Selfish Calendar Is your calendar crazy and you find it next to impossible to be effective at work? Here are some focus areas to start incorporating to help be more productive at work: •

Keep Your Calendar Up to Date – Simple, but a no-brainer in our world. If you’re not doing this, you need to be.

Utilize Focus Time – Microsoft already uses AI to look at your calendar and create placeholders of Focus Time. If you’re not using this feature, start. It will be a game changer.

Include Personal Time – I’m fortunate enough to have a gym in my building. I put a priority on fitness, so lunch is my personal time and it’s on my calendar. There will always be exceptions (client meetings, internal training, All Hands calls, etc., but you can manage exceptions). If you’re a staff manager, please make sure you understand your folks’ personal times and they understand yours.

Back-to-Back-to-Back - Avoid fitting in ½ hour meetings when you see an opening. Back-to-back meetings can make for a difficult day and don’t allow for any meeting overrun or coffee refills (which are mission critical).

Attendees – When you’re scheduling a meeting, think about who needs to attend. A meeting shouldn’t include a long list of folks that ‘might’ be interested in attending but will probably stay on mute and multi-task during the call. It should only include those folks that are integral to the discussion topic and are expected to be a contributor to the meeting. IMO, this is one of the largest drivers behind our calendars being so busy.

Continuous Improvement 1. Don’t fall into the rut of carrying meetings over year to year just because. Truly think about why you have the meeting and are they still needed. I’m a big believer in only adding a meeting if I remove a meeting. 2. And one of the golden rules, please respect everyone’s time. Start the meeting when it’s scheduled to start and end the meeting when it’s scheduled to end. 3. If you need to reschedule or cancel meetings, do so with as much notice to the attendees as possible (again respectful of folk’s time). A good practice is to review meetings for the week Monday morning and make adjustments that you know are needed – then manage the exceptions.

Project Highlight Project Manager: Ranjit Bhandari Indianapolis, IN

Project Name: Airfield Lighting Improvements RW 8R-26L & 17-35 Client Name: Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority Location: Grand Rapids, MI (GRR)

CHA Revenue:

$267,000 Design/Bid Phase $400,000 Construction Phase

Construction Cost:

$5,190.155

Design Start: Issued For Bid: Construction Start: Completion:

April 2022 May 2022 May 2023 October 2023

Key Staff: Nathan Lienhart, Ranjit Bhandari, Riley Richter, John Wujek, Matt Renner, Keith Leung, Bill Steele, Scott Crimmins Brief Description of Work Provided: CHA was selected by GFIAA for providing engineering design, bid phase assistance, and is now providing construction administration and observation services for the airfield lighting improvement project at GRR. Project Background Runways 8R-26L, 8L-26R and 17-35 are the three runways at GRR. High Intensity Runway Lights (HIRLs) associated Hold Position Signs (HPS) and Distance Remaining Signs (DRS) for these runways were installed over 20 years ago. An Airfield Lighting Analysis study (2010) identified various components in need of repair or replacement. The study also recommended initiating a “Guidance Sign Circuit Modification” project to address improperly circuited existing guidance signage system which also provided an opportunity to potential LightEmitting Diode (LED) implementation on the signage system. Other recommendations included installing Airfield Lighting Control and Monitoring System (ALCMS) and circuit segmentation. The Authority had also identified hot spots on the airfield and installation of Runway Guard Lights (RGLs) would be significant from a safety point of view. GFIAA aimed to improve the lighting and signage infrastructures through the replacement of ALCMS, replacement of HIRLs with LED technology variants, replacement of HPSs and DRSs, installation of new RGL systems and associated cable/conduit installation. . Project Formulation The rehabilitation of aging airfield lighting and signage infrastructure for Runways 8R-26L, 17-35, and 8L-26R was the major topic of discussion in the project scoping meeting held on February 28, 2022. The items discussed included necessity of the airfield lighting improvement project, efficiency (replacement of outdated quartz and incandescent infrastructure with LED technology variant), construction safety and phasing, reliability, consistency and durability of new parts and equipment and sustainability in connection with efficiency. As a result, it was confirmed that GFIAA will adopt a two-phased approach in addressing airfield lighting improvements at the airport – Phase 1 for work associated with Runways 8R-26L & 17-35 (covered by this project) and Phase 2 for that associated with Runway 8L-26R.

• •

Runway 17-35 Replacement of distance remaining signs for Runway 8R-26L & Runway 17-35 Installation of new elevated RGL system on Runway 8R-26L and Runway 17-35 Installation of new in-pavement RGLs on Taxiways M, A2, A1 and B Installation of new field circuit cabling in existing or new conduit or duct Replacement of homerun cabling for the runway circuits in existing conduit or duct

CHA engaged subconsultants to perform topographic survey and cost estimation during the design/bid phase. CHA administered a public bidding process for the client, utilizing a web-based bid service. Construction Phase The GFIAA planned to adopt a two-staged approach to this project – material procurement and construction phase, the former of which included administrative shop drawing submittals review to mitigate active supply chain issues in the market. Despite all the efforts on beginning construction in August 2022, the supply chain issues meant the project construction could not be started on scheduled time. CHA worked with the awarded Contractor for the project to perform troubleshooting in the runway circuits onsite to improve the lightings up to acceptable standards until the materials were procured and the project could begin. As such the project construction eventually started on May 1, 2023, and is planned to be substantially complete in October 2023.. Project Challenges The project formulation and schedule were driven by the deteriorating lighting conditions in the airfield in urgent need of rehabilitation. The market was still just trying to recover since the COVID-19 pandemic with escalating construction costs and supplychain uncertainties. The major hurdle was procurement of electrical items (regulators, HIRL, inset and elevated RGL fixtures, etc.). As mentioned above, a two-staged approach to the project was adopted to address this issue. The design phase was fast tracked to meet a very tight schedule so that material procurement could be started. The materials shortage issue was a crucial item and eventually led to postponement of the construction phase to May 2023 from initially planned August 2022. Troubleshooting the runway circuits helped with temporarily improving the airfield lighting and allowed the contractor to procure the materials and complete the project in acceptable timeframe.

Design/Bid Phase The basis of design from the Project Formulation phase was progressed through final design. Final design tasks included: • Replacement of ALCMS equipment in existing vault, airport traffic control tower (ATCT), and associated facilities • Replacement of HIRL with LED technology variants on Runway 8R-26L & Runway 17-35 • Replacement of hold position signs for Runway 8R-26L &

IND Runway 5L-23R & Taxiway B Rehabilitation Project Receives Envision Verified Award In August of 2023, the Runway 5L-23R & Taxiway B Rehabilitation Project at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) was awarded Envision Verified, recognizing a significant achievement. Envision addresses the project’s performance across 64 sustainability criteria in an effort to foster a dramatic and necessary improvement in the performance of infrastructure. Rehabilitation of Runway 5L-23R and Taxiway B was deemed necessary to accommodate additional air traffic during the reconstruction of Runway 5R-23L. CHA was selected as the prime design firm and was tasked with not only the design but the implementation of a significant sustainability initiative. The project was successful, and the runway was rehabilitated before the South runway underwent reconstruction. To successfully secure the award, IAA, CHA’s design team, and the construction contractor all had to make commitments to implementing and tracking sustainability. CHA can be credited with ensuring the success of this achievement through recurrent stakeholder engagement that informed design, development of the Construction Safety and Phasing Plan (CSPP), and by mentoring the selected sustainability subconsultant, a certified Women Business Enterprise (WBE), throughout the verification process for the Envision Award. To date, only thirteen Envision awards have gone to airport projects. While not all projects will pursue an Envision award, the Envision framework can be used on all infrastructure projects to increase social, environmental, operational, and economic benefits. QUOTE FROM ISI – “It is an honor for the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure to recognize the 5L-23R Runway and Taxiways B Rehabilitation Project. The entire project team deserves credit for emphasizing strong collaboration and teamwork around shared project goals.” - Kristi Wamstad, ISI Verification Director

Q: What is the one thing you cannot resist? A: Free food!

convinced on the safety aspect of it. But I think that speaks more on my family’s low confidence in my abilities!

Q: Where is your favorite place to be? A: Around a fire with friends and family and a drink in hand. Especially a wintertime fire pit after a day of skiing.

Q: If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? A: Assuming there was a sizable amount left over after all the responsible things, I’d charter a private jet just for the experience.

Q: Where is the best place you’ve traveled to and why? A: Hawaii. It has everything like surfing, hiking, scuba diving, and city nightlife. But most importantly, it’s where I proposed to my fiancée, Gabby! Q: What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had? A: Light Board Operator for a theater production. You know when people say “Cue the Lights!” I was the guy on the other side of that, cueing the lights. Q: What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this? A: My original job hunting out of college was in real estate development. But if I could be anything I wanted, I’d be in the creative field like an actor or musician. Q: Any favorite line from a movie? A: “Boogity, boogity, boogity, boys! Let’s go racing!” I grew up watching NASCAR because of the movie Cars, and when I heard Darrell Waltrip say this on live TV, I lost my mind! Q: If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? A: Fly a plane, but it’s very expensive, and my family isn’t

Q: When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? A: Lately, it’s been a lot of scrolling through Zillow and looking at multi-million dollar mansions. Q: What is something you learned in the last week? A: How to operate a 1950s 8mm film camera. I haven’t actually shot anything on it since the film required is surprisingly expensive. Q: What’s your favorite indoor/outdoor activity? A: Indoor – Playing video games; Outdoor – Skiing Q: What is the first concert you attended? A: San Francisco Symphony. It was a school field trip when I was in elementary school. Q: What chore do you absolutely hate doing? A: Cleaning the kitchen because I’m a very messy cook!
