Needed: Detroit Mayor who inspires he issues facing the next Mayor of Detroit — whether it is the incumbent or one of the challengers — are daunting by any measure. High unemployment, rising crime, a floundering school district and a financial crisis are enough to confound any leader. The symptoms of these ills are even tougher to grapple with.

Wealth and people continue to flee the city, regardless of race. The shrinking tax base has created permanent structural deficits that cannot pay for the current level of services. Even police and fire jobs are on the line. And for the first time in recent memory, the Detroit City Council created and adopted its own budget, forcing on the executive branch different priorities.

These issues raise some interesting questions. Who would want the job in the first place? Second, and less flippantly, what kind of person is best suited to confront these issues, solve them and lead Detroit out of its economic and social morass? Some have implied

workers and ultimately their constituents. Who is best situated to reestablish the executive branch of government as a serious place of business and problem-solving? Which individual can best restore confidence in the Office of Mayor?

Can Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick recapture the goodwill and promise that he brought with him nearly fours years ago? Is the experience and fortitude of a Freman Hendrix needed?

What would the historic election of the first woman Mayor mean for the city if Sharon McPhail’s savvy pushes her over the finish line first?

The trait most urgently needed is the ability to inspire confidence: confidence in one’s leadership and integrity, confidence in one’s ability to solve tough issues and confidence that the next Mayor will never embarrass our city or region. With this kind of confidence comes a mandate to lead and to make tough choices. Then maybe things will start looking up.

We disagree with these views.

While the issues mentioned above are serious, the various responses to them will not decide the election. We believe that this election will be a referendum on leadership and integrity.

Incomplete List I am e-mailing you in regards to the June 2005 issue. On the cover of the issue you have put the names of the deceased whom you stated in other words where murdered while on the job in Detroit. My family and I are very bothered by the fact that you missed some of the more recent tragedies that took place while at work and in Detroit.

For one, my father and brother, Yousif and Jack Yono, and another I could think of is Haithem Bahri.

These three men where taken from this life while they where working to make a living and trying support their families, which is exactly what your articles title hits. It is very upsetting to see that you included names of which the deceased was not in a store, not at work, and not even in Detroit, which is what the article is supposedly focusing on.

The Name Game I noticed that in the story entitled “Call Me Sam” (June 2005) you listed “Susan” as a popular (American) name for Chaldean women. This is slightly ironic, given that the origin of the name “Susan” is derived from Shushan or Shoushan, a Middle Eastern name that Assyrian and Armenian women have.

The name Shoushan means “Lily.”

STUDENT FILES ETHNIC INTIMIDATION SUIT A Chaldean University of Michigan student has filed a civil lawsuit alleging ethnic intimidation in connection with an alleged attack by members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

The student, who has asked not to be identified, said that on February 13, 2004, he was punched, kicked and repeatedly called a “sand nigger” by seven or eight SAE members.

The student claims he was an innocent bystander in a fight between SAE and another fraternity.

“He was on the street and got caught up in the melee,” said the student’s attorney, David Nacht of Nacht & Associates.

“The main point if this suit is to ensure that students on campus are free of the fear of assault, especially based on ethnic intimidation,” Nacht added. “No charges have been filed in this case and none are expected, which is one of the reasons we’ve chosen to act.”

The four-count complaint filed in Washtenaw County Civil Court names SAE as defendant, along with individual members and officers.

According to Nacht, SAE was placed on suspension as a result of the evening’s events.

WALKING THE WALK Members of the Chaldean American Student Association (C.A.S.A) of Wayne State University participated in Walk America for the March of Dimes Foundation on Sunday, May 1.

The walk in Troy helped to raise money for the fight against premature births and saving babies. The members walked the entire eight miles in the cold and rain.

NETWORKING ON THE ISLAND More than a dozen Chaldeans, including board members of the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce, spent a recent weekend on Mackinac Island during the annual Detroit Regional Leadership Conference. The conference is one of the state’s biggest networking events. More than 1,500 people attended the June event, which gets bigger every year.

Main issues on the agenda included the Super Bowl coming to Detroit, what to do about financing Cobo Center and mass transit — or the lack thereof — in Metro Detroit.

PROGRAM SEEKS EXPATRIATE IRAQIS The United Nations Development Programme and the International Organization for Migration are jointly implementing the Iraqis Rebuilding Iraq Programme (IRI) in coordination with the Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation of Iraq.

STORE OWNER SHOT IN SOUTHFIELD Bashar (Paul) Kas-Mikha continues to recover after being shot in the head during a robbery of his party store in Southfield.

On June 2, Kas-Mikha, 41, was working alone at the 10-Lahser Party Store, which he has owned for 15 years. When a customer took a bag of items and left without paying, Kas-Mikha followed him outside and forced him to return to the store, then went to call police. The assailant then shot him in the head.

Kas-Mikha is recovering in an undisclosed hospital following surgery. He is unable to see and it is unknown if his sight will return.

The suspect is described as 18-22, a 6-foot-2, 180pound light-skinned black man wearing shorts, an orange football jersey with the number 12 on the front, and a light-colored baseball cap.

“Party store owners and police have a pretty good working relationship in Southfield. We’re appreciative of the business people that are here,” Detective John Harris, Southfield Police’s public information officer, told the Chaldean News. “When something like this happens, we expend everything we can to catch the person. MANNA NAMED MICHIGANIAN OF THE YEAR Martin Manna was among a dozen citizens named Michiganian of the Year by the Detroit News. Manna is the managing partner of Interlink Media, executive director of the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce and Martin Manna a co-publisher of the Chaldean News.

The Detroit News cited Manna’s involvement in numerous Chaldean causes.

“Manna has essentially become a one man community clearinghouse, the first stop for help with everything from fundraising to immigration snags,” the May 29 article reads in part.

Other honorees included the Detroit Pistons’ Chauncey Billups, the Rev. Dr. Charles G. Adams and State Supreme Court Justice Maura D. Corrigan.

Volunteers are needed to act as ambassadors and to provide tours of Shenandoah Country Club for an Open House on July 19 and July 20.

On each day, Shenandoah will be open to the public from noon-8 p.m., and members of CIAAM are encouraged to invite their family, friends, neighbors, business associates and others to tour the facility.

The goal is to get the word out that Shenandoah is a public club with private amenities.

There will also be a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by cocktails, dinner and Chaldean classical music, at 6 p.m. on July 21. Tickets are $150 per person and benefit the Chaldean Community Cultural Center. Visit www.ciaam.com to sign up as a volunteer.

CFA ELECTIONS SCRAPPED Board elections for the Chaldean Federation of America were abruptly postponed on June 23, just a few days before the June 26 election.

Instead of elections, Bishop Ibrahim N. Ibrahim will instead appoint an eight-person board “temporarily, for one or two years,” he told the Chaldean News.

It will be up to the committee, the Bishop said, if future elections occur.

The CFA, which has the purpose of being an umbrella organization to all Chaldean groups, has been under fire. Critics call the group ineffectual and mired in petty politics.

Bishop Ibrahim declined comment except to say, “We want a very strong CFA, and we want all active organizations to be part of it.”

Hany Choulagh, the CFA’s vice chairman, said he

“wished things could have been done differently,” but acknowledged that “something needs to be done.”

“We have had some problems with organizations pulling out of the federation,” he said. “I welcome anything that serves the Chaldean Federation of America. I wish that the whole Chaldean community would work with the new selected board for the best of our community, regardless of any personal problems or differences. I wish for CFA to stay a representative of the whole Chaldean community here in U.S., with our relations with the homeland of Iraq and with our ChaldoAssyrian brothers.”

Choulagh said he had planned to run as a board member, not for a position on the executive staff. “Now if the Bishop asks me, I’d be happy to serve,” he said.

Choulagh had one final thought on CFA’s future.

“The new board should act separately from the church, not directly under the church’s direction because it is a civil organization,” he said.

USAID Administrator Andrew Natsios is among the conference’s featured speakers. Chairman of the Iraqi Parliament, Hachim al Hassani, Iraqi Minister of Public Works, Nasreen Barwari, Iraqi Minister of Planning and Development, Dr. Mahdil Haffath, and Vice President of the Iraqi Government, Barhim Salah have all been invited.

USAID is an independent federal government agency that receives guidance from the Secretary of State.

USAID programs are implemented in coordination with the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Coalition country partners, nongovernmental organizations and private sector partners.

NOTE from the PRESIDENT At the Half Year Mark!

We are more than halfway through 2005 - CALC’s “Year for the Seniors.” This Clair Konja past month, I was honored that women from the CALC were among so many people appreciated by Patriarch Emanuel III Delly for making a significant contribution for the Chaldean Seminary in Iraq. We know that our funds are being put to good use. Six young men recently joined the Seminary and are on their way to becoming Chaldean Priests.

Members of the CALC had an extraordinary opportunity to have lunch with Patriarch Delly at a private meeting in June. During the lunch, he was warm, open and invited us to ask questions concerning Iraq, priest shortages, and other issues concerning many of us.

We have continued our “Year of the Seniors” by entertaining parents and grandparents living at the senior home during our Mother/Daughter and Father/Son luncheons. It never ceases to amaze me that our seniors, no matter their age or English ability, still come out to learn more English, be educated about Social Security, and other issues that confront them.

We would not be able to accomplish all that what we do without help from you. Thank you for your support. We would love see more of you become more involved in our organization. We can always use more volunteers.

LUNCH WITH THE PATRIARCH EMMANUEL III DELLY CALC was happy to host a luncheon with Patriarch Emanuel III Delly, who was in town from Baghdad.

On June 3 at Shenandoah Country Club, about 25 women shared with the Patriarch a pleasant afternoon discussing topics important in the lives of Chaldeans today. Many women asked him a series of questions including, will Chaldeans in America get more priests for their parishes? Patriarch Delly complimented CALC for their work and what they have accomplished over the past 44 years. The CALC donated $10,000 for helping the Patriarch fulfill the work of God.

LEARNING THE LANGUAGE Not too long ago, one of our seniors from the Chaldean Manor wandered away from the retirement home and ended up walking alone and lost for hours, miles away from her home in Southfield. She had taken a wrong turn coming back from the local convenience store. A local police officer noticing the distraught senior walking on the sidewalk, with tears rolling down her face, tried to help her find her way back home. But because of the language barrier, it took the officer a great deal of time to figure out where she lived. To prevent problems like this, the CALC is teaching seniors everyday English — words to get by with. They are being taught to know their address, telephone numbers and to identify signs that may call for caution. On June 17 at the

Chaldean Manor, Chaldean Seniors were on their fourth English lesson and learning many words that will prove useful to them on a daily basis.

“The seniors really enjoy these English sessions,” stated CALC’s project director Brenda Khamarko.

“They are eager to learn and can’t wait until we return for their next lesson.” The CALC returns each month to teach new phrases and words to the seniors.

APPRECIATION DAY On June 13 at Shenandoah Country Club, five board members of the CALC joined Patriarch Emmanuel III Delly to honor those who have donated to the Chaldean Seminary. Clair Konja, Rosemary Antone, Sally Najor, Bernadette Najor and Julie Hakim were among more than 100 people honored by the Chaldean Diocese. The funds

STRENGTHENING CHALDEAN FAMILIES PROGRAM BEGINS IN TROY The Chaldean American Ladies of Charity is pleased to announce the Strengthening Our Chaldean Families Program in Troy Program. This prevention program is developed to improve parent-child relationships and family communication. The program involves participation by Chaldean families with children ages 10-15. Children and their parents meet once a week for twelve weeks.

Program sessions include: Setting Goals/Knowing Your Limits; Supporting Children’s Goals; Making House Rules/Respecting and Appreciating Family Members; Appropriate Ways of Dealing with Stress; Communicating When You Don’t Agree; Handling Confrontations/Conflict Resolutions; Peer Pressure/Choosing Friends Wisely; Knowing Your Children’s Friends; Protecting Against Substance Abuse — Prevention Strategies; Self-Esteem Building; Acculturation/Diversity: Fostering Cultural Identity and Pride; Gangs and Violence; School and Community Involvement.

Sessions will include parent-youth discussions as well as family activities, refreshments and gifts. Tutoring will also be offered to the families that participate in the program. Day care is also available for younger siblings.

SOCIAL SECURITY PLANNING Linda Naoum, Brenda Gargis and Jandark George met with seniors at the Chaldean Manor on June 27 to discuss the new Medicare Part D: Prescription Program. Also discussed was Social Security options and how they qualify. Some of our older seniors pay people to fill out appropriate papers, when they can learn how to do this for free themselves. Seniors need to know that every Social Security office has an interpreter to help through language barriers.

PROJECT “CAN START” IS UNDERWAY The CALC is pleased to announce its Summer Program, Project CAN START (Chaldean Adolescence for Nonviolence — Striving Together to Achieve Rewarding Tomorrows). This program helps Chaldean children ages 11-15 living in the Detroit area to become more self-confident, communicate better both at home and at school, make good decisions and resolve conflicts, and avoid alcohol and other drugs. As part of the program, Chaldean youth will also work with other children to plan and carry out a community service-learning project.

PROJECT CAN START is free of charge and focuses on the following areas.

1. Understanding the many changes of adolescence 2. Building self-confidence and communication skills 3. Managing emotions in positive ways 4. Improving friendships and resisting negative peer pressure 5. Strengthening family relationships 6. Making healthy choices 7. Setting goals for success and healthy living 8. obituary Yono (Salim) Kassab Yono (Salim) Kassab was born on January 1, 1925 and passed away on June 10, 2005.

He was the most generous, giving, kindhearted man. He liked to joke and tease and enjoyed watching his game shows.

He is survived by his wife, Jamila; his seven children, Jamal, Samira (Zoma), Lelyan (Weiner), Samir, Ahlam, Robert and Ann (Gray) and their families; his sister, Titiya Nanoshi; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kassab will be met in Heaven by his parents, Shammo and Narmi (Butti) Kassab; his brothers, Marogi and Faransis; and his sisters, Habooba (Denha) and Werdani (Poota).

The family would like to thank all those who gave their support during these difficult times. Yono will be greatly missed by many, especially his family.

Spotlight on Iraq’s Plundered Past

I

f anything good has come of wartime pillage in Iraq, it’s a vastly increased appreciation for the nation’s cultural heritage.

That point is made in the new book, The Looting of

the Iraq Museum, Baghdad: The Lost Legacy of Ancient Mesopotamia. And Donny George, director

of the embattled museum, couldn’t agree more.

“Many people did not know about Iraq,” George said, speaking by cellphone from Baghdad. “They only knew that Iraq had a lot of oil, but it has a wonderful history, and not only for Iraqis. It is the history and culture of mankind. Everything started here.”

Written language, philosophy, religion, aesthetics and international trade all have roots in the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, once known as Mesopotamia and now part of modern Iraq, he said. “It’s important for everybody to know that.”

Conceived as an educational tool and a plea for help, the book offers a history of the region and its art, as well as an account of the devastation that occurred in April 2003, when looters ran rampant through the museum in Baghdad.

The collection of essays by 22 scholars, archeologists, conservators and journalists was edited by photojournalist Milbry Polk and Angela M.H. Schuster, an editor of arche-

ology periodicals. Part of the proceeds from book sales will be donated to a fund established by the J. Paul Getty Trust and the World Monuments Fund to help reconstruct the museum and preserve Mesopotamian art.

Essential Facility The museum so violently thrust into the public eye two years ago was founded in 1923 to house artifacts excavated at Assyrian, Babylonian and Sumerian sites.

Originally contained in one room of a government building on the eastern bank of the Tigris, the museum moved across the river in 1966 and doubled the size of its two-story brick building — expanding to about 36,000 square feet — in 1986. The collection encompasses monumental reliefs and statues, ceramic and glass vessels, ivory carvings, textiles, stone cylinder seals, clay cuneiform tablets, jewelry and other objects made of precious metal, including a cache of gold excavated at Nimrud from 1988 to 1990.

Early estimates of losses turned out to be wildly inflated. The Nimrud gold, initially thought to have been stolen, had been locked in vaults of the Central Bank of Iraq during the 1991 Persian Gulf War and remained there during the 2003 looting. Boxes of ancient manuscripts also had been safely stored, in a bomb shelter.

galleries and storerooms of the museum, raising questions about whether it was in part an “inside job.”

The stolen objects included about 5,000 cylinder seals, ancient wood doors, metal and stone statuary, pottery and gold and silver objects. Some large works that couldn’t be removed were seriously damaged by looters, who also wrecked showcases and doors.

“It is very important to have a book such as this, so that this tragedy will not happen in another museum,” said George, who wrote the foreword. “People who work in museums should be aware, and protect their museums by other means than just guards and electronics. When such situations happen, as in Baghdad or in natural disasters — floods, earthquakes, fire — there is no one to stay at the museum to protect it. Everybody just takes off and goes home to their families. There will always be people waiting for that moment. Museums should be built so that they can defend themselves with special doors and showcases that shut down automatically and cannot be easily smashed as they were at our museum.”

continued from page 24 The good news is that about half the loot has been recovered, including an elegantly carved 3-foot alabaster vessel thought to have been made between 3300 BC and 3100 BC. Known as the Warka Vase and considered one of the museum’s most valuable possessions, it sustained considerable damage but has been restored by conservators.

The bad news is that about half the loot is still missing, including many significant pieces.

“One of them is a very important half-natural-size statue of a Sumerian king,” George said. “It’s a headless statue made of diorite.” Created circa 2400 BC and excavated at Ur, the sculpture depicts King Enmetena dressed in a fleece skirt, hands folded on his chest. A cuneiform inscription on his upper right arm states that Enlil, the supreme Sumerian god, loves him.

Thieves apparently love the statue too, if only for its market value. But well-known works such as this are not easy to peddle.

“This is good luck for us and bad luck for the people who got them,” George said. “It would be very hard to sell them anywhere.”

That may not offer much consolation to scholars and others who hope to see all the missing objects returned, but George focuses on the bright side of the ongoing drama.

“I’ll tell you the truth,” he said. “Somehow, in an almost daily action, people — police, customs officers at the airport — are bringing objects to the museum. In some cases, we have Iraqi people finding pieces and buying them with their own money and bringing them back to the museum. This is very important.

“All the material that has been found is not necessarily in Baghdad now,” he added. “We have a good

number of things in Baghdad that were recovered in Iraq. We also have over 2,000 pieces in Jordan, in the department of antiquities, and over 300 pieces in Syria. We have a good number in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. In Italy, there are over 300 pieces; in the United States, there are over 1,000 pieces.

“Most of these objects are documented; many bear Iraq Museum identification numbers. We have pictures of the objects and contacts with authorities in these countries. When the good time comes here, we

will have them back in Baghdad for sure.”

No one can predict when the newly fortified and refurbished museum will open, but work is underway.

“One of our projects is installing surveillance cameras outside the museum and motion detectors inside the galleries,” George said. “We have some special electronic locks for the doors. And it goes on.”

Patriarch Emmanuel III Delly is guiding the flock both in Iraq and the U.S. he Chaldean community was excited to welcome the Chaldean Patriarch of Babylon, Mar Emmanuel III Delly, to the Detroit area last month. His Beatitude sat down with the Chaldean News’ Omar Binno for an interview.

Chaldean News: What are you hoping to accomplish while you are here?

Mar Delly: My visit here is to fulfill the mission of the church as is the mission of all patriarchs: to visit with his flock. With assistance from the bishops, it is my duty as the patriarch to encourage my people, and to strengthen their faith. The purpose of the patriarch is to serve as both father and leader to the church and its members.

CN: There has been some feedback from the community, asking why we are raising money for the Patriarchate and not doing more to raise money for people fleeing Iraq and now becoming refugees.

MD: I did not come here to either raise money for the Patriarchate or raise money for refugees. I came to see my people and to find out about their well-being. It is up to the people to use their money to build the

Patriarchate. I am here to make sure that they are at peace with their faith and their church. As far as refugees, I do not even wish them to leave Iraq. It is their homeland, and I want to do what I can to make sure that they are content there. If this means finding them homes or work, then that is what I will help in doing. However, when they do flee the country, I feel it is my duty as the father of the flock to help them reach where they want to go, to get there in safety, and to make sure that they are happy with where they are at after that.

CN: With violence continuing in Iraq — not against only Christians, but all residents — do Chaldeans have a future in Iraq?

MD: The violence is not specifically targeted at Christians. It doesn’t matter if it’s Christians or Muslims, all Iraqis bare the same peril and the same safety. This is why I don’t like it when somebody asks me “How are the Chaldeans doing in Iraq? What is their state of living with the violence?” The more practical question is, “How are the Iraqis in Iraq, and what is the state of the country’s safety like?” I do not differentiate between Christians or Muslims in this situation.

CN: Do you think that U.S. media reports of events in Iraq are misconstrued and inaccurate to what is really happening there?

MD: The media exaggerates a lot. It only reports on what will benefit its own advertisement, and what is likely to get people’s attention and sell the most.

CN: The Christian Post in a recent article criticized some of your comments regarding the missionaries in Iraq. Why do you think they criticized these comments?

MD: The media wants to put a negative light on what I said regarding the missionaries because this is what people want to read. I did not say that I do not want the missionaries in Iraq, I merely questioned their presence and purpose in the country. We have sent missionaries ourselves in the past to countries like China and India. Are these missionaries here to try and convert us to Christianity? We were Christians long before they were. Our very origins are rooted in Catholicism and Christianity. I welcome the missionaries that come to Iraq, but I question their purpose there. Are they there to try and convert the Muslims? If so, more power to them. If they can do it, let them go for it. It appears though that they are not targeting the Muslims, but rather the Christians within the country.

CN: What can you tell us about the new government in place in Iraq? Are you hopeful that positive change will occur with this government, and do we as Chaldean/Christians have a voice?

MD: The Christians will have a voice in the new government. Furthermore, they have equal rights under the new laws, and under Natural Law. Although it is a Muslim-dominated government, I am hoping that this will not intrude

CN: How can Chaldeans who live in the United States help Chaldeans in Iraq?

MD: First and foremost, we need to proclaim and solicit our heritage as Chaldeans. We need to continue the teaching of our language to the new generations so they do not forget it or their culture. They should always seek to stay united, and of course, continue to help in any way they can through financial support.

CN: With everything going on in Iraq and the United States, will the Chaldean language be kept alive and will the culture survive?

MD: We have to learn to live in both cultures, the American and our native Chaldean. It is good to conform to the laws, customs and traditions of this country, but we need to keep our own alive as well. Again, we can do this by continuing to teach the next generation about their heritage and also teach them the language as well. We must never lose the language or the heritage. If we do not maintain our heritage by teaching the new generation, in 20 years the Chaldean identity will disintegrate. Your generation is the link that can keep our culture alive for the generations to come.

CN: What is your reaction to the election of the new Pope?

MD: I think he is a very nice person, and will do well for the church all over the world.

Iraq is a beautiful country. I explained to him that Iraq is in a sorrowful and “sick” state of being, and prayer from himself and the church is its medicine.

CN: So you are happy with his election?

MD: Yes. I am very happy.

CN: You traveled to Rome for the coronation of Pope Benedict XVI. Did you get to speak with him, and if so, what did he say to you?

MD: The first day we got there, the day of the coronation, the new Pope pulled me and five other patriarchs from the different churches aside to speak with us privately. When he asked me where I was from, and I told him Iraq, he said that

CN: Is the Chaldean church going to work with the new Pope to appoint a cardinal for us?

MD: It is really up to the Patriarch of each individual church to appoint a cardinal. The Pope is head of the Church of Rome, and the Patriarch of the Chaldean Church, for example, is head of the Chaldean Rite. Hence, in a sense, the Patriarch is equal to the Pope in administration. The Pope, of course, has a much greater following, because the Latin church is the largest of the Catholic Rites.

CN: You recently met with the president of France and frequently meet with the heads of states. What is discussed in your meetings, and do you use these opportunities to address the rights of Christians in Iraq and the Middle East?

MD: When I met with the different leaders, I implored them to treat their Chaldean citizens as if they are their own children, and to ensure that they have the same rights as those living in their country who are not of Chaldean origin. I asked this of different countries, such as Turkey, Jordan, France, Germany, Denmark and Holland.

CN: But do they know who we are as Chaldeans?

MD: If they did not know who we are, they would not have welcomed me as the Patriarch of the Chaldean Church the way they did.

CN: Is there anything you would like to say in closing?

MD: Please know that it is my fervent hope that our people keep alive their heritage, their language and their faith in our Church.

Chaldeans weigh in on the current climate in Detroit

he Detroit mayoral race is on and three major candidates, plus a distant fourth, are pulling out all the stops to become Detroit’s next leader. As Kwame Kilpatrick, Freman Hendrix and Sharon McPhail continue on the campaign trail, and Hansen Clarke tries to gain ground after a late entry, Chaldeans are watching with a keen eye.

Najib Atisha has been doing business in Detroit for more than 30 years — during the reign of three mayors, dozens of city council members and, along the way, miles of red tape. Despite the ups of downs of running businesses in a major metropolitan city, Atisha, a board member on the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce, doesn’t remember treading through a stormy climate like today’s.

“I don’t know who the next mayor is going to be. I do know that person needs to wrap his or her arms around the whole city,” said Atisha from his Indian Village Market on Jefferson.

“That person cannot continue this environment of blacks versus whites or blacks versus Chaldeans. We need to unite.”

He and his business partner have been trying to develop the property, which has been vacant since 1981. Here’s a look at the candidates, presented in alphabetical order. The mayor serves a four-year term, and all candidates are Democrats.

STATE SENATOR HANSEN CLARKE A three-term state representative, Clarke was term-limited but elected to the Senate in 2002 by defeating incumbent State Senator Ray Murphy. He represents District 1, which is entirely within Detroit and includes downtown and his childhood neighborhood on the city’s east side. Clarke sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“The Chaldean community has been loyal to Detroit for many years, and I fully appreciate their loyalty,” Clarke said. “And as citizens who choose to the live and work in the city, they will be a part of Detroit’s growth and prosperity for many years to come. It is my goal to bring together all of Detroit’s communities — ethnic, racial, cultural — and to partner with them in providing Detroit’s families with clean streets, safe neighborhoods, job training, and lower homeowners and automobile insurance rates.”

Clarke, 48, earned a bachelor’s of fine arts degree from Cornell University, which he attended on an artistic scholarship, and a law degree from Georgetown.

FREMAN HENDRIX Chief of staff and deputy mayor under former Mayor Dennis Archer, Hendrix is making his first run for elected office. Before joining the Archer Administration, he was Wayne County Director of Community Development and then Assistant County Executive for Legislative Affairs. In 1996, Hendrix chaired the Clinton/Gore re-election effort in Michigan and became the state’s first African-American to lead a successful presidential campaign.

“I’m going to work with the Chaldean community like I work with every other community,” Hendrix said. “The tide lifts all boats. If I fix crime in the community, I fix it for everybody; if I fix the schools in the community, I fix them for everybody. Hendrix, 54, is popularly known by his middle name, Freman. A Navy veteran, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Eastern Michigan University. He and wife Elaine have two grown children. Hendrix has spent the last three years working in the private sector.

MAYOR KWAME KILPATRICK Elected at age 31, Kilpatrick became the youngest mayor in the history of Detroit.

He was in the midst of his third two-year term as a state representative when he was elected mayor in 2001. When Kilpatrick became the House Minority Leader, he was the first African-American in state history to lead a political party in the legislature.

Kilpatick’s office did not respond to the Chaldean News’ questions.

Kilpatrick’s administration is tainted with a series of scandals. There are allegations of wild parties at the mayor’s residence, the Manoogian Mansion, and in 2004 it was revealed that Washington, D.C. police stopped providing Kilpatrick with an escort when he was in town due to his large entourage club-hopping into the early morning hours.

This year, the media uncovered the Detroit Police Department’s lease of a Lincoln Navigator SUV, allegedly for wife Carlita’s private use. Also, it was revealed that Kilpatrick charged nearly $200,000 on his city-issued credit card.

Kilpatrick earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and teaching certificate from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee — where he also played football — and a law degree from the Detroit College of Law. He 32 CHALDEAN NEWS

taught for a short time in a Detroit middle school before entering politics.

Kilpatrick, 35, and Carlita have three boys. He is the son of U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-Detroit).

In April, Time magazine rated Kilpatrick as one of the worst mayors in the nation.

COUNCILWOMAN SHARON MCPHAIL In the midst of her first four-year term on Detroit City Council, McPhail first ran for mayor in 1993. The first woman to ever win a Detroit mayoral primary, McPhail lost the mayoral election to Dennis Archer.

McPhail has announced that if elected, former Detroit police chief Benny Napoleon will be her deputy mayor. (While they’re campaigning as a team, Napoleon’s name won’t be on the ballot. Deputy mayor is an appointed position.)

McPhail was a Wayne County prosecuting attorney for eight years, serving as Chief of Screening and District Courts. She was also an assistant U.S. attorney, corporate counsel for Ford Motor Co., and an arbitrator and mediator for Wayne and Oakland counties.

“I have extensive contact with the Chaldean community already, and what we’ll do is make sure they’ll have a presence in our ‘community council’ where groups will have a say in how resources are spent,” McPhail said.

“My intention is to make sure the Chaldean community has a seat at the table.”

McPhail said creating a community council is part of her population retention and repopulation plan for Detroit.

McPhail, 57, was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and moved to Michigan in the 1970s. She has a law degree from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston. She and her husband David have two grown daughters.

Archer visited the church before the election and throughout his eight years in office. Rev. Yasso said Archer also continued an open dialogue with Chaldeans. “He often sent officers to our holiday services and special occasions,” said Rev. Yasso.

“He also assigned me as a member the Human Rights Commission in Detroit and as the chaplain of 11 precincts.”

Today, Rev. Yasso has yet to hear from the Kilpatrick Administration. “We have called his office many times and we have yet to get a call back,” he said. “He visited us during his last election; he made promises to us that we would have a good relationship. And he knew my relationship with the previous administration. I still haven’t heard from them.”

Rev. Yasso said crime has escalated around the church. Recently, a volunteer at Sacred Heart was mugged outside the church on a Sunday afternoon.

Rev. Yasso was grateful that police quickly responded. “However, neighborhoods kids constantly bother our Chaldean children attending catechism,” he said. “I had to put vending machines in the church so kids didn’t go home for a snack break during class because they were often harassed by other kids in the neighborhood. We have complained to the mayor’s office but nothing has happened.”

Chaldean families are fleeing the city at a rapid rate. What was once the largest Chaldean parish in Michigan now suffers with a lack of new members joining the church. Without newcomers emigrating from Iraq, Rev. Yasso fears that the church will not be able to sustain itself. “People want security,” said Rev. Yasso. “They don’t feel safe here.”

As we approach the primary in the Detroit mayor’s race, Chaldeans continue to weigh in on the outcome and the future of the city. “I think people want change,” said Sarafa. “In respect to who they want to win the race, many people fall in the ABK [Anybody But Kwame] camp. He blew a golden opportunity. He came into office with high hopes and lots of goodwill. I think many people view Freman Hendrix very positively.”

If Kilpatrick wins reelection, what does Sarafa think Chaldean business owners will do? “People have learned how to survive. Chaldeans are expert survivors,” Sarafa said. “Hopefully, if the mayor wins, he will be a more focused, magnanimous, mature mayor.”

God’s plan A Chaldean is newly ordained

H

e is now known as Father Anthony — the 31-year-old son of Karim and Faiza Saroki and brother to Stephanie, Karen and Elizabeth.

Although ordained in the Latin rite, Rev. Anthony Saroki is a bi-ritual priest with the canonical right to celebrate the Chaldean Mass.

Fr. Anthony recently celebrated his first Chaldean Mass in Michigan at St. Thomas Chaldean Catholic Church in West Bloomfield. When he returns back to California, he will be assistant campus minister at San Diego State University and will also assist at a parish near the university called Blessed Sacrament.

It was God’s plan, said Fr. Anthony as he explained why he chose the priesthood. The call to the priesthood came years earlier but Fr. Anthony made the realization during his first year in law school in 1997, he said.

He is also embarking on this new life in the faith while Catholic schools and churches close and controversy surrounds the church. Fr. Anthony explained that he not out to accomplish anything great other than following God’s plan.

“It’s not about what I will accomplish, but what Christ will accomplish in and through me if I allow Him free reign in my life,” he said. “I want to help all Catholics appreciate and live the universal call to holiness; that is, by virtue of our baptism, we are all called to be saints. The crises in the Church and the world today are due to a lack of saints.”

Fr. Anthony said he was not only inspired by his parents and siblings to live a good life in Christ, but by a few priests he knew in college and law school who made a positive impact because of their faithfulness to God and His church and their obvious desire that all souls they encounter be closer to God. “John Paul II is one of my biggest inspirations because he tirelessly spoke the truth even when it was unpopular,” Fr. lighting the way One woman works to make positive change in Iraq

S

he is an Iraqi woman hoping for progress.

Pascal Isho Ward is traveling around the world educating people about ChaldeanAssyrians and learning what they are doing in their own hometowns.

The Detroit chapter of the Assyrian Democratic Movement (Zowaa) organized several meetings with Ward during her recent second visit to Michigan.

“I wanted to come see the progress ChaldeanAssyrians have made in the United States,” said the 40-year-old married woman with two children. “I will take what I have discovered and learned about the ChaldeanAssyrians in Michigan and California back to Baghdad.”

Ward said there has been real progress made in Iraq, although security issues and serious explosions are part of everyday life there. She said the media in the U.S are not telling the complete story. “The psychology of people in Iraq is changing. People

were once paid a few dollars a month and controlled by a dictator. Today, they are part of a democracy making much more money — making hundreds of dollars,” she said. “We have problems in Iraq, but we also have progress in the country. We have changed the level of life. The biggest problem we have is security issues but the economy has gotten better and so have our schools.”

Once part of the Interim Government Council, Ward is currently working in collaboration Pascal Isho Ward with the Prime Minister as a consultant. She is also president of the Assyrian Women Union. She has set up a center in Iraq to give women the tools and skills they need to hold down jobs and to educate women on how a democratic government works. “Democracy in Iraq will not happen overnight,” she said one evening over dinner at Shenandoah Country Club in West

Bloomfield. “It will take time. We need the tools and the knowledge to handle a democracy.”

The Iraqi people understand that creating a democracy is not a magic act, said Ward. The Iraqi people know that the current Iraqi government is striving for democracy with allies like the United States, she said, and that it takes strategic planning.

“There are many ChaldeanAssyrians displaced all over the country,” said Ward. “They want to go back to Iraq to their villages but fear security issues. That is something I discuss with elected officials here the United States.”

In 1981, Ward felt she was being pulled into the Ba’ath Party, which she adamantly rejected. She lived in northern Iraq at the time and fled to France where she lived for 15 years. Believing she needed to learn how to fight against the Ba’ath Party, she learned French in order to study philosophy and theology.

“I believe everyone needs to give back,” said Ward. “We all have talents, skills and ideas that could help others. The solidarity of our people is important. Why not help people in our homeland?

Get Your Kids Reading This Summer! BRENDA ACHO GAPPY BY

ummer is here and it is time to relax. Young children will spend many hours at the swim club, the beach and riding bikes. It is important, however, that they spend some time reading and writing also.

Kindergarten is no longer just learning how to get along and playing nicely, although these are still very necessary skills. Kindergartners today are expected to have many of the skills that were expected of first graders just a few years ago. Today children leaving kindergarten are expected to read simple patterned books, spell words using letter sounds and create simple sentences.

Before entering first grade, children attending Michigan schools should be able to do the following:

S THE WRIGHT STUFF Many times parents focus only on the reading part of literacy, but writing has a significant role also.

Reading and writing should go hand in hand. It is essential that parents always model writing (as well reading) in front of their children.

Before your child can write he/she needs to have an understanding that letters have sounds.

Once the letter sounds are mastered, your child can attempt to write. At first your child’s spelling will be phonetic. Your child will write down only the sound he/she hears. This is called “invented spelling.” These are the misspellings children make before they know the rules (and exceptions to the rules) that adults use when spelling.

Learning to write and spell is a process and does not happen overnight. Using “invented spelling” is a natural stage that all good writers must go through. Here are a few writing activities that parents can do at home with their young children.

• After reading a story, have your child draw a picture of his/her favorite part or favorite character.

At first let your child draw the illustration and the parent should take dictation (write down exactly what they say) of your child’s response. Model writing! Eventually your child will be able to write his/her own response to the story.

• Have your child draw and/or write a different ending to the story.

• Write stories patterned off of favorite books.

• Allow young children to write with a variety of materials, such as crayons, marker, pencils, pens, chalk, paint or with their finger in shaving cream on a flat surface.

• Encourage your child to write thank you notes after receiving gifts. They may begin with scribbles and pictures, but will later include words and sentences.

• Write an experience story after going on a trip or doing something special like going to the zoo or wave pool. Let your child think about what happened and then draw/write down their ideas. Have your child tell/read it back to you.

• Have your child keep a summer journal.

He/she can draw/write down all the cool and fun things he/she experienced over the summer. (For young children, parents will take down dictation and model writing.) Your child will have memory book that can be saved and treasured forever.

• Write notes to your child and ask them to write you back.

• Ask your child to help make grocery lists, party guest list and favorite animal list. The possibilities are endless.

• create and write a sentence and draw an appropriate picture Pre-school is an important part of this equation.

Children who do not attend pre-school may have difficulty in kindergarten. Children who have attended pre-school already have an understanding of “schoolness” and the function of school in their lives. They already understand the role of the teacher, as well as their role as the learner. They have been introduced to letters, numbers and shapes, as well as the social aspect of school. Pre-school is vital to the kindergarten experience.

Parents are their children’s first teachers. Children who have been read to every day have greater success in school. While reading to young children it is important to talk about the “concepts of print.” These may seem obvious to adults, but these are concepts that must be taught: • • • • • • • • •

Books have a front and back cover.

Books have authors and illustrators.

Books have titles and a title page.

Books have a spine on the left and they open from the right side.

Books have page numbers.

Books have words (help to distinguish between a letter and a word).

Print, as well as pictures, tell the story.

Print is read from left to right, top to bottom and has a return sweep.

Print is read on the left page before the right page.

• Print can be read by sounding out the letters.

• Stories have characters, settings, problems and solutions.

• Stories have a beginning, middle and an end.

• Stories can be make believe or real (fiction or nonfiction).

• Stories are fun to read!

Children develop literacy through an integration of reading, writing, listening and speaking. There are a number of activities that parents can do with their young children to help promote literacy.

• Read aloud to your child on a regular basis. Use expression while reading a story and read each character with a different voice.

• Allow your child to choose books he/she is interested in. Parents can borrow books from the library and/or begin to build a personal collection of children’s books at home. Participate in the Summer Reading Program at the library.

• At first choose simple patterned books. After your child has heard the story several times, allow your child to “read” the book along with you.

• Read a variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction (informational text).

• Read nursery rhymes and finger plays to young children.

• Encourage your child to sing the “Alphabet” song.

Sing in the car, in the shower or when waiting in line.

• Play alphabet games, for example matching the upper-case letters with the lower-case letters, playing memory with the letters or matching the lower-case letter to the sound it makes. There are a number of alphabet books, videos, DVDs and toys available. They make great gifts!

• Encourage your child to look at the illustrations of the text. Discuss how the pictures give clues to better understand the story.

• Ask comprehension questions while reading to be sure your child really understands what is being read: • What do you think this story will be about? (Ask before reading the book.)

• What do you think will happen next?

• What does this story remind you of (prior knowledge)?

• What questions did you have while listening to this story? (Was anything confusing?)

• What was the problem and solution in this story?

• What was the moral (life lesson or message) of this story?

• Why do you think this character made that decision or behaved that way?

• After listening to this story, what were you wondering?

• If you were going to retell this story to a friend, what important ideas would you include? (Beginning, Middle and Ending) If parents want their children to be successful readers and writers, they must model reading and writing at home. They must see the value of literacy. They must see the pleasure and satisfaction their own parents have in engaging in these activities. They will want to imitate you because they will know it is important.

Parents must share, with the school, the responsibility of educating their children. Take time each day for your child, to read, to talk, to listen!

About 800 people attended a June 6 fundraising dinner at Shenandoah Country Club. Event Coordinator Lawrence Yaldo, along with a steering committee, decorated the hall in deep-red tablecloths, fig tree centerpieces and a red carpet that ran from the foyer door to the head table where the Patriarch sat with other religious leaders including Bishop Ibrahim and Bishop (Mar) Sarhad Jammo of California. All proceeds of the $500-acouple ticket will help build the patriarchate residence and offices in Baghdad.
