THE ROHR CHABAD CENTER FOR JEWISH STUDENT LIFE

Dear Friend,

Welcome to Fall ‘25 at BU!

We are excited to welcome the new class and say hi again to our old friends. Every year is different and holds unique energy. We can’t wait to see it unfold and we remind you that Chabad is all about YOU.

As of this writing, there are still hostages languishing in Gaza, and continued tensions on a few fronts. We pray for the swift return of our hostages and an end to all the pain and turmoil. In this difficult time, our community at BU has proven to be robust, resilient, and supportive. But our fervent hope is that going forward, we will be able to channel our strength for positive purposes only. We look forward to sharing joyous times together and embracing each of you in the signature warmth of our community. As you peruse this guide we trust you will find programs that jump out at you and get you excited to join with your friends! If there is anything you want to add to the mix, please step forward with your ideas and we’ll help you make it happen!

Most importantly, if you are not already in our user friendly texting system, get in on it now!

Text “Shalom” to 607-797-0015 so we can keep you in the loop.

The staff at Chabad is here to help with whatever you may need; and we do mean any need at all. Please don’t hesitate to reach out! We’re looking forward to enjoying a stellar semester with you all!

See you at Chabad!

SHABBATONS SHABBAT AT CHABAD

THE BOTIFICATION OF SOCIETY

SEPTEMBER 5-6

with guest speaker Dr. Joel Finkelstein

Friday night: Are we TikToking Toward Division? The Truth behind Algorithmic Manipulation

Shabbat Lunch: Rethinking Anti-Semitism: A synthesis of Science and Tradition

Antisemitism is both an ancient hatred and a modern psychological system— shaped by cognitive biases, social incentives, and algorithmic contagion. Finkelstein will explore cognitive mechanisms that sustain antisemitism; how these dynamics are amplified through online networks, algorithmic design, and “botification”; and how traditional Jewish frameworks of resilience, chosenness, and moral meaning offer powerful counterpoints. The talk will also highlight promising new tools—from cognitive inoculation to AI-based threat forecasting— that show real potential in disrupting antisemitic narratives and cultivating civic immunity.

Joel Finkelstein is the co-founder and chief science officer of the Network Contagion Research Institute, which deploys machine learning tools to expose the growing tide of hate and extremism on social media. He is a graduate of Princeton University, where his award winning, doctoral work focused on the Psychology and Neuroscience of addiction and social behavior. He currently directs the Network Contagion Lab at the Miller Center for Community Protection and Resilience at Rutgers University, where he trains the next generation of students in the field of critical intelligence, social-cyber threat identification, and threat forecasting. His work on hate in social media has appeared in 60 Minutes, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, NPR, and other media outlets.
