INSIDE ROCHESTER

Clarissa Uprooted:

Mural Pays Tribute to Rochester’s Legendary Jazz Club and the Dynamic 'Village' That Gave It Life

Clarissa Uprooted—a partnership of elders and youth committed to sharing the story of Rochester’s Black Wall Street—recently took the next step With the unveiling of the “Clarissa Uprooted” mural on West Main Street last Thursday, kicking off the 25th Clarissa Street Reunion weekend.

The mural symbolically covers a retaining wall of the I-490 highway, built in the 1970s by New York State Department of Transportation. Just blocks behind this wall, Clarissa Street was once a central corridor of the diverse and self-sufficient Third Ward (now known as Corn Hill). The majority Black community thrived here–beginning in the 1800s and booming during the 1930s-60s–before the community was torn down in the name of so-called “urban renewal.”

“We celebrate what we had as a community and recognize how much we’ve lost,” Clarissa Street Legacy treasurer, Katherine Sprague-Dexter shared. “This mural reclaims space right where it belongs, back at home in the old Third Ward.”

The mural is also a tribute to the legendary Pythodd Room jazz club. The Pythodd was part of this ecosystem, which included many Black-owned businesses like Vallot’s Tavern, LaRue’s, Scotty’s Drum Corps and Billiards, The Elks Club, Shep’s Paradise, repair shops, dry cleaners, salons/barbershops, grocery stores, a hotel, bookstore, funeral home, doctors, dentists, DJs and publishers. Clarissa Street was Rochester’s Broadway, Black Wall Street, and also part of the national Chitlin’ Circuit, where Black artists could safely stop for a week and play, stay, eat and connect with local artists & neighbors during a period when Jim Crow segregation and racist harassment made touring difficult.

Seventeen-year-old Sahiyra Dillard, a Youth History Ambassador with Teen Empowerment reflects, “Before working with the Black-owned Businesses images for not only the Clarissa Uprooted exhibit but also the virtual reality streetscape, I would’ve never thought to imagine such a beautiful neighborhood like Clarissa Street. Us youth need to know what really was taken from us, and hopefully one day we ALL can come together to make our community what we now know it can be.”

The photorealistic collage imagines two generations back on old Clarissa Street, performing in a “band” together–contemporary young musicians with internationally celebrated artists who came out of Rochester. As young people in the 1950s-early 1960s, these five jazz musicians launched careers playing in house bands at the Pythodd: Ron Carter (bass), Pee Wee Ellis (saxophone), Chuck Mangione (trumpet), Gap Mangione (piano), and Roy McCurdy (drums). Paul Hoeffler (jazz photographer) captured each of these images at the Pythodd for a student project while attending RIT. All are also Rochester Music Hall of Fame inductees.

A goal of the mural is to celebrate this excellence and encourage and carry on the tradition of developing Black and Brown young artists, community-builders, and entrepreneurs.

An intergenerational team of Clarissa St. elders who loved the Pythodd co-designed the mural with Teen Empowerment youth history ambassadors and Flower City Arts Center’s Expanding the Field (ETF) youth artists, with final composition by Britton Bradford (aka Un1Sun1), and painted by homegrown mural artist Ephraim Gebre (who also painted the John Lewis and Malcolm X murals in town).

Clarissa Uprooted is an intergenerational partnership of The Center for Teen Empowerment and Clarissa Street Legacy (formerly Clarissa Street Reunion Committee). Teen Empowerment is a youth organizing program in Rochester that hires youth to lead community change with their peers and community leaders.

Presentation to Address Buffalo Vacant and Abandoned Property

On August 29 Cheryl Harris, Community Liaison of the WNY Law Center, will give a presentation on "Buffalo Vacant and Abandoned Property” at 1423 Black Lives Matter Way (Fillmore Ave.) at the CAO Masten Resource Center. The event will begin at 6p.m. It is organized in conjunction with People Helping All Mankind (PHAM) to help the community of the Eastside address this looming problem due to the city demolition of structures without any plans to rebuild those structures.

Dr. Henry Taylor highlighted this problem as an influential reason for the challenges of the Black community in his report “The Harder We Run.” In this report he highlights demolition without strategic planning within the Black community on the Eastside as having a harmful effect that contributes to the underdevelopment of the Eastside.

The community is invited to this free event. The purpose is to unite people together to create solutions to this problem. In addition, a major objective is to prevent tragedies such as the harmful effects on the Black Community by the politicians who ignored constituents when they built the expressway through the Eastside. Also, the meeting aims to do more than put a band aid over the problem by changing the name of the Eastside to East Buffalo.

That Brown Bag!

Buffalo’s Premier Black Business Directory Releases Latest Volume

Black business in Buffalo is on the rise. From the go to longstanding dedicated businesses, to a whole new generation of emerging entrepreneurs offering a variety of new goods and services, the age of the Black entrepreneur is becoming normalized at every turn.

But where can you find a concentrated, dedicated directory that gives you immediate access to all this Black business?

The answer is That Brown Bag! Buffalo’s premier Black business directory that everyone can use.

Shantelle Patton, the creator of the directory is a dynamic game changing visionary who is currently the President of the recently revitalized Buffalo Urban Chamber of Commerce-Buffalo. She has worked tirelessly over the years to bring more awareness and access to Black businesses, ultimately changing the narrative and building a strong bond of support between Black business and patrons who want to locate them.

"I found that the common theme to Black owned businesses being overlooked was a lack of exposure,” said Patton, who is co-founder for artist development company The Dopeness Project. She is a 2017 Open Buffalo Emerging Leaders graduate, UB Citizens Planning school Champion for Change as well as the newest member of the Buffalo Niagara Partnerships Executive Exchange among her many group and board affiliations.

“The directory is designed for everyone in the community. Whether you prefer to search for contacts digitally or use a phone book looking for a local restaurant, plumber, doctor, or anything in between,That Brown Bag can help you find what you need and quickly. I believe that my directory offers a comprehensive and up-to-date list of companies and individuals that is invaluable to the community at large.”

Founded in 2018, Volume 1 of That Brown Bag was released as a pamphlet style booklet of listings and since then has had some updates along the way. This past June (Patton releases the annual directory during Juneteenth), the 7th volume of the directory was released in a beautifully designed hard cover book with much more than her past directory offerings, including making it available in three formats with a range of pricing from hardcover, paperback to digital download.

The latest edition of 336 pages offers unique graphics, vibrant colors and interlaced Afrocentric design making it more like a functional work of art. With the holidays approaching it would serve as a great addition to any household to support Black business even more this season because the directory will be your guide to find them!

The book includes businesses in arts and entertainment, dining, education, finance and administration, grooming, home improvement, libations, photography, publications, real-estate, venues, wellness and more. There is even a visual dedication image to the late dancer and creative entrepreneur Jimmy "Rook” Hawkins.

“It started out as a pamphlet style booklet that listed names and contact information. Today we have an immersive interactive resource that includes the stories of many of these brave entrepreneurs and community leaders,” said Patton. But finding local Black businesses does not stop in WNY as Patton has her sight set over the border bringing a vaster listing to the directory of Black Businesses. “I have also begun to amplify businesses just to the north of us in the Toronto area with the hopes of creating a more reciprocal pipeline of commerce between the two communities.” she said.

Shantelle’s strength in bridging the business to consumer gap and enhancing the quality of life for African Americans in the WNY is one of the many attributes that compliments her role as president of Urban Chamber of Commerce - Buffalo. The Chamber, which looks to play a critical role in supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs in our community, will be working closely with the Brown Bag initiative to help provide education and resources to business owners who may not otherwise have access.

“Through partnership with Brown Bag we will be able to leverage our extensive network of local businesses and community leaders to help raise awareness and support this important cause. Overall, the work with Brown Bag is just one example of how the Chamber is committed to supporting our community and ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive," said Patton. “I plan to continue locating Black owned businesses to amplify support connections and relationships that build equitable value in our community and to make this a movement that spans across the entire urban American landscape."

You can purchase the directory on www.brownbagcertified.com as well as on Amazon. Keep up with updates , events, signings, Black Businesses and more on social media on @thatbrownbag.

The Nat Turner Rebellion

The 192nd anniversary of the Nat Turner Revolt was August 23, 1831. The rebellion by a group of enslaved Virginians was called “the most significant uprising in American history” by National Museum of African American History and Culture director Lonnie Bunch. The National Museum of African American History has several Nat Turner related artifacts including his bible and a machete donated to the museum by a Southampton resident.

The Nat Turner rebellion, which took place in Southampton County, stands as the deadliest slave revolt in American history. That’s when Mr. Turner led a group of Black people in a revolt against slavery. Other enslaved Black people joined the uprising and Mr. Turner's troops grew to 60 to 70 people who fought White enslavers before being defeated by a militia. Turner’s rebels killed over 55 White people from August 21-23 in 1831.

Many of Mr. Turner's followers were killed or captured immediately but Mr. Turner escaped and evaded searchers for weeks before being captured on October 30, 1831.

On November 11, 1831 Nat Turner was hanged in Jerusalem, Virginia, after being convicted of leading a revolt against his enslavers. At least 18 Black participants in the uprising were executed along with him.

Black Business History

JIM BELL CLEANERS

On April 4, 1971 Jim Bell Cleaners officially opened its doors to the public. At that time the Buffalo Challenger reported that Jim Bell Cleaners was the first and only Black owned business ever built from the ground up with the expertise and talent of all Black contractors, sub contractors and craftsmen –The Afro American Builders Association; giving them their first major job. Throughout the years the business became a community staple. Bell believed in supporting business and giving back to the community. He even had the first “Freedom Wall” mural created on the side of the building adjacent to the cleaners with large images of Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, and Martin Luther King. In the late seventies he purchased the Challenger, but only remained for about four years. A true visionary, he also had dreams of building a Black Supper Club on the property he owned on the corner of Jefferson and Glenwood, going so far as having an architect draw up the plans. The original Jim Bell Cleaners was owned and operated by the late Jim Bell until he retired in the 1990s and sold the business. He made his transition in June of 2002. Jim Bell Cleaners continues to operate under new ownership to this day on Buffalo’s East Side.

HEALTH MATTERS

THE HEALING POWER OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: COLOR MATTERS

Double Up Food Bucks With Tops Making Fresh Local Food More Affordable!

Green Colored Foods

Theprimary healing color, green, the color of nature brings harmony to all in its presence. Green creates a feeling of inner peace, harmony, and balance. This balance brings us a feeling of newness and freedom of spirit and helps relieve stress and emotional problems. Green is associated with the heart and is thought to be beneficial for the prevention of heart disease and high blood pressure. It creates a sense of calmness and helps relieve problems associated with tension such as headaches.

Chlorophyl, which is at its highest in green leafy vegetables, needs to be part of every meal as it has a soothing and healing effect, balances the body’s metabolism, detoxifies, and helps the cleansing functions. Benefits from the green phytochemicals include protection from bacteria such as e-coli, food poisoning, and tumors. Green is used in the treatment of colds, influenza, hay fever, ulcers, malaria and cancer.

Green colored vegetables include artichokes, asparagus, celery, cucumber, Brussel sprouts, green beans, green lentils, green pepper leafy greens, lettuce, okra, peas, spinach, zucchini and broccoli

Broccoli, known as the “king of the Cabbage Clan,”, is the number one anticancer vegetable according to researchers. Broccoli contains vitamin A, B2 and B6, phosphorus, vitamin C, Beta-carotene, calcium, and folic acid that helps make red blood cells and DNA. It has a number of phytochemicals that protect against cell damage and cancers. It is a source of fiber, calcium, potassium, and iron. Broccoli helps lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, helps prevent cataracts, may reduce the risk of cancer, maintains strong bones, and keeps the digestive system functioning smoothly.

Green Colored Fruits

Avocado provides the perfect ratio of fat, protein, and carbohydrate all in one food. This super food contains glutathione, a substance that block 30 different carcinogens and has been shown to contain agents that can stop the AIDS virus from developing. Kiwi fruits contain more vitamin C than oranges. Other green colored fruits include green apples, green grapes, green melons, green pears and limes.

Double Up

Field & Fork Network recently announced a partnership with Tops Friendly Markets to pilot their Double Up Food Bucks NY program at two Tops locations: 1275 Jefferson Ave in Buffalo and 1000 Portage Road in Niagara Falls.

The program is designed to make fresh produce more affordable for individuals with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP – formerly known as Food Stamps) benefits by providing a $1 for $1 match on produce purchases. So every time you buy fresh fruits and vegetables, you are matched dollar for dollar, up to $5 on your SNAP benefit card.

Tops is the first large chain grocery store where the program is available.

“Without question people need access to healthy foods, and healthy quality foods” remarked Majority Leader Crystal Peoples Stokes.

"Double up Food Bucks aims to increases access to fresh produce and make it more affordable to individuals with supplemental Assistance Program by providing a one for one match on produce up to $5. That’s like cash in your pocket while you’re getting a nutritional vegetable or fruit to eat because clearly ‘we are what we eat.’ If we’re eating more fruits and vegetables we’re healthier people."

Thanking Tops and all those volved with implementing the initiative, she continued.

“I am six generations away from slavery. But my parents and my grandparents were not necessarily enslaved past that first generation but they were sharecroppers and so they always ate well because they grew what they ate. “

-Deputy Speaker Crystal Peoples

Director, Corporate Communications and PR, Tops; Lisa French, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Field & Fork Network; Jeff Cady, V.P., Produce and Floral, Tops; NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, Commissioner Barbara Guinn; Deputy Mayor Callie Johnson, PhD and State Senator Tim Kennedy.

I recently called Tops Market and asked if they could make a donation of baby diapers, baby wipes, and baby food. They said yes. I gave out the diapers, wipes and baby food during WUFO Radio's Thursday Movie night to mothers or individuals who came with their child or children. Pictured above, a mother who’s having twins, and the little dude named PaPa. At our final give-away July 31 at WUFO I gave out the rest to mothers who brought their babies. God woke me and told me to do something for the children. With the help of Tops, I was able to do something for the babies on the EastSide. -Samuel

She noted the presence of multiple community gardens in our neighborhoods and how many people now are growing their own foods in their yards. However for those who cannot, “they can come to Tops and double up the bucks, purchase what they would like to have and keep cash in their pockets! So this is a win win! Health is wealth...” she concluded.

From the grand stages of music festivals to the humble corners of his studio, Synyer poured his heart and soul into every rhythm he created. His drumming was a universal language that transcended barriers, resonating deeply with anyone fortunate enough to listen.

A Trailblazer in Music Education

Synyer's impact extended beyond his performances; he was a beacon of inspiration for aspiring musicians, and his legacy was firmly rooted in his role as a dedicated music educator. With an infectious passion for percussion, he mentored countless students, guiding them on their own musical journeys. His classroom was a sanctuary of learning and creativity, where the power of rhythm fused with the joy of discovery.

Synyer's work ethic was an inspiration in itself. His dedication to honing his craft was a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence. He instilled this same drive in his students, teaching them not just the art of percussion, but also the values of discipline, dedication, and the pursuit of one's dreams.

“He died just before the Friday Night Live kicked off,” recalled Marnetta. “We honored him last year and this year he’s gone.”

-Visionary-

Marnetta Malcolm is the stuff that real leaders are made of; one who cares about her community and makes things happen.

Promoting the Friday Street parties was something she was talking about doing long before the Tops massacre. She had already been on Jefferson for years bringing healing and light to the community she loved. Indeed, it was not a reaction to the tragedy to have the parties every week, simply the implementation of something Marnetta had already envisioned; a confirmation of the beauty and resilience she knew we possessed all along.

She’s always said the Friday Nights and Funk Fest weekend were designed to set an example to the younger generation; to show them “the way we were…the way Jefferson once was…” and how they too can come together and party and have fun without the violence.

What You Don't Know Can Really Hurt You...

Knowing ourselves is a fundamental aspect of assuming personal power and effectiveness. An essential job which all cultures should perform is to teach people the knowledge of themselves.

VOICES

BLACK AUGUST CALL TO ACTION!

Dear Editor:

Human beings are not born with knowledge of who they are, what they have been or what they can become. This is taught by the society through the family, the educational structures, the culture, the symbols and the religion of a people. If they are taught that they are a people of dignity, power and value and are given examples of such characteristics in the people around them, then they will become dignified, powerful and valuable. If they are taught that they are inferior, degraded and worthless, most of them so taught will become outcasts of that society.

Across America, right wing politicians and their allies are moving legislatively, socially and politically to make sure that the true history of African and African American culture and excellence is not included in the curriculums taught to the children of the next generation; White, Black, Brown and all in between. In nineteen states in America there are bills in the legislatures to stop real teachers from teaching the truth about history. Howard Zinn, an honest, professional, scholarly, White man's book: The People's History, A True History of America with all her faults and blemishes, has been banned from the classrooms and libraries across America.

Have no doubt, with all that has been happening in Buffalo, New York, such illegal and immoral bans are soon to come here and all of Erie County and they, the right wing politicians and their allies, will find a way to stop the truth of our collective history from being taught. The result - the stories of brave Black, Brown and White Men and Women will be erased from the collective consciousness of whole generations of our youth, the very people we all depend on to take the reigns of governance and bring all of us into a future of freedom, justice and equality ; a future where there is a win-win for everyone.

Right now, here in Erie County there is a fight going on about the building of a new jail. The reality of how that connects with all of us knowing ourselves is this: If you don't know your real history, as a Black, Brown, or White person, then you can not see the value of other human beings who look different and act differently than you do. If you don't know the truth about what was done to people to cause them to respond to life the way they do, then you will have no compassion when you learn about Black, Brown and Poor White people being brutalized and even murdered at The Holding Center that your tax dollars pays for.

If you have no knowledge of the true history of your ancestors and their role in creating the conditions of poverty and drug and alcohol addiction, miseducation and hopelessness that makes some people more vulnerable to criminal thinking and behavior than others, more likely to be arrested and placed at The Holding Center than others, you will not have the compassion necessary to say no to a new jail and yes to correcting the conditions at our current jail before even talking about anything new.

Then, if you also do not have knowledge of the value and worth of the Black and Brown people around you then you will not have an issue with the unprofessional, immoral and even criminal actions of the people who manage The Holding Center where they brutalize and even murder those under their care, custody and control for no other reason than that these people are Black, Brown, Poor White with no power or influence.

No, if you have no knowledge of the History of Black People not only in America but before our horrendous captivity and enslavement began, as cited by Our Own Honorable Judge Susan Eagan, you would not have any sense of moral outrage

or righteous indignation at jail staff treating the murderer of ten Black Citizens of Erie County like a celebrity. Where they even went so far as to make special arrangements for him to have a "Thanksgiving Dinner" with his family at the Jail. Just to note not only is Judge Susan Eagan a woman but she is a White woman as well.

These are the realities that continue to exist in Erie County because we don't study and don't know our history as human beings put here to share this planet for our collective benefit. Black history is the history of humanity. If we would have to courage to study it and face it with compassion and empathy we could begin to correct what is wrong with our culture both as reflected in our jail and in our society before we talk about building anything new and risking the same rotten culture of racism and brutality to be built into any new structure that is created.

You Know It's Bad When They Start Shooting Cars!

One beautiful Thursday morning, about two weeks ago, I became startled when I heard what sounded like gunfire outside my kitchen window. It was gunfire and when the bullets stopped flying, I had four bullet holes in a barely two weeks old, brand new car. I waited over 15 years to treat myself to a new vehicle and now, here it was, parked on the side of my house with a bullet hole in the windshield, one in the front passenger seat, another in the driver's side left front tire and a final one in the front door panel!

I tell you I was not happy, at all and I was a little bit- no, a lotta bit angry that someone would shoot up my car for no reason at all. But in talking to those who knew what had happened, I found out that my car actually provided refuge for the guy who had dashed behind it when the shooting started. So, in order to take some of the sting away of having my car shot up, I look to the occasion of having my 'blue angel' actually saving a guy from possibly being shot to death by taking the blunt of the bullets fired at the OK Corral-styled shooting on Hutchinson Ave..

My 2024, bright blue Equinox is being repaired right now. Bullets holes, as dangerous and as traumatic as they are, can be fixed in cars, but sadly, not all the time in people. I am hoping that young man whose life was probably saved by a higher power, realize the gift of life he was able to hold on to,a little longer; pay it forward' and become the protector of life, his and everyone else's life, in this guns-obsessed city we live in.

I believe in a higher power and until I find out differently, I am going to continue to believe that. I also know that had the shooting happened ten minutes later than it did, it would have placed me near or inside my car. I was in the last stage of getting dressed to leave my house. I shudder to think of what the outcome would have been if I had been caught in the crossfire or if my car was not there to provide a level of protection for the guy who hid behind it.

There are too many guns in this city and too many persons are dying and being shot by them. I believe that any argument or misunderstanding or even any wrongdoing done to a person can be resolved or settled without the taking of a precious life. There are many issues and problems that are

Texas lawmakers are trying to block federal funding for states that create laws to pay reparations for slavery. U.S. Rep. Brian Babin introduced H.R.4321 on June 23 with 13 co-sponsors. This bill would prohibit the federal government from providing financial assistance to states, local counties, and municipalities that approve what he terms “radical race-based” reparations laws.

Each and every day of the month of August we urge your readers to please commit to doing the following:

•Contact your local congressmen and Senators and demand that HR 4321 be withdrawn! (To find out the contact number and email address from your Congressional/Senatorial representatives please call (202)224-3121).

•Contact the speaker of the House “Kevin McCarthy,” the House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, and the Chairman of Congress, Tom Cole, and demand that Congress recuse itself from working with the conservative ALEC organization (American Legislative Exchange Council) due to Hr4321 being unconstitutional, bigoted and a violation to the human rights treaties of this country.

Please use the following hashtag all month long: #GenocidBill #HR4321 #REPARATIONSNOW

Lastly share this call to action with five people in your phone contacts daily (family, friends , etc.)

VOICE BUFFALO REMEMBERS BLACK AUGUST

Black August is a month of remembrance, reflection, and resistance in the fight for Black liberation. Black August began within the walls of prisons in the 1970s, where Black inmates united to resist the injustices, bring awareness to prison conditions, and advocate for the rights of those incarcerated. It has grown into a symbol of solidarity that transcends prison boundaries and ignites the flame of resistance in communities worldwide

Nora Massey of Buffalo is waiting to bring justice to her son Terrol Massey who died due to medical neglect on January 3, 2022, while in police custody in New York. Terrol was a healthy 16 year old when he was wrongfully convicted for a crime he did not commit and was then sentenced to almost 30 years in state prison, where he was wrongfully placed in solitary confinement for months on end.

encountered by people who don't live in the City of Buffalo. There are societal issues of drugs, drug addiction, burglaries, gang activities, thefts and not enough financial resources in suburban households as well. The only difference is: those suburbanites do not go out and shoot people or shoot up cars to try to resolve their issues.

We have to find better ways of dealing with stress or settling grudges, real or perceived. I am haunted by one of the young Lifesavers person who spoke at last week's Taking It To The Streets' event. When told by a person who said that they were today's and tomorrow's future leaders, the young lady said: " We are today's leaders, not tomorrow's leaders because I don't think we will live to see tomorrow because too many of us are dying now!"

Community, the time to save our children and to give them hope, is right now, before they become even more disillusioned. The members of the Lifesaver group and to an extent, all children, are looking to us to keep them safe. That is why the guns must go, now!

Local Black Businesses Date Back to 1800's

Early 1830s UNION BLOCK ESTABLISHED AT CANALSIDE

In the early 1800s a number of Black owned businesses were established at a 3-story building known as the Union Block at Canalside. One of the more colorful establishments was Dug’s Dive, operated by William Douglas, who escaped enslavement from Tennessee. Located below sea level, the bar is a literal “dive” one could not stand upright in. Douglas reportedly assisted freedom seekers on the underground railroad.

1918 - COLORED MUSICIANS CLUB FOUNDED

Racism in the musician’s union and local hotels gave rise to Local 533, a collective voice for Black musicians. They established a storefront on Broadway for union meetings, with an after hour jazz club on the second floor. The club remains to this day. The first floor is a museum, while the second floor is used for music lessons and jazz shows.

Let me start off this article by putting some fire on it. What in the good heaven bad hell was that Buffalo? Let me find out that you done bamboozled us again. The Buffalo Bills organization has the Bills Mafia fanatics believing that this team is going to be better than the team prior. My question is "Where"? What in the blue skies do you see developmentally that this team is better? And before, I hear the all the "you're just being a negative Nancy chatter" let me remind you that this Buffalo Bills team has been on the cusp of greatness since 2019. I understand that it's preseason but in preseason this should be like light work for the Bills. Can we get a crisp offensive line that does its job? How about a defensive line that can stop the run? Maybe we can get a preseason game without 12 penalties in the first half. Is asking for consistency at the most important position too much to ask? Sean McDermott, our present Bills Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the love of God and all his disciples. Can you please talk to Brandon "Big Baller" Beane about getting you some veteran linebacker leadership. Tyrell Dodson isn't cutting it. The Pittsburgh Steelers in week 2 of the preseason exposed the Bills for some of the inefficiencies we have been talking about since training camp as the Bills were defeated 27-15 in Pittsburgh. Hopefully the Bills can get it together against the Chicago bears coming up. For some of us watching this isn't just the preseason this is the first step towards the Lombardi trophy please act accordingly. Buffalo Sabres News

This week was a very sad and tragic week for the entire hockey world as the man we grew and love to hear and watch who was born in 1942 in St Catherine's Canada passed away last Thursday at the age of 81. Rick Jeanneret was the longest tenured play-by-play announcer in NHL history as he was best known for being the "Voice of the Sabres". Rick Jeanneret gave Sabres fans 51 years of influential, captivating, and entertaining sports news that can't be replaced or duplicated by any means. He was the sole reason why sports journalists like me even gave a pair of eyes to watch hockey. Hopefully, the Sports World will announce August 17th to be referred as RJ Day for a man who is well deserving of that accolade. Thank you Rick for the phenomenal conversation we had and most importantly the "Voice" that inspired many.

Buffalo Bisons

The month of August has not been the most successful month for the Buffalo Bisons baseball as the team had lost 9 of its last 12 games before the current three-game winning streak that the Herd is on now. The Bisons bats have been very active as of late as they've put up 28 runs in the last three games while holding Rochester to just 10 runs. The Bisons will look to continue moving in a positive direction as they face the Syracuse SkyChiefs on the road this week.

RADNEY'S BILLS REPORT

Bills Look Very Sloppy in 27-16 Loss to Steelers

Never mind the final score. The key aspects of this preseason game was the inability of Bills the offensive line to look like a well-oiled machine. They instead looked like players who never played together.

Let’s have some real talk Bills fans .Offensive lineman Tommy Doyle and Spencer Brown could not start for any NFL team. They should be playing in the XFL or USFL and to make matters worst they both were drafted by Brandon Beane. Bills General manager Brandon Beane and Head Coach Sean McDermott must take full responsibility for a bad offensive line due to their poor draft picks. It also looks like the Bills could have benefitted from practicing with another team because the Pittsburgh Steelers came out ready to play, while The Bills seemed flat and very slow getting off the ball.

My new offensive line starters should be Ryan Bates at Center, Left Tackle Dion Dawkins, Left Guard Ike Boettger (Looking good after Torn Achilles injury two years ago), Right Guard David Edwards, and Right Tackle David Quessenberry. My back up line men would be Connor McGovern, Richard Gouraige (could become a starter during the season at tackle position, very impressive preseason), O’Cyrus Torrence (footwork improvement needed), Greg Mancz (Backup Center), Alec Anderson, and Ryan Van Demark (practice squad).

Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott said regarding beat down given to his team by The Pittsburgh Steelers, that it was “Something we have to learn from.” The Bills had 12 penalties for 90 yards in the first half and McDermott said,” Unacceptable . We must have better discipline”. “They (Steelers) outcoached and out played us. We’ve got to go back to the drawing board.”

Bills Offensive Tackle Dion Dawkins said this about the line’s lackluster play: “I Don’t think there’s any excuse. We have to come out as a unit and do things much better. We must use this game as a lesson and learn from it. Our guys must play physical and continue to prepare for the upcoming season. We must get back to practice with a better mindset and take this loss to heart for our betterment.”

Yes, Tommy Doyle has been ruled out for the season and Brandon Shell retired last week from football. This is proof that only the strong survive in the National Football League.

Bills cornerback Christian Bedford said: “It felt good to be back out there.” Christian has been a pleasant surprise since he showed up last year as a rookie out of Villanova and continues to impress along with Kair Elam. These corners will see plenty of action during the upcoming season.

Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott needs to get his players attention by cutting veteran players like Center Mitch Morse (nice guy just TOO many concussions and age); running back Damien Harris (Chiseled body just TOO many muscles future could be in the WWE) who can’t stay on the football field due to soft tissue injuries. That’s why New England Patriot Head Coach Bill Belichick had to get rid of him. The Bills have two rookie undrafted free agents, Jordan Mims and Darrynton Evans, who can run the football in between the tackles and catch the ball out of the backfield. They need to sign a veteran backup QB like Nick Foles or someone else with a proven track record of success in the NFL. Matt Barkley is too slow and his arm lacks strength to get the ball to open receivers down field. The Bills are known as a finesse football team and the physical beatdown given to them by the Pittsburgh Steelers did not change anyone’s mind on their makeup.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin had his team fired up and ready to run through a brick wall for him, while Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott’s team showed up flat and gave a lackluster performance resulting in being down 27-15. It’s time for Sean McDermott to Coach his team up with more physicality and discipline on the football field.
