum capacity of five tonnes and has a special bush insert to prevent deformation of the lifting hole.

Increased comfort and controllability The state-of-the-art cab on the new excavators excels in terms of spaciousness and ergonomics, taking operator comfort and ease of operation to new levels.

As well as a new high quality seat, the enhanced cab offers more features as standard than other machines on the market, ensuring precision in all applications.

New Stage V engine All of the new models are powered by the latest generation Doosan DL06V six-cylinder diesel engine, providing power outputs of 129 kW at 1,800 RPM, 141 kW at 1,900 RPM and 141 kW at 1,900 RPM in the DX235LC-7, DX235LCR-7 and DX255LC-7, respectively.

The DL06V engine offers a new solution to exceed Stage V regulations without exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), that boosts the quantity of air available during combustion, increasing the temperature of the process and greatly reducing the amount of particulates produced. This is combined with super-efficient DOC/DPF+SCR aftertreatment technology to ensure minimal emissions. Thanks to the new technology, maintenance of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has been greatly reduced, with no maintenance required until the machine has operated for 8,000 hours.

Spc3 Smart Power controls The enhanced fuel efficiency of the DL06V engine in combination with a new hydraulic main valve and the new generation SPC3 Smart Power Controls provides increased fuel saving. There are four power modes (P+, P, S or E) now available on the new models, which help to simplify the operation of the new excavators and can be set in both one-way and two-way working modes.

DoosanCONNECT Telematics System All of the new models are factory-installed as standard with Doosan’s state-of-the-art DoosanCONNECT wireless fleet monitoring system.

The DoosanCONNECT system offers a web-based fleet management solution that is useful for monitoring the performance and security of machines and promoting preventative maintenance. Help Inside the Hard Hat tours the Midlands Help Inside the Hard Hat, the latest awareness campaign from the Lighthouse Construction Charity goes on tour for a week from 7 February, to raise awareness of the charitable support services available to the construction industry, allied trades and their families.

With its mission that “No construction worker or their family should be alone in a crisis,” the tour aims to deliver the message directly to frontline workers along with information about the crucial services that the charity provides.

The five-day tour will visit various locations across the Midlands from 7 to 11 February. The charity is asking companies and sites to contact them if

they would like a visit from the Hard Hat tour team to deliver the charity’s messages directly to those that might need support.

There will also be a range of great prizes and freebies up for grabs.

The tour will be hosted by three familiar faces in the construction industry media and loyal supporters of the charity – Andy Stevens from @andystevenstv, Rob Muldoon @myhpodcast and Matt Dunleavy @d5constuctionltd. Their downto-earth, relatable approach and first hand life experiences are a winning combination sure to make the tour a huge success.

Bill Hill, CEO of Lighthouse Construction Charity said: “There is a marked increase in suicides within the trades, machine operators and our unskilled labour force. Over 50% of this workforce are either self employed, agency workers or on zero hour contracts and are often part of the subcontracted

labour force on our construction sites.

This suggests that communication about the support services we have available are simply not getting through to these workers and they are the ones that need us the most.”

In the UK, two construction workers take their own lives every working day and stress, anxiety and depression account for a fifth of all work-related illnesses.

The charity’s Help Inside the Hard Hat campaign has already helped to raise vital awareness of poor mental health within the industry. Over 35,000 posters have been downloaded and sites across the country have shared the campaign message on site hoardings. The campaign has also seen the Help Inside the Hard Hat message on vehicles, mobile working platforms and cranes.
