The McPherson Griffin collection represents three generations of astute collectors, items enjoyed by proud Upstate South Carolinians, Mrs. Walter Griffin, Sr., Walter Sullivan Griffin, Jr., and Mrs. Nelle Griffin McPherson.

Originally from Rome, Georgia, Walter Griffin, Jr. was raised in Greenville, South Carolina. He graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, before returning home to work in his late teens with his father, Walter Sullivan Griffin, Sr., in the cotton brokerage business and later founded the Walter S. Griffin Real Estate Company. Mrs. Walter Sullivan Griffin, Sr. (Annie Curry) instilled in her son, Walter Griffin, Jr., a love for fine American antiques of which Mr. Griffin Jr. became an avid collector.

Mr. Walter Griffin Jr. married Nelle West Mills. He regularly traveled throughout the Piedmont region of North and South Carolina searching for additions to his collection. Often Mr. Griffin traded with local farmers, receiving antiques in exchange for guns and hunting dogs.

Their daughter Nelle Mills Griffin was born in Greenville, South Carolina. She was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Sullivan Griffin, Jr. Mr. Walter Griffin, Jr. passed along his love for antiques to his beloved daughter. Together, they saw beauty in the craftsmanship, as well as having an avid appreciation for the English, American, and Southern history surrounding them.

Of particular note in this collection are the miniatures. Mr. Griffin, Jr. was intensely interested in miniature pieces of furniture. “Whether they were made for children’s use and play, or as a cabinetmakers’ samples, has never been resolved, but his eye for acquiring these and other fine pieces was extraordinary.” (Butler, Joseph. “At Home in Greenville, South Carolina” Art & Antiques, Jan. 1983: 91). He loved the beauty, scale, and detail that miniatures afforded. He and his daughter, Nelle, exhibited select pieces from their miniature collection. Their passion provided much joy for both father and daughter.

In 1955, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Griffin, Jr. built their home near downtown in Cleveland Forest neighborhood of Greenville, South Carolina. Notable southern architect, Mr. William A. Riddle Ward, Jr., (Willie Ward) designed the home for gracious southern living, entertaining, and purposeful placement of treasured pieces collected by Mrs. Griffin, Sr. and Mr. Walter Griffin, Jr. The intricate interior molding, architectural details and masterfully designed gardens delighted friends and visitors.

Their home was featured in the January 1983 issue of Art & Antiques, in “At Home in Greenville, South Carolina” the home was described as the “essence of 18th-century American design” and the pieces throughout the home are a “testament to his (Mr. Griffin’s) extraordinary eye and collecting success.”

Miss Griffin was a teenager when her family moved into the stately home overlooking Cleveland Park.

Following high school, she studied at Mount Vernon Seminary College in Washington, D.C., where she focused on interior design. She also interned at the White House for a brief period, where she gained greater appreciation for American fine and decorative art. Miss Griffin returned to Greenville where she studied at Furman University.

In 1972, Miss Griffin married Greenville native, George Bruce McPherson, Jr. Mr. McPherson, Jr. was a graduate of Sewanee Military Academy and the University of South Carolina, where he obtained an M.B.A. After graduate school, he became a securities dealer stockbroker. Together, Bruce and Nelle enjoyed forty-three wonderful years of marriage and shared an interest collecting art and antiques. They focused their collection on southern art, samplers, and South Carolina history.

Mrs. McPherson was involved with the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion Foundation with First Lady Ann “Tunky” Riley. She was an active gardener, enjoyed flower arranging, and was a member of Dorothy Haynsworth Garden Club and Carolina Foothills Garden Club. In 1982, the McPhersons formed Designs Unlimited, an antiques and accessories busi9

ness, which brought them great joy for over 30 years. Designs Unlimited had a presence in Greenville, Atlanta, and Hendersonville.

Mr. and Mrs. McPherson, Jr. traveled annually to New England where they would spend one month every summer, using Kennebunkport, Maine, as their base to search for exquisite items. Over the years, they forged friendships and business relationships with numerous art and antiques dealers throughout New England.

The McPherson’s were proud supporters and long-time benefactors of the Greenville County Museum of Art’s annual Antiques Show and Gala. They also were actively involved with First Presbyterian Church as well as loyal advocates and supporters of the Y.M.C.A. of Greenville.

Mr. Walter Griffin, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce McPherson, Jr. lived in a thoughtful nostalgic world and were drawn to rare and interesting objects. Their collection gives you a glimpse into their eloquent and charming southern estate and reflects their southern vision, appreciation for history, and the never-ending quest for beauty.

William Riddle Ward, Jr. William Riddle Ward, Jr. (1890-1984) A native of Alabama, Ward studied architecture at Auburn University and at the renowned Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He worked in New York and then moved to Greenville and designed more than a hundred houses throughout South Carolina as well as a number of significant public buildings. Ward was known for his formal Colonial Revival and Georgian designs. Three Greenville houses designed by Ward have been listed in the National Register of Historic Places: The Hugh Aiken House in Greenville, The R. Perry Turner House, Greer, and the Robert G. Turner House, Greer.

The History of Greenville, South Carolina

The city of Greenville is situated on land that was once Cherokee hunting ground, close to a colonists’ settlement. In 1770, Richard Pearis, an Indian trader from Virginia who was living with a chief ’s daughter, received about 100,000 acres of hunting lands from the Cherokees. Pearis set up a plantation on the banks of the Reedy River in what is now downtown Greenville. His Great Plains Plantation included a saw mill, grist mill, and stables together with a trading post.

At the onset of the Revolutionary War, the struggle in the South Carolina back country between Tories and Patriots was fierce. Pearis threw his support to the Tories and their Cherokee allies, and together they terrorized upstate Patriots. In retaliation, a Patriot troop raided his plantation, burned his mill and home, and briefly jailed him in Charleston. He never returned to the upstate, but he his legacy continues because of Paris Mountain, his namesake. After the Revolution, the new state of South Carolina claimed the Cherokees’ territory and began distributing it to Patriot soldiers as payment for their wartime services. In 1786, the state legislature formed Greenville (originally spelled Greeneville) County, naming it for Gen. Nathanael Greene, the hero of the American southern campaign.

The first owner of the land that became city of Greenville was Thomas Brandon of Union, who purchased 400 acres that had once been Pearis’s in 1784. Several years later, Lemuel Alston purchased Brandon’ s holdings and additional acreage, amassing over 11,000 acres around the Reedy River.

The General Assembly sited the county’s courthouse on Alston’s property in 1794. Three years later he platted 60 lots for a village he called Pleasantburg, with a log courthouse surrounded by a court square. He built his home, Prospect Hill, called by a visitor “the finest dwelling in the upstate,” at the crest of a sycamore - lined avenue north of Court Square.

In 1815, attracted by the rich soil of Alabama, Alston sold his acreage for $27,557 to Vardry McBee of Lincolnton, North Carolina, a 40 - year old tanner and merchant. He gave land for the first schools (the Greenville Male and Female Academies), for the first four churches (Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian), and he established a brick yard, rock quarry, and saw mill, in addition to corn and grist mills, a tannery, and a large general store. Seven miles south of town he built a paper factory and cotton and woolen mills.

William Aiken Walker

Cronicler of the South (South Carolina, 1839-1921) A genre painter, William Aiken Walker, is primarily known for his expressions of plantations, cotton fields, African Americans, and dock scenes. The son of a prominent cotton agent, he was a true Southerner, born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1838.

Walker completed his first painting at twelve and painted until his death in 1921. Although he studied in Dusseldorf sometime during the 1860s, he was primarily self-taught.

A social and friendly man, Walker often entertained friends with stories of his southern travels, which included Florida, Galveston, Texas, and the Carolinas. It is thought that he was somewhat inspired by European artistic subjects and styles, and also made at least one trip to that continent.

Currier and Ives published several of his color lithographs in 1884; most notably “Cotton Plantation on the Mississippi” and “The Levee, New Orleans,” and his recognition soon grew. Throughout the Civil War, Walker remained in Charleston; becoming a member of the Confederate Engineer Corps, drafting sketch and preparing maps for the Confederacy.

From 1876 to 1905, Walker regarded New Orleans as his home. There he became especially close to Everett B. D. Fabino Julio, with whom he tried to form an art league. Although their league did not succeed, the project led to what would later become the Southern Art Union, which was formed in 1880, the earliest such association in New Orleans.

Walkers most productive period was during the early 1880s when he painted hundreds of pictures of poor rustic blacks. He enjoyed North Carolina, and spent many summers at Arden Park Lodge in the Asheville area, until it burned in 1919. The lodge was owned by Charles Beale of Arden, who became Walker’s patron, enabling him to become a regular artist-in-residence and to sell his paintings at the lodge, with scenes of blacks working on tobacco farms.

His works are detailed due to some use of a camera, and sometimes lack of emotional depth. The number of landscapes he painted increased after 1890. Walker had added talents, and was known to sing, play the violin and piano, and compose poetry in English and French. One of his art students was Blanche Blanchard, who copied some of his work and painted in Walkers style.

The name of William Aiken Walker is practically synonymous with painting in the South. He found a niche painting detailed Southern rural genre scenes of postwar cotton pickers, for which he remains best known. Walker used an assembly line method of a sort to turn out post card-size portraits which he sold to the Yankee tourist trade as souvenirs of the Old South.

His biographers tell that he could sing, play the piano and violin and recite poetry admirably, and that he was often called upon to entertain. his legacy is a body of work which records faithfully and kindly the life of the Negroes, the landscape and the industry from Maryland to Florida and west to the Mississippi throughout the difficult years of Reconstruction. (From Charleston Renaissance Gallery) Throughout the 1880s, he produced a prodigious quantity of genre paintings featuring the lives of African Americans engaged in agrarian enterprise on Southern plantations.

From his earliest post-war canvases depicting the ruins of Charleston’s churches to his signature plantation landscapes such as Noon Day Pause in the Cotton Field to his African American figure studies, Walker’s paintings reflect his interpretation of the devastated cotton kingdom and its displaced inhabitants. In these scenes, Walker approached his subjects with a nostalgic sensibility that was simultaneously sympathetic and caricatural, creating works that document, in detail, their presence in a changing socioeconomic construct while avoiding any issues of personal identity.

Xanthus Russell Smith (American, 1839-1929)

Born to the artists William Thompson Russell Smith and Mary Priscilla Wilson Smith, Xanthus Smith received his first formal art education at home. The Smiths’ legendary stone manor house, Edgehill, was long a destination for the most ambitious collectors and earnest artists in mid-nineteenth century Philadelphia, and it was in this nurturing environment that young Smith honed his precocious skills as a draftsman. From 1851-1852, he accompanied his parents and sister on a study tour of Europe where he surveyed old master paintings, paying particular notice to the realism and naturalism of the English landscape school.

“Art is founded on nature,” Smith would later comment, and “whenever it strays from its truths and beauties it is off the track.”

Upon his return to Philadelphia, Smith began to paint landscapes while also attending chemistry classes at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1858, he enrolled in the antique class at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; there, his penchant for realism found resonance with English pre-Raphaelite paintings characterized by sharp focus and high finish.

Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Smith, a passionate loyalist, enlisted in the United States Navy.

He served as captain’s clerk on the U.S.S. Wabash, Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont’s flagship, from September 1862 until July 1863. Throughout his tour of duty, Smith was continually making small watercolor sketches and drawings he would later use as the foundations for his trademark painstakingly detailed works such as A South Carolina Coast Scene and Hilton Head, Port Royal, S.C. His drawings soon came to the attention of Admiral Du Pont, who commissioned Smith to paint ships of the fleet. Smith also maintained a meticulous journal during his years of service, and his account of life on the Wabash provides a rare glimpse of the war as seen through the eyes of an artist.

Relieved from duty in October 1864, Smith returned to Philadelphia where he began to exhibit his paintings of federal vessels and the South Carolina coast, drawing critical acclaim in the local press.

Between 1868 and 1876, Smith executed fifteen large-scale marine paintings depicting the war’s major naval engagements, culminating in the sensational display of his massive Battle of the Kearsarge and Alabama at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. Though demand for Smith’s marine scenes waned in the 1880s and beyond, Smith continued to paint in a precise style, drawing on his site-specific knowledge of Civil War scenes. He also served as an active fundraiser for veterans’ organizations and pursued photographic interests. In his last decade, Smith began to refer to himself as the “oldest living and practicing artist with Civil War experiences.”

Artist Xanthus Smith, the most prolific painter of Civil War maritime scenes, one of the few Civil War marine painters who actually served aboard ship during the conflict. It was his first-hand experience in the Civil War as he served on the U.S.S. Wabash that he drew upon to complete his masterpieces of Civil War. In Inlet at Station Creek, South Carolina , Smith gives an artistically superb account of South Carolina as he saw it when he served onboard the Wabash at that location from 1862-1863. Smith would complete sketches during the war, sometimes taking a launch to the shore to complete pictures from a different perspective such as this piece.

In a successful effort to depict a more calm scene with ships in the distance and smaller craft in the foreground, this oil on canvas was done in 1866 just after the war. Smith was a master at using the small canvas to capture detail, as he put it, “small, compact and neat,� in this case incorporating the South Carolina palmetto tree prominently in the composition.

Lot 398 Sheraton Miniature Chest of Drawers, Signed by Maker Julius S. Lyon

When furniture making was a craft rather than a matter of mass production, one did not go to a shop, select one or more pieces of furniture and order them sent home. Furniture like clothing, was made to order, and cabinetmaker and client conferred as to style, ornamentation and the like. But then as now, the client naturally wanted to know how his proposed purchase was going to look when finished.

Miniatures were produced on a scale of a quarter inch to the foot with windows and doors all in proper place, and even the exterior painted to match the color and simulate the material to be used. It became a vivid depiction to the future owner of how his proposed purchased was going to look when finished.

Certain miniatures from the late 17th to the second quarter of the 19th century, with nicely executed line and ornament, in all various furniture periods, were replicas in miniature of the larger pieces in vogue at the time.

These miniatures were not intended as toys for children.

It was neither practical nor economical for the cabinetmaker to have full size display pieces on hand. Their shops were small and a well-executed large piece took time. But the same piece done in a miniature could be fashioned without too great an expenditure of either time or material. Such sample pieces could be displayed on shelves not to use up valuable space in an establishment that was often both workshop and showroom.

Salesman’s samples were said to be working or non-working scale models of all kinds of items, wooden furniture, or a stove. The miniatures were convenient for traveling salesmen. While salesman’s samples were top of the line, some of the not-so-perfect miniatures, called ‘apprentice pieces’, were made by helpers who were learning the trade. Salesman’s samples are highly sought after by collectors, and are scarce in supply.

G C G C CONDITIONS OF SALE The following Conditions of Sale incorporate the Guide to Buyers for the auction and apply to all bidders and purchasers in the auction.

If there is a conflict between the terms and conditions herein and those in the Guide to Buyers, then the terms and conditions herein shall apply.

1. Regardless of your bidding method, all bidders must have an account with Childress Gaffney Auctions, LLC (“CGA” and the “Auctioneer”) and be registered for the specific sale in which they intend to bid. By placing a bid in the auction, you agree to be bound by these Conditions of Sale.

2. Property (a “lot” or “lots”) in this sale may be subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and CGA below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the low auction estimate, but in no case will it exceed that amount. A representative of CGA will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot.

3. Except as provided in paragraph 2 above, the highest bidder as determined by the Auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the Auctioneer shall have sole discretion to withdraw any bid or reoffer the lot for sale. The auctioneer shall have sole discretion to refuse any bid, refuse to acknowledge any bidder, or to change the bidding increments on a lot. Bidder spending in excess of $100,000 will be required to make a deposit of good funds with CGA at least five (5) days in advance of the sale to participate in an auction.

4. All purchasers shall pay for and removed purchased property from the premises within seven (7) days of the auction. CGA may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty (30) days of the date of sale. CGA shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than seven (7) days from the date of sale (“Removal Period”). If any property has not been removed by the end of the Removal Period, at the option of CGA (a) CGA may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed within the Removal Period, and/or (b) CGA may place the merchandise in a subsequent auction, without a reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds to the purchaser.

5. CGA accepts cash, check, credit cards, and wire transfers for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with CGA or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. CGA reserves the right to hold property purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay CGA a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment methods.

6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, CGA may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale.

7. In no event will the liability of CGA to any purchaser with respect to any lot exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such lot.

8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shipping companies. Some property may be subject to export restrictions from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered species. The purchaser is solely responsible for applying for and obtaining any applicable export license or approval for a lot. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of the lot.

9. Sales in South Carolina are subject to sales tax. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties may be exempt from sales tax upon submission of proper documentation.

10. The purchaser will be charged a premium (the “Buyer’s Premium”) equal to 20% the final bid price up to and including $500,000, plus 15% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $500,000, to be paid by the purchaser as part of the purchase price.

11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms printed within, posted, and announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid.

12. CGA makes a limited warranty to the original purchaser of record concerning the authenticity of each lot for a period of fourteen (14) days after purchaser’s receipt of the purchased lot. If a buyer is not satisfied that the lot purchased is authentic, the buyer may, at his or her own expense, obtain the opinion of two mutually-agreed-upon, recognized experts in the field of the disputed lot. If these experts determine that the lot is not authentic, the buyer’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the rescission of the sale and refund of the amount paid for the lot. It is specifically understood and agreed that the rescission of the sale and refund is exclusive and in lieu of any other remedy which might otherwise be available as a matter of law or in equity, and such remedy is conditioned upon the buyer returning the property in the same condition as at the time of sale. CGA shall not be liable for any incidental or consequential damages. All sales are final, with no returns or refunds except as provided in this limited warranty.

Except as provided in the immediately preceding paragraph, ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD “AS IS,” and neither CGA nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be purchaser agrees to pay CGA a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. 13. CGA and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. CGA expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for CGA relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall always remain, the property of CGA and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent.

14. These Conditions of Sale shall be governed by the laws of the State of South Carolina (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law). The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against CGA in connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of South Carolina or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the nonexclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit.

G AUCTION TERMS C Absentee Bid A method of bidding for those who cannot or do not wish to attend an auction. Absentee bids are also called “left” or “order” bids. May be placed by filling out and submitting an Absentee Bid Form in person, by fax, by scan or online. Auctioneers also place bids on behalf of absentee bidders As-Is/Where-Is: Almost every auction you’ll attend offers all property for sale at auction “as is,” meaning that the property is sold with all existing faults and imperfections. Potential buyers must inspect each item carefully before bidding. The exception to “as-is/where-is” at most large auction houses is authenticity. Usually, there is a time within a lot can be returned if both the auction house and consignor agree it is fake or counterfeit. Asking price (a.k.a. bid price): When a bidder places a bid, the auctioneer asks the other bidders if any of them will pay a specific amount above the current bid – the ask price Bid Increment: The amount by which the auctioneer increases the bidding. In general, the auctioneer will request bids of about 10% higher than the previous bid. For instance, if the bidding opens at $5000, subsequent bids of $5500, $6000, $6500, etc. would follow. The auctioneer can vary at her discretion.

Bidder number: Every registered bidder receives a unique bidder number when they register for a given auction. If you are the highest bidder, the lot number, the final bid price and your bidder number goes into the auctioneer’s book and a back-up set of records known as clerking sheets to verify your purchase.

Passed): If there are no bids on a lot, or if bidding does not reach the lowest possible selling price, the lot is “bought in,” meaning it is unsold and remains the property of the owner. The auctioneer signifies this by saying “pass”. Buy-in fee: If a lot fails to sell, many auction houses charge a buy-in fee so they can recoup some or all of the money invested in bringing the lot to market. It is usually a percentage of the lowest possible selling price. (Rago never charges a buy-in fee.)

Buyer: The person who placed the highest bid on an item becomes the buyer or new owner of that item when his bid is accepted.

Buyer’s Premium The percentage above the hammer price paid by the buyer to the auction house that is part of the total purchase price.

Cataloguing Every lot offered for sale is described by a description of the object and any known facts, such as the name of the artist or maker, the time of its creation, its provenance (history of its ownership), any exhibitions or publications in which it has appeared. This information is published in the auction catalogue, both in print and online. (See Lot Detail Terms Defined.)

Clerk A person employed by auction house to record for each lot sold, the lot number, the final bid price and the bidding number of the high bidder.

Competing bids Before and during a sale, an auction house accepts competing bids for a lot from absentee bidders, phone bidders, online and in room bidders.

Condition Report A written description of the imperfections of an object (or lack thereof), particularly of characteristics that might affect value.

This is essential information for prospective bidders.

Consignor (a.k.a. Seller) The owner who is authorizing the auction house to act as agent on his or her behalf for sale.

Consignor Agreement The contract between the auction house and consignor.

Fair Warning When an auctioneer announces “fair warning”, she’s saying “bid now or I am closing the lot. This is your last chance.” If there are no bids forthcoming, the auctioneer’s hammer falls and the sale is completed.

Final Selling Price Hammer Price/High Bid + Buyer’s Premium Gavel The hammer traditionally used by the auctioneer’s to mark the start of a sale and to mark the close of bidding on each lot.
