An Academic Mixed Use High-Rise Project

Location - 319 Lower North Water St, Chicago, IL 60611 Duration - 10 Weeks Type - Tower Professor - Matt Miller Year - 3rd - 4th

Situated on a prime waterfront property, the project places a premium on views and public interaction. The ground level is strategically set back from the water’s edge, creating an inviting outdoor space for public use on several levels of the project. There is a fountain garden at the water’s edge with ample seating and foliage for a smooth transition from site to structure, then a landscaped staircase used as an occupiable transition space, and lastly a large public courtyard that has a direct tunnel passthrough to E North Water Street.

In the taller western residential tower, residents enjoy a lavish lifestyle with a 2,000-square-foot gym and spa, private event spaces, and convenient facilities like an office lounge, bicycle storage, and on-site leasing office. Living options include studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and 2-bed loft apartments. The shorter eastern tower houses hotel space and office access on the 2nd to 4th floors. Above, the hotel section on the 5th floor to the top provides stunning views of the Chicago River and skyline.

An Academic Service Project

Our project envisions a versatile and visitor-centric facility, thoughtfully designed to harmonize with nature and the needs of the building occupants. We prioritize a grand open floor plan with separate wings for three main programs: there is the lounge in the center, the exhibit space and vending commons to the left, and staff offices to the right. In this tourist-focused center, the interaction between our staff and the public is paramount, ensuring engaging and informative experiences while providing a private working area.

Sustainability is central to our ethos, reflected in the use of eco-friendly materials and a commitment to minimizing light pollution. The facility encourages recreational exploration and relaxation with a natural playscape, an education planting area, and a thoughtfully designed exhibition space, all set against a backdrop of breathtaking views.

An Academic Pavilion Project

Location - Niobrara State Park, Niobrara, NE, 68760 Duration - 6 Weeks Type - Pavillion Group Members - Sarah Cope (LA) Professor - Sarah Karle, Michael Harpster Year - 4th

This project examines the necessary functions of a camping pavilion and user experience when using the space. Sustainability was a leading design principle in this project exploring both material usage, construction, and site disturbance. For these reasons, a monolithic CLT stilted structure was chosen.

Through material research, CLT was chosen for a variety of reasons, namely its ability to be constructed off-site and transported with only one truck. The speed at which these structures can be constructed which effectively reduced emissions from construction, and the attempt at becoming the most environmentally friendly structure possible.

The use of CLT for this pavilion also provides a cohesive and non-intrusive composition to the site. By harmonizing with the natural elements already existing on the site, this pavilion situates itself into the site seamlessly.

Structurally, the most notable feature of this pavilion are the stilts that it is constructed on. This design decision was made for two reasons. The first is to elevate the pavilion above the tree canopy to highlight the views of the confluence of the Niobrara and Missouri Rivers but more importantly, it is intentionally done to reduce the amount of excavation and infill needed at the site. This decision will effectively reduce destruction to the surrounding site contextcas the holes will only need to accommodate a 6”x6”x2’ concrete pile.

The pavilion is heavily inspired by the Adirondack shelter, with its open design and large shed-shaped form, as well as precedent projects from Studio Sean Canty and MOS. Situated on the trail system of Niobrara State Park, the entry sequence is a gradual curving trail system leading to an ADA-accessible ramp. Inside it includes a small program consisting of an observation deck, a hammock camping tie-up, and a built-in seating area if no hammocks are available.

An Academic Restaurant and Residency Project

Location - N 21st & O Lincoln, Nebraska Duration - 10 Weeks Type - Resturant Group Members - Isaac Alvarado (A) Professor - Zac Porter Year - 2nd

This downtown Lincoln, Nebraska project transforms the oncevacant lot on North 21st and O Street into an extraordinary destination eatery, aiming to provide an unforgettable experience for patrons. Emphasizing the interaction between patrons and chefs, extensive research highlighted the isolated nature of restaurant-goers in the waiting and dining phases, and general interactions between groups.

To break this norm, the design focuses on reshaping the patron experience. Upon entry, during the waiting process, and during the meal interaction is at the highest priority.

This design aims to transform the dining experience in downtown Lincoln, fostering a sense of community, comfort, and culinary spectacle. The Project challenges conventional norms, providing a unique destination eatery that combines architectural innovation with a reimagined communal dining experience.

Addressing the individual experience, patrons are intentionally seated lower than ground level for two reasons. Firstly, aligning eyes with a continuous void in a feature wall reveals the Showcase Kitchen, where chefs showcase their culinary artistry. Comprising 9,000 undulating dimensional lumber strips connected to a frosted wall, this feature builds suspense as patrons see chefs’ silhouettes and hands. Once plated, meals are presented by elevated chefs who share their backgrounds and collectively describe the dishes, creating a visual prominence over the crowd

The secondary feature of this project was to incorporate living quarters for each chef for one month during a residency contract. In this design, chefs have fully separate living quarters on the second floor of the building.

With such a high focus on connectivity and facilitating discourse between patrons on the first floor, my professor, Zac Porter, had offered the idea to “carry that same ethos upstairs.” With that comment being made, the design concepts used on the second floor sought to create a similar discourse as the first floor. The floor plan of this space was strategically sized to provide more square footage for common areas. These common areas include a large indoor and outdoor theater area, secondary activities such as shuffleboard, ping pong tables, and a pool table as well. Along the back wall is a co-op kitchen which forces the chefs to cook together. This is the space where they can generate a cohesive workflow among themselves that will benefit them during the working nights. Each chef is provided with private living quarters for privacy with a kitchenette for their own private or extra storage.

A Furniture Restoration Project

This project was one of passion for me. I’ve always been interested in furniture design and the craft that goes into each design. The stool pictured here is a 1990’s Magis Lyra stool from Italy I purchased from an online reseller. When I purchased the stool the laminated birch seat was chipping, the legs were scratched, and there was an uneven cut through the front of the stool where the original backing was once connected.

Starting with the disassembly, I sanded the old veneer to a bare face and was ready to address the chips in the wood. My best assumption is that from the age of the wood, the back of the stool would likely have been broken, and a previous owner used a jig saw to remove it, leaving uneven edges and splintered sides through the front of the stool. I used belt sanders and hand sanding to bring back a smooth edge. Any large pockets or gashes were either glued and lamped together or filled with wood filler and sanded again. For the legs, buff and polish were all needed to return them to their true beauty. After the blemishes were addressed, a simple oil stain was applied for longevity.

This stool sits in my home’s entryway, and I use it every day.

An Academic Design Research Project

This research is rooted in experimental inquiry, initially concentrating on lighting techniques within indoor spaces and subsequently extending its focus to explore the influence of lighting on emotional responses within these environments. The study establishes a foundational understanding of the intricate interplay between lighting techniques and materials. To operationalize our research, experiments were conducted with willing participants, employing a method where the participant’s head was surrounded in a uniformly textured white box, exposing them to a specific color. The three chosen colors—Blue, Red, and a control color, White—served as variables.

Participants were then prompted to articulate their emotional responses and reminiscent thoughts and observed changes in emotions during the transitions between colors. This approach provides valuable insights into the relationship between lighting, materials, and emotional experiences in indoor environments.
