the shadows of hardship. At just 12 years old, he faced the heart-wrenching loss of his mother, leaving him to navigate the challenges of life with an alcoholic father. His youth was marked by frequent moves between older siblings as he sought stability.
Yet, adversity only fueled his determination. After graduating high school, William answered the call of duty, proudly serving as a Marine, embodying resilience and commitment.

My favorite part has been meeting these deserving young men and women. It is truly one of the greatest honors of my life to be a part of the selection process. I love hearing their success stories and knowing my late uncle played a part. Year after year, his legacy lives on through this fund that he dreamed of. It's a beautiful thing.
Driven by a strong work ethic and a belief in the transformative power of education, he worked tirelessly to put himself through school. His ambition paid off, and he became a self-made millionaire through his ventures in land development in Louisville.
Before his untimely passing at the age of 67, William made a profound decision—to leave his fortune to establish a Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation of Louisville. He confided in his niece, Joy Steinrock, expressing his desire to
uplift young people who faced challenges just like he once did. Today, Joy passionately oversees her uncle’s legacy fund, cherishing
Although we offer many different types of funds that can be customized to meet a variety of charitable goals, in this year’s annual report, we wanted to highlight our Scholarship Program. Establishing a Scholarship Fund is an excellent way for donors to support individual students pursuing higher education and make a significant difference in their ability to achieve success.
Life has a way of presenting challenges that test our resilience and determination. For Jonah Belance, Community Foundation of Louisville scholarship recipient, the journey to achieving his dreams was met with many obstacles. His family immigrated to escape difficulties in Haiti but encountered hardships in the U.S.,
including his parents' divorce, health issues within his family, and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these struggles, Jonah remained determined to succeed.
As the pandemic subsided and his mom regained her health, Jonah returned to school in his junior year renewed with vigor, seeking resources and support from his teachers and counselors. His passion to serve the Louisville community through local justice initiatives led Jonah and his fellow students to form an organization called Justice Now.
In addition to his community involvement, Jonah became president of both the Black Student Union and senior class at
Southern High School and took up many other leadership roles. Thanks to guidance from Ms. Danita Lewis, his high school counselor, Jonah applied for the Foundation's General Scholarship Application and was awarded multiple scholarships, which helped him to pursue his educational goals.
Now a freshman at the University of Louisville, Jonah continues to excel academically in the medical field while actively serving his community. Jonah’s testament of determination through adversity provides inspiration and hope for students everywhere, showing that opportunities come to you/arise when you express who you truly are.
