report unit, so when testing you plug in the hand held PC to the zonal report unit and it goes through the lights indicating any faulty units. You then look to the drawing to find where the lights are situated and make the necessary repairs.

The work included installing a Thorlux platform 2 emergency lighting system. This system is fully addressable, which means there is no more manual testing of emergency lighting by shutting down the power and manually checking the lights.

The zonal report switch can take up to 30 lights so marking each light is essential. All the LED lights are interlinked so the whole system is addressable, which saves the costly maintenance and the inconvenience faced when manually testing conventional systems.

The system is installed in zones and each zone has a control unit wired into the lights in that zone. The emergency LED lights are then monitored by the zonal

We also carried out normal 240V electrical works and 3-phase 440V works on the air-conditioning and air handling plant.

“We have worked with MEH Facilities Ltd on a sensitive refurbishment project for UCLH throughout the Queens Square Campus. The Works required close condition between the client's various departments. Due to the nature and continued use of the building as a clinical centre of excellence, which was not to be disrupted, much of the work was carried out at night and weekends. They proved a very professional and organised first class installation of mechanical and electrical services in challenging circumstances.” Andrew Munn – Senior Projects Manager Kind & Co. Ltd

HEALTHCARE CASE STUDIES:

Royal Brompton Hospital Value: £513,000 The areas we worked in were the operating theatres, theatre recovery, plant rooms, ward staff area, reception and clean corridor. In order to retain critical path continuity the work had to be carefully planned with the medical teams. The electrical work consisted of general power and lighting, installing a fire alarm system interlocked with the main system, installing a nurse call system, and upgrading installations with armoured cables. There was specialised electrical work, which consisted of a UPS/IPS back up power system, which retains power in the recovery unit in a power failure situation.

A special lighting system was installed in the recovery ward so fluorescent lighting could be dimmed. Mechanical works included installation of air handling units on the roof, with flow and return pipes in existing plant rooms, duct and ventilation in the recovery ward and with air flow controlled electronically. We installed gases to bed head units in the recovery ward and a new medical gas supply from the basement to the 3rd floor, to upgrade the supply to cope with extra demand from the ward and theatres.

“Over the years I have worked with MEH Facilities Ltd on many M&E Projects of all sizes which, by their very nature, always carried high levels of difficulty. They have always performed consistently well in achieving quality and programme through close liaison with the medical teams. Their professionalism from management, trade skills, Record Drawing, O&M’s through to Commissioning and Final Account has always proven exemplary.” Mark Lynn – Royal Brompton Hospital Project Manager

We also supplied hot and cold water services, waste and sanitisation pipework and a steam system.

“We have used MEH Facilities for a number of small quoted Projects in addition to some Emergency Repairs and have always found them to provide a responsive service at good value.” Philippe Ahtuam Capital Projects Manager Vinci Facilities

The Cold Water Meters were installed in areas instructed by the client and included an optional BMS Data Connection for future use. We prefabricated and installed the pipe work and then arranged a shut down via the hospital facilities team to enable a changeover to be carried out and the final sections of copper pipe work installed.

HEALTHCARE CASE STUDIES:

The Royal London St. Bartholomews and The London Chest Hospital Value: £638,000 Following a Legionella Risk Assessment by others, the Health Authority in conjunction with Ingleton Wood Consultants prepared a specification for the Remedial Works which we successful tendered. The works involved the removal of deadlegs, reducing the capacity of storage tanks, replacing tanks, Lining tanks, correcting pipework errors, installing Hot Water Secondary pipework, descaling Calorifers, installing Chlorine Dioxide Dosing Machines, fitting insulation and cleaning taps.

As the sites were operational, much of the work had to be well coordinated and carried out either out of hours or with carefully planned shut downs. We were able to accelerate a proposed 3 year programme into an 18 month programme of works.

“MEH Facilities Limited completed all works to a very high standard and within budget. They liased very closely with Hospital staff and Skanska Project Managers to ensure minimal disruption while progressing the works to programme. We were very satisfied with the manner in which the works were carried out by MEH Facilities Limited and would certainly recommend them for future projects.” Alan Hayman Mechanical Associate / Affiliate CIBSE AIHEEM

HEALTHCARE CASE STUDY:

St Ann’s Hospital Blocks G and H Value: £35,000 MEH Facilities were commissioned by Barnet, Enfield & Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust to carry out this challenging contract. The contract, valued at £35,000, covered electrical refurbishment works in the administration blocks, including the replacement of distribution fuse boards with new MCB distribution boards, and remedial electrical works recommended in a previous electrical test and inspection programme. Prior to replacing the existing distribution boards it was necessary to identify all areas that the individual circuits served as in most cases the circuits were not marked. The replacement of the distribution boards involved a number of shut downs over weekends, that required careful planning and close liaison with the hospital's engineers and staff. MEH Facilities were able to carry out the shut downs with minimal

disruption, maintaining services wherever possible. The remedial works involved repairs and the installation of additional sockets in the offices, to prevent the need for extension leads. The new sockets were wired from the existing ring circuits and involved the isolation of the circuits. This required careful planning and close liaison with the hospital's staff to keep disruption to a minimum. MEH electricians working arrangements were very flexible and some of the works were carried out early in the mornings and at weekends as required. In addition to the specified works, MEH Facilities successfully removed two 4m cast iron street lighting columns and replaced them with client supplied 4m steel raising and lowering columns, complete with post top lanterns.

“On behalf of the client, we appointed MEH Facilities Ltd to carry out the project based on their very competitive Tender and their proposals for carrying out the works. The main works comprised changing the existing distribution boards with new MCB boards. This involved a number of shut downs which required close liaison with the hospital staff and out of hours working due to the usage of the buildings. MEH Facilities were able to carry out the shut downs with minimal disruption and maintained services wherever possible. The project was handled efficiently from start to finish and we would have no hesitation in recommending MEH Facilities Ltd in the future.” Paul Thomason Commercial Heating Director Phoenix Compliancy Management

HEALTHCARE CASE STUDY:

St Michael’s Hospital Magnolia Ward Value: £27,000 MEH Facilities were commissioned by Barnet, Enfield & Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust to carry out this challenging contract. The contract valued at £27,000 covered electrical refurbishment works in Magnolia ward which was fully occupied with patients 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The works included the replacement of existing distribution fuse boards with new MCB distribution boards in a new cupboard location and remedial works recommended in a previous electrical test and inspection programme. The formation of a new cupboard to house the new MCB boards involved installing a one hour fire rated partition in the existing adjacent linen cupboard and diverting the existing heating pipes. The installation of the new distribution boards in the new cupboard involved installing new sub main cables from the existing isolators and extending the existing sub circuits to the new MCB boards in the new position.

The changeover to each distribution board involved the shut down of the supply for several hours, which required extensive preparation work including identifying the individual circuits to minimise the shut down time. This also involved MEH Facilities staff in careful planning and close liaison with the hospital’s Ward manager to minimise inconvenience to the patients. To further minimise disruption the works were carried out on a Saturday. The remedial works involved some repairs, earth bonding the replacement of the existing external canopy lighting, the installation of emergency lighting in the dining room and toilets, two of the wards, the roof space and the new electrical cupboard. Whilst carrying out the remedial works MEH electricians liaised closely with the hospitals staff to keep disruption and patient inconvenience to a minimum and worked in a flexible manner to ensure the works were carried out at the most convenient times.

“On behalf of the client, we appointed MEH Facilities Ltd to carry out the project based on their very competitive Tender and their proposals for carrying out the works. The main works comprised replacing the existing distribution boards with new MCB boards. This involved a number of shut downs which required close liaison with the hospital’s staff and out of hours working due to the usage of the buildings. Norwood School Value: £232,921

The project at Norwood School consisted of the replacement of defective pipework, fittings, valves, expansion bellows and brackets running in ducts from the main plant room to the school buildings. This job required careful management and time efficiency. On site at the same time as us, asbestos was being cleared ahead of our works and therefore all surveys were unable to be carried out by ourselves and the consultant. When access became available we commenced our works, which had to be phased over the term to enable the full use of the school. This was very successful. Unfortunately we also discovered a problem with the red oxide paint of hot water pipes causing the production of toxic fumes. A strict health and safety method statement was implemented involving breathing protection and ventilation air being forced in and out of the duct.

The discovery of completely rotten pipework meant a lot of fabrication and longer hours out of School time, to insure these could be replaced without causing disruption to the school. Once all new installations were in place and tested, follow on insulation was applied. Throughout this project not one school day was lost or access denied. The project was successfully completed within the 6 months programme. “MEH Facilities Ltd has provided a consistent, highly professional service which has been continued throughout the project at Norwood School. This was an extremely difficult project with the works being carried out during term times in service ducts below the corridors of the school, with all services being interrupted to keep all heating and water services operational.” Trevor Childs Sir Fredrick Snow & Partners

EDUCATION CASE STUDIES:

Grasmere Primary School Value: £16,000

MEH Facilities were commissioned by Ensigna Construction Ltd on behalf of Hackney Learning Trust to carry out this challenging contract during the 2014 school summer holiday period.

The new fire alarm system was successfully installed and commissioned in the contract period.

The contract covered electrical refurbishment works to this pre war built school within the six week summer holiday period and the works comprised:

The work in the external toilets included stripping out the existing electrical installation, installing a new distribution board, new lighting and time switch controls for the existing heating and water heating. The installation was carried out in PVC cables run in surface fixed galvanised steel conduit.

• The installation of a new addressable fire alarm system • Rewiring of the external toilets • Rewiring of the kitchen.

The rewiring of the kitchen was carried out using the existing steel conduit with extensions to additional socket outlet positions.

The fire alarm works involved stripping out the existing system and installing a fully addressable system that included a new control panel and new smoke and heat detectors, wired in surface fixed FP 200 cable.

All works were successfully planned, programmed and completed in the contract period before the school returned from the summer break.

Whitmore Primary School Value: £215,000

MEH Facilities were commissioned by Ensigna Construction Ltd on behalf of Hackney Learning Trust to carry out this challenging contract during the 2014 school summer holiday period. The contract covered the complete rewire of this pre war built school within the six week summer holiday period and the works comprised: • The installation of a new main intake panel board and associated sub mains. • Rewiring of the lighting and power circuits. • Stripping out the existing lighting fittings and installing new energy efficient lighting and emergency lighting. • The adaptation and extension of the existing fire alarm system. The contract required the rewiring to be carried out utilising the existing containment system where possible with PVC conduit extensions to the new equipment positions. However, it was soon discovered that this was not going to be possible mainly due to the condition of the existing PVC mini trunking and we were subsequently instructed to remove the existing PVC mini trunking and install new surface fixed PVC conduit. This variation set us a considerable challenge to complete within the allotted period especially as the work mainly involved working from platform towers.

However, by effective, planning, project management, full time site management weekend working and a considerably increase in on site labour (during critical stages there were up to 20 operatives working on site) the works were completed on time. The installation of the new energy efficient lighting involved over 500 light fittings of which over a half were suspended from the high ceilings in the classrooms. Installing the light fittings again mainly involved working from platform towers. Due to manufacturing logistics the last batch of 70 classroom light fittings were not delivered until 4 days from the date of the school opening but again by effective planning and allocation of sufficient resources these were successfully installed in sufficient time. The fire alarm works involved moving the existing fire alarm panel and the installation of additional smoke and heat detectors. This work was successfully carried out tested and commissioned in the contract period using a specialist supply chain partner. The installation of the new main intake panel board involved full liaison with UK Power Network, the stripping out of all the existing main switch gear and installing a new sub main from the service head.

PUB & RESTAURANT CASE STUDIES:

Hoop & Grapes Aldgate Value: £27,000

Located in the heart of the City of London you will find the Hoop and Grapes in Aldgate within a short stroll of Whitechapel, Aldgate Tube and Mansell Street. Closing the doors to their clients while the old R22 air conditioning systems were being replaced was not an option. The low efficiencies and increased running costs of the ageing systems coupled with the ban of (virgin) R22 refrigerant for servicing were the deciding factors to carry out the replacement. To avoid disruption to both clients

and staff, MEH de-commissioned the redundant systems outside of working hours and installed four upgraded A/C heat pumps all in new locations. All electrical works associated with the project were carried out by us. “I have worked with MEH on a number of difficult Repair & Installation Projects and have always been very pleased with the response and quality of workmanship.” Mike Mulkerrin Area Building Manager

Thames Court Hotel Shepperton Value: £12,000

The project was to replace and upgrade the Heating and Hot Water Boiler within the managers accommodation and to replace the Heating & Hot Water Boiler within the plant room which serves the bar and restaurant areas of the premises. The pipework in the Plant Room serving the bar and restaurant areas needed to be reconfigured to incorporate a low loss header and pumps to serve the various zones. The existing floor standing boiler was replaced with two wall mounted, sealed flue condensing boilers to improve the energy efficiency of the system.

“The Heating at the premises had always been a problem and MEH Facilities Ltd were able to accurately diagnose what was required to improve the operation of the Heating System whilst keeping within the budget we had for improvements as part of capital works.” Mandeep Uppal Graduate Area Building Manager

The Clachan Public House Kingley Street, W1 Value: £8,200

The works involved the replacement of the Heating & Hot Water Boiler which served all areas of the premises. The works were essential to make the system reliable yet it was not possible to have the works carried out during normal working hours due to the location of the boiler room and the fact that services needed to be maintained. We carried out the works after the pub closed over a series of evenings initially carrying out prefabrication of pipework and low loss header in preparation for the evening when we removed the existing boiler and installed the new boiler and connected to the existing parts of the system. By carrying out the works on an out of hours basis we were able to complete what was seemingly a very complex operation with no problems or loss of service.

“We held a meeting at the start of this project and discussed the options to get the works completed with the least amount of disruption. MEH suggested the works be undertaken out of hours which worked really well for the oultet.” Mike Mulkerrin Area Building Manager

COUNCIL CASE STUDIES:

Harrow Leisure Centre Value: £135,000

A tricky task to remove existing 100mm heating circulation pumps and replace with new dual sets including their isolation valves, electrical supplies and BMS connections. The centre operates 7 days a week and our only window was from 11.00 pm – 6.00 am. A major task was to insert new isolation valves onto 200mm Common mains so we could work away from the mains onto individual pump sets.

“We have worked with MEH Facilities Ltd on a range of projects which they have secured by competitive tender. On each occasion we have found them to professionally and diligently undertake the required works, some of which have been complex projects.” Mike Perschky Project Manger

Working with our appointed freezer partner we had to monitor the rate of temperature decrease in these mains from 11.00 pm so they could calculate the freeze and actual operating time for us to weld the flanges and install the valves before returning the system back to operation before the 6.00 am start up. Although complicated the work went as ‘sweet as a nut’ without any disruption to the centre which is one of the largest in Europe.
