Mayor Malik D. Evans Announces “Rochester Peace Collective” In his administration’s latest action to confront violence, Mayor Malik D. Evans today announced the creation of the “Rochester Peace Collective” and an additional $5 million in funding for violence prevention.

Under the guidance of the Special Advisor to the Mayor on Violence Prevention Programs Victor Saunders, the Rochester Mayor Evans Peace Collective is a collaborative effort that will guide investments from local funding organizations into innovative and proven programs that work to prevent violence. The Collective will align closely with City departments including the Mayor’s Office, the Department of Recreation and Human Services, and the Rochester Public Library.

The City plans to commit $5 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to the effort. That commitment will be considered and voted on by Rochester City Council in its May meeting.

“The alarming rise in violence here and across the country demands bold and immediate action,” said Mayor Evans. “We must innovate while increasing our support of proven programs.

The City isn’t in this alone, so we invite community partners to sit with us and support local violence prevention efforts through this Collective.”

Local funders are already engaged, and other foundations, organizations and individuals who would like to help support violence prevention programs are encouraged to contact the Mayor’s Office to learn more about becoming involved with the collaborative.

The City is seeking proven and innovative violence prevention programs to join the Collective by calling 585-428-7406 or emailing RochesterPeaceCollective@CityOfRochester.gov, and to apply for financial support once the funds become available.

ABC Hires Mubarak Bashir as VP of Youth & Community Services As of Tuesday, May 3, 2022, Mubarak Bashir joined ABC as their new Vice President of Youth & Community Services. He succeeds Naimah Sierra who retired late in 2021 after 22 years of service to ABC and the Rochester community.

He has extensive experience in nonprofit management. His career has been dedicated to improving the community and helping individuals move towards self- sufficiency. Prior to joining Greyston in 2020 as Regional Director of its Rochester Center for Open Hiring, he worked at the Urban League of Rochester for over I I years in a variety of roles.

Mubarak holds an MPA from the College at Brockport of the State University of New York, where he was inducted into the Pi Alpha Alpha Honors Society, and a Bachelor's in Sociology/ Criminology from Millersville University in Pennsylvania.

n a cold winter day this past January, family, friends and loved ones gathered for a vigil and balloon launch in memory of Tiara Lott. They were still holding on to hope that the person responsible for her death would be found and held accountable.

Tiara, 22, had gone missing in January of 2021. Her body was found weeks later near Wex Avenue along the train tracks.

This week their prayers were answered when her ex-boyfriend, 28-year-old Andre “Dro” Whigham turned himself in almost a year and a half after the crime.

He has been charged with one count of second-degree murder in the strangulation death of Tiara. If convicted of the charge, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. He's being held without bail. A return court date had not been established at press time.

Local law enforcement and Crime Stopper as well as US Tiara Lott Marshals were involved in trying to locate Whigham.

But it was the efforts of her family and community that kept the issue in the forefront and made sure that their loved one was not forgotten as they pressed for justice.

Central to the community effort was the involvement of Pastor Timothy Newkirk of GYC Ministries from organizing searches to vigils.

“We never lost hope or faith,” Pastor NewKirk told Fox Buffalo. “We were in touch with law enforcement, so it was just a matter of time.”

He said that although the arrest of Whigham won’t bring Tiara back, he was in hopes that it would at least bring some closure to the family.

Update: The Grant Case - How Long Will The Legal Travesty Go On? As the saying goes, ”it ain’t over till it’s over.”

But the question remains. How long will the legal travesty involving community activist Betty Jean Grant continue?

On Tuesday, May 3, what her legal team thought would be the end after six months of back and forth court appearances - was not.

That’s because the DA’s office insisted that Mrs. Grant take either a plea of guilty to a violation of trespassing or disorderly conduct.

“Our position was that she didn’t do anything wrong, and clearly nothing intentionally out of order,” said her attor"Team Grant" pictured after Tuesday's hearing in ney James McLeod “In an effort to reCity Court. solve this matter we suggested granting of an ACD (but did not get it) to resolve this case and dismiss it in the interest of justice.”

An ACD (which stands for Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal ) basically means as long as the person involved does not get engage in any criminal activity for six months (they are sometimes required to do community service) - the case is dismissed .

Mrs. Grant, a former educator, County legislator, teacher, Council Member and Board of Elections worker, would have no problem meeting the criteria pointed out Attorney McLeod.

The final outcome of Tuesdays proceedings noted McLeod, was that Judge Andrew C. LoTempio would have to do a little more research before rendering an oral Continued Page 15

Queen Mother Moore Audley “Queen Mother” Moore, prominent Harlem civil rights activist, was born on July 27 1898, in New Iberia, Louisiana. She educated herself by reading the writings of Frederick Douglass and listening to the speeches of Marcus Garvey.

Moved by the Black Nationalist message in a speech Marcus Garvey gave in New Orleans, Moore migrated to Harlem, New York in 1922 during the early years of the Harlem Renaissance.

While in Harlem, she became a member and then a leader within Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). A proud shareholder in the Black Star Line, she helped organize UNIA conventions in New York. Moore married Frank Warner in 1922. They had one son, Thomas.

After the demise of the UNIA, Moore founded several organizations.

With her base in Harlem, Moore founded and served as president of the Universal Association of Ethiopian Women in 1950. In 1963, she founded the Committee for Reparations for Descendants of U.S.

“You don’t need a mask mandate to wear a mask,” said Rachel Wilkerson Miller, a senior editor at Vox. Despite a Florida judges’ recent ruling that struck down a federal mandate the CDC still recommends masks for passengers on planes and other shared transport modes.

Covid infection rates are climbing again and the science hasn’t changed. MASKS WORK - protecting both yourself and others.

Even when people near you are unmasked, a tight-fitting N95 or KN95 definitely reduces the chances of contracting the virus. It's true that the ventilation systems on planes are effective filters, but they often don’t run when the plane is sitting at the gate, and trains and buses have “terrible” ventilation.

“At minimum, you should wear a mask when you’re taking transit to the airport, in the airport, boarding the plane, taxing to the runway and disembarking the plane.” (The airport, versus the plane itself, is the main source of concern: You will be walking through clouds of SARS-CoV-2 during a high transmission time.)

Houghton College Appoints Dr. Natasha Davis Special Assistant to the President

oughton College announced the appointment of Dr. Natasha Davis as the Special Assistant to the President for Strategic Planning and Compliance.

“I have known and worked with Dr. Davis for many years,” said Houghton President, Wayne D. Lewis, Jr. “She is a skilled, hardworking, and passionate leader-scholar. I was excited about her interest in and candidacy for this position, and I am thrilled that a leader of her background, character, and Christian commitment will be joining Houghton’s Executive Leadership Cabinet.”

As an administrator with a background rooted in the arts, Davis brings a unique approach to administration and academic leadership. Using her creative skills, Davis seeks to find new, creative ways to improve upon various aspects of faculty engagement and development, collaborative and engaging scholDr. Natasha Davis arship, and academic practices to best equip students, staff and faculty. She currently serves as Assistant Dean for the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Morehead State University in Kentucky.

ith their recent move into a bigger facility at 3199 Delaware Ave in Kenmore, NY, Studio J - now in it's 9th season, is embracing the theme 'AIN'T NO STOPPIN' US NOW'!

Their competition team (pictured) recently won 5 gold and one platinum awards at Empire Dance Challenge competition held at Sweet Home Middle School. 'Mr. Pinstripe,' a tap routine choreographed by Miss Jayme, took the top award along with 'Best costume' and 'Top 10.' The team is preparing for two more upcoming local competitions: Summerdanse at Maryvale High School and NYS Dance Challenge at the Ken-Ton Commons.

Studio J's 9th annual recital will return to Shea's 710 theater after a 2-year hiatus on June 25th at 2pm. Tickets will go on sale May 15th and can be purchased at Shea's box office or ticketmaster.com.

In 1984, Willie Hutch Jones was dedicated to finding a way to combine his Professional NBA experience with the Los Angeles Lakers and his desire to advance the knowledge and selfesteem of children and young adults in his Buffalo hometown.

He achieved that goal by creating the Willie Hutch Jones Educational & Sports Program (WHJESP,) providing youth of all racial and socio-economic backgrounds with strong positive influences and special training in sports and educational areas.

Now, almost four decades and 10,000 kids later, Jones launched his organization’s 38th summer season on Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Annual Jackie Robinson Day. “Seventy-five years ago, Jackie Robinson made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut, advancing a legendary career that continues to inspire athletes of all ages and races,” Hutch said recently. “Before that debut, Robinson played baseball against the Buffalo Bisons in Offermann Stadium, as a member of the Montreal Royals. We are here today, at the Johnnie B. Wiley Amateur Athletic Sports Pavilion, to commemorate the iconic Jackie Robinson’s MLB Anniversary and honor his special connection to our city.

"We are also here to look forward, to the promise of future Jackie Robinsons, by announcing the launch of the thirtyeighth summer season of the Willie Hutch Jones Education & Sports Program.

Remembering Isaac C. Parker: The Victim Was A Veteran…

t never ceases to amaze me how Buffalo police can do no wrong when it comes to the east side community. Case in point; a recent police high speed chase ended on the eastside where a reckless shoot out endangered innocent citizens as well as other officers. I quote a section from the Buffalo Police manual which was cited in the April 21 Challenger article about the incident: “PURSUIT SHALL NOT be initiated if the reason for the attempted stop is ONLY for vehicle traffic law violations (VTL), misdemeanors or other non-violent felonies.”

Had it taken place in any other section of the city there would have been a huge backlash.

This also brings to mind the case of Isaac C. Parker who was murdered by Buffalo Police officers on Dec 6, 2012.

Parker was a Marine Corp Veteran and was deployed to the first Gulf war. He was an unarmed motorist who officers tried to take the keys out of his vehicle’s ignition.

What followed next was troubling to me and many others at that time. Both officers were supposedly reaching in the vehicle to get the key. Why were two officers reaching for the same key? Did Isaac attempt to drive off before or after he was shot? And how was the officer able to discharge his weapon while reaching for a key in the ignition and not hit his partner as well?

Isaac Parker, like so many of our young Black men joined the military for reasons of their own. And like Isaac, many Black men come home from military service only to get shot down like dogs in the streets of America by overzealous cops with itchy trigger fingers.

It takes a special kind of kid to go to his parents and say “mom, dad I want to be in the military.” Once this child serves and matures as an adult they come home, forgotten by the government and not respected as veterans by many.

Countless veterans come back home to the same environment they left. As a veteran, I always appreciate it when people, once they find out that I’m a Vet, say 'thank you for your service.'

We have Black Veterans living in every councilmatic district in this city - many of them homeless - including in Masten, University and Fillmore. There are even some WW2 Vets, as well as Korean War and Vietnam Veterans who have to walk the East Side’s cracked and broken up sidewalks.

Our Black leadership claims that veterans are their top priority during their campaign speeches just to get the veterans to vote for them. Some of these politicians may even be veterans themselves. Yet leadership said nothing in reference to the complaints of Veterans When Isaac C. Parker was killed by police. Instead, the officers that killed a U.S. Marine Veteran were praised.

Should Isaac Parker have been arrested for his alleged DUI? Yes. Should he have been shot down like a dog? No! America is free because of the BRAVE BLACK MEN AND WOMEN that decided to fight for a nation that to this day WILL NOT FIGHT FOR THEM. The next time you have the opportunity, ask an elected official to fix some of these community sidewalks so that old Black veterans can walk down the street and not trip and fall. Their first response will probably be that there is NO MONEY. And our response should be NO VOTE!

An Open Letter to Black Mothers on Mothers Day Mother’s Day is special for not only mamas and future mamas, but also for families who use the holiday to honor the caregivers and nurturers of the Black community.

While some of us literally grew up with our “surrogate” mothers, all of us had some level of big sisters, “play” aunties, God-mamas, and cousins to help with our rearing. It often takes more than a village and for our community, those connections tend to run long and deep. As we look back at the many who helped to raise us, and especially our own mothers who may have had to play multiple roles and work multiple jobs, to help keep us afloat, we take this day above all of the others, to celebrate those strong women! The following Open Letter/Tribute was penned by j.n. salters

his letter is for my mother. Our mothers. Grandmothers. Aunts. Sisters and all of the other Black women who continue to raise Black and Brown warriors in this battlefield we call America. Who constantly find ways to make ends meet—in a world that continually fails to acknowledge your worth and beauty—just to keep smiles on our faces. To the only women who can grow roses from concrete.

Turn scraps into Thanksgiving feasts. Who continue to love hard and wholeheartedly even when the world attempts to steal your joy. Still you rise.

I just want to say thank you. And that you are appreciated. Loved. Beautiful.

Needed. I need you. WE NEED YOU. You deserve so much more than the words on this page. Than your lived realities. Than the media portrayals that negate your wonder and caricature your splendor. Than the statistics that mock your circumstance. Ignoring your God-like abilities to raise invisible toy soldiers into Gabby Douglases and Quvenzhané Wallises. Turning forgotten flesh into souls on fire.

You deserve to have your faces carved into mountains. Plastered on dollar bills covering the faces of presidents who have stolen from you. Used your image against you. Lied to you. Made your plight invisible. You deserve to have your brown skin on every milk carton and news segment that privilege missing bodies that do not look like yours or your children’s. On the cover of every newspaper that fills its pages with stories of your fabricated inferiority. Leaving your existence in the margins. Near the end. At the back. We are Rosa Parks.

I wish everyone could see you from my eyes. Read the deep history embedded in your rich skin. The pigment of your imagination. The secrets that you hold in the arch of your back. How the sway of your hips creates masterpieces out of thin air.

Buffalo Bills Draft Sports fans if you are looking for something that resembles a full course meal with the meat and potatoes and the addition of bread and butter then look no further than the Buffalo Bills draft selections year after year. Brandon Beane once again was very methodical in this draft as he dove right into the first round by moving up to get a necessity piece to the team's defense.

After the first round move, he then looked to add a necessary piece to the team's offense. From there, the general managing guru added depth to some key positions as the Buffalo Bills always look to have a deep rotation. This year's recipe looked like this....

The first round selection at Pick 23 was CB Kaiir Elam from Florida. The Bills moved up two spots to solidify getting one of the best corners in the draft. The 6' 2" 200lb cornerback runs a 4.39 and moves very well and possesses admirable cornerback traits such as changing directions exceptionally well, has fluid hips, has great athleticism to recover, and can definitely cover short routes just as well as he can cover routes 20 plus yards down the field. Definitely a grade A pick to start off the draft.

In Round Two, we saw the Buffalo Bills at pick 63, take running back James Cook from Georgia. James Cook is a elusive runner who can catch out of the backfield. His sure hands in college make him a weapon in both the running game and the passing game. In college, Cook only had two fumbles, averaged 10.9 yards per catch and also averaged near 7 yards a carry. Oh yeah, he is also the younger brother of Dalvin Cook. If he can stay healthy, Cook should be a interesting piece to this Bills offense.

-More Questions Than AnswersMeanwhile, the DA’s office announced last week that 58-year-old Luz Pena of Buffalo was arraigned before Buffalo City Court Judge LoTempio on one count of Unlawful Use of Pasters Upon Ballot and one count of Unspecified Violation of Election Law for allegedly using a stamp to place the name of Byron W. Brown as a write-in mayoral candidate on numerous ballots in violation of New York Election Law. The alleged crime occurred while the defendant was working at a polling place inside of the Belle Center on Maryland Street in the City of on Buffalo on election day during last year’s hotly contested mayoral election around the same time Mrs. Grant was charged with alleged Election Law violation.

Why did the DAs office wait six months to press charges against Ms. Pena while dragging Mrs. Grant in and out of court?

Are they trying to show that Mrs. Grant’s situation is not a case of selective prosecution?

Ms. Pena’s felony hearing court date is May 16th Will they have a felony hearing or knock it down to a misdemeanor and keep it in City Court, then work out some kind of agreement with her?

Will they drag her thru the courts for the next six months?

Remembering The Legendary Coach Romeo McKinney

The legendary Romeo McKinney, a veteran Buffalo Public Schools basketball coach, made his transition in December of 2021at the age of 81 .

But he left an incredible legacy and mentored countless young boys during his tenure coaching the South Park basketball teams which dominated Section VI boys basketball in the early 1980s winning three Yale Cup titles and three Section VI titles!

McKinney built a Section VI powerhouse at South Park using a suffocating fullcourt defense that produced a bushel of points -- his team once scored 139 points in a game in 1982 -- and that was before the advent of the three-point shot. The Sparks won four Class A championships in six consecutive appearances in the finals from 1982 to 1987.

Some of coach McKinney’s players recently gathered at the Wiley Stadium to honor his memory and reminisce about those great years.

“We all remember and hold a great love, respect and rich pride about being a Spark and we still value Coach Romeo’s legacy and teachings,” said Pastor Tim Newkirk. “ Most of us own our own businesses and are responsible husbands and fathers because of his mentorship.”

They also bonded into a true brotherhood. Among those legendary players who came together: Lonnie Champ Bell, Maurice Rico McDuffy, Lamorris Bamma, Dean Keylon, Key Mack, Andre Akin, Vaughn Washington. Also Antonio McDuffy and Rev Frank Bostic. Pastor Bostic, said Newkirk, showed up to represent his schools honor - Mt. St. Joseph.

Coach Romeo graduated from Canisius College with a PhD in Education and was a career Basketball Coach and PE Teacher. He also coached for a period at Kensington High.

BLACK HISTORY continued from page 3 Slaves, and The Republic of New Africa, which demanded self-determination, land, and reparations for African Americans. During the height of the Cold War, Moore presented a petition to the United Nations in 1957 which demanded land and billions in reparations for people of African descent and it requested direct support for African Americans who sought to immigrate to Africa.

Moore also focused on local issues. In 1966, she participated in a sit-in at a Board of Education meeting in Brooklyn in 1966. Moore and the other protesters said board members failed to adequately fund schools in African-American communities. She also served as the Bishop of the Apostolic Orthodox Church of Judea and she co-founded the Commission to Eliminate Racism, Council of Churches of Greater New York.

While attending the funeral of former Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah in 1972, the Ashanti ethnic group bestowed upon her honorary title “Queen Mother.”

In 1989, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C. honored Moore and 40 other famous Black women in Brian Lanker’s photo exhibit, “I Dream a World.”

Moore’s activism continued through the mid-1990s, and she made her final public appearance at the Million Man March in 1995. On May 2, 1997, Queen Mother Moore passed away at the age of 98 from natural causes in a Brooklyn nursing home. At the time of her death she was survived by her son, five grandchildren and a great-grandson.

NBA Playoffs - Game 6 - Toronto vs Philly Toronto versus Philadelphia was 3-2 in favor of Philly going into Thursday night’s game. Toronto had fought back from a 3-0 deficit. The Raptors’ home court advantage in the Six is legendary because fans do not only gather inside Scotiabank Arena but also outside in Jurassic Park. This game would be only the third playoff game played here since the 2018 - 2019 season. The winner of the series will get to move on to Round 2, where the number one seed in the Eastern Conference, the Miami Heat await them.

The Raptors came out firing. At 8:04 in the first quarter Toronto was ahead 15-10. It didn’t seem as if the Raptors were tight at all.

But the 76ers James Harden was focused on A. attacking the basket and getting to the foul Dorcely line early on. His intentions helped cut the score halfway through the first to 15-14. As the quarter continued Toronto seemed to be taking more outside shots than Philly.

The Raptors finished the first up 34-29 with the home fans very much into the game.

Chris Boucher being inserted into the lineup in the first after OG Anunoby picked up his second foul was a major injection of energy. But the second quarter started just as the first ended with the 76ers playing both a 2-3 and a 3-2 zone enticing and baiting Toronto into shooting from the perimeter. So far though Joel Embiid, the possible MVP had not made an impact offensively.

That was not going to last long as the “Sleeping Giant” and maybe sleeper as an MVP candidate would soon awaken.

The quarter was filled with a bevy of shots leading to several lead changes. At halftime the score was 62-61 Toronto ahead. The Raptors’ hopes on playing a game seven was still alive. Both teams had several double digit scorers.

Chris Boucher led Toronto with 19 points. While Joel Embiid made up for his slow start leading his squad with 16 points.

Philadelphia came out swinging like “Rocky” in the Toronto’s Gary Trent takes basesecond half. By 8:48 in the line jumper over the outstretched third quarter the score was 76- hand of 76ers’ Tyrese Maxey 67. Philly was hitting on all and onlooker James Harden cylinders, inside and outside. I was hoping for a Chris Boucher siting after a timeout. But that was not the case. Instead there was a turnover resulting in another Tyrese Maxey three followed by a missed three pointer by Precious Achiuwa and Joel Embiid getting fouled. The lead had now ballooned to 13. You could hear the angst in the fans stained with fear as the Raptors couldn’t make a basket. At 5:20 in the third quarter the score was 87-67 Philadelphia. OG Anunoby finally made a basket for the Raptors at about 4:50 followed by a 76ers offensive foul.

But the Raptors run was quickly stopped . After a James Harden three the score at the 3:51 mark was 92-70. Coach Nurse called another timeout before things got completely out of hand. I couldn’t help but wonder how VanVleet was being missed at this time. With 30.3 left in the third the score was 97 - 75. Joel Embiid committed a foul on Chris Boucher then stepped over him a la Allen Iverson(look it up). That made Boucher jump to his feet and walk towards Embiid. The refs had to separate them. The officials also decided to review the foul as a possible flagrant foul. This inflamed the crowd so they serenaded Embiid with some love(that’s sarcasm). At the end of the third the score was 99-78 Philadelphia.

At the midpoint in the fourth quarter the Toronto offense seemed uncertain and discombobulated. The 76ers had taken the bite out of the Raptors and the spirit from Scotiabank fans.

Even with a considerable lead by Philadelphia, the full court defense of Tobias Harris on Pascal Siakam continued. The Raptors also decided to press but they could not claw their way back into this game. With 2:14 left in the game and the score 12694, Coach Nick Nurse emptied his bench and the 76ers Coach Doc Rivers did likewise. The season was coming to an end.

The team from the Six would not make it to Game Seven in this series!

“City Senior Connect” : New Program for Senior Citizens Airs on WUFO 1080 AM The City of Buffalo Division of Senior Services and Hospice & Palliative Care Buffalo, debuted “City Senior Connect” on WUFO 1080 AM /POWER 96.5 FM last week. The show can be heard every second Thursday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

The next several shows will air on May 12, June 9, July 14, and August 11. The schedule will continue September 8, October 13, November 10 and December 8.

Deputy Mayor Ellen Grant and Division of Senior Services Director Doug Ruffin will host the program, which is designed to keep older adults up to date on important health related information, as well as timely topics that include fitness, books, and much more.
