STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT CHALDEANS Sixth-graders at Flynn Middle School in Sterling Heights recently learned about Chaldean culture from Rosemary Antone and World War II Veteran Don Cassa.

Antone spoke about Chaldeans’ contributions to the United States. Cassa told the students about his experiences immigrating in the United States and fighting in World War II. The students were so receptive to his comments that many skipped lunch to hear more.

Flynn Middle School, part of the Warren district, has some 380 Chaldean students among its total population of about 590. Many have been in the United States less than three years. The program was designed to give the students a greater appreciation for Veterans Day.

C.A.R.E. MERGES WITH CHALDEAN COMMUNITY CULTURAL CENTER Members of Chaldean Americans Reaching and Encouraging (C.A.R.E.) have voted to merge with the Chaldean Community Cultural Center (CCCC).

“Rather than competing with the CCCC, we thought it best to work together to meet the needs of the community,” said C.A.R.E. President Bashar Hannosh. “We are proud of the accomplishments of C.A.R.E. over the last seven years. I think we will all agree that the work of our volunteers has made a significant impact on the people of Michigan.”

Veteran Don Cassa is surrounded by interested students from Flynn Middle School.

Rosemary Antone, chair of the CCCC board of directors, said the addition of C.A.R.E. is welcome.

“We love the group and know they do a lot of good things,” she said.

“This is a welcome asset to the cultural center.”

ACHO RECORDS CHRISTMAS SONG Chaldean Steve Acho has joined forced with Karen Newman to create and release “Christmas Without You,” an original duet dedicated to all the U.S. troops and their families at home and abroad.

Acho, a singer, songwriter and pianist, is based in Detroit. Newman is known as “the voice of the Red Wings” for her performance of the National Anthem at each home game.

The two are donating a portion of proceeds from sales of the CD single to the Army Emergency Relief Organization, which helps soldiers and their dependents.

IRAQIS LIVING ABROAD CAN VOTE IN ELECTION

Three new films with connections to the Chaldean community were shown in Metro Detroit in November.

Voices of Iraq, shown at the Birmingham Theater, offers the opportunity to hear the diverse perspective of Iraqis on issues at the forefront of a global debate over war, terror and the prospects for democratic reform — directly from the street.

The producers distributed more than 150 digital video cameras across the country to enable everyday people — mothers, children, teachers, sheiks and even insurgents — to document their lives and their hopes amidst the upheaval of a nation being born. Also aired at the Birmingham Theater was About Baghdad, a film by Sinan Antoon, an Iraqi writer and poet who was exiled under Saddam Hussein. He returned to Baghdad in the summer of 2003 to talk and film people in the city about their experiences and views on the war. Learn more at www.aboutbaghdad.com.

Finally, The Cost of Happiness had a premiere on November 21 at Madison High School in Madison Heights. The dramatic film tells the story of a young Assyrian man struggling to find happiness in his life. Written and directed by Martin Dahr Jamail posts Khoshaba, the entire film is in Aramaic. Iraqis who live outside the country will be allowed to vote in the January national election, the Iraqi election commission announced on November 4.

Iraqis will go to the polls on January 30 to choose a national assembly, which among other things will draft a permanent constitution. The vote is seen as a major step toward building democracy after years of war and dictatorship.

The government plans to establish voting centers in countries with large Iraqi populations. But details of how many centers, where they would be located and which countries would be involved have not been given.

Iraqi authorities began updating the voters rolls in November and campaigning for the election is expected to begin in mid-December.

BARNABAS FUND ISSUES URGENT APPEAL FOR IRAQ’S CHRISTIANS (AINA) — The Barnabas Fund, an organization that assists persecuted Christian minorities by prayer and practical support, has issued an urgent appeal (http://www.barnabasfund.org/News/Archive/Iraq/Iraq20041103.htm) on behalf of the Christians of Iraq.

The Christian community in northern Iraq is facing ever mounting intimidation and violence. Photographs of three senior bishops in Mosul are being circulated around, the Barnabas Fund says, with the message

that they are agents of the United States, infidels, and action must be taken against them. The church leaders serving the Christian community of Karakush, Mosul, have received two letters from the Islamic militants. The first ordered them to allow Christian women to marry Muslim men (which in Muslim eyes means the women effectively convert to Islam). This, said the letter, would enable the women to be “blessed” and “purified” by their marriages.

The second letter to church leaders, received November 2, announced the militants’ intention of killing one person in every Christian family, as a punishment for the women not covering their heads and not going to university. This follows up pressure and threats from Islamic extremists against all women in Mosul, requiring them to cover their head with the hijab (Islamic headscarf). A Christian woman was killed around October 26 for having her head uncovered. Two other Christian women who were seen bareheaded in a market had nitric acid squirted in their faces, according to the Barnabas Fund. Specific threats about the clothing of female students at Mosul University have so frightened the Christians that an estimated 1,500 Christian women have stopped attending their classes.

Furthermore, the group says, leaflets are being distributed with the message “Christians go; leave Iraq.” Word is being passed around in the mosques, telling Muslims not to buy anything from Christians. Not only are they infidels, it is said, but also they will soon be leaving, so the Muslims will be able to take their homes and property for free.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Dr. Paul Shekwana, probably one of the United States’ earliest Chaldeans, arrived at Ellis Island, New York on May 8, 1904.

He was 29 years old and lived in London.

His ethnicity is listed as “Assyria/Syrian” on the official passenger record.

Dr. Shekwana was a well-known bacteriologist in England and came to the U.S. to work in Iowa. His job was to investigate the possible causes of typhoid, which was rampant at the time, for an annual salary of $1,000.

He died on July 9, 1906, in Iowa City of injuries received from leaping off a railroad trestle to avoid an oncoming train.

Arabic satellite television stations broadcast election coverage most of the day as Iraqis sharply debated the merits of another four years of the Bush Administration’s policies in their country.

Naseer Kamel al-Chaderchi, a member of the advisory national council and a former member of the now-disbanded Iraqi Governing Council, said it was better for Iraq that Bush remained in office so he could see through what he started here. ``For the Iraqi situation, it’s better that Bush was re-elected,’’ he said but added the caveat that ``Bush needs to implement the other programs that he came here for, to make Iraq a free country, stable, democratic and pluralistic. [The Americans] are responsible for us.’’

But others pointed to a rapidly deteriorating security situation in the country as a sign that Bush has failed in his plans to establish a new democracy after ousting dictator Saddam Hussein. They are also critical of what they saw as mistakes that Bush made from the beginning, which laid the foundation for the unrest to follow.

Plenty of Iraqis have voiced admiration of Bush for having finished off Saddam, however, saying his strong decisive action showed that he has the resolve to get things done. ``Bush’s election is important because he

Following are excerpts from the interview.

What are your impressions of the meeting?

I am very satisfied and he, too, was very happy.

Let us hope that it will bear the desired fruit. As the Holy Father said this week, we are working for peace by our actions and our prayers. We know that the Pope never stops thinking about Iraq.

Who initiated the meeting?

We asked if we could meet him and al-Sistani readily said yes. He welcomed us very warmly and received us for an hour. At the end, he could not hide his satisfaction about the meeting.

What did you discuss?

Both of us want to find ways to bring peace and tranquility to the country.

We both know that the country is sick but want to find the medicines to treat it. We spoke as two brothers who love each other would.

How do you see the future?

All we can do is pray that the Lord shows us the path to peace. We must also further encourage those who are working hard to establish security and stability in the country.

ASSESSING THE ELDERLY The Chaldean American Ladies of Charity (CALC), with assistance from Area Agency on Aging 1-B (AAA 1-B), is assessing the needs of Chaldean elders and seniors.

The CALC and AAA 1-B will conduct an assessment of needs for Chaldean seniors in the tri-county area.

The Senior Needs Assessment represents an effort to better understand the needs of Chaldeans age 50+ living in Michigan. The study has the following objectives: • Develop an in-depth understanding of the actual nature of the needs identified by Chaldean elders/seniors; • Prioritize the various needs seniors face • Probe seniors’ awareness of current service providers and their evaluation of the effectiveness of those service providers • Connect older Chaldeans to providers that meet their needs • Assist older Chaldeans to have a greater sense of community with their own culture, as well as the culture in the U.S. A survey/questionnaire will be administered to members of the community to ascertain their exist-

ing situation and their needs. The resulting survey findings will assist the CALC and the AAA 1-B in making educated decisions about how to best serve the needs of the elderly and the seniors in the Chaldean community. ASSISTING THOSE IN NEED Clothing Drive: This past month CALC held their annual clothing drive. Twice a year, CALC holds clothing drives, one in Detroit and one in Oak Park. In October, the women collected hundreds of bags of clothes for needy families in Detroit. CALC collects all types of items including dresses, suits, evening wear, shoes, purses, pants, shirts and toys for all ages. Often the ladies have to replenish their stock because they run out of items during a drive. CALC only takes clothes and other items in “good” condition. They do not accept clothes that are torn or stained.

Clothes were given to Detroit-area needy families on October 21 and 22 in Detroit.

CALC decided to assist this charitable endeavor by paying for the shipment cost of sending the shoes to Iraq. Fr. Moufid, director of the Chaldean orphanages in Iraq, will distribute the shoes.

In addition, CALC thanks several CALC members who volunteered their time to decorate the senior home with Christmas holiday decorations.

It was a cold and rainy day when a tragedy destroyed the lives of many family and friends of Salwan Kassab when he died suddenly on November 17, 2004 at his home in West Bloomfield. He was 35 years old.

Mr. Kassab was born February 22, 1969 in Baghdad, Iraq, and came to the United States as a young child. A graduate of Pershing High School in Detroit, he was a successful, self-made entrepreneur. He was a real estate developer and also owned liquor and grocery stores. He got married on September 11, 2003 to a beautiful lady that captured his heart. He loved sports, was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a philanthropist who supported many Christian causes.

Mr. Kassab is survived by his wife, Heaba; his mother, Batool; his brothers, Ghassan, his wife Ghidaa, Ghazwan, Nash and Calvin; his sister, Gina and her husband Maher; and his nephews and nieces, Giavan, Gino, Genaveive, Gevino, Gavel Kassab, Donovan, Artavian, Valencia and Faustina Khamoro. He was predeceased by his father, Ablahad.

Many people from the Chaldean community called The Chaldean News expressing their sadness over this death and shared with us what he meant to them.

Mr. Kassab was not an ordinary man. He was an idol to many people. A man that would do the impossible for those he loved.

He was a leader; many people looked up to him and respected him. He was like a brother to people who were not his relatives.

He will be terribly missed. And will be in the hearts of those he touched.

Majdoline Misho Naimi Majdoline (Misho) Naimi was born on November 24, 1924 in Iraq. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1973 with her children and husband Sadiq, who died that same year. She was a very active member of Mother of God’s women’s group and traveled extensively all over the world. She passed away in a car accident on November 5, 2004, about three weeks shy of her 80th birthday.

Mrs. Naimi is survived by her seven children, Adnan, Awatif (Misho), Amir, Emad, Essam, Alaa and Atour (Abro) and their families; and her brothers, Ghazi, Fawzi and Ramzy and their families.

She is the mother of the late Afif Naimi and sister to the late Bahjat, Ghanim and Virgen (Misho). May she rest in peace.

hen Sonia Hanaish’s sister asked her to spend Christmas in Florida a couple of years ago she agreed, but only on one condition — she wanted traditional pacha (stuffed tripe) on Christmas morning.

“Christmas is not Christmas without pacha in a Chaldean family,” said Hanaish. “My mom packed up the ingredients she needed and flew to Florida and I had pacha that Christmas morning.”

Many Chaldean Christmas traditions have traveled thousand of miles and have been carried on from generation to generation right here in the United States.

Mavita Yousif Bachouka, 7, is celebrating her sixth Christmas in the U.S. Although she was too young to remember how her family celebrated in Iraq, her parents remind her of the traditions every year as they incorporate American customs with Chaldean ones into their holiday celebrations.

“My favorite part of Christmas is getting gifts,” said Mavita, adding that she is asking Santa Claus — an American symbol — for dolls and clothes this year.

However, when asked the meaning of Christmas, the second-grader reverts to her native tongue, Aramaic, and talks about the birth of Christ and the nativity.

Families embrace the challenges of a child with special needs BY

future. In his free time he participates in the Special Olympics, through which individuals with disabilities partake in an array of physical activities and sports. In fact, Maroki helps coach the track and field team and basketball players. This way, Fadi’s activities often become an opportunity for his family and friends to also participate and have fun.

in the community independently. Some children, however, require extra individual care.

While this may seem a misfortune to those far from such experiences, Judy Jonna finds acceptance and optimism in her involvement with an organization known as Angel’s Place.

At the age of 4, Jonna’s son Jeffrey was seriously injured in a garage door accident that caused permanent brain damage and rendered

t is a part of life that humans face challenges. Some of the most difficult trials can be those we face in caring for our loved ones. Batool Maroki and Judy Jonna have turned to God to find answers and strength as they raise children with special needs.

There was a time when the disabled were shunned and mistreated by society. Today, however, many services and organizations are devoted to caring for special needs individuals, even specifically within the Chaldean community. Batool Maroki is a testament to that.

This mother of five children is a very busy woman. In addition to the common demands of raising a family, her youngest son, Fadi, was born with Down syndrome, a disorder that includes a combination of birth defects, including mental retardation. Rather than treat this as an obstacle, Maroki uses every day as an opportunity to improve the life of her son as well as others with special needs.

Maroki has been an advocate of disabled children since her son was very young. Before her family immigrated to America from Iraq, she helped teach Catechism to disabled children, including her son, enabling many to receive their First Communion. She recalls how difficult it was for parents who did not want their children segregated because of their special needs.

“There was a lot of suffering, and it was not easy for parents back home,” she said. “But it is God’s will for them to have these differences.

They have their rights too, and we have to be the ones to fight for them.”

Last year, Fadi graduated with honors from Central High School. Today, the 19-year-old attends a community school where he learns many skills that can help him find a job in the

to his active involvement within the church and community. “Every first and third Saturday of the month we attend Catechism and activities at St. Thomas Church in West Bloomfield,” she explained. “Through the support of Father Frank Kalabat, I help teach students like Fadi along with other volunteers. They enjoy music, lessons and games. Every day, Fadi and I are involved with something, and he is so happy.

He is social and has many friends at church, school and wherever he goes.”

adults with disabilities in a religious environment. After watching a video on the organization and visiting the homes, Jonna found what she had been searching for — hope for her child.

Angel’s Place is a living community for older people with disabilities who no longer have their family to care for them. Jonna remembers crying from utter happiness in knowing her son would be taken care of in the event she would not be able to.

“This was the answer to my prayers. The homes were clean and residents looked happy,” she recalled. “When you have a child with severe brain damage who cannot respond, you learn that you have to trust when your child is in the care of others. And that is difficult to find because you know that your child cannot tell you when something is wrong or if he is being mistreated.”

Jonna has worked on the Angel’s Place board for four years.

She has also acted as a home monitor where she and other members inspect Angel’s Place homes unannounced to make sure they maintain acceptable standards of cleanliness and care. Angel’s Place

Team White, led by first-year captain Joey Jonna, captured the 2004 Chy Cup crown in convincing fashion by defeating Roy Sitto’s Team Black 40-21 on November 14.

“Hoisting that cup over my head for the first time as a coach was better than I ever imagined,” Jonna said with elation. “My team had faith in me all year long and I believed in them. Looking around and seeing the

game was White rookie wide receiver Anthony Hesano, who used every bit of his 6-3 frame to haul in four TD passes and a number of big catches throughout the contest.

A notable performance was also turned in by Joey Kejbou, who was the recipient of two first-half TD passes from Jonna, who threw for six TDs in all. Ray Dawood turned in a stellar performance for Black with a pair of TDs and a number of nifty moves throughout the contest.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to win it as a rookie coach,” Jonna said.

“I was pretty nervous at the beginning of the year. But the experience of Saber Ammori and Dennis Sarafa made my job a lot easier.”

White is a team that was originally criticized for being too young and too light. Jonna’s draft techniques were also questioned, especially when he took a gamble on Hesano in the second round. Jonna also didn’t hesitate to take a chance on rookies Johnathon Sesi and Patrick Hesano, who became major impact players throughout the season.

“This team had a winning mentality all year long,” Jonna said.

“Every time we stepped on the field, we truly believed we were going to win the game.”

Jonna also made some astute decisions on two trades during the season — early in the year trading John Hermiz to Purple for veteran Saber Ammori, and following that up with a move that made White the fastest team in the league — trading JR Kizy to Red for Nolan Karrumi.

“The best thing about this championship for me personally was the team I drafted,” Jonna said. “I drafted guys I knew would be good team players, and the plan worked perfectly. I had a close personal relationship with most of the team before the season, and now I’m close with all of them.”

redit debts have risen among all segments of the public throughout the country. Whether it is a college student paying tuition, a family acquiring a new house or people just wanting to make luxury purchases, credit loans and debts have soared over the last five years to a record high.

According to Federal Reserve data, the U.S. debt exceeds 35 tril-

lion dollars. The average family living in its own home has a credit debt of $450,000 including mortgage and car payments. The level of college graduate debts is at an all-time high due to cuts in federal grants.

Wendy Acho, vice president of commercial banking at Standard Federal Bank’s Troy headquarters, asserts that people end up paying off debts with credit cards, which only creates more debt for the individual.

“It becomes a vicious cycle,” Acho said. “People use credit to finance businesses or other purchases, and when they get in over their heads, they borrow more money to pay off the first debt.”

Beware of Credit According to Makram Talia, a certified financial planner and wealth management advisor with

Merrill Lynch, a major problem with people using credit cards is that often times, they fall into the trap of spending far more than they make.

“People with credit debts usually don’t budget themselves annually,” Talia said. “You should take care of the fixed costs, such as mortgage payments, car payments and food bills first. Then you should calculate how much you can spend toward discretionary costs like going out to eat or to the movies, or buying new clothes.”

All too often, various banks lure customers who are already in debt with offers of “better” credit cards with lower interest rates.

Use Discipline The first remedy to debts, of course, is to try avoiding entanglement in them. So obviously, as with any other problem, prevention is better than solution. Weighing your budget is clearly an important factor in preventing major credit debts.

Talia offers some advice for disciplining yourself. “First, reduce the number of credit cards you have and use,” he said. “That way, your debt

stays in one place. Secondly, don’t take your credit card with you when you go shopping. This will force you to use cash which you already have, instead of relying on your credit card to buy that TV you want.”

Don’t Hide Another key thing to keep in mind, according to Acho, is that the creditor is out there to help the borrower.

“By avoiding the creditors, you do nothing short of creating your own demise,” she said. “Being

proactive with creditors will ensure a successful end, professionally and personally. Many times, creditors can stop interest, or arrange it where you have only interest payments.”

Acho strongly emphasizes the importance of thorough communication between the borrower and lender. “It’s a misconception that anyone who provides access to capital wants to own your home or business or collateral,” she said.

“That’s not how we make our money. The bottom line is that at the end of the day, creditors do not want to see you fail.”

banks in 12 other states including Nevada, California and Texas. All loan and pricing decisions for the Bank of Michigan will be made in Farmington Hills by the bank itself, not the holding company.

Not only will the Bank of Michigan offer small business loans and services, but also everyday banking such as savings and checking accounts. Although it is a small community bank, it will still be a profitable organization.

Patrons will be able to get a return on their investment just as they would at any other bank.

Mochmar is confident that the new bank will tremendously aid Chaldean-owned business. “The bank will have a really profound effect on real-estate secured com-

mercial loans with quick approval,” said Mochmar. “We already processed eight loan applications.”

Chaldean-Americans are among the most prominent smallbusiness leaders in metro Detroit.

According to the Chaldean Chamber of Commerce, two out of three Chaldean-American households own their own business. In fact, Chaldeans own 6,000 businesses in Michigan and 90 percent of the independent groceries in the city of Detroit are Chaldean-owned.

The Bank of Michigan is currently under construction at 30095 Northwestern Highway in Farmington Hills. It is scheduled to open in January. It will grow as needed.

airing the word “diaper” with “delights” may seem odd, but in fact, Diaper Delights non-edible cakes make the perfect gift for new mothers.

Baby products such as diapers, outfits, blankets and rattles are put together in the form of a two- or three-tiered layer cake.

After all, the word “diaper” spelled backwards is “repaid,” so the new mother is “repaid” with a diaper cake for all her hard work.

The cakes can also be created with a theme, such as with cartoon characters or decorated to match the newly decorated nursery. Diaper Delights were at hit at the Boutique Shopping Extravaganza at the Southfield Manor on November 4 and have also been featured at baby expo shows, including one recently held at the Pontiac Silverdome. They can also be found at The Art House and Baby and Me on Orchard Lake Road.

Six months ago, Amy Yousif Vanlacken and her sister thought it would be a great idea to create these non-edible diaper cakes. They joined forces with Eva Jabero, who says that a

Vanlacken and Jabero get together every few weeks to go over supplies and talk about the business. Each does the assembling of the Diaper Delights at home during her spare time.

Customers’ reactions are what inspire her to practice this skilled hobby along with her full time job at a development and management company, Jabero said.

“Hearing these compliments and seeing the customers’ appreciation makes it all worth it,” she noted.

Dough 2 cups all purpose flour 4 cups semolina 1/2 cup warm water 1 package dry yeast 1 1/2 cups butter, softened 1/2 cup shortening 3 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground mahleb (black cherry kernels) 1 cup milk powdered sugar to garnish

Stuffing 2 pounds pitted dates 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg Instructions 1. To make the stuffing, place pitted dates in a pan with the butter, place on low heat, and stir gently until dates are soft.

Add ground cinnamon

and nutmeg and mix well to make smooth paste.

Divide into 30 portions and roll each portion into a cylinder.

2. To make the dough, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon sugar.
