HELLO, NEIGHBORS When I was growing up, I loved watching Sesame Street. In just one hour, those loveable Muppets and actors would teach me everything from counting and letters to how to resolve conflict. I know I'm not alone here - how many of you are hearing "sunny day, sweeping the clouds away..." right now? In many of the most memorable scenes, the lessons were taught using music and songs. One of my all-time favorite Sesame Street songs is “The People in Your Neighborhood.” The song was performed nearly thirty times on various episodes from 1969 until its last performance in 2007. I sang it so much that my mom actually bought me the book (don't judge me, but I still sing it from time to time)! The song was so great because it asked a simple but really important question: “who are the people in your neighborhood?...the people that you meet…when you’re walking down the street…the people that you meet each day.” Those lyrics were followed by identification of the various roles in the neighborhood and a description of what each person did – “…a fireman is a person in your neighborhood…a fireman is brave it’s said, his engine is shiny red, (continued on next page) if there’s a fire anywhere about, I’ll be sure to put it out.”
