SIGNED, SEALED AND TIME TO DELIVER! Mike Spivock, Senior Manager Health Promotion Delivery, PSP HQ Ottawa The BALANCE Physical Performance Strategy has now been signed by General Vance (Chief of the Defence Staff) and nationallevel launch activities will begin popping up shortly.

Your PSP team should have received your copies of the Strategy document, as well as the first series of best practice infographics on promoting physical activity.

This is a great time to sit down with your local steering committees, discuss your Fitness Profile Results, have a look at the 2013/2014 HLIS data, maybe even dust off your local Culture of Fitness Reports, and begin thinking about how you can help make your base/wing a more activity friendly place.

Whether it’s looking at policies, physical infrastructure, social norms or leadership by example, it’s important that we ask ourselves how to make the healthy/fit choice the easy choice for the Defence Community.

ICSPP 2020 - ON THE RADAR Jacquie Laframboise, Senior Officer Human Performance, PSP HQ Ottawa Human Performance, DFIT on behalf of the CAF will be leading the organization of the international Congress for Soldier Physical Performance Feb 11-14th, 2020 in Quebec City. Throughout the next year, our team will be working with domestic and international colleagues, internal and external to PSP to create an entertaining, thought provoking and educational experience and include domestic and international scientists and Military. PATROL PATHFINDER PERFORMANCE READINESS PROGRAM Jacquie Laframboise, Senior Officer Human Performance, PSP HQ Ottawa July 2018, Human Performance briefed Canadian Army Advanced Warfare Centre (CAAWC), in Trenton, with the outcome of the 2017 research and recommendations for implementing the Performance Readiness Program for Patrol Pathfinder (PPF) applicants; the intent of the program is to improve the success rate on the qualification course. Historically, the PPF course suffers from a very high attrition rate (up to 70%). A network of base PSP Fitness and Patrol Pathfinders has been created on the Army bases (Gagetown, Shilo, Petawawa, Valcartier, Wainright, and Edmonton) to support the applicants using the readiness progression outlined in the Poster; PPF course draws from army trades including infantry, artillery, engineers, signalers, and medics. The Foundational and Specific PPF physical fitness program is being built within a new dfit.ca platform which will feature the program on an app or web based platform. CLOSE PROTECTION OPERATOR PHYSICAL FITNESS MAINTENANCE TEST (CP PFMT) IS IN MOTION Jacquie Laframboise, Senior Officer Human Performance, PSP HQ Ottawa November 2018, the CFSU(O) fitness team and the Canadian Forces Protection Support Unit (CFPSU) were trained to deliver the CP PFMT. Rachel Griese, who delivers the Close Protection Operator Assessment center (CPOAC) in Borden, was invited to provide her expertise along with our DFIT team to deliver the training. This training ensured that the CP PFMT could be quickly implemented to support operational requirements for CPO deployment preparations in 2018. Only CPO who work at the CFPSU (Ottawa) will be required to meet the CP PFMT standard annually, whereas other CPO (from across the country) deploying will be required to meet the standard for the test as part of the pre-deployment screening. The interim Operations manual is complete and available through DFIT fitness delivery, a final version will follow.

A poster is also being developed to provide a quick ‘how to’ on how to perform the test, with some reference to the rational for the test. In the near future, bases where PSP will be asked to support the CPO deployment requirement, fitness staff will be offered the opportunity to support the CPOAC with Rachel Griese in Borden where they will receive training and will be required to run several tests. Formal training through the National Training center will follow.

PHYSICAL EMPLOYMENT STANDARD CONFERENCE JULY 2018 Jacquie Laframboise, Senior Officer Human Performance, PSP HQ Ottawa July 2018, the Human Performance team participated in the PES 2018 conference in Portsmouth, UK by sharing a broad scope of research and concepts. Our presence and caliber at this international conference set the stage for the ICSPP 2020. FORMEFIT KITS NOVEMBER 2018 UPDATE Stephanie Milne, PMP, IM/IT Project Manager, PSP HQ Ottawa DFIT team completed another successful update on the FORMeFIT kits from Nov 19th – Dec 7th, 2018. In fact this was the largest update so far – a total of 74 FORMeFIT kits. It takes a team…

Updates to look for: 1. Fitness Profile scoring:

a. The scoring table for each FORCE component and the overall incentive thresholds have been adjusted based on the latest available data set to help achieve the appropriate distribution of CAF personnel according to their operational fitness. The intent is to capture 50% of the CAF in the incentive program, with approximately 34% Bronze, 14% Silver, 2% Gold and 0.1% Platinum.

b. Aspects of the Health-related fitness have also changed, the algorithm used to predict VO2max (aerobic capacity) was modified based on data from a more representative sample of the CAF population. In addition, only the ILS component of the FORCE evaluation is used to calculate predicted VO2max as this is the most aerobic component.

Although previous equations had similar accuracy they could provide misleading results for unbalanced fitness particularly on the online calculator where any FORCE performance time can be entered.

c. The 5-year age ranges were all aligned so that CAF personnel in their 30’s, 40’s etc. are compared with peers in the same ½ decade for both operational and health related fitness and within all subsequent platforms for reporting. The age ranges are 0-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-75.

CANNABIS EDUCATION AND AWARENESS UPDATE Orsolya Holthof, Manager Health Promotion Delivery, PSP HQ Ottawa

Leading up to and following the legalization of cannabis in October 2018, Health Promotion teams have been involved in extensive education and awareness activities focused on cannabis and health. Teams are responsible for delivery of Cannabis and Health briefings, Alcohol other Drugs, Gambling and Gaming Awareness workshops for supervisors, and additional activities outside of the classroom. Significant amounts of time were spent on meetings and preparatory work in September. Activities kicked into high gear in the month of October, with a four-fold increase in activities compared to September, most notably Cannabis and Health briefings.

November marked Canada’s National Addictions Awareness Week (26 Nov to 2 Dec 2018), and an unsurprising increase in activities outside of the classroom was observed that month as a result. Although December is typically a quieter month for Health Promotion due to block leave for members, there was an increase in briefings relative to November, in line with the emphasis around safe substance use during the holiday season. Overall, teams have delivered over 200 various briefings, workshops and activities from 1 September to 31 December.

Health Promotion teams will continue to report monthly statistics to PSP. We anticipate continued emphasis on cannabis as we draw closer to the deadline of October 2019 for legalization of edible cannabis, cannabis extracts and cannabis topicals.

GREAT WORK IN THE FIELD VALCARTIER HOSTS THE INTERALLIED CONFEDERATION OF RESERVE OFFICERS (CIOR) MILITARY COMPETITION IN 2018 Each year, the CIOR organizes a military competition to test the infantry skills of reserve forces for NATO countries and peace partners. The 2018 edition of this competition was held in Valcartier from August 5–10th. A total of 120 participants from 13 countries competed in the pentathlon, which involved pistol and rifle shooting, land and water obstacle courses, and an orientation march.

Since planning began, several PSP entities have worked together to help the organizing committee put on the event.

The marketing team helped design the medals, plaques and trophies. The mess, PSP food services and the Centre Castor managed part of the event’s social activities. The Fitness and Facilities departments managed the land and water obstacle courses. They prepared and maintained the land and water obstacle courses, supervised advance training, trained judges and managed results.

During the closing banquet, the Military Competition organizing committee was awarded a prize for the first time in the CIOR’s history. The PSP are proud to have been a part of this historic acknowledgement.

2018 CAF SPORTS DAY Peter Nicol, Sports Policy, Programs & Projects Coordinator, PSP HQ Ottawa The 6th edition of our CAF Sports Day was held on 19 October, 2018. Various sports competitions and activities were organized by local PSP sports sections, independent wings/units and other individual CAF members at 33 CAF bases and 11 OUTCAN locations.

In total, this past year we saw 14979 participants take part in this celebration of sport, which is a slight increase over the 2017 participation numbers. A special mention and kudos should be made for the following locations, who organized great events with exceptional participation numbers: Cold Lake, Halifax, Petawawa, RMC Kingston, Shilo and Trenton.

With the continued success of the event, we look forward to next year’s CAF Sports Day, which, as a result of feedback from the field will take place earlier in the year; it is being planned for September 2019. With your continued support and participation, we are hoping that we will be able to increase the participation numbers at all locations as we celebrate the value of sport together.

SPORTS DAY IN CANADA SHILO STYLE On the 4th Oct 18, as the sun slowly rose across the Prairies, approx. 500 stood at the starting line ready for the start of the 5K run to officially kick off CAF Sports Day in Canada, Shilo style. In true Prairie fashion, mother-nature would not cooperate with us as the day before, she decided to dump a load of snow to make our event more of a challenge. After hoping for a quick melt in the afternoon, the golfing gods must have been off on another course, we had to cancel our golfing event as the snow would not leave. All the other events went on without a hitch. CAF Sports Day in Shilo got started with the 5K run started at 0745hrs with over 500 soldiers kicking the events off. After the run, the floor hockey and volleyball tournaments started. With only a half day to conduct our activities, it was decided a single elimination tournament was the only way to run our event. Floor hockey saw 16 teams and volleyball had 18 teams shoot, jump and score to finally declare winners at noon hour. After three years of having minimal participation for this event (70-80), what a surprise it was to have almost 900 participants.

RUNNING CAMP, MONTRÉAL GARRISON / IV EDITION / FEBRUARY 2019 Jean-François Bernard, FSR Manager, Montréal Garrison, 2 Division Continued success in Montréal! February 2019 marks the launch of Running Camp IV, now with 2 sections. The first section, the pre-camp, involves 8 weeks of weight training. The second section, the camp itself, will start next April. The main goal of this camp is to improve participants’ race times. Participants are serious and have a clear goal: to run a long-distance race by September.

The running camp, led by Julie Gagnon, is in its 4th year. Named Trainer of the Year at last year’s Gala du mérite sportif des Patriotes, Julie is key to the success of the PSP Montréal’s team. She is unquestionably an incredible teacher and trainer, expertly sharing knowledge and encouraging teamwork. She drives the Montréal PSP chapter and continues to raise the bar when it comes to customer service. Loved by all of our clients and respected by her colleagues, Julie is a model of integrity, ethics, professionalism and professional excellence, of whom her NPF and CF peers can be proud. INTROSPECTIVE BEAR – OFFICERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY Rick McKie, Manager Fitness & Sports, Garrison Petawawa On 16 August 2018, a handful of Garrison Petawawa’s PSP staff attended Introspective Bear (IB). Introspective Bear was a Professional Development day for all Officers of 2 CMBG led by the Brigade Commander (Bde Cmd) Col Adair. With great appreciation, we accepted Col Adair’s offer to attend.

Once all units were gathered at the formation point, the Bde Cmd addressed all participants and introduced Jessica Tetlaw (FSI). He asked Jessica to lead the warm-up while educating the Chain of Command on the importance of warming-up properly. Introspective Bear provided our staff the opportunity to build rapport and establish relationships with a majority of the units. The day consisted of running to nine Brigade Units, where the CO’s and soldiers briefed all IB participants on the unit’s capabilities and limitations. In total, the group ran approximately 13.5km.

In addition to building rapport and establishing relationships, our staff had a full day of education that will help us in planning future classes and programming for all of our military members. Each unit has their own unique duties, so it is important for our fitness staff to design unit programs specific enough to meet the needs of each unit. The final run with an unknown distance was led by the Bde Cmd & concluded at the Officer’s Mess where Necole Miller (Fitness Coordinator) and Kyle Wolfer (FSI) led the group through a cool-down with attention to de-regulation before dinner was served.

Overall, Introspective Bear was a very beneficial day for our staff as we were able to build rapport, establish relationship, and gain greater incite on each of the units within the Brigade units at Garrison Petawawa.

CAF SPORT INCREASING COMBAT-READINESS Rick McKie, Manager, Fitness and Sports, Garrison Petawawa There is no denying the link between sport and combat-readiness. Certainly some sports have a more recognizable link than others, such as combative sports. One such combative sport, grappling, covers many fighting disciplines and is defined as “a close fighting technique used to gain a physical advantage such as improving relative position” on an opponent. Examples would include, but are not limited to, Wrestling, Judo and Brazilian Jujitsu.

The Modern Combatives Grappling Championship (MCGC) is the CAF’s perennial combatives exercise that enables CAF personnel to trial their soldier skillset in a sport-like setting. The 6th MCGC that was hosted in Petawawa on 23 June 2018 culminated in a tournament so that all participants had an opportunity to practice their fighting skill-set in a safe yet controlled environment. The event featured the highest level fighters from across the entire CAF, some of whom are already recognized Canadian national and world-level champions.

In turn, the MCGC has influenced the future of Sport in the CAF so significantly that on 13 October 2018, the Ontario Sports Region hosted the first ever Ontario Regional Combatives Grappling Championships. Three bases contributed in sending 45 competitors, which included a significant number of Officer Cadets from the Royal Military College. As mentioned to the Officer Cadets, and all the other competitors during the pre-tournament briefing, they are the future leaders in the CAF and their added participation has led to the accomplishment of two goals: 1. Increased participation of CAF members in sports through the introduction of a new and growing sport: and 2. Enhanced combative skills and warrior mindset, which should help to increase combat-readiness.

The Ontario Regional Championship combined with the MCGC will be two succinct programs mutually benefiting the combatreadiness of Soldiers, Sailors, Aviators and Special Forces personnel in enhancing a military skillset through sport for years to come. Moving forward the challenge is to establish tournaments in all Sporting Regions that would eventually lead to a National Championship.

ARE YOU QUALIFIED YET? Rick McKie, Manager, Fitness and Sports, Garrison Petawawa Although the Ontario Regional Combatives Grappling Championship was the first of its kind within the CAF Sports Program, PSP has been involved with supporting such events as they grow. During the last Modern Combatives Grappling Championship (MCGC) hosted in Petawawa, three PSP staff (Adrienne Lema and Danielle Anderson from Edmonton, along with Matthew Garrett from Gagetown) participated. The plan was for them to become qualified as officials in order for their bases to prepare to have competitions similar to the MCGC and potentially CAF Regional Competitions at their locations.

AN IMPORTANT AND BENEFICIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITY UNIT FITNESS AND SPORTS OFFICER (UFSO) Every fall the National PSP Training Centre (NTC) hosts the Unit Fitness and Sports Officer (UFSO) course for up to 20 military personnel.

This course is designed to educate and enable military personal who have been delegated the responsibility to organize a unit fitness and sports plan. The role of the Unit Fitness and Sports Officer is common across many CAF units; however, most in that role are left to their own devices to determine how to carry out the task. The UFSO course is the perfect answer to that problem by showing students the value of aligning a fitness and sports program with the units annual operations and training schedule; catering a fitness program to the physically demanding tasks of a unit; and modifying the ideal plan to suit the real people posted within their unit.

During the course students learn the importance of aligning fitness goals with mission goals and why it is important to monitor progress and evolve the plan as it is required. UFSO’s are perfectly situated to monitor the effect of the program on participants, and recognize the requirement for change when the evidence supports it. Furthermore, students learn about the breadth and depth of services PSP offers at each base, and look to include them in the plan where it makes sense. This includes health promotion courses, fitness clinics, and the use of PSP for direct PT session delivery. Following the course all UFSO graduates are connected with the Fitness Coordinator from their base to begin the ideal collaboration between fitness subject matter experts and the experts on unit operations. A graduate of the 2016 UFSO

course, Sgt Stephane Lajeunnesse describes what he gained from this course: “The UFSO course provided me with the knowledge and tools to look at our current fitness program and extend it beyond the “workout of the day”. Now our unit has clear fitness goals with exercises that are relevant to everyone’s needs; also enabling our members to track their performance and see their improvements throughout the training cycle. I believe the most critical take away from the course was that we can all reduce injuries both during PT and in our day to day lives, as a well-designed fitness program will be able to identify and focus on performing regular tasks in a safer and more effective manner.”

PSP Staff can gain insight on the UFSO course through their Fitness and Sports Level 2 course, as well as the Fitness Coordinator course. NTC Instructors walk PSP staff through the process of applying fitness programming methods to the unique and challenging military population.

NORTH BAY - HEALTHY BODY CHALLENGE Lucas DeMarco, Health Promotion Manager, North Bay 21 Squadron teamed up with PSP Health Promotion to complete a “Healthy Body Challenge” that took place over 65 days, in recognition of the Squadron’s 65th anniversary. With the goal of increasing motivation among personnel for achieving healthy behavior changes, the Unit Challenge was designed to be more inclusive than traditional “Weight Loss” challenges.

This challenge incorporated a multitude of individual and team body composition categories to include weight loss, waist circumference, fat lost, muscle gained and participation. Squadron Leadership awarded prizes to winning individuals and teams (flights).

The combined results below show the hard work of all 27 participants who completed the challenge.

After 65 Days 21 Squadron combined has; •

Lost 73.5 cm of their waists.

•

Lost 76.0 Pounds.

•

Lost an average of 0.62% Body Fat.

•

Gained an average of 0.76 % Skeletal Muscle

PERSPECTIVE ON PERSONAL FITNESS

Ever since I started working in the health and fitness industry, I’ve paid a lot of attention to my own physical fitness. I’ve always kept in shape by varying the physical activity that I do. I believe that my credibility in my career is largely due to the fact that I have stayed in shape. When you’re 20, your youth helps you perform. But as you age, keeping fit requires more and more effort. People see me as an “attainable goal” because I’m like them. I’m a 36-year-old mother of 2, I’m not a competitive athlete, I exercise for fun and to stay healthy and I’ve found a balance in my life that lets me stay in shape. As a result, people take me seriously; they want to take my advice, meaning that they’re granting me the privilege of making a difference in their lives.

Last December, we did our FORCE evaluation and I reached Platinum. I have reached this level every year since FORCE began. Our members appreciate the fact that we have to pass the FORCE evaluation too. What’s more, us reaching a high level shows them that it’s possible. Conversely, the fitness training assistants love seeing the team from headquarters do the evaluation with us. Seeing them give their all in every task shows that they’re involved, mindful and empathetic. It was an excellent challenge that brought us together as a team.

CFSU(O) NOT ABOUT TO TAKE IT EASY ON HQ Denis Couturier, Snr (Old) Fitness Manager

On 14 December 2018, the CFSU(O) staff and DFIT HQ personnel performed their yearly FORCE evaluation. It was a great event and the CFSU(O) personnel were ready and eager of this occasion to “Show”/”Beat” the “corporate” echelon on the FORCE evaluation.

They, of course, did not disappoint but the DFIT team was as eager to outperform the CFSU(O) team. We were not only impressed by their fitness levels but also motivated to see their enthusiasm. It certainly highlighted the passion of our staff, their professionalism and their commitment to lead from the front. The final tally ended up an average score of Silver (358.9) on the Fitness Profile for the DFIT team while the CSFU(O) team ended with Silver (381.1). Although I would call this a tie, I am sure that that CFSU(O) would be comfortable saying that they were only 2 points from Gold and that we were outmatched, out skilled and ultimately out performed.

Unfortunately for DFIT, computer skills do not translate well to win this event!

COMMANDER CANSOFCOM TEAM COMMENDATION Comd CANSOFCOM presented the HP R&D Team, Mr. Conor MacDonald, Mr. Mark Carlson, Ms. Anna Smyth and Ms. Sylvie Fortier with the “Commander CANSOFCOM Team Commendation”. The citation reads: “The Human Performance Research and Development Team has completed outstanding research for the development and implementation of several physical fitness standards for CANSOFCOM. The development of Special Operations Insertion/Extraction (SOIE) course physical fitness prerequisites and physical fitness screening evaluations significantly reduced the injury rate on SOIE courses. The team’s research and development further enhanced the standards requisite of SF Op and CBRN Op occupations. The team’s ability to translate scientific data to meet specific operational needs is in the finest tradition of the service and has brought recognition and esteem to CANSOFCOM”

CDS COMMENDATION AWARDS CEREMONY “From September 2015 to May 2017, Ms. Mattie collaborated with Canadian Forces Health Services Group and the Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services to develop the Special Operations Mental Agility (SOMA) program, a customized resiliency and mental skills training package. Her ability to deliver technical concepts in simple and relatable language ensured the universal acceptance and adoption of SOMA within Canadian Special Operations Forces Command. Ms. Mattie’s outstanding service in the mental performance domain has brought great credit to the Canadian Armed Forces.

MEET TEAM DFIT HQ OTTAWA How’s the new guy? Bruce Ploughman, retired B Gen, VP PSP. You may or may not have had a chance to read our new Sr VP PSP’s bio, I’m sure you can find the link on the web but don’t bother reading it. As impressive as his 30 years in uniform serving both in command (Detachment, Flight, Squadron, Wing, Division) and operational positions I’ll provide you the unfiltered “what you should know” about him from a Sport, Fitness and Health Promotion perspective along with some advice for his upcoming visit to your base/wing.

WHAT THE BIO SAYS: Born in Newfoundland. oW hat you want to know: While he’s moved around during his 30 years in uniform he is a Newfie through and through and always happy to exchange Newfoundland stories. o A dvice for his visit to your base/wing: If you’re from Newfoundland, have been to Newfoundland or have even thought about Newfoundland at one point or another simply bring it up during his visit and enjoy the ride….the long ride.

WHAT THE BIO SAYS: Bachelor in Physical Education, Education and Science from Memorial University. oW hat you want to know: In the middle of flying Sea King’s and NATO postings he has kept up to date in our field. So much so that he’s been bombarding senior budget officers on the perils of not fully supporting physical activity, sport and health promotion activities in the CAF by referencing research studies on the impact of physical education reductions in the school system. o A dvice for his visit to your base/wing: Don’t be afraid to get into detailed Sport, Health Promotion or Fitness program areas and challenges during visits…it always helps to have the data/references/evidence to support your position.

WHAT THE BIO SAYS: Is an avid cyclist, runner and physical activity enthusiast. oW hat you want to know: Yes and Yes, he drinks the PSP “Kool Aid”, and while his choice in workout clothing is a tad too flashy for my liking he definitely practices what we preach. He rides his bike to work year round, is/was a regular competitor at the National Running, Swimming, Triathlon championships along with the Army Run, and in December he joined the DFIT Team and CFSU(O) PSP Team to complete our FORCE Test. o A dvice for his visit to your base/wing: Schedule a time for him to participate in a Fitness Class, sit in on an HP session, or visit a sporting event. It doesn’t matter the type just that he gets a chance to experience PSP in action.

TEAM BUILDING AT DFIT HQ Quarterly 2018/2019 DFIT HQ met as a team to connect for some physical activity and professional development. Jan 31st 2019, Sports hosted a snowshoeing day in Gatineau Park, lunch, and guest speaker LCol Rhonda Crew who shared her experiences with the Invictus Games 2018, her journey through Resilience and Perseverance and an example of recovery through sport for an improved mental and physical well-being.
