About The Consortium Our Mission The mission of The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, an alliance of leading American business schools and some of our country’s top corporations, is to enhance diversity in business education and leadership by helping to reduce the serious underrepresentation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans in both our member schools’ enrollments and the ranks of management.

We believe this mission can be achieved by recruiting for graduate business education qualified U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents who can demonstrate a commitment to The Consortium’s mission and can best assist The Consortium in pursuing this mission.

Our Vision The vision of The Consortium is to work toward the day when African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans are no longer underrepresented in management careers in the business community of the United States.

In 1966, Professor Sterling Schoen recognized a need for African American males to develop the business skills necessary to compete for entry level positions. To test his belief, he organized a feasibility conference that included 60 educators, business managers and community action leaders.

The conference participants agreed that a cooperative university program to hasten the entry of minority people into management positions in business was both desirable and feasible.

Today, over 600 Consortium students are enrolled in our member schools.

Peter Aranda joined The Consortium in 2003, becoming the first alumnus to lead the organizaion. Prior to his role at The Consortium, Peter pursued management consulting, then became a senior executive in the entertainment industry.

Following, he served as an adjunct faculty member and guest lecturer in business at several universities.

Message from the CEO On July 1, 2010, The Consortium welcomed the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, Los Angeles as our newest member schools. Adding these prestigious institutions to our roster of outstanding schools expands our national footprint and secures The Consortium’s presence in California – one of our country’s largest and most diverse states. The addition of these two programs will serve to enhance the pursuit and fulfillment of our mission.

The Consortium’s leadership team recently developed a new strategic plan that builds upon our progress. The plan was unanimously adopted by the Board of Trustees this fall. The plan establishes our goals for fiscal year 2011 through 2015, ensuring that The Consortium continues to grow in a rapid, but controlled fashion. Key components of the strategic plan include the following: • Addition of three new member schools, taking us to 20 by 2015 • Increasing Consortium MBA student enrollment to 500 per class without compromising quality • Additional corporate partners in key industries to support our students’ career objectives • Improving brand recognition, messaging and reputation • Increasing financial support to member schools to support student enrollment growth Despite the recession, The Consortium remains financially strong. This strength enables the organization to successfully work toward these goals. While organizations with similar missions have contracted, The Consortium continues growing thanks to the steadfast financial commitment of our 17 member schools, 75 corporate partners and 1,200 individual donors. These philanthropists include our two newest Eagle Club members who join a generous group of donors. I hope their meaningful contributions will inspire you to give and enable The Consortium to cultivate our next generation of business leaders who will join our 6,000 alumni in America’s diverse work force.

This fall, we matriculated our largest class to date with 315 outstanding students. We expect this trend to continue with the class of 2013. We anticipate welcoming more than 350 new students this summer at our 45th Annual Orientation Program & Career Forum (OP). Please spread the word – your referrals are an important element of our student recruiting effort. This year’s OP will convene in Minneapolis, Minnesota, commencing on June 26th and running through June 29th.

We are delighted that Target Corporation will serve as the event’s lead sponsor. We anticipate this year’s conference to be our best yet. We hope to see you there.

Message from the Board Chair The most successful businesses of the future will be forward-thinking organizations that are committed to inclusion. This vision inspires The Consortium – the preeminent organization for promoting diversity and inclusion in American business – and it inspires me each day in my work as a professor and dean of the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.

Diversity elevates the performance of individuals and groups. Diversity challenges people to continuously examine their values, leading to enlightenment.

And diversity stimulates learning.

It is a privilege for me to serve as Board Chair of The Consortium. Over the last year, the organization has wisely looked ahead of today’s troubled economic times to envision a future of growth and opportunity. The organization’s leadership crafted a five-year strategic plan and added high-caliber MBA programs, new corporate partners and new member schools, which now total 17.

The Consortium seeks out America’s best and brightest MBA candidates who believe in its mission of inclusion and urges them to “Dream. Lead. Achieve.” These students, in turn, enhance MBA programs at some of the nation’s finest graduate schools of management. As graduates, they go on to improve American business and inspire the next generation.

The history of The Consortium is a rich one, full of success stories. Consortium students have lifted the Darden School community; as I welcomed the newest group of students, I saw that the future is, indeed, bright.

Fund Development The Fund Development department seeks to engage, empower and equip each of our constituency groups in an effort to enhance the organization’s overall development capacity. Through the development of a comprehensive fundraising plan grounded in best practices, we seek to create a sustainable philanthropic culture which promotes our long-term fiscal health and growth.

• We celebrated a 94% retention rate as it relates to sustaining corporate partnerships with 57 of 58 companies this year.

In FY2009, during one of the most critical economic periods in our nation’s history, The Consortium witnessed a 23% decrease in philanthropic support. Although this decrease was significant, our overall operation was not severely impacted, and we extended 299 fellowships. This year, facing similar economic challenges, many of our key stakeholders increased their level of philanthropic support while taking advantage of a number of branding opportunities. This validated their commitment to advancing the 44-year old mission of The Consortium. What follows are some of the celebrated highlights from the development department this fiscal year:

• We received philanthropic contributions from 1,208 individual donors compared to 462 in 2009, representing a 161% increase related to the total number of individual donors.

• We celebrated a 19.7% increase in corporate philanthropic contributions in support of the annual fellowship fund from $1,557,045 in 2009 to $1,863,845 in 2010.

• We exceeded our 2010 Annual Orientation Program & Career Forum underwriting goal by 6.2%, securing $701,000 in underwriting commitments.

• We witnessed a 13% increase in alumni/individual giving securing $204,766 in philanthropic contributions compared to $180,880 in FY2009.

• We celebrated a 94% student giving rate (556 of 593).

Additionally, we celebrated an 85% giving rate (256 of 301 students in attendance) with our incoming Consortium class during OP. • We celebrated a 524% increase in student giving from $5,960 to $37,180.

We would like to thank all of our stakeholders for your loyalty and dedication. Your continued support will enable The Consortium to make a quantum leap into the future, while advancing our very important mission - a mission too critical to abandon, and too important to take for granted.

Anthony Davis joined The Consortium as Vice President of Fund Development in 2009 to oversee the philanthropic activity from alumni, students, corporate partners and foundations. Over his 20-year career, Davis provided leadership resulting in over $60 million in gifts and grants for multiple non-profit organizations.

Program Administration Realizing a stellar year with the enrollment of our largest class ever, 315 students, the Program Administration unit is poised for future growth. As The Consortium’s largest department, consisting of three distinct areas and eight employees, the group is responsible for recruiting, special events and communications. Our tagline is, “All things student are our business.”

The Program Administration group is responsible for identifying and recruiting prospective students for our member schools, developing programming delivered during our Annual Orientation Program & Career Forum (OP) and keeping students and alumni connected via social media initiatives and publications.

Congruent with our strategic plan, our goal is to understand, improve and build The Consortium’s value proposition for key stakeholders; specifically our students and member schools. Program Administration is chartered with growing the applicant pool and increasing the number of entering first-year students to 500 by 2015. We will achieve this goal without compromising the quality of our applicant pool.

We continue developing systems and processes that support our member schools’ involvement and position us to grow our member school base to 20 in the next five years. With the implementation of new online application and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems in 2009, applicant data and reporting are more readily available to both applicants and schools.

To enhance application processing amongst The Consortium, applicants and its member schools, we implemented additional system functionality to better inform applicants of their status throughout the application processing cycle. We increased event registration efficiencies by implementing the event module component of our online application. Additional efforts to streamline the application process make it possible for applicants to upload scanned copies of official transcripts. This functionality has reduced in-house application processing time by 30%.

To allow a more seamless transference of electronic application data, data export templates are customized to allow easier importation of data into member schools’ in-house systems. To date, 10 member schools are participating in this process. Our goal is to customize all application data templates within the next 12 to 18 months.

We realized substantial savings and gained efficiencies by transitioning IN Magazine, www.inmagazine.cgsm.org, from an issue-driven hard copy publication to an online Web site.

The new format broadens the scope of our outreach and integrates media with our IN Media page, which includes podcasts, videos and a robust photo gallery dating back to The Consortium’s earliest days. Additionally, the site houses our CEO’s blog, www.peteraranda.cgsm.org, which features a variety of topics in the areas of diversity and business.

Each year we look forward to OP, which brings together our constituents. In 2010, we accommodated more than 1,000 participants. We look forward to next year’s event, when we will welcome the newest Consortium members.

Vice President, Program Administration since July 2008, Janice Wells-White is charged with providing leadership and strategic direction for student recruitment, communications and special events. Previously, she held leadership roles in corporate, government and academic sectors. Prior to joining The Consortium, she served as the Director, Admissions and Recruitment at Washington University in St. Louis, managing one of the country’s #1 graduate programs.

Finance and Administration This group first ensures that business activity, including the raising and disbursement of funds, is conducted in a professional manner and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Beyond that, we seek to use financial information and market data to help allocate dollars to where they will best enable us to achieve our mission and advise of the financial implication of larger policy decisions.

In FY2010 there were a number of examples across the full spectrum of The Consortium’s activities: • As we have grown, it became apparent that new auditors were required to keep up with our increasing scope.

To that end, we retained Brown Smith Wallace. Headquartered in St. Louis, they are the 100th largest auditing firm in America and maintain a dedicated not-for-profit practice.

They recently completed their work and we are pleased to reproduce their unqualified fairness opinion elsewhere in this report.

• Total revenue reached $22.3 million, with increases in all major revenue categories. Our operating surplus doubled and net assets reached a record high $2.2 million. The graphs in the financial review section offer additional commentary.

• Like many businesses, The Consortium has experienced rising health insurance costs. In FY2010 we actively shopped our policy and chose a new carrier in order to realize

substantial savings. Also, we elected to self-insure a portion of the policy, assuming that the deductible cost will more than be offset by the savings in the premiums. To date, this is working better than projected and we will continue this approach with subsequent renewals.

• Planning to add the two new schools in California on July 1, 2010 was informed by an analysis of GMAT test taking patterns. They revealed that although The Consortium already was represented by University of Southern California in the West, our membership base was still substantially underdeveloped. In fact, given the population of test takers, minorities from California were only represented among our students at 44% of the rate we would have expected. Relying on this insight gave us the confidence that University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Los Angeles will be popular choices amongst prospective students.

With more schools and an increasing number of students, keeping pace with the demands of the organization for financial controls and support services continues to be a high priority. By working closely with the other departments, providing high levels of service to the staff and member schools and maintaining a high level of accuracy, we are confident that our efforts will provide a platform for sustainable growth.

Vice President of Finance & Administration since 2009, Glenn Wilen is charged with overall responsibility for maintaining the integrity of The Consortium’s financial records, providing systems support and leading the human resources function. Previously, he held positions as Vice President of Financial Planning for a diverse group of consumer product and entertainment companies.

Of the 21 first Consortium students who received fellowships in 1967, 10 graduated, four embarked upon other careers, three pursued business careers without an MBA and two were drafted.

Yale University The Consortium’s 14th Member School Yale School of Management’s first Consortium class comprised 10 percent of the class of 2010. The increasingly diverse class created a positive atmosphere on campus and the enthusiasm remains infectious.

In 2007, Yale School of Management examined the relationship between its mission statement, to educate leaders for business and society, and its diversity initiatives.

As instructed by former Dean of Yale SOM, Joel Podolny, a Standing Task Force on Diversity was created to keep diversity at the forefront of dialogue and action at the school. Staff and faculty viewed diversity as a key element to successfully accomplish its mission. According to Chris Grey, associate director for admissions and student services, “If we’re going to educate leaders for society, we had to recognize that society is made up of a mixed group of people. Effective leaders will have to communicate with people from all segments of society.”

As a result of the task force, Yale School of Management created a vision statement in 2007 detailing their commitment to promoting diversity. That commitment led to researching strategic partners, including The Consortium. Says Grey, “The Consortium’s mission is in-line with what we were trying to accomplish on campus. Becoming a member school would make the statement that we are serious about diversity.”

Partnering with The Consortium has allowed Yale School of Management to continue building a diverse campus. “We were making strides,” says Grey, “but joining The Consortium has allowed us to make larger strides and to accomplish our goals faster.” Associating with 16 other top-tier business schools committed to diversity has allowed Yale School of Management to share its message with more prospective candidates. Using The Consortium as a resource for diversity best practices, the school incorporated a reputable Orientation Program & Career Forum (OP) workshop into their campus orientation. All incoming students now participate in Diversity Ethics Interactive Theater.

Since joining The Consortium in July 2008, applications from underrepresented minority groups for Yale School of Management have doubled. The diverse student body embraces the school’s vision.

“Diversity is not just an administrative goal,” explains Grey, “diversity is a community-wide initiative.”

The larger populations of underrepresented minorities at the school have resulted in minorities assuming leadership positions for professional clubs. Affinity groups membership has increased, and the School of Management Student Government has adopted diversity as a theme. “Diversity is more than a buzz word,” shares Grey. “We live it.”

“Because of The Consortium, we’re making it possible for underrepresented minorities to be a part of our campus,” says Grey. In turn, he hopes to contribute to The Consortium buy helping the organization further its mission. “We can now be viewed as a place that genuinely values diversity,” Grey states. “I’m proud that Yale School of Management is recognized as a leader in the diversity space.”

Cornell University The Consortium’s 15th Member School A century and a half after Ezra Cornell created an institution “where any person can find instruction in any study,” the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management continues to promote his legacy of inclusion. Johnson was the first top tier business school to establish an Office of Diversity and Inclusion in 1999 and has maintained their reputation as a thought leader in this space.

The school’s tenth dean, L. Joseph Thomas, aligned the office’s initiatives with those of the admissions committee, instituting a holistic approach to incorporating diversity.

To expand Johnson’s diversity outreach, the school’s Management Committee strategically targeted The Consortium as a partner organization. Championed by Assistant Dean of Admissions, Financial Aid, and Inclusion, Randall Sawyer, Johnson successfully joined The Consortium in 2009. Sawyer believed that becoming a Consortium member school would help the Johnson community better reflect society’s diversity.

Director of Johnson’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Nsombi Ricketts, personally recognizes the value of The Consortium. As a Consortium alumna from Emory University and member of The Consortium’s Board of Trustees, Ricketts ensuring that the partnership between The Consortium and Cornell proved successful. Committed to recruiting a large and diverse first Consortium class, Ricketts met her goal. Johnson’s underrepresented minorities constitute 15

percent of the class of 2012, a 67 percent increase from their class of 2011 numbers. Johnson currently has the most diverse class in the school’s history and the third largest Consortium class of all member schools.

Prior to the class’s formal introduction to The Consortium at the 2010 Annual Orientation Program & Career Forum (OP), Ricketts prepared them for success. Engaging the Career Management Center and Student Activities Office, students were versed on OP protocol.

Johnson made a significant investment to support their first Consortium students and six senior staff members, including Dean Thomas joined the incoming class at OP. The preparation paid off. Half of Cornell’s first Consortium class received internship offers from their engagement at OP. This accomplishment prompted increased interest from new recruiters. Ricketts comments that “the success of our students at OP allowed us to build relationships with several new

corporate partners that will benefit the entire Johnson community.”

On campus, Ricketts cites increased diverse leadership across student organizations as the biggest change since the school joined The Consortium. “Our Consortium students have had an amazing impact on the Johnson community and are creating a powerful legacy.” Consortium students currently lead the school’s Student Council and Community Impact organizations, and have been instrumental in launching new initiatives. Already starting a tradition of giving back, the class has harnessed their energy to recruit Cornell’s second Consortium class.

“My goal is to increase the number of Consortium students at Cornell and ensure their success,” says Ricketts. “I am so proud of what our first Consortium class has accomplished and I will continue to leverage Johnson’s resources to support their academic and professional goals.”

University of California, Berkeley The Consortium’s 16th Member School University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business first joined The Consortium in 1993, intending to form a long-standing relationship with the organization. When California’s Proposition 209 passed in 1996, the legislation altered Berkeley-Haas’ involvement with The Consortium. The Proposition, which prohibits public institutions from participating in programs that give preferential treatment on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin, barred the state’s public universities from participating with The Consortium.

Haas School of Business’ Interim Executive Director, Full-time MBA Admissions Stephanie Fujii recalls, “It was incredibly disappointing that UC Berkeley could not remain a Consortium member school.”

During its ten year tenure with The Consortium, the school witnessed increased minority applications.

Following their departure, the number of diversity candidates declined. Says Fujii, “Although we were still extremely committed to diversity, leaving The Consortium sent the opposite message. As a result, the number of underrepresented applicants wasn’t as strong as in the past.” Upon The Consortium amending its mission to include all U.S. citizens and permanent residents of all races and ethnicity, UC Berkeley reconsidered its status as a former member school.

“When The Consortium reviewed its mission and expanded the scope of eligibility, it made us hopeful that we could again partner,” says Fujii.

The environment on campus also created an impetus for the school to once again become a Consortium member. “There had been a tremendous push for diversity at the larger campus level,” noticed Fujii. “In 2007, UC Berkeley appointed its first vice chancellor for equity and inclusion, Dr. Gibor Basri, to provide leadership on issues of equity, inclusion and diversity.

As a public institution, we want to ensure that we have representation in every area of our community.”

The Berkeley-Haas diversity and inclusion initiatives supported by Dean Rich Lyons included rejoining The Consortium in 2010. The move generated excitement within the community. Fujii immediately received positive feedback from Consortium alumni who were pleased to hear of the school’s renewed partnership with the nonprofit.

The renewed partnership allows

the school to communicate its dedication to diversity among a wider audience. Explains Fujii, “one of the challenges we had is that Proposition 209 isn’t widely known outside of California. Misconceptions grew that Berkeley wasn’t committed to diversity. Partnering again with The Consortium sends a strong message that we greatly value, and are committed to inclusion and diversity.”

UC Berkeley has already benefitted from joining The Consortium community. This recruiting season, interest in UC Berkeley among diverse business school candidates rose. Recruiters focused on diversity have shown increased interest, as well. The positive reaction is not only helpful for the school, but for the whole Consortium family. Says Fujii, “we’re excited to see how this partnership will strengthen the diversity of our program and the larger Consortium network.”

University of California, Los Angeles The Consortium’s 17th Member School “Tim McChristian never fails to tell you that The Consortium made his journey to b-school possible,” says Linda Baldwin, assistant dean – diversity initiatives at UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Baldwin still remembers McChristian (USC ’79) introducing her to the organization in 1988. Twentytwo years later, Baldwin serves on The Consortium’s Board of Trustees, representing new member school UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Baldwin’s path to The Consortium began when Dean Judy Olian stepped into the leadership role at UCLA Anderson in 2006. The dean created a strategic plan embracing diversity. Working to maintain a broad representation of the greater community among their students at UCLA Anderson, she recognized the value of partnering with The Consortium.

According to Baldwin, diversifying the MBA program brings together a mix of perspectives, and prepares students to succeed in multicultural environments. “Students who have engaged in genuine dialogues and in seeking solutions for challenging problems are able to prepare themselves for an increasingly complex future,” she says.

“We believe that joining The Consortium provides additional support for business schools committed to full representation, which ultimately enriches the learning experiences of all students and prepares them

for global leadership roles.”

Baldwin researched and submitted the proposal to join The Consortium, an organization she recognized as enhancing diversity in MBA programs for decades. That University of California, Berkeley also planned to join The Consortium solidified UCLA Anderson’s decision to pursue the opportunity.

“Participating in The Consortium at the same time as Haas School of Business will help the University of California reach a broader group of prospective students. It represents a significant step forward in UC’s ongoing efforts to enhance access to a more diverse group of students and to promote excellence at our professional schools,” she says.

Baldwin attended the 2010 Annual Orientation Program & Career Forum (OP) in anticipation of University of California, Los Angeles officially joining The Consortium the

following month. The event allowed her to realize the impact of the organization on its community. “It was exciting to see so many exceptional young people and such support for diversity from corporate America.”

Based on her new relationship with The Consortium, Baldwin anticipates a positive experience for her institution. “The Consortium is a high quality, results driven organization. They take their mission seriously and they get it done. That’s important to us,” she says.

Baldwin believes that UCLA’s partnership with The Consortium will help the school attract a greater number of diverse, high caliber students. “Hopefully as these students thrive in both school and in their careers, they will remember to give back,” she states. “They have received tremendous opportunities as a result of The Consortium and we hope they will pay it forward in a number of ways.”

“I knew that I wanted to go into marketing and was looking for my niche within the field. At the Annual Orientation Program & Career Forum (OP), I spoke with company reps who led me to foodservice marketing. Had I not been a part of The Consortium, it is less likely that I would have found this niche. I owe my internship to OP where I got my foot in the door with this company.”

• After suffering a public support decline in FY2009, revenue gains were realized across all categories.

• Corporate and foundation support increased substantially, led by excellent retention levels and 13 new corporate partners.

• Tuition reimbursement included our first year of students at Yale University.

• The decentralized disbursement model continues to deliver a very high degree of efficiency, with 88¢ of every revenue dollar going toward student gift aid.

• Spending on the Annual Orientation Program & Career Forum declined on a percentage basis but was essentially the same as FY2009 on an absolute dollar basis.

The costs of more students were offset by a more favorable hotel contract and travel policy.

• Other non-program spending as a percent of revenue continue to track well below category norms.

• Despite the difficult philanthropic environment, the combination of revenue growth and expense control delivered The Consortium’s sixth consecutive surplus. The FY2010 amount was double the FY2009 amount, reversing a two year decline.

Get Involved Make a Donation Alumni Annual Fund Your contribution to the annual fund is critical to the viability of The Consortium. Annual Fund gifts are a major source for the fellowships that enrich the lives of Consortium students.

As each year brings new successes and new challenges, annual participation and giving from all contributors is vital to the success of Annual Fund goals.

Wallace L. Jones Endowment Fund Mr. Wallace (Wally) L. Jones, Ph.D. contributed many years of dedicated service to The Consortium and touched the lives of thousands of its students and alumni. In 1999 the Wallace L. Jones Endowment was established to honor Wally’s memory.

Each year, the interest earned from this fund provides at least one $1,000 fellowship to a first-year student who demonstrates talent, achievement and good character. The awardee is recognized at the Annual Orientation Program & Career Forum.
