Message from Our Superintendent Tomorrow the doors will open and then close for the final time in 2017 for students and staff of Chagrin Falls Schools. The holiday season provides many opportunities...an opportunity to spend time with family and friends, an opportunity to give and receive, and maybe most importantly, an opportunity to reflect and cast a vision for the year to come. There was much accomplished and much to be thankful for in 2017. This will be remembered as a pivotal year in the history of our school district as four years of conversation and planning resulted in 66% of our community supporting a levy campaign that affords the opportunity to create a modern educational space for students in grades 4-6 and a community facility for utilization by our art partners. This will be a historic project in many ways locally, but it also will be the first school project supported at the state level through the biennium capital improvement budget due to the hard work and advocacy of school and community representatives. The district has been working diligently since this passage on design development. This week, there will be a visible sign of progress as the exterior demolition will begin.

Although some of the building will fall, the history and tradition of this historic school site will be retained.

Additionally, we are in year four of a strategic plan focused on better personalizing the educational experience of students in our district. A great deal of this work led to recognition at the state and national level this year. The district was named as one of 14 Google Reference Schools nationally for achieving exemplary integration of technology throughout the district. Chagrin Falls High School was one of 447 schools in the United States and Canada recently named to the AP Honor Roll. This is the second consecutive year for this recognition.

Finally, in October the district was named by the Ohio

Association of Gifted Children (OAGC) as a Promising Practice School District. These are just a few of the accolades that indicate the successful implementation of our plan over the last four years.

In 2001, Jim Collins released what would become a national best seller entitled “Good to Great.� In this work, he identified "good" as the greatest enemy or limiting factor for organizations in their quest for greatness. We are a school and community that values continued growth and improvement. Although there is much to be proud of as we reflect on our successes and progress as a school district, we must identify gaps and areas for continuous improvement as we move forward. Therefore, this spring the district will work hard to engage our stakeholders in defining the future of our school district. This will begin in January as the district is engaging in an independent audit on key factors of effective schools.

This will include focus groups, site visits, data analysis, surveys and instructional observations. Additionally, we will utilize a web-based solution to engage our broader community in a conversation about the future of our school district. All of this information will drive a focused plan for the district moving forward.

We are extremely thankful to work in a community that supports and values public education and we do not take this for granted. It is our goal to provide a rigorous educational experience that maximizes the potential of each of our students and reflects the values of our community. We look forward to the work ahead! A Review of the December Board of Education Meetings “What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.” T.S. Eliot T.S. Eliot’s thoughts on beginnings and endings capture the spirit of the work of the Chagrin Falls Board of Education in December as we recognize the contributions of two outgoing board members, Michael Hogan and Rob Weber, and begin the process of welcoming two new board members, Greg Kanzinger and Phil Rankin.

At the end of 2017, Michael Hogan will complete his 6th year serving as a school board member and Rob Weber will complete 9½ years of board service. During their time on the board, both have served the district in numerous capacities including board liaisons to numerous organizations, various district committees and levy campaign committees. One of the benefits of a five-member board is the district benefits from the contribution of varied skillsets and experience.

Michael often leveraged his public agency experience to thoughtfully advocate for students with disabilities while Rob’s background in finance and business were an asset in financial forecasting, budgeting, and cost containment discussions and decisions. The commitment of the board member role brings great responsibility and at times personal sacrifice. Kathryn Garvey, Mary Kay O’Toole and I along with the administrative team, extend many thanks to Michael and Rob for giving so generously of their time and talents in support of our schools for many years.

Preparations have begun for the January Board Organizational Meeting on January 10, when Greg Kanzinger and Phil Rankin take the oath of office and begin their first terms as school board members alongside board member Mary Kay O’Toole, who is returning for her 9th year of service on the board.

Through transition meetings and conversations around individual skillsets and areas of interest, we begin building our new team with the shared goal of providing the district with the strongest board possible.

Phil Rankin will join the board after most recently serving on the Facilities Committee and the 2017 school levy campaign. Phil also has volunteered with the Chagrin Valley Jaycees, Dad's Club, CAA and Cub Scouts Pack 177. Phil received an M.B.A. in Economics, Finance, and Operations Management from the University of Chicago and a B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Iowa. He currently owns and operates three businesses: Special Metal Stamping, Even Mix™, and American Assembly Tools. Phil and his wife, Kristen, have lived in the Village of Chagrin Falls for 11 years and have three children in the Chagrin schools: Elizabeth, Class of 2023; Julianne, Class of 2023; and John, Class of 2026.

Greg Kanzinger will join the board after many years working with the district while leading the Dads' Club.

Greg also has served on the school’s Technology Committee and Superintendent’s Inner Council. Greg majored in math at Kenyon College. He has worked in the software industry for the past 22 years and currently serves as the Director of Performance and Builds for TMW Systems Inc. in Mayfield Heights. Greg and his wife, Jean, have lived in South Russell for 19 years and have two children in the Chagrin schools: Ginny, Class of 2020 and Marie, Class of 2023.

Chagrin Falls Exempted Village Schools “Treasurer’s Corner”

Table 1 compares actual monthly receipts to the monthly estimates and to prior fiscal year actual receipts. General fund revenues spike in the 1st and 3rd quarter as a result of real estate tax collections.

Table 3 compares estimated and actual monthly ending cash balances demonstrating compliance with Board of Education cash balance policies.

Table 2 compares actual monthly expenditures to monthly estimates and to prior fiscal year actual expenditures. Expenses are typically fairly consistent throughout the fiscal year.

Table 4 is a cash flow summary comparing revenues to expenditures each month.

THE FIFTH POPCORN BALL DROP Calling all Chagrin Tiger Families! You are invited to the Fifth Annual Chagrin Falls Popcorn Drop on the Chagrin Falls Triangle on New Year’s Eve. This year there is a new version of the Giant Popcorn Ball topping out at 100 lbs. It will be slowly dropped at midnight to bring in the New Year! At midnight, there will be 200 popcorn balls launched into the crowd via Rob Schwind’s Popcorn Ball Bazookas. Retired Police Chief Jim Brosius will fire off the village cannon ringing in the New Year 2018. The Chagrin Falls Township Hall will be open for cookies and cocoa from 10:30 pm to 11:45 pm. This is a fun way to bring in the New Year and hope that you can attend. Happy New Year!

Chagrin Falls Schools Cafe Time with the Superintendent Robert Hunt, Superintendent of Chagrin Falls Schools, has scheduled a series of drop-in meetings throughout the school year for parents and community members to say hello and learn about what’s happening in the schools and district.

The second “Cafe Time with the Superintendent” was held Friday, December 15 from 9-10 am in the new Heinen’s Cafe in Chagrin Falls Village.

Future meeting dates are February 23, March 9, April 6, and May 4.

Residents are welcome to come and go as their schedule permits during each 60-minute discussion.

Bring your thoughts, questions, and suggestions and enjoy one-on-one time with Superintendent Hunt.

Chagrin Falls Schools Placed on the College Board’s 8th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for Significant Gains in Student Success Chagrin Falls Schools is one of 447 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 8th Annual AP® District Honor Roll. To be included on the Honor Roll, Chagrin Falls High School had to, since 2015, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP. The district also earned placement as one of 433 school districts on the 7th Annual AP District Honor Roll in 2016. It is rare for districts to earn placement on the AP District Honor Roll for multiple years in a row.

"We are committed to continually evaluating and improving our academic program for our students,” said Superintendent Robert Hunt, Chagrin Falls Schools. “This award is due to the district's ability to personalize education providing greater access for students, our student body’s commitment to challenging themselves and also the tremendous work of our staff in maintaining high passage rates."

Chagrin Falls Middle School Students Enjoy Lesson in Medieval Life As a part of their studies of the Middle Ages, seventhgrade students at Chagrin Falls Middle School analyzed the advancements in technology, art, and architecture. The classes researched Gothic architectural aspects of cathedrals: gargoyles, flying buttresses, arches, and stained glass windows. “We created panels of stained glass (really tissue paper) and assembled them to create a 16-foot by 3-foot stained glass window in our hallway,” said Teacher Larry Richmond, Chagrin Falls Middle School. “In addition, the students worked on illuminated manuscripts, took a journey like the Canterbury Tales, and made models of castles.”

Chagrin Falls High School Collects Large Food Donation for Thanksgiving Food Drive The Interact Club at Chagrin Falls High School hosted its annual Thanksgiving food drive. The Interact Club is the school’s service learning club. This drive is a week-long event in which the whole student body is encouraged to participate. Food is collected and picked up by the Geauga County Food Bank. It is then sorted and distributed to needy families for Thanksgiving and throughout the holiday season. The Chagrin Falls High School donation is one of the single largest donations made to the food bank each year.

Chagrin Falls High School Speech and Debate Students Compete in Patriot Games Classic On December 1, 25 Chagrin Falls High School Speech and Debate competitors traveled with coach Ken Kasee to George Mason University (GMU) in Fairfax, Virginia, to compete in the 14th annual Patriot Games Classic. This year, 107 teams from across the country competed at the tournament with more than 2,000 student entries.

Preliminary rounds for both Speech and Debate were held Saturday on GMU's campus. After the debaters competed in five preliminary rounds on Saturday, three Public Forum debate teams consisting of sophomores Sasha Haines and Maggie Mills, seniors Chris Currey and Jack Reboul, and Eneh Turoczi and Missy McDonnell all broke to the triple octa-finals.

On Sunday, all three teams broke to the double octafinals off clear wins in the first elimination round, guaranteeing a top 32 spot for each team. After the double octa-final round, the teams of Haines and Mills

and Turoczi and McDonnell advanced to the octafinal round. With random draw, the two teams faced each other. Haines and Mills conceded to their senior leaders, finishing sixteenth overall. From there, Turoczi and McDonnell, won their quarterfinal and semifinal round to make it to the final round. In their final round of competition, the four-year partners lost on a 3-2 decision to place second out of 177 teams.

In addition, Speech competitors seniors Derrick Vehar and Anna Sherman in Original Oratory, sophomores Mike King and Eli Shall in DUO Interpretation, senior David Marquette in Dramatic Interpretation, and senior AJ Wahl in Humorous Interpretation all broke to the quarterfinal round after three preliminary rounds. Marquette then broke to the semi-final round of Dramatic Interpretation, placing in the top 14 in the tournament.

Chagrin Falls Intermediate School Select Choir Sings at Holly Hall On December 9, students from the Chagrin Falls Intermediate School Select Choir entertained holiday shoppers with their singing at Holly Hall in downtown, Chagrin Falls. The Select Choir is made up of 17 fifth and sixth-grade members that go through an audition process at the start of the year. Students meet twice a week after school and they are also members of the CFIS School Choir which has a total of 74 members. The Select Choir has been working hard on singing in two-part harmony, creating correct vocal tone, creating a more mature sound, singing correct dynamics, and reading choral scores. Choral

selections at the performance included ‘Tis the Season Once Again (a medley of traditional holiday songs), Carol of the Bells, There’s A Candle (a celebration of all December holidays) and Listen to the Bells (an uplifting piece meant to get everyone in the holiday spirit). Students were led under the direction of Chagrin Falls music teacher, Mrs. Susan Smith and accompanied by Mrs. Julie Hoffman. “The students did an outstanding job at Holly Hall and the performance was very well received by audience members,” said Smith.

Chagrin Falls High School Art Club Visits The Glass Asylum The Chagrin Falls Art Club students participated in its annual glass blowing workshop this month at the Glass Asylum in Chagrin Falls. They created glass blown ornaments and cups.

Chagrin Falls Middle School Students of the Month The mission of the Chagrin Falls Middle School Students of the Month is to acknowledge and reward students for exemplary performance. The students depict Tiger Techniques: Think, Integrity, Grit, Effort and Responsibility. Each month, the seventh and eighth grade teams collaborate and choose a male and female "Tiger of the Month" and the students receive a special treat from the PTO to take home and share with their family. November’s Students of the Month were Emily Kohler, Henry Ryan, Abigail Laws, and Wes Kaas.

Seventh-grader Emily Kohler was named as a student of the month for her enthusiastic participation in class.

She is skilled at communicating her ideas with others.

Emily accepts constructive criticism and applies it to her work to foster improvement.

Also from the seventh grade, Henry Ryan was a November student of the month. He approaches new problems in creative ways to find a solution. He shows respect to all students as well as staff members and is a very conscientious student. If there is something he does not fully understand, he is willing to take the necessary steps to make sure he understands.

Abigail Laws is in the eighth grade and is described as polite, humble, sweet, and kind. She is always helpful and willing to lend a hand to classmates. She 10 | December 2017

works hard and is unafraid to ask questions to clarify something when she needs to. She never complains and always has a positive attitude and smile on her face.

Eighth-grader Wes Kaas is a great leader. He is a team player and is fun, helpful, and encouraging. He acts politely in math class every day. Wes acts as a leader in his group and participates consistently. He is a student who says, “thank you” after each class period.

Chagrin Falls High School Chagrin Valley Rotary Student of the Month Chagrin Falls High School senior Margaret Sobota is the Chagrin Valley Rotary Club High School Student for the month of December. Sobota was chosen for her leadership and service to the community.

In her time at CFHS, Sobota has been involved in Accent on Youth, a project in which she visits Gurney Elementary School, Chagrin Falls Intermediate School, and Chagrin Falls Middle School to act out roles for plays. She continues her dedication to the arts by submitting visual art pieces to Prism Literary Magazine. Additionally, she is also a Link Leader and mentor to freshmen students.

Sobota also led a fundraising campaign in 2016 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Student of the Year competition, raising more than $7,000. Finally, she volunteers her summers to the Chagrin Valley Athletic Club and aids the awards table at swim meets.

Outside of school, Sobota is a cashier, product demonstrator, and employee trainer at Heinen’s grocery store. She balances 15-20 hours a week on the job with her classes during the school year and dedicates 25-30 hours a week to work during the summer. In her spare time, she enjoys independently working on her art.

Her awards include AP Scholar with Distinction, AP Capstone Diploma, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Mission Award and Scholarship, Excellence in Art Gold Award (Chagrin Falls Art Show), and National Merit Commendation.

Her accelerated classes include AP US History, AP Seminar, AP Research, AP Calculus AB, AP Physics I, AP US Government, AP English Language, AP Drawing Portfolio, AP English Literature, AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP Psychology and AP Computer Science.

Her plans for the future include a major in English and possible double major or minor in Computer Science.

Chagrin Falls High School Director of Coco, #1 Film, Visits Chagrin Falls Schools Approximately 150 students spent time with Chagrin Falls High School alumnus Lee Unkrich ‘85, director of Coco, on December 14 in the Black Box Theatre asking questions and learning more about the director's career and impact Chagrin Falls Schools had on his life. Senior Jack Reboul was the moderator. Unkrich also co-directed Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, and Monsters Inc. Unkrich graduated from USC School of CinemaTelevision in 1990. He won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year - Toy Story 3 in 2010. In 2011, he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay for Toy Story 3. He has been nominated and won numerous other industry awards throughout his career for Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Finding Nemo, Coco, and Monsters, Inc. Unkrich offered several pieces of advice to the students. He encouraged the students to become really good at what they are most passionate about in their lives. “You never know when an opportunity will present itself and you want to be ready when it does.”

He also said, “Fear is a good motivating factor. If you are not on the verge of failure, you are not trying hard enough.”

Unkrich is married to Laura and they have three children: Max, Alice, and Hannah. The family lives in California.

During his visit with Chagrin Falls students, there was a special guest in the audience, his mom, Emilie Unkrich. She shared that her son always wanted to be a movie director like Steven Spielberg since he was a child. “In the movie 12 | December 2017

Coco, one of the themes is to follow your dream.

Whatever your dream is, pursue it. That’s what Lee did and I’m very proud of him,” said Unkrich’s mom on encouraging him to follow his filmmaking dream.

Chagrin Falls Intermediate School Students Enjoy Writing Novels

By Libby Cain, 6th grader, Chagrin Falls Intermediate School This November Mrs. Katherine Owen’s sixth-grade Advanced Language Arts classes participated in a program called NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). In October, all students planned the novels they would write. They created settings, fascinating characters, interesting conflicts, and meaningful themes for their stories. Each student set an overall word count goal between 15,000 and 25,000 words.

Once November started, students typed their novels on the NaNoWriMo website which tracked their word count progress each day. The website let them know how many words they would need to write each day in order to reach their goal at the end of the month and complete their novel.

For many of the students in Mrs. Owen’s classes, this was one of the most challenging academic assignments they had ever done. Student Sven Nielson commented, “The most important characteristic for this is grit and perseverance.”

“Grit” was an important topic in Mrs. Owen’s classes.

She described it as having the ability to persevere and work hard on your novel even when it was difficult. Students motivated each other and shared suggestions to overcome writer’s block. The Online Writing Lab at the high school gave feedback and suggestions to the authors. The NaNoWriMo website helped, as well, by giving writing prompts and strategies, they could use if they got stuck. All of the students had to apply grit to write their novels and meet their word count goals.

Once NaNoWriMo ended, students celebrated with a party and received certificates. They competed in several contests to start them off on the revision and editing process that would take place throughout the month of December. The contests included ‘The Best First Sentence Contest’, ‘The Best Last Sentence Contest,’ and ‘The Best Last Paragraph Contest.’ The classes submitted their first and last sentences to an author, Mara Purnhagen,who is the mother of one of Mrs. Owen’s students. The first sentence of a book is super important because it’s the first impression that 18 | December 2017

the reader gets of the book and the last sentence is really important because it’s what people will always remember the book by. ‘The Best Last Paragraph Contest’ was judged by a former Chagrin Falls student who is now a published author, Jessica McKendry.

One fourth grade student, Marie Cain, was inspired by her older sister, one of Mrs. Owen’s students, to write a novel, too. Mrs. Owen invited Marie to track her progress with the class. The classes had charts where the students put a star on for every 10% of their novel that they completed. Marie also came to the NaNoWriMo celebration for all of the students that participated in NaNoWriMo. It was a fun way to celebrate all of their hard work and effort on their novels. “I felt really included and it was nice that we all shared a passion to start and finish a novel,” said Marie after visiting the classroom.

Looking ahead, students will share their revised and edited novels with a classmate in January. After reading this novel, each student will present a book talk and author interview with the class. NaNoWriMo was a great opportunity because it gave students the experience of planning a novel, writing towards a deadline, and practicing their revising and editing skills. They were able to let their creativity loose and demonstrate GRIT!

Chagrin Falls Schools Leading the Way in Google for Education Chagrin Falls Schools partnered with Google and CDWG (a technology solutions provider to education) on December 8 to host an Explore EDU event. The event was designed for those districts who are considering adopting or are in the early stages of adopting the G Suite for Education and Chromebooks. Attendees learned about new products and tools, engaged in dialogue with peers, and embarked on a journey of educational insight and adventure.

Chagrin Falls Middle School Speech and Debate Team Competes in First Competition Chagrin Falls Middle School Speech and Debate competed in their first competition at Kenston on December 16. Charlie Asplin and Noah Salmons took first place and Mira Haines and Anna Campbell took third place in Public Forum. Christina Bencin took fourth place for Original Oratory. Mrs. Courtney Polcar is the advisor.

Chagrin Falls Middle School Students Enjoy Hands-On Learning of Country's First Constitution The Constitutional Convention was in session on December 8, 2017 in Mrs. Chris Bauer’s class at Chagrin Falls Middle School. In U.S. history, delegates from 12 states attended this meeting in 1787 to revise the Articles of Confederation, the country’s first constitution. A major contention between the states was the topic of representation. Students acted as delegates representing both large and small populated states hammering out this issue. The result was the Great Compromise. None other than the infamous General George Washington was elected president of this convention and he was responsible for keeping the delegates on task and constructing a new government, which was no easy feat. Student Eddie Jansen dressed as the presiding officer, George Washington, and read the Articles to the delegates.

This service is only for the parents of district students. Parents will be eligible to receive these calls when they enroll their students. If you are a parent in the district and you are not receiving the automated calls, or if you need to change the number that these calls go to, please contact Pupil Services at (440) 247-4564.
