Berkley Days festival will not happen in 2025

BERKLEY — The Berkley Days festival officially will not be happening in 2025.

The Berkley Days Association has decided to not hold Berkley Days this year and instead the organization will look to save money to hold a bigger event next year.

Ferndale voters approve millage restoration, school bond proposal

FERNDALE — Two major proposals on the ballot in Ferndale during the May 6 election were approved by voters.

Voters in the city of Ferndale and the Ferndale Public Schools district approved their proposals for a millage restoration and bond, respectively.

Ferndale’s millage restoration proposal was approved with a little over 58% of the vote, according

“We basically came to that decision because we’re going to have to rethink the event and we didn’t want to just throw something together just to have something,” Berkley Days Committee Chair Denise Downen said. “We wanted to have that extra time to plan something new from scratch.”

Downen said the decision to not pursue Berkley Days this year was a hard one, but also it was a choice that made sense for the committee.

“Berkley Days is a tradition and we didn’t want to disappoint anyone by not having it, but at the same time, we realize that this is going to be very different from what the community is used to,” she said. “We really wanted to put in that extra time and care to plan something that would be memorable.

For the past two years, the Berkley Days festival has been plagued by safety issues and instances of fights breaking out on the event grounds.

The 2023 event saw a number of juveniles attend wearing masks, carrying duffel bags and bringing BB guns. After fights broke out, the decision was made to cancel the rest of the festival.

Organizers attempted to curb any concerns of safety with increased security measures the following year. While the event ran with limited issues for the first two days in 2024,

of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, her student council and was a student of the year at Oakland Schools Technical Campus, where she studied computer programming.

“I’ve been programming for about six years now,” she said. “I started in seventh grade, and it’s just been something I’ve been doing for a while. … I’ve actually been a straight-A student my whole K through 12 career. So, it’s kind of just natural to me.”

Bolling-Woods credited her parents, Theresa Bolling and Alex Woods, for helping push her in her studies.

“They pushed me to strive to be great,” she said. “I was always (with) my head in the books. I’m a reader. I love learning new things and whatnot. So, it was just fun to me.”

While Bolling-Woods knows she wants to pursue computer science and possibly software and development, she isn’t sure yet what she wants to do with her studies and plans to figure that out during her time in Ann Arbor.

The future Wolverine said her departure from high school is a bittersweet one, but she’s ready to move on and do something different in her life.

“Every year I used to tell my dad how worried I was for the next upcoming school year, but this time I think I’m actually ready to start this next chapter,” she said.

At Berkley High School, Zeinab Erreghaoui, of Southfield, will be graduating and heading to Michigan State Uni-

versity to study international relations and premed. Erreghaoui, 18, is the daughter of Moroccan immigrants, a fact which influenced the direction of her future collegiate studies.

“Where they’re originally from, it’s kind of hard for them to access health care,” she said. “Stuff like that we just access here in America that we have the privilege to have. I feel like it kind of got me involved and really passionate to go into international relations, because it can help me travel to the Middle East or Africa and help those people that are impoverished and less fortunate compared to us in America. I feel like me studying international relations is definitely going to give me that opportunity to help make a change.”

Erreghaoui finished her high school career strong with a 3.7 GPA, but she wasn’t always getting straight A’s and said she had a rough start at the beginning of high school.

“Freshman year, I just kind of fell into, I would say, the wrong crowd and I was really just focusing on friendships and hanging out and doing things that wasn’t really important,” she said. “I didn’t fail or anything. It’s just I didn’t get straight A’s like I do now. That kind of stuff just set me back and caused my GPA to plummet down.”

Erreghaoui said her family’s support helped her focus her priorities to become a better student.

The incoming Spartan said leaving Berkley involves a “bunch of mixed emotions,” as she is both nervous to be creating her own schedule and doing work without her parents’ support, but also excited to be on her own.

“I am nervous about how I’m going to tackle down a bunch of college work and just (doing) chores myself, but I am really excited to be on my own and get that sense of adulthood,” she said.

Proposals

to the unofficial results. Of the 4,230 total votes, 2,455 approved the measure against 1,775 residents who voted no, which accounted for just under 42% of the total.

City Manager Colleen O’Toole thanked the residents for approving the millage and encouraged everyone, whether they voted for or against the proposal, to reach out and communicate with the city on issues.

“We still want to communicate to all residents, whether you supported the millage or not, that if you have questions or concerns, this is a very open and transparent City Hall,” she said. “They are always welcome to contact me or any member of our staff and we are really encouraging a culture of openness and spirit of transparency within the organization.”

The city’s restoration proposal was for 5.445 mills and will bring the city’s total rate to 16.3 mills. It will expire after 10 years.

According to Ferndale’s FAQ on the proposal, starting with the summer 2026 tax bill there will be a 5.4452 mill levy on the property tax bill. This will replace the current 4.2808 mill levy on the 2024 summer tax bill that is set to expire this year.

As the city is unable to levy a new millage for tax year 2025, this year Ferndale will levy about 15.4 mills and, in the first year of the new millage, the rate will be 16.3.

With the millage passing, O’Toole said Ferndale does not have to look at any staffing cuts and now can plan for repairs to several facilities.

“The condition at our DPW building and Fire Station #1, especially, are really rough,” she said. “We need to address the challenges inherent in those buildings for staff safety, for staff comfort, as well as just general upkeep. And I think that the community recognizes that we have an obligation to maintain what we put out, be it parks, be it our buildings, be it the streets, whatever they are serviced by, we have a fiduciary responsibility to be good stewards of those resources, and now we have the capacity, financially, to be able to do that.”

Ferndale Public Schools’ bond saw more support and more voters, as more than 70% of voters approved the proposal.

The district’s bond proposal was for $114.8 million, in which funds will be used to improve the Ferndale Middle School and High School buildings and athletic fields, a new academic wing to better separate the middle and high school spaces, upgraded band rooms, modernized classrooms and expanded common areas, safer entry points, and improved student services.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Ferndale community for once again showing strong support for our students and schools,” Superintendent Camille Hibbler said in a prepared statement. “This bond builds on the success of our 2020 initiative and brings long-overdue investment to our secondary learning environments.”

The question saw 5,228 voters voice their opinions on the ballot, with 3,665 voting to approve against 1,563 voting to reject the measure, according to the unofficial results.

The district said in a press release that the bond will support the “development of modern, flexible learning spaces and address long-standing facility needs while maintaining the current tax rate for residents.”

“This outcome reflects a shared vision for the future of Ferndale Public Schools,” Hibbler stated. “It is also a testament to the dedication of our families, staff, and community partners who engaged in meaningful dialogue and helped spread the word. We thank everyone who took the time to learn about the proposal and cast their vote.”

“This is a proud day for our district,” Board of Education President Sandra Dukhie added in a prepared statement. “The passage of this bond reaffirms that our community believes in the importance of strong public schools and is willing to invest in the spaces where students learn and grow. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank the community for their trust and partnership.”

EXHIBIT AT LIBRARY

HUNTINGTON WOODS — The Woods Gallery is hosting an exhibit through June 26 of wildlife photography. According to a press release, the exhibit “Fauna” features wildlife photographs by husband and wife photographers Bryce Denison and Linda Piasecki. The exhibit began with wildlife educator “The Creature Man” Dan Briere bringing his snakes, a hedgehog, parrots, a baby alligator, a chinchilla and more and sharing them with local elementary-age children. On Wednesday, June 4, Denison and Piasecki will give a photography talk for adults about the “Fauna” exhibit from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. in the gallery, which is located on the lower level of the Huntington Woods Library at 26415 Scotia Road.

OVERNIGHT PARKING PROGRAM

HUNTINGTON WOODS — The Huntington Woods Public Safety Department has introduced a new way for residents to park overnight in the city. The city announced on its website a new overnight parking program that allows residents to request overnight parking permission online, as opposed to in the past where they would have to call to get permission. The new site is operational at frontlinepss.com/huntingtonwoods.

Last call for award nominations

FERNDALE — The last day to submit nominations for Ferndale Public Schools’ John F. Kennedy Award is Wednesday, May 14.

The JFK Award, according to the district, “provides an annual opportunity for teachers, administrators, and members of the community to nominate and recognize high school seniors who demonstrate a combination of outstanding scholarship and individual responsibility.”

“The nominees should exemplify the goals of public

education, which include integrity, maturity, industry, scholarship, citizenship, athletic and/or cultural contributions, school and/or community support, and personal goals,” a press release states.

Students can be seniors at Ferndale High School, University High School and the Tri-County Educational Center. To nominate a senior student, nominators should compose a brief summary stating their reasons for making a nomination and how the nominee exemplifies those traits. Nominations can be submitted at ferndaleschools.org.

EVENT SUFFERS DOWNPOUR

Ferndale and Berkley plan Memorial Day events

FERNDALE/BERKLEY — The cities of Ferndale and Berkley will be holding their respective Memorial Day events on Monday, May 26. Ferndale will hold its 106th annual Memorial Day Parade starting at 10 a.m. near the corner of Livernois Street and West Maplehurst Street. The parade route will travel along Livernois to Oakridge Street on the way to Pinecrest Drive, then on Nine Mile Road and ending on Livernois at the Memorial Mall. The memorial ceremony will take place immediately following the parade with the reading of the names of local veterans who have died in the last year. Berkley’s annual Memorial Day ceremony will start at 11 a.m. at the city’s Veterans Memorial, located at the gazebo by City Hall at 3338 Coolidge Highway. It is hosted by American Legion Post 374. There also will be an event at noon at Post 374, located at 2079 W. 12 Mile Road.

Construction

“The unfortunate part for all this for us, though, is there’s no good time,” Pazuchowski said of the project. “We have such a small footprint. We got Newport (Boulevard) getting sewers and a new road, and then we’re getting Scotia that’s getting mill and fill, and then we have that. And with a school there, we were able to delay it. So that project will not start now until June 16 so they’ll be out of school. So that’s awesome, but the problem is, and we try to explain that to residents, there’s just no good time if we wait. The kids are back in school in September, you know, with the roads and that. So we just couldn’t

delay anything.”

The bond construction at Burton includes building a new multipurpose cafeteria addition and new finishes for the gymnasium, the district’s director of communications, Jessica Stilger, said in a prepared statement.

“The new addition is in an area that occupied part of the playground, so there is a new playground area inside the track now to relocate the equipment,” she stated. “Currently, the masonry is nearly done and steel is being installed on the new addition. We expect the new addition to be completed in late August/early September. The gym work will be completed this summer, and the new playground area is nearly complete.”

The Gillham Recreation Center in Huntington Woods will be getting a new roof and heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system through a project that will begin June 16. It will be happening at the same time as bond construction work at Burton Elementary School.

Construction of new facility at Martin Road Park planned to begin this year

FERNDALE — Construction on a project in Ferndale’s Martin Road Park will look to begin later this year.

At its April 28 meeting, the City Council approved a community project funding agreement with the Department of Housing and Urban Development for a grant that totals $704,669.

“(The grant) was kind of one of those things coming out of the pandemic where there was a lot of opportunities for funding for recreation and support of outdoor recreation facilities.” Assistant City Manager James Krizan said.

The grant funding will be used to construct a facility at Martin Road Park to support the splash pad and other activities at the park.

The facility will have modern restrooms, a concession stand and the ability to rent equipment for park activities such as pickleball and basketball.

“It’s to help support the park and activities with the splash pad,” Krizan said. “A year ago, we were trying to leverage all the different grant funding we got and try and see if we could — as we were going through the original Headlee millage — seeing if we could get funding to do a bigger project, which wasn’t supported in the fall. So, we

pivoted back to the original plan, which was this support facility.”

Parks and Recreation Director LaReina Wheeler said additional restrooms also will help support the splash pad, which is one of the park’s main attractions.

“The addition of the splash pad brings more people to the park, and we only have the current restroom building that we have there, which doesn’t accommodate as many people,” she said.

According to Wheeler, the number of people permitted to be on the splash pad at once is connected to how many restrooms are on-site.

Wheeler said they first noticed they would need more restrooms to accommodate the visitors when the splash pad opened in 2022.

“The amount of restrooms that we currently have in the park reduces … the amount of users that we could have on a splash pad drastically,” she said.

“We’re looking to add new playground equipment as well to the park,” she continued. “With all those current and planned new improvements, (it) will also bring more people to the park, which, again, our current restroom can’t accommodate the increased amount of visitors we’ll have to our park.”

Wheeler said construction of the facility will start later this year and be completed

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER

Reporting Requirements Not Met for GLWA Springwells

We are required to monitor your drinking water for specifc contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not our drinking water meets health standards. We routinely monitor your water for turbidity (cloudiness). This tells us whether we are effectively fltering the water supply. We did not monitor individual flter turbidity for fve hours on September 2, 2024, due to an interruption of power at the GLWA Springwells Water Treatment Plant.

“Turbidity has no health effects. However, turbidity can interfere with disinfection and provide a medium for microbial growth. Turbidity may indicate the presence of disease causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites which can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches.” These symptoms are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice.

What should I do? There is nothing you need to do at this time. This is not an emergency. You do not need to boil water or use an alternative source of water at this time. Even though this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we did to correct the situation.

What happened? What is being done? Power was restored and turbidity monitoring resumed on September 2, 2024. Additional response actions have also been implemented at the plant. We are making every effort to ensure this does not happen again.

“We plan to, with this building, sell concessions so we can cater to more people within our park, which will ultimately allow them to spend more time in the park, as opposed to having to leave, to go get something to eat or go get something to drink,” she said. “We do want to make them more comfortable in the park so we will be able

to sell some concessions as well out of this building, in addition to lend park equipment out as well just to provide more opportunities for our visitors to be able to enjoy the park and play in the park, whether that’s a pickleball paddle or a basketball or Frisbees or something of that nature.”

CRIME WATCH

Deposits fraudulently redirected

BERKLEY — A Berkley business owner reported a case of fraud to the Public Safety Department at 6:40 p.m. May 6 in the 3200 block of Coolidge Highway.

According to the report, the business owner, a 33-year-old Ferndale woman, stated that she had received an email from someone pretending to be an employee. The real employee had recently signed a new contract with the woman’s business; however, the person pretending to be the employee changed where to send future deposits.

The change was made and the busi-

ness made four separate deposits — one of $1,115.72 and three of $1,400 — totaling $5,315.72. These were made between May 2 and May 5.

On May 6, the real employee stated that she had not received any payments, which is when it was discovered that the money was not being deposited in the correct account.

The business owner contacted her bcredit union, which stated that it would attempt to recover the funds, though there was no update yet, according to the Public Safety Department, from the credit union.
