Colin Sutton was a Senior Investigating Officer in the Metropolitan Police from January 2003 to January 2011, leading more than thirty successful murder investigations, notably the Levi Bellfield case and the successful re-investigation of the seventeen-year reign of terror of the 'Nightstalker' Delroy Grant.

Sutton was educated at King Edward VI School, Stratfordupon-Avon. In 1957 he joined Warwickshire Constabulary as a Constable. He was promoted Sergeant in 1964, Inspector in 1966, Chief Inspector in 1970, Superintendent in 1972, and Chief Superintendent in 1974.

In 1983, Sutton moved to the Metropolitan Police as a Deputy Assistant Commissioner. He was appointed Assistant Commissioner "B" (Traffic) in 1984.[1] He was to be the last officer to hold this post, as the Metropolitan Police was reorganised in 1985.

He then became Assistant Commissioner Management Support, and in 1987 was appointed Assistant Commissioner Personnel and Training.

He was awarded the Queen's Police Medal (QPM) in 1985. In 1988 he became Director of the Police Requirements Support Unit at the Home Office and in 1991 Director of the Police Scientific Development Branch, also at the Home Office. He retired in 1993.

Anna Vasilyevna Chapman (Russian: А́нна Васи́ льевна Ча́пман; born Anna Vasilyevna Kushchenko on 23 February 1982) is a Russian intelligence agent, media personality and model who was arrested in the United States on 27 June 2010 as part of the Illegals Program spy ring.

At the time of her arrest, she was accused of espionage on behalf of the Russian Federation's external intelligence agency, the Sluzhba vneshney razvedki (SVR).

She had previously gained British citizenship through marriage, which she used to gain residency in the U.S. Chapman pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government.

She and the other Russians were deported to Russia on 8 July 2010, as part of the 2010 Russia–U.S. prisoner swap. Learning that Chapman had wanted to return to the United Kingdom, the UK government revoked her British citizenship and excluded her from the country.

The Most Dangerous Women on Earth Since her return to Russia, Chapman has worked in a variety of fields, including for the government as head of a youth council, a catwalk model in Russian fashion shows, and running a television series.

Abandoned Prisons

The Wyoming State Penitentiary is a historic and current prison in Rawlins, Carbon County, Wyoming, which has operated from 1901. It moved within Rawlins to a new location in 1981. In 2018, it is a Wyoming Department of Corrections state maximumsecurity prison for men.

The prison also used different execution methods.. The first two executions were carried out using the “traveling” Julien Gallows which were used to hang Tom Horn in Cheyenne in 1903. In 1916, the penitentiary completed the addition of a “death house” which consisted of six cells to house inmates on death row, and a unique indoor version of the Julien Gallows.

The building also housed the gas chamber when it was chosen to replace hanging as Wyoming’s execution method of choice in 1936. Ultimately 14 death sentences were carried out; nine men were hanged, and five were executed in the gas chamber by the use of hydrocyanic acid gas.

a federal law was passed to prohibit the sale and transportation of prison manufactured goods from one state to another, which resulted in the loss of significant revenue when the factory closed. In 1935, the factory began operating as a woolen mill which won the “Navy E” in 1942 for the superior quality blankets produced by the prison for the military during World War II. In 1949 the prison changed production one last time, producing license plates until the penitentiary closed in 1981.

The eighty year history of Wyoming’s first state penitentiary, now known as the Wyoming Frontier Prison, is as colorful and elaborate as the plot of a classic western movie. The cornerstone of the prison was laid in 1888, but due to funding issues and Wyoming’s notorious weather, the doors wouldn’t open for thirteen years.

In December of 1901, the prison opened and consisted of 104 cells (Cell Block A), no electricity or running water, and very inadequate heating.

After serving the state for eighty years, the prison closed its doors, and sat abandoned until 1987 when a low budget movie titled “Prison” was filmed on location. The movie was one of Viggo Mortensen’s first and featured several other well known actors.

Significant damage was done to the prison grounds during filming because it had yet to be considered a historic site. In 1988, a joint powers board assumed ownership of the penitentiary, dubbed it The Wyoming Frontier Prison, and established it as a museum.

The Wyoming Frontier Prison has since been listed on The National Registry of Historic Places, and offers tours to approximately 15,000 visitors annually.

THE NEW FACE OF CRIME

We have seen a significant growth in cyber criminality in the form of high-profile ransomware campaigns over the last year. Breaches leaked personal data on a massive scale leaving victims vulnerable to fraud, while lives were put at risk and services damaged by the WannaCr ransomware campaign that affected the NHS and other Companies in since the Pandemic.

Crime, they say, doesn’t pay. Yet every year, billions of pounds are lost to cyber criminals, and the chances of recovering anything are often slim. So, it would seem, crime does, in fact, pay quite a lot of money, quite a lot of the time, which is no doubt why so many people are engaged in it.

But that doesn’t mean the authorities are completely powerless. Identifying and capturing cyber criminals is often difficult and time consuming, but it happens all the time.

In his 2020 SonicWall Threat Report Bill Conner stated that "For the cybercriminals, it’s more lawless than ever. Despite the best intentions of government agencies, law enforcement and oversight groups, the current cyber threat landscape is more agile than ever before."

To celebrate the successes of law enforcement over cyber criminals in recent year, we’ve put together a list of notorious cyber criminals, who were caught and prosecuted.

Kevin Mitnick Who is Kevin Mitnik?

Arguably the most famous cyber criminal of all time, Kevin Mitnick, unlike many black hat hackers, wasn’t motivated by profit. Instead, he committed multiple computer and communications crimes just for the sheer hell of it. From the tender of age of 12, he learned the power of social engineering, convincing a bus driver to tell him where to buy the special punch that was used to mark transfers, and then using it to mark blank transfers he dug out of station bins – thereby getting free bus travel all over Los Angeles. He also used social engineering and phone phreaking to explore the phone networks of the day, getting free long-distance calls and access to secret information.

What did Kevin Mitnik do?

The social engineering and phone phreaking were just the start of things to come for Mitnick. It was when he started gaining unauthorised access to computer networks that he really got into trouble. In 1989, he was sentenced to a year in prison, followed by three years’ probation, for hacking into computers at Digital Equipment Corp. and stealing $1 million of software. While on release, he hacked into voicemail computers at Pacific Bell, and an arrest warrant was issued. But rather than go quietly, Mitnick went on the run for two and a half years, before eventually being arrested in 1995. Yet it wasn’t until 1999 that he pleaded guilty to wire fraud, possession of unauthorised devices and unauthorised access to a federal computer, among other things.

How Long was Kevin Mitnik Sentenced To? 46 months, plus another 22 months for violating his 1989 parole. He served a total of five years in prison – four and a half of which were served pre-trial. He also spent eight months in solitary confinement, because law enforcement officials convinced a judge that Mitnick could launch nuclear missiles by whistling down the phone.

Where is Kevin Mitnik Now? After being released in 2000, Mitnick was banned from using computers and other communications technology, but he appealed against that and won. Today, he’s turned legit and makes a living as a cyber security expert, as head of Mitnick Security Consulting LLC. He also, controversially, started selling security exploits.

Because the distinction between nation states and criminal groups is increasingly blurred, cyber crime attribution is sometimes difficult. Many Russian-speaking cyber groups are threatening UK interests, but home-grown cyber criminals are becoming more sophisticated and therefore a rising threat. Although young criminals are often driven by peer kudos rather than financial reward, organised UK cyber crime groups are motivated by profit.

Cyber criminals seek to exploit human or security vulnerabilities in order to steal passwords, data or money directly. The most common cyber threats include: Hacking - including of social media and email passwords Phishing - bogus emails asking for security information and personal details Malicious software – including ransomware through which criminals hijack files and hold them to ransom Distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks against websites – often accompanied by extortion The scale and complexity of cyber attacks is wide ranging. 'Off the shelf' tools mean that less technically proficient criminals are now able to commit cyber crime, and do so as awareness of the potential profits becomes more widespread. The evolving technical capabilities of malware means evolving harm as well as facilitating new crimes, such as the cryptomining malware which attacks digital currencies like Bitcoin.

Cyber attacks are financially devastating and disrupting and upsetting to people and businesses. We know that there is significant under-reporting, although the new General Data Protection Regulation is likely to prompt a better picture of scale.

Currently the level of sentencing at court is not commensurate with the seriousness of attacks, and this is an area which is ripe for consideration.

We focus on critical cyber incidents as well as longer-term activity against the criminals and the services on which they depend. We work closely with UK police, regional organised crime units, and partners in international law enforcement such as Europol, the FBI and the US Secret Service to share intelligence and coordinate action.

We have also developed close and effective partnerships with private industry to share information and technical expertise.

As well as disrupting the current generation of cyber criminals we also want to prevent young people from slipping into cyber crime. Our #CyberChoices campaign encouraged parents of young people with cyber skills to talk to them about their ambitions and the opportunities to use their skills positively.

We also work with partners such as the National Cyber Security Centre, Get Safe Online and Cyber Aware to promote ways for the public and businesses to protect themselves online.

Most cyber attacks could be prevented by taking these basic security steps: Choose strong passwords and don’t reuse them for multiple logins Install security software such as anti-virus and two-factor authentication. This kind of software is often available for free.

I Just Killed My Dad is a 3-episode series that Netflix describes thus. “I Just Killed My Dad is an unprecedented documentary series, which tells the unbelievable, neverbeen-told-before true story of the Templet family.

Does Anthony think he deserves to be in jail? No, he tells the camera at one point, “because I didn’t do anything wrong.”

Nevertheless, he’s still visibly traumatized by the event at the core of this Netflix release, as you can imagine.
