love, actually

Jessica Ullrich Reporter She walked up to the door of her friend Niki Grachanen’s house. Ringing the doorbell, she was welcomed inside where she noticed a boy she was unfamiliar with across the room. They introduced themselves. She thought nothing of it. It was merely her friend’s other friend. He attempted to make conversation. She attempted to act friendly. But they were only acquaintances, and in the back of her mind, she couldn’t help but think he was a bit strange. This was, in fact, only the summer before eighth grade. Boys were finally devoid of their cootie infestations, but most girls weren’t yet in desperate boy-seeking mode. They all said their goodbyes, and he and she went home. She thought it was the end of that story. Little did she know that one Facebook message, one phone number exchange, one class together and four more months would not only keep their story going, but provide a major plot twist in the definition of their relationship. Sophomores Bailey Thomas and Euan Dempster have been together since they began dating on Dec. 13, 2011, approximately four months after that first meeting in eighth grade.

Two years and one month. And they’re still going strong. Within these two years, their dates have included: Dempster’s first trip to the Houston Rodeo, the acclaimed eighth grade dance at Hamilton Middle School and, Thomas’ personal favorite, Dempster’s homecoming proposal in the form of approximately 100 candles spelling out “H-C?” on her driveway. “I was so surprised. I was not expecting it at all. It was so adorable,” Thomas said. Dempster and Thomas’ relationship began in middle school and although relationships surviving from junior high to senior high are rare, seniors Erin Hamilton and Chris Hawkins also prove they remain possible. Hawkins and Hamilton are approaching four and a half years together after meeting through school and beginning their relationship in eighth grade. According to Hawkins, the key to their success is staying faithful and being honest. Hamilton believes trust and friendship are also key in maintaining a healthy relationship. > see page 12 & 13
