Welcome to issue #1 of Asbestos Hub magazine a new, standalone publication from the same team that produces the well-established demolition industry magazine, Demolition Hub. Since the inception of Demolition Hub, we have continued to innovate and from the very start we aligned ourselves with the NFDC, supporting them and their members while creating a positive and reliable media brand and magazine that is enjoyed, is engaging and inclusive of other voices in the industry. Here, we keep that enthusiasm and momentum going with this magazine, dedicated to those that work within or provide services to the asbestos industry. Asbestos goes hand in hand with the demolition industry and we have many existing business relationships with those working with asbestos in one form or another. Their support for this debut issue has been tremendous and I am very thankful. Alongside that, the support from the established asbestos industry has been phenomenal and regular readers of Demolition Hub will see the debuting of a lot of new brands in terms of content, case-studies, interviews and adverts. For that support, old and new, I cannot thank you all enough. The support and thanks don’t stop there. We have aligned ourselves in media association to ACAD (Asbestos Control and Abatement Division) and will be working closely with ACAD Manager Graham Warren to provide news and events to their members as well as offering news and guidance to all in the industry. This leaves me to say a massive thank you to my team for supporting my goals expanding the Hub brand and allowing us to develop and champion all within the asbestos industry. I look forward to making many new friends in this industry and would love to have you involved in issue #2, which will be out in the autumn. Best regards,

Dr Martin Gibson has been a hugely important, well respected and well liked figure within the asbestos industry for as long as most of us can remember, but all that came to an end earlier this year when he retired from his role as Her Majesty’s Principal Specialist Inspector (Occupational Hygiene) of the HSE. Graham Warren, ACAD Manager said: “It’s been a pleasure working with Martin these past eight years here at ACAD and his knowledge and approach will be greatly missed. He has been a central figure to us all over the years and it felt like a great honour to be able to wish him well and a long and happy retirement during our final technical committee meeting.” Dr Gibson has left quite a void. Fortunately HSE planned for this and we now have Sam Lord, Her Majesty’s Principal Specialist Inspector – Occupational Hygiene Technical/Strategic Lead for Asbestos, Waste and Recycling and Metalworking Fluids, taking on this responsibility. Perhaps the most crucial element of Sam’s new role from members’ perspective is that of chairing the Asbestos Network (Formerly ALG) Technical Working Group. This is the group that develops technical guidance such as memos and more recently the appendices to minutes guidance. Here Sam has really hit the ground running with many guidance documents currently under development including: • •
•
Appendix 2/21 Gas and Electrical safety in DCUs Appendix X/XX Personal monitoring, Exposure monitoring and Health records Appendix X/XX Asbestos waste skip suitability
The first of these has been reviewed by manufacturers and is currently with HSE Gas and Electrical specialists for final comment and expected publication. The personal monitoring 6 | AsbestosHUB Magazine
All change at the HSE guidance is currently being drafted. This started out focusing on the back end of this process, that of recording exposure records and explaining the process around health records. This required the specification of parameters for personal monitoring (ACM, Activity, Fixing) to facilitate the recording of accurate exposure records, hence the decision to broaden the scope of this guidance. PM has been a common topic during licence renewals and this guidance is designed to answer these queries and includes PM strategy guidance with a view to providing an industry standardised approach that will be accessible to all licence holders. Waste skip suitability has been created following concern raised via licence renewals. This centres on skips known as Rear End Loaders (RELs). •
It is unclear how waste can be safely placed into this design.
•
•
If waste is only placed at both ends it is likely that movement will occur during transport with loss of primary containment. The height of the openings introduces manual handling risks.
From these concerns we have developed a set of criteria that skips should meet to ensure only those adequate for licensed asbestos waste disposal are used by the licensed industry. These are all expected to be finalised and published over the summer. Find out the latest on these and everything else going on during the ACAD regionals in late June. Members can attend any of these they wish. To register for any or all of the events, email: training@acad.uk.com.

ACAD’s membership continues to grow ACAD’s consistent membership growth over recent years has been accelerating through the unprecedentedly turbulent past year we’ve all experienced. Just before lockdown ACAD was pleased to welcome new members to the association including MSS Environmental headquartered in Cardiff (image left) and MCA Lab headquartered in Santiago, Chile. With a steady stream of new applications coming in to ACAD during last summer’s lockdown, we have been able to vet and welcome new members from all around the UK including SCK Group, Gwella Contracting Services, MCP and Asbestos Essentials. Graham Warren, ACAD Manager said: “ACAD had to step up and quickly adapt how we supported our members during lockdown through the remote delivery of Licensed Asbestos training courses, remote site auditing, NVQ assessment via Smart Assessor and ACAD regional webinars. We have been at the forefront of the provision of information during this time thanks to our ongoing membership of Build UK, where ACAD alone represents the UK asbestos industry. I think this unique position allows ACAD to provide an unrivalled level of support, which has been reflected in this latest surge in applications to join the association.” Other organisations to join ACAD in recent times include
Hughes & Salvidge, DemCom, Rhodes Asbestos Services, Keltbray Environmental Services and many more. Dan Frost, Managing Director of Keltbray Environmental Solutions said: “Keltbray values and supports ACAD’s role in driving continuous improvement within the asbestos industry. We are very much looking forward to working with ACAD to ensure asbestos compliance across our industry is understood, prioritised and adhered to in line with industry regulations. We are excited by the prospect of collaborating with ACAD to train and develop our asbestos technicians to help raise the levels of professionalism across the industry.” Thanking ACAD’s latest members, Graham Warren said: “It’s great to see so many organisations full of great people joining ACAD. I hold so many conversations with people looking to join who have been hearing all the positive talk surrounding ACAD over recent years be it our representation, technical advice or simply our great training. ACAD will continue to work tirelessly to raise standards and support our growing membership across the asbestos industry into the future.” If you aren’t a member and want to find out why more and more companies like yours are joining ACAD, get in touch by emailing: gwarren@acad.uk.com.
Two new and longerterm members speak about their membership of ACAD Gowrie Contracts Gowrie Contracts has been a member of ACAD for almost a decade now, can you recall why you first chose ACAD as your asbestos trade association? At the time we were using a really good local training provider and felt that ACAD’s flexible approach fitted perfectly with our operating model. In addition, the technical knowledge that ACAD is renowned for was a great attraction. How has the past decade of ACAD membership helped Gowrie Contracts? Oh, it’s been extremely beneficial. The regionals are a highlight – full
of all the information we need, but really enjoyable too. The introduction of the Specialist Apprenticeship Programme has been a revelation too, allowing us to benefit from our CITB levy registration and push our team to new heights of professionalism. It was a proud moment when one of our apprentices was crowned Apprentice of the Year. On a day-to-day basis the ACAD suite of apps are boosting our productivity on site and it’s really easy to contact Graham and his team with any technical queries around the unusual situations we encounter.
And finally, would you recommend ACAD to other organisations? I would, I do, and I have. There’s no doubt in my mind we made the right decision all those years ago. ACAD membership has been extremely good value for money given all the advice and support they’ve provided over the years.
Rebecca Davies, Technical Manager for MSS Group, tells us how MSS has found its first year of ACAD membership. Why did MSS Group want to join ACAD? We felt the progressive nature of ACAD was much more in line with our own approach to business, and the open dialogue and positivity during the ACAD regional meeting we attended was really impressive. It was certainly a refreshing change. What has your first year of ACAD membership brought to your organisation? ACAD’s holistic approach and
support has been really beneficial. The training we’ve had has been far superior to anything else we’ve had to date across all levels, operatives, supervisors, managers and the recent director’s course. Everybody has found it enjoyable and we feel this has helped enhance the culture within MSS Group. In addition, the technical support has been invaluable. We’ve had to deal with some particularly challenging scenarios and the advice we’ve been given
has enabled us to move forwards. I’ve become a real advocate for ACAD and their open, approachable and friendly style. And finally, what would you say to other organisations thinking about following your example and choosing ACAD? I would whole heartedly recommend they join.
Fighting the good fight How did your company start how has it developed since then? The company was originally incorporated in 2012 by Raf and his business partner Darek. Both of them went through the trainings to get asbestos qualifications, Darek was the one who sponsored Asbestos Fighters from the beginning, but he was more interested in his plumbing and gas safe business. Raf decided to get his practical knowledge by working on site as an operative for couple of years, working through asbestos agencies for many different contractors, learning the trade throughout and developing his skills. After couple of years, Raf wanted 10 | AsbestosHUB Magazine
to go further and he started offering his services to couple external labour-providing companies with himself as supervisor/asbestos manager. At this point Asbestos Fighters was secondary to Raf’s other business. In 2015 Raf paid off his business partner Darek and started his venture as a one-man band with good asbestos knowledge and a wealth of knowledge and experience in the construction industry. Asbestos Fighters was still secondary until 2018, but this was the year when all magic happened. Raf had a very good reputation within companies he worked with and the quality of his workmanship was very solid.
When did you acquire your asbestos certifications? We started preparing for our licence once Gosia, our Managing Director, joined the company in 2019. We used most of the last year of lockdowns to prepare all the paperwork, documents and procedures before applying for the licence and we received it in September 2020. Before we had our licence, we were licensed subcontractors. What kind of projects do you work on most frequently? We do all sort of jobs from small, one-day residential jobs to large commercial projects. Our bread and butter is residential, non-licensed theasbestoshub.com

removals, carried out by a designated team – e.g sheds, garage roofs, floor tiles, flu pipes and water tanks. The most common licensed jobs for us are asbestos insulation board removal, usually from garages. Another common work we do is asbestos pipe lagging removal from domestic and commercial properties. At the moment we have a large removal project running in Chertsey. Tell us about a standout project Asbestos cement roof sheet removal at Butlin’s Bognor Regis Resort for a leading demolition company. We spent approximately eight months on this project, working on standby to provide services immediately in case of need and doing everything we could to help our clients meet their deadline. This demolition company has its own asbestos team and even so, they have used us on different sites as a backup team to help them with their deadlines. Challenges on this project: • from dealing with bats to underground rivers • being on standby – always being ready for action Our achievements: • job completed safely, on time and on budget How has the scope of your business developed over time? Are you in the process of developing your range of services? During the last year, we worked really hard to put procedures together for the licence. These have improved our company’s management systems and operations and the licence has opened a lot of doors for us to potential new clients and work. Since getting the licence, we have grown incredibly. We have moved to bigger offices, from three people running the business we now have 11, more than five vehicles on the fleet, and this all has been achieved in around seven to eight months. 12 | AsbestosHUB Magazine
What makes your company different? Of our quotes, 90 per cent are based on site visits rather than electronic versions of asbestos surveys. We do not raise our price for night shifts or weekend work. How do you gain business and spread the word about your services? Most of our work comes from word of mouth. We are also quite active on social media such as LinkedIn and Facebook. We definitely want Asbestos Fighters to be more recognisable and have other marketing strategies up our sleeve that I cannot comment on at the moment. Raf is a member of few business networking groups, like BNI, London Grafters and PBLink. We are also quite recognised in the Polish community and we also advertise on Polish Radio. What Continuous Professional Development do you undertake? We regularly appraise our team to see what other training they might require. We like to invest in the team to bring the best out of them. We also constantly look for ways to improve and digitalise our internal procedures and management systems. Do you have any notable projects in progress or in planning? We are constantly working on quotations and tenders. Once we get the renewal of our licence, it should be for another three years and we are hoping this will open a lot more opportunities. How do you envisage your company in five to 10 years? Looking at how much we have grown in just under a year, the sky’s the limit. We have a lot of other ideas alongside asbestos removal that we will be working on, including expanding our services to more areas. So watch this space.
And finally What’s your tipple of choice? Wine and prosecco for the girls and whiskey for the boys. Favourite cuisine? We like all cuisines. What’s your bucket list activity? Traveling more, definitely. Depending, of course, on whether we are allowed to.

With a wealth of experience, Jess and Rianne Scott decided to go it alone and start their own asbestos business. They wanted to build a business like no other in the industry and would do everything in their power to make it happen. But nothing phased them. They had a goal, and they weren’t going to stop until they got there. Imperial growth: Mark Stanley speaks to Asbestos Hub about the Empire Asbestos story How did your company start how has it developed since then? Empire has been trading since 1993, starting as predominantly an adhesive tape manufacture and converter. However, throughout my career I have always held a large client base within the asbestos and insulation industry. Over time we have expanded our range of products to include a full range of asbestos consumables and maintenance essentials, as well as a full range of plant equipment we offer on a sale or hire basis. Based on our expansion we now have five branches nationwide with more opening soon.
How and why did you acquire your asbestos certifications? We have held an Ancillary Asbestos Licence for several years to offer testing and serving in the industry, as we are not an asbestos removal company. We pride ourselves on offering our clients the full package, ensuring their sites are set up with everything they need from consumables, to plant equipment, to fully tested and serviced PPE. How has the scope of the business developed over time? Where one door closes another opens. At Empire we are always improving and moving with the
times. With regards to developing, we ensure our products are sourced from the best manufacturers, our plant is built to the highest specification and we are always looking for ways to improve based on client feedback and the changing world we live in. What makes your company different? At Empire our main ethos is service. Our clients are very well looked after as we offer the highest level of quality and customer service. The majority of our staff are long term members of the company which I believe says a lot about Empire and the type of company we are. No job is too big or too small at Empire and we offer the same service throughout. How do you gain business and spread the word about your services? Marketing is key in my opinion and I believe our marketing is one of the best in the industry. We promote our products and ranges on all social media and marketing platforms to ensure our clients don’t miss out on any offers, news, product launches, etc. Our team works closely with our purchasing and sales team to ensure all bases are covered and Empire is the name on everyone’s lips.

Do you undertake any Continuous Professional Development? Yes, this is vital. All our engineers are trained to the highest levels, including Gas Safe and Fit2Fit. We offer external and in house training for all aspects and ensure our engineers are always learning, improving and keeping up with the current standards we need to meet to ensure our clients have the best possible service from Empire. What are the biggest technological developments you have seen in the industry and what do you envisage will be the future game changers? For me, I think plant equipment has come on leaps and bounds over the last 10 years. NPUs, Vacs and other plant have all developed and become more advanced. At Empire we have always tried to be ahead of the game and always worked with the best to ensure our equipment is superior to others’. Working with companies such as Enviro-Vac to help develop our NPUs and Vacs has given us great insight and knowledge into the right specifications and enabled us to deliver some outstanding pieces of plant. At the moment we are working in association with Trust Trailers to develop and build Decontamination Units and Welfare Systems to rival anything out there in the market today and improve site facilities for our clients. How do you see the future of the asbestos processing industry as the amount in circulation reduces over time? As previously mentioned ‘as one door closes another opens’ and as we will see a reduction over time, I believe we will also see an increase in other work. For example the risk of exposure to silica dust. I believe the world changes and we will only succeed and grow if we change with it.
theasbestoshub.com
How do you envisage your company in five to 10 years? We recently appointed a new Managing Director, Jaime Cowing. Empire, as previously mentioned, has a line of long term staff members, Jaime being one of our key employees. She has nearly 20 years’ experience not just at Empire but also in the asbestos industry. Coming from an operations background, Jaime has the knowledge and means to ensure Empire continues to grow and expand in the future. She has a fantastic team with her so retirement for me will be something I can eventually look forward to knowing Empire is in good hands.
And finally: What’s your tipple of choice? Whiskey Favourite food? Fruits de mer What’s your bucket list activity? Travelling the world

Asbestos workers: heroes of our time Mesothelioma survivor Mavis Nye; founder and President of the European Asbestos Forum Dr Yvonne Waterman; and construction sector business consultant Terry Irving offer their perspectives on asbestos today related illnesses are not on the decline, however. Asbestos is a much bigger issue than society realises and has serious detrimental effects on the population, economy and the environment. Much more effort should be put into raising awareness and denaturation of asbestos.
Taking action on mesothelioma, by Mavis Nye Mesothelioma is not an old man’s disease anymore. We lost a lovely young lady, wife, and mother of two very young children very recently. We have several young people, even 19-year-olds, and many in their 20s and 30s. It is showing in young people from contamination in schools. For every teacher that is dying there is a class of children who have been contaminated; we have tradesmen working where asbestos is present in the home and workplace; there are children affected by their parents’ DIY. Just because asbestos has been banned in some countries it doesn’t mean it isn’t present in all our lives. 20 | AsbestosHUB Magazine
There are many more asbestos victims than statistics reflect and medical science is discovering evidence for ‘new’ asbestos related diseases all the time – consider laryngeal cancer, ovarian cancer, with serious suspicions regarding throat and stomach cancer. Such data should be reflected in government policy. Some believe that asbestosrelated deaths are plateauing. The fact is that we are surviving now. We no longer just rely on chemotherapy, because there are alternative medications and far more surgical procedures. This does not change the fact that asbestos
ActionMeso Our ongoing mission and campaign, ActionMeso (actionmeso.org) is the first instance of so many patient support groups and charities joining forces to raise awareness of mesothelioma. We have two clear goals: awareness and eradication. We want to make every person in the UK aware of mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos. This has grown into a great campaign with the help of MPs, anyone involved in asbestos and training, lawyers, nurses, doctors and of course, patients and carers. Raising money for mesothelioma research The Mavis Nye Charity is raising money for research and for a Mesothelioma UK nurse in Canterbury. usually last on the available budget. People tend to think of asbestos removal in the abstract: one pays a lot of money, a lot of old rubbish and dust gets removed and one doesn’t really have anything to show for it but empty space. Rarely is appreciation expressed for the hard work and investment that has gone into eradicating a building of asbestos, providing a clean and healthy environment.
Legal advice from Dr Yvonne Waterman, President of the European Asbestos Forum In my everyday life, I am the director of Waterman Legal Consultancy, which specialises in all things asbestos from a (mostly) legal or innovative perspective, both Dutch and international. But most of you will know me as the founder and president of the European Asbestos Forum (EAF) foundation, speaking at conferences from Los Angeles to Yokohama, trying to raise awareness on asbestos and the urgent need to share knowledge to prevent new victims. “Sharing makes us stronger” and “Across borders and sectors” are the EAF mottos. In the nonCOVID-19 world, I also organise the international EAF conference once a year, bringing asbestos specialists from every possible background and across the globe together. Here’s some good news: the EAF 2022 is being planned already and it will be marvellous. Asbestos workers are hardworking heroes and they should be recognised as such; they work in the firing line when it comes to the carcinogenic asbestos. That takes guts. Asbestos removal doesn’t have anything smart or fancy about it. Indeed, it tends to be dirty work in unpleasant, narrow or high places 22 | AsbestosHUB Magazine
or out in the cold, often working on ladders or roofs in airtight overalls and wearing surprisingly heavy face masks that make breathing hard work. And that’s not even counting the physical work, lugging asbestos roofing, pipes and whatnot about. Asbestos removal workers make homes, buildings and the environment safer for us all; they increase the value of property; they face the dangers we don’t want to face. If that isn’t worthy of respect, then what is? Cutting corners never works out Often, I am involved in complaints regarding the costs of asbestos removal, particularly when these are higher than estimated. Some contractors will try to undercut each other to impossible margins to win the job. That never works out well in the end. If you only ask half the money, you’ll only be doing half the work. Clients will usually go for the cheapest quotation, “no questions asked”. This is partially because the public doesn’t value professional asbestos removal work enough. Some awareness would go a long way. When a building needs work done to it, asbestos removal is
Never go for the cheapest quotation A quote may look expensive at first glance, but a proper job means a safe job for all concerned. It also means no interference from the local authorities; no criminal, administrative or contractual court cases and fines; no bad press; no delays and the like. All these costs eventually wind up in the cheapskate quote or are carried by the community. When I am asked to advise on quotations, I point out that you get what you pay for. When you choose the cheapest quotation, you’ll get mired in all sorts of troubles. I also advise asbestos removal companies, so they will not be liable for risks and costs they haven’t considered in their haste to get the first bid out. Future Asbestos Hub columns In future columns, we will write about the need for young workers to recognise asbestos, the true meaning of an asbestos ban, eradication, innovation in the asbestos sector, medical progress and other topics. And we’ll focus on a topic dear to the European Asbestos Forum’s heart, denaturation of asbestos. This is emphatically not recycling, but destruction of asbestos within a circular economy. Denaturation is, I believe, where the future of asbestos lies. Terry Irving, representative for asbestos removal clients and campaigner for safer working, writes about regulation in the asbestos industry
Asbestos was a widely used material within commercial buildings, homes, and machinery until 1999, when it was banned in the UK. This means that asbestos is common in the environment. However, working directly with asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can give personal exposures to airborne asbestos that are much higher than normal environmental levels. Repeated occupational exposures can give rise to a substantial cumulative exposure over time. This will increase the risk of developing an asbestos-related disease in the future. I have spent the last 15 years or so campaigning trying to make the industry safer and more regulated for the asbestos removal community. The industry has been given a bad name in the past. Why? A lot of the clients that I have dealt with over the years do not understand the costs of asbestos removal carried out correctly, which can run into the millions on large industrial projects. theasbestoshub.com
It has become increasingly difficult for asbestos removal contractors to obtain or retain asbestos licences within the systems and methods they must adhere to – asbestos removal projects are costly in terms of wages, equipment, training, licensing and many other aspects. It is our job to make sure clients understand the costs. Asbestos is classified as a category one carcinogen, with asbestos related disease causing around 5,000 deaths every year in the UK. Work with asbestos requires a high degree of regulatory control and the purpose of licensing is to achieve this. Ten years ago, there were some 600 asbestos removal contractors in the UK, as against around 400 today. Working for asbestos supply companies, I was able to listen to the asbestos contractors and help adapt hire equipment and PPE to higher standards and do my bit to help keep the heroes safer in the workplace. At one point, the industry
was being bombarded with cheap, substandard PPE from countries that still use asbestos in construction. The equipment and plant being supplied in the industry today is far more advanced in health and safety than ever before, which is testament to asbestos removal contractors and asbestos supply companies, and assisted by both ARCA (Asbestos Removal Contractors Association) and ACAD (Asbestos Control and Abatement Division). Even though health concerns have prompted more than 50 countries to restrict or ban the use of asbestos since the early 1970s, others continue to mine and consume the toxic mineral in alarming quantities. Supported for decades by aggressive industry campaigns, the popularity of asbestos is currently rising in developing nations, where affordable, mass-produced building materials are in high demand. But the affordability of asbestos does not come without costs – namely in human lives. Although supporters contest the toxicity of chrysotile (white) asbestos when used under controlled conditions, countless studies have linked exposure of any type or dose to an increased risk of asbestos related diseases, including mesothelioma. The world has many things to deal with and we should not add to the health issues through increasing deaths caused by exposure to asbestos. A vaccine for COVID-19 was produced in less than a year, but we have known for decades that banning the use of asbestos worldwide would, over time, see a decrease in horrible, painful cancers relating to exposure to asbestos. www.terryirvingbusiness generation.co.uk AsbestosHUB Magazine | 23
Primed to serve Prime Safety Services Limited is one of the longest serving licensed UKATA training providers in the UK, with former Prime Safety staff sitting on the board of the organisation. Now under the ownership of Adam Tynan and Steve Peacock, the company continues to grow and gain an excellent reputation for quality and customer service, with its portfolio of retained and nonretained clients growing on a weekly basis. The company also now offers a range of asbestos related services including training, consultancy and NVQs in the removal of hazardous waste. As the only UKATA Licensed Removal provider in Kent, Prime Safety assists many of the local licensed contractors with their training requirements, from operative right through to directors.

Its facility is well equipped for practical training, giving site staff and their management teams real life scenarios to aid their learning. As well as courses in licensed asbestos removal, Prime Safety provides basic awareness and non-licensed removal training to contractors, local authorities, educational establishments, demolition companies and more. Prime Safety provides retained consultancy services for a number of licensed removal contractors and support in terms of licence applications and renewals. Director, Steve Peacock was one of the first contractors (for DDS Environmental) in late 2018 to go through the new online process, being assessed by highly regarded industry professional, Archie Mitchell. Prime’s staff are not only
experienced in the removal of asbestos but have many years of experience in asbestos surveys and management, holding qualifications such as BOHS P402, P405, P406 and RSPH Level 4, to name a few. The company prides itself on the skill and expertise of its staff. All trainers registered to teach in licensed asbestos removal have worked in the field for many years, with two being former licence holders. This real life, hands on experience is intrinsic to Prime’s course delivery and its trainers’ experience enables the course content to be tailored to individual clients’ needs. Having recently completed its annual independent UKATA audit, Prime has reason to take pride in the comments from the auditor: ‘’Prime are going above and beyond the requirements of the standard training syllabus to ensure the learners get the most from each course.’’ To accommodate the growing demand for CSCS cards on the majority of work sites, Prime established its NVQ division, Prime

Qualification Services Limited. Prime Qualifications is a ProQual registered centre, delivering a wide range of construction related NVQs including (but not limited to) Level 2 in hazardous waste (Licensed Asbestos) and Level 3 supervising licensed asbestos removal (construction). These qualifications enable the learner to obtain their blue skilled worker or gold supervisor cards. Prime Qualification will soon be adding the Scottish Qualification Authority Level 4 for licensed asbestos contract managers (the equivalent of a level 6 in England) to its list of NVQs, enabling delegates to obtain their black CSCS manager card. Like all industries, asbestos training has undoubtedly been hit hard by the pandemic. According to a UKATA report in September 2020, asbestos training was at its lowest level for five years, with an average of 6,000 workers a month undertaking UKATA asbestos training between March and August 2020, a 66 per cent reduction compared to the previous six months. This reduction in training numbers has raised concerns over an increased risk of exposure, which when coupled with the latency period of asbestos could cause a greater amount of asbestos related fatalities in the future. Asbestos remains the largest single industrial killer ever seen in the UK and refresher training remains key in helping to mitigate these risks. Prime Safety has worked hard to adapt and continue to support its clients during this time, providing online and classroom training options to help ensure they remain compliant. The company has kept its clients informed of HSE regulatory updates in response to the pandemic and measures that should be put in place as and when employees return to the workplace. Prime Safety is proud to offer a diverse range of services to its asbestos clients and under the leadership of Adam and Steve, will continue to expand its portfolio in line with industry changes.

Tony Windsor of Windsor Waste Management
How did you get into the asbestos disposal / waste management industry? The business of waste is very much in my DNA. I started painting skips and sweeping the yard of the family business from the age of 13 and as they say, the rest is history. By the age of 18 I was running my own yard and by 21 I had passed my HGV licence. Believe it not, I was working on asbestos landfill sites at the age of 16 (all compliantly of course) but the waste management industry was a different kettle of fish back then. 26 | AsbestosHUB Magazine
How did Windsor start and how has it developed since then? As the industry began to move from simply shifting rubbish to a more professional approach, I spotted a gap in the asbestos disposal market for a different approach that raised the standards of asbestos waste management. So, I decided to move away from the family business to start my own venture. I did not want the debt that would come with investing in the capital, so I took a risk and sold my home, which allowed me enough money to purchase one vehicle and a small number of containers. I got my first customer by getting them out of a hole the first day I went to see them. I went back to the yard, (space loaned by friend and colleague from the waste industry), got my overalls on and did the job that day.
What kind of projects do you work on most frequently? We cover the full range of demolition and construction wastes and specialise in the management of hazardous waste. We deal with a lot of asbestos waste for the Licensed Asbestos Removal Contractors industry, as well as the demolition and roofing industries. We also specialise in the management of contaminated soils and Problematic Waste Streams, which are waste streams with no clear route of disposal, and which require a specific process to gain acceptance for treatment. We can manage the whole process from carrying out a full spectrum of analysis and WAC to providing the transport and finding an appropriate disposal / treatment route. What are your highlights from your company’s history? We recently celebrated our 20-year anniversary and the highlight for me is still being involved and passionate about the business after so long, as well as being recognised within the industry as one of the operators with values. This is reflected in our theasbestoshub.com

customers’ industries and like many, you have the good and the bad and how you conduct yourself as a business is critical to your success and longevity. The nature of the business of asbestos disposal means that we regularly work at high profile site and locations, including Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, numerous embassies, nuclear powers stations and airside locations, to name a few. You could say it is water off a duck’s back and we are very well versed with the dealing with the demands of working at such high-profile sites and the security measures it brings. How has the scope of your business developed over time and are you in the process of developing your range of services? The industry has come a long way since I started WWM over 20 years ago. It has become more focused on legislation and compliance and we have led the way in this area. As a business we have expanded from starting out as one business to developing the Windsor Integrated Services Group (WISG), which consists of three specialist resource management companies. More specifically relating to our work with asbestos, in 2014 through newly founded company ARI Global Technologies, WISG purchased the global rights to a unique thermochemical conversion technology (TCCT), that destroys asbestos fibres and produces a non-hazardous product. Since then, we have been working extensively to deploy the technology across the globe, with our most recent success in Australia, securing an A$8.8 million grant from the Australian government to progress the project development of a 100-tonne-perday trial facility. What makes your company different? From day one of doing our first job at the London Museum, service and commitment has been our key driver and ethos. Investment 28 | AsbestosHUB Magazine
has also played a big part in our growth. When the ban on the codisposal of hazardous and nonhazardous waste came into effect, landfill facilities were drastically reduced, but we were one of the first businesses to invest in trailers, enabling us to take multiple skips at a time. We have always been at the forefront of raising standards and have continuously invested in maintaining the highest credentials over the years. What are the biggest technological developments you have seen in the industry and what do you think will be the future game changers? When it comes to the treatment of asbestos waste, we are still in the position where the only route for disposal is landfill, and that has got to change. There are a number of factors that should be driving that change, including diminishing landfill capacity, environmental factors such as climate change and new available technology. ARI Global Technologies, TCCT technology provides an alternative, sustainable and commercially viable solution for managing asbestos waste. How do you see the future of the asbestos processing industry? Our focus is on how we can move away from landfilling asbestos and managing asbestos waste more sustainably. It is estimated that there are still around six million tonnes of asbestos in 1.5 million UK buildings and by placing asbestos in landfill, we are not removing it from the environment, we are simply storing it as an unwanted legacy for the next generation to deal with. One of the key goals is to continue to develop ARI and make this technology a working reality in the UK, which sees us as a nation move away from simply storing asbestos in the ground to eradicating asbestos altogether.
all the time and have some exciting developments underway with ARI. I think there are some interesting opportunities to come, such as dealing with radioactive asbestos waste and for some blue-sky thinking, the potential mining and reclamation of some of the wastes we have been burying for many years. How do you envisage your company in five to 10 years? We will continue with our drive to improve standards and demonstrate best practice. We are making strides with our plans for ARI Global Technologies, progressing towards building a plant overseas, which will be a blueprint for a plant in the UK. If we can make this technology a reality in the UK and move away from simply storing asbestos in landfill within the next two, five or 10 years, that will be huge progress.
And finally What’s your tipple of choice? Beer, whisky, red wine, white wine, ouzo, limoncello, sambuca and Cointreau, but not all at the same time. Favourite cuisine/foods? Any meat or fish, washed down with some of the above What’s your bucket list activity? Mardi Gras and Rio Carnival.
Do you have any notable projects in progress or in planning? As I have alluded to, we are dealing with notable projects and locations theasbestoshub.com

Thermac: The name the trade trusts Thermac Hire Managing Director, Seán Doyle talks to Asbestos Hub magazine about what the asbestos industry means to him and the effects the last year has had on the asbestos industry Can you give our readers some background on Thermac Hire? Thermac Hire is the industry leader in the hire, sale and servicing sectors of specialist equipment used within hazardous environments. We have been leading the way for nearly 30 years and pride ourselves on quality, trust and innovation. We supply safety equipment and consumables, not only to the asbestos industry but to construction, demolition, marine, janitorial and such like. We are not just a specialist equipment manufacturer and provider though; we are also a specialist training provider, face fit mask testing division, we have an extensive in-house servicing department and generally try to provide our clients with a full solution when it comes to any hazardous project they need to undertake. How has the last year been for the industry? A lot of our clients have been very loyal to us and we have built lasting partnerships throughout the years. Business was healthy pre-COVID and it was an exciting time within our
32 | AsbestosHUB Magazine
industry for innovation and development, with many large and prestigious projects on the books allowing us to showcase our specialities. Then we hit the worldwide challenge that is COVID-19. Never in our lifetime have we experienced a pandemic with such ferocity that it literally stopped everything in its tracks. Was the industry prepared? Of course not. Our industry and other sectors were not prepared. How could we have known? Nobody did. We were all unaware of the challenges that we were going to face and that crystal ball wasn’t available. If only. The asbestos industry was hit with a huge shortage of raw materials, especially from Asia, and the limited availability was a real challenge to the sector. Balance that against the rise in cost of materials from suppliers and there was a real
dilemma in trying to remain compliant versus being able to run a business successfully. How did the virus affect the industry directly? COVID brought an additional challenge to an industry that was already highly regulated with regard to health and safety. Now we had to factor in social distancing. Site welfare had to increase, segregation was needed, more sanitising was demanded, PPE became slowly obsolete and so on. Price increases for equipment and materials have targeted profits, requiring procurement teams to try to get the greatest value while still providing the best standards, ensuring safety protocols are in place, and still try to make a profit.
theasbestoshub.com
Has procurement proved difficult and how can this be tackled? The importance of the supply chain has certainly been overlooked – purchasing materials to keep your projects going, supplying your staff with the best equipment, keeping your customers happy and delivering the highest standards so they keep coming back for more. Set that against rising price structures and the need to invest in equipment adds to the bubbling pot of keeping a business going, let alone being profitable. We are now starting to see a price war between contractors and suppliers. Raw materials are comparatively expensive and having to pass that on to the contractor can lead them to consider purchasing inferior products or severing long standing relationships due to price. It becomes a really tough decision when your business needs to turn over but you also need the reliability and service you are used to. Do you buy inferior products and potentially drop standards in an industry that is working with carcinogens in order to make a living. Or do you do the right thing and protect your staff and the environment they work in? How can we make this better going forward? As an industry, we need to trust each other and work with suppliers, who do not want to supply substandard products and risk safety and quality. We have built relationships with contractors that took years and now more than ever we need to be honest with each other and navigate through this together until things return to normal. There is leverage in terms of tax breaks such as the 130 per cent tax relief on equipment, but this is only a short-term solution to a long term problem. The future holds a steadying out of prices and a return to the “new normal” and for me, we need to be brave now and hold our nerve together, we won’t allow standards to slip and we will not introduce inferior products to the marketplace. This would only place theasbestoshub.com
risk on the industry. We cannot put profit ahead of health and safety and the right way to do things in this industry. Now more than ever we need to look at supply chains and maintain those relationships that we have worked tirelessly to establish, work together and be honest and transparent for the greater good of the industry. We are in an industry that cannot compromise on price or material standards, we must invest now and build for the future. If the industry wants to have quality products, this will come with a cost. Our industry is heavily licensed for a reason and that reason is not profit, it is working safely. What does the future hold for Thermac Hire? We are in a great position; we have invested a lot into research and development, tackling long term issues with industry equipment designs and coming up with innovative solutions for a secure, lasting future. We’re constantly tackling the need for environmentally friendly solutions, we are heavily investing in new greener fleet, we’ve also just launched the UK’s first fully electric self-contained decontamination welfare units running purely on sustainable energy. Our website www. thermac.com has also been redeveloped to allow
customers to buy equipment and materials online, making it easier for them to source supplies easily and efficiently with direct site deliveries etc. We have also expanded. We opened a new depot in Milton Keynes, allowing us to serve customers in the south of the UK more easily. We are continually building our client base thanks to recommendations from within the industry and we have also noticed a considerable increase from customers in industries we’d normally not interact with due to our reputation as the industry innovators and leaders.
