VCA Battle Ground
Located in the beautiful paci c northwest, VCA Battle Ground Animal Hospitals is a project I am quite proud of. is project initially begun in early 2016 before taking a very long hiatus and restarting in late 2019. Because of this I’ve been involved at every level of the project, from schematic design, to drafting work, to project management and construction administration. In the project restart we worked closely with MFA-Architects who lead the shell design. e coordination of a fresh ground up build allowed us to employ very intentional design strategies.

NWVS Linac Addition
While not as complex as the famous particle accelerator in Switzerland which researches anti-matter, is 2,000sqft linear accelerator addition to the Northwest Veterinary Specialists campus, was by far the most complex project I've embarked on. With a 7.5 ton Linear accelerator delivering radiation treatment, e build required a complex concrete vault, with up to 4 feet thick sections, and the requirement for 3” thick lead shielding for any penetration. e design involved in depth coordination with our structural, electrical and mechanical engineers, as well as adherence to a 178 page reference document from the manufacturer, as well as their install team.

El Cajon Animal Shelter
My Team as well as the folks at Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects Worked with e City of El Cajon to develop their new Animal Shelter. While FPBA was well versed in commercial architecture, our team was brought in to lead the design of all the animal spaces, including animal housing, adoption areas, and a treatment area. When it comes to building types, shelters have to manage a high level of abuse, odors, and sound. e design we provided gives a good circulation between the separated public and private areas, and provides an aesthetically pleasing design to the larger challenges we needed to solve.

SF Veterinary Specialists
When it comes to comprehensive animal care, is hospital ticked all the boxes. ey o ered general practice care, Emergency 24hr care, Specialty services such as that of a neurologist or an oncologist, and had the ability for in house imaging (X-ray, MRI & CT). To achieve this we needed to redesign their existing 24 hour hospital and expand it into the neighboring space. e design had to accommodate quirky existing conditions and level changes, as well as plan for signi cant phasing due to a lack of staging area for the contractor, and because of the requirement to remain fully operational during construction. e project was fully permitted with a contractor on board, but for reasons speci c to the client, the project didn’t get constructed.

Thrive Scottsdale
e rive Scottsdale team, was out growing their existing practice, but rather than looking for a new location for them to call home, they decided to expand into the building next door. e project that then occured was the complete renovation of their new 20,000sf aquisition.
e project carries over some of the specialties from the previous space such as oncology, cardiology, nuerology, and internal medicine, as well as 5 new surgery suites; ese functions happen on the second oor. e focus on the rst oor was on triage and ICU, exam rooms, and isolation accomodations.

Miscellaneous Designs
I occasionally took on smaller project opportunities as schedules would allow. ese would usually consist of 3d visualizations, design assistance, or help with products and materials.
As a designer, I believe people bene t from using other creative avenues when possible, because the experiences will o en require problem solving from a di erent frame of reference.
e vinyl wall graphic, Virtual Reality panoramas, material palettes, and the lobby design are a few examples of when I was able to deviate from the typical design process.

VIRTUAL VISUALIZATIONS

CENTRAL VICTORIA: ER TREATMENT
When it comes to collaboration with clients, I’ve found the benefits that come from engaging the client in visualizing the space virtually. Immersive VR allows those outside of the field to understand the space in 3 dimensions rather two dimensional techniques. By being able to involve this type of tool, our teams have been able to identify and solve potential issues that may have come up otherwise. The visualization often yields excitement for the client and the client’s team which I also find to be very beneficial.

MATERIAL PALETTES

One aspect of hospital design that really makes a difference is the selection of materials and finishes. We needed to pick materials that were highly durable, easily maintained, and had a cohesive aesthetic. Having realized the large quantity of materials being specified, I worked with the client to come up with standard material palettes boxes, where materials were nicely organized on stacked boards.
