FERNSLER’S ‘POISED’ PERFORMANCE LEADS NOVI TO FIRST STATE TITLE

hroughout the month of April, Novi sophomore Uli Fernsler had yet to pitch in a regular season game due to a knee injury.

The southpaw was regaining his strength so he could join an already well-established Novi pitching staff, and on June 17 at Michigan State University, Fernsler was dominant in every aspect on the mound.

Pitching a complete game and fanning eight, Fernsler led Novi to an 8-3 win over Brownstown Woodhaven in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 State Final.

“That kid (Fernsler) is about as poised as you’re going to be,” Novi coach Rick Green said. “I’ve had some young guys in the past, like Brandon Davis back in the day in 2000, and then 2001 when he pitched when he was a junior, but I’ve never had anybody this young and that poised. Novi drone program aids police in finding people, fighting crime The Novi Police Department has been able to increase its speed and efficiency in cases where time is of the essence over the last year, thanks to Lt. Keith Wuotinen and his idea to implement drones.

On May 4, Novi Police Cmdr. Kristie Gruenwald presented Wuotinen with a merit citation for his involvement in the creation of the program.

In April 2022, Wuotinen began the process of formally requesting that the City Council allow the purchase of two police drones. In May 2022, the purchase was approved, and in July, the department purchased the drones, which cost roughly $28,000 combined. By August, Wuotinen had started training 13 officers as certified police drone operators.

Wuotinen has been operating drones for around five years with his kid. He said he decided to try to bring them to the department, as he knew how much the drones could offer the city as a tool to help fight crime. He said he had read

articles on the effectiveness of drones in law enforcement.

“The usefulness of the drone could be for the kind of calls that we’re going on, like missing kids — especially kids that are young or adults that may have dementia or other risk factors that make it important to find them right away, where time matters,” said Wuotinen.

Novi state rep. seeks to limit access to animal tranquilizer linked to fentanyl

State Rep. Kelly Breen, D-Novi, is working alongside Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, a Republican, to weed out the wrongful use of the animal tranquilizer xylazine, which is sometimes called “tranq.”

Breen will be introducing legislation that, if passed, would make the now easily accessible drug a Schedule 2 narcotic and only available for its intended use in veterinary medicine.

“This is something, though, that we need to take immediate action on,” Breen, whose family lost a friend to a fentanyl overdose, told members of the media during a June 9 press conference. “What we are seeing here with tranq is taking our worst opioid epidemic and compounding it. It’s horrific.”

Xylazine use is creating a major health crisis across the country, Bouchard said.

The drug has become a popular cutting agent in controlled substances. According to Bouchard, since February, it has been seen in approximately 85% of fentanyl seized in Oakland County. Xylazine is not made for human use, and its effects on the human body are severe.

“It’s a terrible drug. On the human physiological makeup, it begins to basically degrade and disintegrate your skin over time,” said Bouchard.

“It makes the saving efforts that we have less and less effective, because there is no impact of Narcan on this particular drug.

So it may take multiple doses of Narcan to save someone who has overdosed on fentanyl laced with tranq.”

Xylazine will cause the skin to begin to decay. Chronic wounds, infections and lesions are seen on those who have taken it. It

can also cause brain damage and affect mental health.

“It’s a huge, huge threat to health and a big problem,” said Bouchard.

Tranq is easily accessible to anyone, as there are no restrictions on its purchase. Xylazine reportedly was first noticed in street drugs on the East Coast, especially in Philadelphia. It is not federally regulated and can easily be ordered online and delivered to one’s doorstep. Bouchard said the drug is steadily being shipped in from China and Mexico. However, Bouchard said it is also being stolen from veterinary clinics.

Breen said that combating the epidemic will take a multifaceted approach. She said they not only need to make sure it becomes a Schedule 2 narcotic so that it can be stopped at the border, but officials also need to increase the amount of testing being done for it, as well as to educate the public on the dangers of the drug and what first responders can do to help someone who might be overdosing from it.

Xylazine has a sedation effect in humans — it lowers breathing and blood pressure, and it slows down the heart rate. It also has very severe withdrawal symptoms. It is traditionally used as a liquid injectable for large animals in veterinary medicine. However, on the street it is more commonly seen in a solid or powder form. It can be consumed in a variety of ways, including being swallowed, inhaled, smoked, snorted or injected.

“There is nothing more important to me than the safety of the community that I represent, so I want to be able to drop this legislation quickly,” said Breen, who anticipates introducing the legislation by the end of the month.

Police are on the lookout for speeders

The Novi Police Department is making a special effort to enforce speeding laws through June 25, as speeding contributes to many traffic accidents and injuries.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is looking for public feedback regarding its future plans, including its intention to auction off almost 6,000 acres of public wilderness.

The DNR is determining plans on approximately 16,000 acres of land, 66.7% of which it intends to retain, 3% it intends on offering to alternative conservation partners, 1.3% it intends to exchange with other organizations, and 29% of which it intends to sell through public auction.

The land in question is located in Baraga, Benzie, Clare, Clinton, Genesee, Ionia, Manistee, Mecosta, Newaygo, Shiawassee and Wayne counties. The DNR said it’s part of its multiyear state land review process to determine which parcels best help the department to deliver broad public access to quality outdoor recreation opportunities, while also protecting natural and cultural resources on those lands.

Those wishing to weigh in can email the DNR at dnr-statelandreview@michigan.gov. All feedback is due by June 30.

WATCH Dropped keys lead to missing vehicle

A white 2014 Ford Edge was reported stolen from an apartment complex on June 11.

The owner told police that he had parked the SUV in the parking lot of the Novi Ridge Apartments and Townhomes, near 10 Mile and Meadowbrook roads, at 11 p.m. June 10, and when he returned at 11 a.m. the next day, the Edge was missing. He said he was sure he locked the car, but he might have dropped his keys outside his car.

According to the report, there was no broken glass to indicate that a window had been broken to gain entry. There was no video evidence of the crime, and although the man had a lien on his vehicle, he said he was current on payments, so it should not have been repossessed. The case was closed pending more information.

Dresses stolen from car

Four Pakistani designer dresses were stolen from a woman’s 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS while she was getting her hair done at Salon Bellezza, on Main Street, between 9:15 and 11:15 a.m. June 8.

The dresses included two Crimson by Saira Shakira dresses valued at $400 each, another dress of an unknown brand worth $325, and a Sobia Nazir dress valued at

assistance from the Oakland County Sheriff ’s Office and the Michigan State Police.

Although the other departments were willing to help, they weren’t always available to do so.

According to Wuotinen, sometimes they had an hour response time or longer, and sometimes they were just not able to assist. The department’s own drones, he said, are always available, charged and ready to go.

“This way we are not waiting. An hour can make a big difference in how far somebody can get,” he said.

The Novi Police Department now has 14 officers certified to operate its two DJI Matrice 30T drones. The drones can fly up to 51 mph and are typically flown at 33 mph. The drones can fly for 30 minutes before needing to charge, so the department has a total of eight batteries to allow for two

Cellphone reported stolen at Suburban Collection Showplace

A man’s phone was stolen after he sat it down on a toilet paper holder in a bathroom stall at Suburban Collection Showplace at 10 a.m. June 7. The man said he realized that he had left it in the bathroom 10 minutes later, but the iPhone 13 was gone when he returned.

The phone, valued at $700, was matte gray and in a clear plastic case. The phone was purchased overseas and had an overseas phone number. The man told police that he searched the lost and found at the Showplace on both June 7 and June 8 but the phone didn’t turn up.

He said he attempted to call the phone and trace it via the “Find My iPhone” app, but the phone was shut off. The man said he then wiped the iPhone clean remotely via his laptop. The man left the U.S. on June 9. The case has now been closed.

“The drone can be put up in the air, and it gets a viewpoint that we just don’t have, being on the ground,” said Gruenwald.

“Being able to go up and have that bird’s-eye view, so to speak, all the time is extremely beneficial, because we can utilize it for traffic issues. We can utilize it for missing kids or trying to find vulnerable adults. We can utilize it when looking for a suspect or having a better understanding if we need to tactically enter in a particular way on some calls for See DRONES on page 8A

The woman told police that she thought she had locked her vehicle, but because there was no damage to the doors or windows, she thought she forgot to lock the car.

Police advised the woman that there were no cameras that had recorded the incident and to look online in an attempt to locate the dresses, if they were being offered for resale. If she were to locate the dresses, she was advised to contact police.

service that we have. It just gives us a completely different way to look at the area so that we can do our job better.”

In order to operate the drones, each operator is individually certified with a Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 license.

The department has an agency license, which allows anybody in the agency to fly the drones if the agency trains them.

Since implementing the program, the drones have aided in locating six missing kids and five vulnerable adults, and helped prevent two suicides. The drones have also aided in the investigation of bomb threats by clearing roofs and parking lot areas. This includes two bomb threats at Novi schools last fall and one at Nordstrom in April.

The drones helped to locate an armed burglary suspect who was hiding under a covered boat, as well as to prevent officers — thanks to the thermal cameras — from unnecessarily going into frigid waters after a car was found submerged in a pond.

The drones also provide officers with a better way to monitor traffic conditions. The camera offers officers the ability to see what is causing a traffic delay and to see if they can

“I thought it was very innovative, the way (Wuotinen) had presented options on being able to utilize it and how it would reduce our response time with some of the circumstances in getting information or being able to be more efficient and effective.

I thought it was outstanding,” said Gruenwald. “Drones give officers the ability to patrol a relatively large area in a short period of time.”

“I think it’s a great tool that helps us better serve our community, and if one of my own children were missing, I would want my local police department to do everything they could do in a very timely manner to look for my child,” Wuotinen said. “If I had a vulnerable adult in my family, same thing.

I would want them to be able to have the tools that are available to them, things like drones, K-9 dogs, whatever it takes to find that missing person, because minutes count, especially in adverse weather, or if there are disabilities or special needs of a person, or if the child is of a young age. I can only imagine that I would want all those tools to be available so that they can have the best possible outcome in terms of finding that person, and the drone lets us do that.”

Junior Haruka Ishibashi, who was eliminated in the second round of the singles flight 3 at the state finals, will headline the leadership group next season alongside Sardar, Parivakkam, Sharma and Singh.

Sardar said she’s ready to take on a senior mentor role.

“Stepping into that as more of a senior and not a junior captain, in a sense, I’ll probably be taking on more of a sense of caring and trying to keep kids in the program,” Sardar said. “For me, that’s what my seniors did. They really tried to keep it as fun as possible and keep my love for tennis going, so that’s my goal for the season next year.”

Now holding three straight regional titles and a Kensington Lakes Activities AssociationWest league title this season, Novi’s core of youth and veteran leaders will look to make some noise next season as one of the favorites in not just the league and region, but in Division 1 as well.

With historic feats and continued success, Sardar said the team feels it’s starting to be recognized for its accomplishments.

“We definitely do,” Sardar said. “It’s not to say there hasn’t been a lot of talent, but we do feel a lot more excited that we’re gaining recognition for the team and showing all the hard work we do in practice and putting it out on the court. It definitely feels really nice to walk around school and hear, ‘Oh my gosh, congratulations on Novi tennis.’ I never had that my freshman year.”

It was a historic showing for Novi High School’s doubles flights at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 State Finals at Hope College June 3.

For the first time in school history, all four doubles flights advanced to the state semifinals round, with doubles flight four advancing to the state championship to help Novi earn fourth at the MHSAA state finals, improving on their fifth-place finish last season.

Sweeping three of four doubles flights at the Region 2 Championship at Novi Middle School, the doubles crew strongly progressed this season, coach Dan Lowes said. Junior Mandira Sardar and sophomore Alice Chen (doubles flight 1), senior Grace Chacko and junior Abi Parivakkam (doubles flight 2), and junior Mahi Sharma and sophomore Rashi Bajpai (doubles flight 3) all earned regional championships in their respective doubles flights.

“All the doubles have worked really well and improved,” Lowes said. “It’s more than just getting the ball. They’re looking for strategies and reading and recognizing plays that other teams are doing, which is always a plus.”

Senior Natalie Restuccia and junior Arushi Singh, who were four seeds in the doubles flight 4, eliminated top seed Troy to advance to the state championship round, where the team would lose in three sets to Division 1 state champion Ann Arbor Pioneer.

Novi’s young guns gave it their all in the singles flights, with freshman Samaara George and sophomore Deb Saha both falling in the first round in singles flights 1 and 2, respectively.

Freshman sensation Rebecca Liu, who was the singles flight 4 regional champion this season, earned a third-seed placement in the tournament and advanced to the state semifinals before losing to Clarkston’s second-seeded Charlotte Partchenko.

Liu, the younger sister of senior standout Alicen Liu, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology commit, showed that she’s going to be a force to be reckoned with for the next three years at Novi.

“During tryouts and watching her play, we noticed she had a lot of variety with her shots and that she was consistent,” Lowes said.

“As a freshman, you never know what they’re going to do or how they’re going to mature throughout the season. She’s done a very nice job of that.”

Alicen Liu, a four-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net, was unable to compete in the singles flight 1 at the state finals due to an illness, but was able to end her high school career as the regional champion in the flight.

Novi’s pitching is dominant, and there’s no disputing that. Senior Andrew Abler, a Harvard University commit, went six innings in the state semifinals before handing the ball to Fernsler, who earned the win in a fourinning effort as Novi beat Mattawan 4-1.

Novi’s pitching staff allowed only 14 runs in seven games during the state tournament, but there was one facet of Novi’s game that took a significant uptick in the state tournament.

In the state final, Novi’s offense exploded as junior Thad Lawler, batting seventh, collected a two-RBI base hit in the third inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Junior Andrew Kummer, junior Brendon Bennett and senior Brett Reed each tallied RBI singles in the fourth inning to extend Novi’s lead to 5-0.

Junior Caleb Walker and Bennett, the two and three hitters, went 6-for-9 in the win as Woodhaven used up four different arms in the loss.

Novi’s six-through-nine hitters (Brett Reed, Lawler, senior Alex Czapski and sophomore Trevor Reed) went 6-for-14 in the state finals, which Green said unlocked the offense’s full potential.

“That’s the part we needed to get going,” Green said. “These guys were struggling for most of the year. I moved Walker from the eight spot to the two spot, and when we did that he seemed to shine in that spot. Hitting between all those good hitters helped him

out. He takes a lot of pitches, and that’s what we like. We like to get that pitcher worked up in the pitch count.”

While Novi stormed the field and the student section went wild as Fernsler collected the final out, the “what-if ” of the season surrounded Czapski and what could have been the final at-bat of Novi’s season.

As Novi tallied only one hit up until the last inning against Mattawan, Czapski came to the plate with a runner on first and second with two outs and the season on the line as Novi trailed 1-0. That’s when Czapski had a moment he’ll never forget, as he barreled one up the middle for a game-tying base hit.

“I’m not going to lie and tell you that I had supreme confidence going up to the plate, because it was the most nerve-wracking moment of my life,” Czapski said. “When it got to that 2-2 count, I just knew that I had to shorten everything up and make a nice, simple swing. He threw me a high fastball, which anyone on the team can tell you that I’m absolutely brutal at hitting those. I just remember the ball going up the middle and hearing the student section go ballistic.”

Czapski has been part of the Novi baseball family for a while now as he watched his brothers, Mark and Cam, play for Novi baseball.

A Novi Wildcat through and through, Czapski said the state title win felt like a full circle moment for him.

“The feeling is unrivaled,” Czapski said.

“I have been going to Wildcat baseball games ever since I was a kid to watch my older brothers play. Even though having brothers means you butt heads 24/7, I’m glad that this championship became the one thing that my

brothers could truly be proud of me for and show their appreciation for it.”

While Novi was in celebration mode after the win, coach Green gave a celebratory speech that honored Novi superfan Tom Marcus, who passed away June 16 at the age of 85.

Marcus was a staple of Novi athletics, cheering at every sport from freshman to varsity teams, and there was no doubt he was looking on as Novi made history.

“I’m sure he was there watching us from the scoreboard or something, you know,” Green said.

“Tom has always been Novi’s biggest supporter and came to every sporting event,” Abler said. “He always brought joy to the games, and the news about him fueled us to play with passion.”
