Human Flow-Dominated Urban Space

Recent urban studies show that increasing commuting time has significantly influenced daily urban behavior.

Longer commuting hours are associated with higher stress levels and lower subjective well-being.

As commuting pressure increases, people tend to reduce their stay duration in public spaces and prioritize efficient movement.

In dense metropolitan cities such as Seoul, public spaces are increasingly characterized by continuous pedestrian flow rather than prolonged stay or interaction.

Loss of Environmental Perception As cities operate at an accelerated pace, human flow continues to move, while weather and environmental conditions are also constantly changing and flowing.

However, under high-pressure urban life, people’s contact with the natural environment gradually decreases, and their ability to perceive environmental changes declines accordingly.People continue moving through the city, and the environment continues to change, yet the two become increasingly unrelated. People rarely pause to experience the weather and surrounding environment.

This condition leads to a perceptual disconnection between human flow and environmental flow in the city.

The target users are people living in the urban environment, including office workers, students, residents, visitors, and commuters. In the fast-paced city, they face continuous life and work pressure while gradually losing opportunities to engage with nature and the environment.

Target Space

Since human flow and environmental changes occur simultaneously in the city but rarely intersect, people gradually lose awareness of weather and environmental conditions while moving through fastpaced urban life. At the same time, stress caused by urban living continues to accumulate.

Therefore, this project proposes a Flow Intersection Space that visualizes weather and creates spatial experiences, allowing environmental changes to be perceived and experienced. By creating opportunities for pause and interaction within urban movement, the space aims to reconnect people with the surrounding environment while also providing moments of stress relief and healing.

Located adjacent to Seoullo 7017 bridge in central Seoul, the site is positioned within a highly active urban environment with continuous pedestrian movement, strong connectivity, and direct exposure to changing weather conditions.

These characteristics provide an ideal setting for exploring the relationship between climate, human activity, and spatial experience.

High Urban Activity The site is surrounded by multiple public destinations and continuous pedestrian movement.

Strong Connectivity The site is directly connected to major roads, public transit, and the Seoul 7017 pedestrian system.

Open Urban Condition Compared to the surrounding city center, the site benefits from a relatively open spatial environment.

Climate Exposure The elevated condition enhances exposure to sunlight, wind, and seasonal weather changes.

The site serves a diverse mix of commuters, office workers, residents, and visitors throughout the day. Combined with the surrounding residential, commercial, and public facilities, it functions as an active urban node with continuous human activity.

History and Present of Seoullo 7017

1979 CONSTRUCTION Built as an elevated highway to connect Seoul Station and the south.

1979s–1990s TRAFFIC ARTERY A major elevated roadway supporting Seoul’s rapid urban growth and heavy traffic.

01 MOVEMENT-DOMINATED SPACE The space is mainly used for passing through.

Most visitors walk quickly without staying.

2000s AGING INFRASTRUCTURE The structure shows signs of deterioration and functional decline.

2006–2014 DEBATE & CLOSURE Safety concerns lead to discussions on demolition.

The road is eventually closed.

02 AGING FACILITIES & MATERIALS Facilities and materials show signs of aging.

Outdated conditions reduce overall spatial quality.

Located at a major pedestrian node within the Seoullo 7017 network, the site combines high accessibility with a unique sunken spatial condition. Despite its strong visibility and continuous foot traffic, the space currently serves mainly as a short-stay public art area, leaving significant potential for deeper interaction and experience.

Mass Progress

01 Existing Sunken Space Retain the existing circular sunken space as the foundation of the project.

02 Pedestrian Node Analysis Identify key pedestrian nodes around the site, including the Seoullo 7017 entrance and nearby bus stops.

03 Airflow-Inspired Corridor A continuous corridor connects key pedestrian nodes, inspired by airflow patterns and the linear language of the Seoullo 7017 pedestrian bridge.

04 Vertical Mass Expansion The corridor is expanded vertically to create usable architectural space while maintaining its flowing character.

05 Central Light Well A central light well is introduced to bring natural daylight deep into the building and enhance environmental quality.
