PROJECT STATEMENT

01

URBAN BIKE STOP SECOND YEAR PROJECT | FALL 2019

The main objective of this project is to design an Urban Bike Stop that will incorporate sustainable features which mainly focuses on being green and water-wise amenity. The location given is a corner site which has an area of 4,171.90 sq.m. seated along the road of Bathurst and Davenport. Originally, the site has an existing building which is the Tollkeeper’s museum.

The proposed free-standing building has an area of approximately 74.08 sq.m. which is 98% of the maximum footprint area to be built. The main access to the building is situated along Davenport Avenue. The layout of the interior has been based on an open type concept to allow and maximize the small space given. Besides, it also aims to accommodate every user while providing comfort and satisfaction. This also contains a barrier-

The Urban Bike Stop boasts modernized features through the emphasis on open space and flowing interior spaces, curtain wall to allow maximum use of natural lighting inside the building as well as to receive good ventilation. Walls are constructed to have a double stud wall which allows more room for insulation for better comfort inside the building, mainly during the winter.

The building stands on the far west side of the site where it receives most of the sun rays anytime during the day.

For that reason, a gable type roof inclined 30degrees towards the north - front face was chosen to fit in the structure and at the same time designed to carry solar panels. Solar tube lights were also incorporated in the roof in the north side - rear as a substitute of using artificial lighting during the night time. Apart from this, windows were designed to have double glazing to keep the building more energy-efficient and

reduce sound absorption coming from the outside.

Similarly, part of the proposal is to make the building water-wise amenity. The site has a large potential in terms of water collection for the site is contoured. It slopes away from the rear side(north) towards the front side(south side). As an advantage to this feature of the site, bioswale design harmonized within it. It is used to transport water to plants or storm drains while the soil infiltrates it before it would run down towards the water tank of the building.

Another feature also includes a greywater system, which aims to collect the water that has been already used from the sink, shower, and lavatory, to be cleaned and reused.

Moreover, this building will capture attention and particularly attract cyclists to engage themselves to have a proper facility where can they take a rest and stop. Along with this, they could also repair and tune their bikes before they continue their journey.

SECOND YEAR PROJECT | WINTER 2019

In this exercise, we are assigned to make a detail plan of a washroom that complies to the standard of Ontario Building Code and other relative resources. The layout of this washroom was taken from the Urban Bike Stop Building. We are asked to consider the public washroom as it is accessible to any users. This washroom serves an access to a barrier-free bedroom.

As a part of sustainable design, accessibility is also one of the most important aspect of designing a livable space.

This detail plan emphasized the standard parameters that gives the main users an ease of access that will serve them comfortably. It’s a challenge to design this room since there are a lot of things to be considered mainy the turning radius of a wheelchair. Unobstructed areas such as transfer spaces that will serve the user after using of any of the fixture. On top of that, certain distance between fixtures has to be followed in order to allow enough space for moving around inside the room.

RIBBON HOUSE

TWO-STOREY MODERN DESIGN HOUSE FIRST YEAR PROJECT | WINTER 2018

The Ribbon House design was heavily influenced by Le Corbusier’s 5 points of architecture namely Pilotis, free ground plan, free design of facade , ribbon window and roof garden. It mainly showcase the concept of ribbon window described by a Le Corbusier’s horizontal cuts across entire facades allowing interior space to be equally lit.

This project is done with a group of two members. The task is to- design a 2-storey house with a basement while incorporating sustainability. The overall design also complies to the standards of Ontario Building Code.

MIXED-USE BUILDING TECHNICAL DRAWINGS SECOND YEAR PROJECT | FALL 2019

This project was made through the collaborative effort of 4 people. The project aims to test students to design a commercial building within the compliance of part 3 in Ontario Building Code. Space requirementts are already designated in their proper location in the building and we are tasked to decide the overall exterior design. Materials are structly observed and we made

sure that we look into OBC minimum requirements.

The project requires the overall technical drawings that was done only using AutoCad. The main challenge in making this project is how to work with a proper collaborationtechniques. We are tested to as if we were working in an office environment.

STACKT TOGETHER

ISONATION COMPETITION | SUMMER 2020 Collaborator: Laura Batista

“Stackt Together� is a two-storey house designed for a couple who is currently working from home. The main idea is to design it out of stacked shipping containers together to create a two-floor dwelling that perfectly fits the needs of a couple that spends isolation together.

The overall goal was to make the house layout create a separation between the home and the work office environment to help the users be not distracted from non-work into work tasks. A designated workspace is a key for the productivity and creativity of a person for long periods of time. With that, there were two provided offices that serve each couple, the smaller office is located on the ground floor while the bigger office is on the second floor.

The main floor creates an ambiance of gathering through the open space concept provided for the living room, kitchen, and dining area. The home office layout is simple and minimal in design. It also unifies the outdoors with the interior spaces through the wide window openings that also provide natural

lighting ventilation. Thus, keeping the brain in the right mode to fully focus while working remotely.

One of the most important things considered in this project is designing a space where people could live comfortably and take care of their well-being. With this in mind, plants are distributed all around the space to provide a sense of nature in the house. In addition, a green wall complements the second-floor office, the patio, and the second-floor hallway. The two offices also provide a relaxation area next to the big windows where they could take small breaks in between the working period.

Moreover, as the world keeps changing, and the probabilities of working from home increases, the necessity of providing functional office spaces in dwellings has to be considered by every architect and designer. Most importantly this house represents a collective space where users, nature, and materials merged all together to let users live, work, and play.
