“An Encouraging Future for the Anglican Communion”

Greetings, dear brothers and sisters in Christ!

J

anuary of this year saw two distinctly different yet fruitful meetings, both of which have a significant impact on our diocese and one on the wider Anglican Communion. On a local level, clergy and lay delegates came together for the forty-seventh annual Diocesan Convention at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy where, over two days, worship, fellowship, elections and discussions were the focus. Internationally, Anglican Primates gathered in Canterbury, England for a weeklong face-toface meeting dedicated to prayer, visioning, and extended conversation over the future of our Church. I am encouraged by these two meetings and what they mean for the Diocese of Central Florida.

In keeping with our convention’s theme “For the Sake of our Future,” I dedicated a large portion of my address to diocesan youth responses to these two questions: “How does the church make a difference in your life?” and “What does a Christian leader look like?” Although seemingly simple, the responses elicited were far from simplistic. The teens spoke from the heart about acceptance, the truth and power of scripture, intercessory prayer, community, witness, and mission. Their answers serve as a striking reminder of that for which we as a collective body should strive. Raising up this next generation of Episcopalians gives me great hope and faith in the unifying power of our shared Christian belief.

Likewise, the gathering of Anglican Primates garnered a similar sense of “being in this together.” As I wrote in my January 18 statement on the Primates Meeting, Eucharist was celebrated, feet were washed, hard and honest conversations were held, and all was bathed in concerted intercessory prayers with the results as follows:

1. A profound commitment on the part of the Primates to walk together 2. An affirmation of the biblical doctrine of marriage 3. Negative consequences for those branches of the Communion who choose not to walk together, including a three-year moratorium on any members of The Episcopal Church serving on any ecumenical or interfaith bodies as a result of The Episcopal Church changing the biblical doctrine of marriage 4. Condemnation of the criminalization of gay relationships 5. Affirmation of the centrality of evangelism

8. A cordial welcome of Foley Beach, Archbishop of the Anglian Church in North America, as a participant in conversations 9. Discussion of religious violence 10. An ecumenical and permanent date for Easter in conjunction with the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches Despite the divisions among the Primates Bishop Greg Brewer & in attendance, it is remarkable and an Archbishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon answer to prayer that notes of humility, mutual servanthood, and unity marked this meeting. I am also heartened that this meeting was not entirely given over to dealing with disagreements; the commitment to unity became the ground from which important talks about evangelism, religious violence, and other urgent matters received their rightful place. This meeting of the Primates is a clear signal that global Anglicanism has a significant future, and I find that deeply promising.

Over the past few months, I have become friends with The Most Reverend Josiah Idowu-Fearon, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion. In his role as the right hand for Archbishop Justin Welby, Archbishop Josiah oversees the effectiveness of the Anglican Communion, its structures and programs, and serves as a bridge builder to effect healing among churches in the Communion. I have had the privilege of meeting Archbishop Josiah in person on two occasions where I was struck by his discernment, encouragement, and unwavering commitment to a unified Communion. At a time when there are large divisions within The Episcopal Church, I know God is at work in the timing of the blessing of this new partnership with The Most Reverend Idowu-Fearon.

Archbishop Josiah believes strongly in the good happening in our diocese and wants to work with Communion Partner Bishops to keep The Episcopal Church alive within the Anglican Communion. As a reflection of his dedication to our diocese and an interest in meeting all of you who work to make us the thriving example that we are, The Most Reverend Idowu-Fearon will travel to Central Florida May 19-22, 2016 to lead a Clergy Day at Canterbury, present a lecture open to all in the diocese at The Church of St. Luke and St. Peter in St. Cloud, and preach at a Eucharist at the Cathedral. More information about this landmark visitation by Archbishop Josiah will be publicized via email, social media and on our website.

I remain inspired by you and emboldened about what the future holds for our diocese and the wider Anglican Communion.

Future Leaders Testify at Convention Three Backgrounds, One Faith

Tom Phillips, director of Emmaus School,

comes from a longtime Episcopal family. His dad is a retired Episcopal priest, and his grandfather was also an Episcopal priest. Tom, however, went in search of a different type of church experience when he became an adult.

Tom and his wife began going to a nondenominational church, which they attended for seven years until the congregation suddenly dissolved.

“The whole church fell apart when the pastor left,” Tom said, noting that is what can happen when a church is based on one man’s personality.

Looking for a new church to attend, Tom and his wife tried the Episcopal Church in their small town. But when they realized they were the only ones there under the age of 55, they grew unsure whether it was the right congregation for them.

After praying and searching, they decided to move Emmaus School to Florida.

Scott Anderson, a member of the Univer-

sity of Central Florida (UCF) Canterbury Club, shared during his testimony that he came from a Presbyterian background and loved going to church as a teenager. When he decided to go to college at UCF, he had to leave his hometown and home church and search for a new congregation.

“It’s hard to find a church community on your own,” Scott said.

After he tried several local churches, never finding the one where he felt as though he fit in, Scott was invited to Canterbury Club. He was more than happy to go and found everyone there so inviting.

“I felt as if I had been part of the club a long time,” he said, “and knew I had found a place where I could continue to go.”

As a result of going to Canterbury Club, Scott began to attend Church of the Incarnation in Oviedo.

“I’ve been attending the church for six months, and next Sunday will be my confirmation,” Scott said. “I want to be part of the church’s future.”

Park, gave a pep-rally speech about being a team player. “Every team,” he said, “is made up of several players who must work together to accomplish the team’s goal.” A team player needs to know when to make his or her move and when to allow another player to make the move. Chas noted that everyone on the team needs to do his or her part—which includes knowing when to step back and allow another team member to get the glory. “Working together,” he said, “things will get done.”

Chas ended with a challenge for us all:

“What role will you play on the team?”

“Canterbury was a good fit for the school because God was working in the mix,” Tom said. “We felt God was calling us to be a part of the Diocese of Central Florida.

“We have found that the students of the school are hungry for the relationship with The Episcopal Church, hungry for the creeds, liturgy,” he said.

“We are so happy to be a part of what God is doing in the Diocese of Central Florida. We hope [this year] to have our best school year yet.”

Of Mountains and Swords “He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths”

T

he Rev. Charles L. “Chaz” Howard, university chaplain at the University of Pennsylvania, began by stating that his message was taken from Isaiah 2. Isaiah spoke of the “mountain of the Lord” (verse 3, NIV). Isaiah saw the nations going to the mountain and saying, “He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths” (verse 3).

The mountain of the Lord is a place to stop fighting and serve the Lord. The name Isaiah means “salvation is the Lord’s.” Isaiah saw the Lord settling disputes after the people climbed the mountain to be with him.

Howard put forth his first challenge:

Why Are You Climbing?

What is your mission in climbing the mountain? For whom are you doing this? Are you climbing the mountain for yourself and your cause?

Isaiah goes on to say that when the Lord settles disputes, the people will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks (verse 4).

They will no longer fight but will work together to produce good.

The sword is used for battle; the plowshare is used to plant a garden. The sword brings forth death, but the plowshare brings forth life.

Howard then presented his second challenge:

Are You a Sword or a Plowshare?

Because the focus of this convention was on the youth, Howard mentioned that he sees and talks with college students every day in his line of work and has found the No. 1 reason youth leave the church is that we are “swords” who are too ready to fight and fight too much. We need to become “plowshares” if we want the youth to come back to or stay with the church.

The future of the church depends on it.

Diocesan Address 2016 Bishop Brewer Speaks Words of Hope

“It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.” —Mark Twain

I

kept thinking about that quote when I was composing my response to the recent meeting of the archbishops at Canterbury. I was hesitant; I knew it would be read by people from all over the Anglican Communion.

I wanted to write because I had a responsibility to do so, and I hope you have read it.

Relationships really matter. If we allow a coldness to come

in, then we are not following our calling. We know in part—we all have pieces of what God wants to do.

As one of a small group of bishops in The Episcopal Church who are committed to biblical orthodoxy (most of us known as Communion Partner Bishops), we are watched nationally, and our voices are heeded. Most in The Episcopal Church do not agree with us, but they want to know what we think.

Just before Christmas, three of us bishops spoke with Archbishop Justin Welby and his assistant for Anglican Communion Affairs, the Rev. Canon Precious Omuku of Nigeria. One week later, Archbishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, flew into Orlando on holiday.

Church of the Ascension, Orlando, was kind enough to host the archbishop on Christmas Eve, even yielding the pulpit where Idowu-Fearon preached twice that night. Thank you, Father Jim, for your outstanding hospitality!

I tell you these things to describe what I believe is the pivotal role orthodox bishops are playing in the wider Communion. Communion Partner Bishops are still given a very warm welcome.

And that is why our deputation from the Diocese of Central Florida was so deeply involved in the General Convention of The Episcopal Church this past June. Our team served us well: speaking clearly, compassionately, building relationships and friendships across theological aisles. I chaired the Evangelism and Communications Committee with representatives from around the church, including Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. As a result of the work of that committee, more than $2 million was committed to evangelism—a historic record.

We biblically orthodox Episcopalians take our rightful place as full members— not marginalized, cranky, isolationist, or fearful; but prayerful, winsome, and deeply involved. It was because of the witness of these dioceses that a resolution supporting those who could not support same-sex-marriage rites was passed by large margins in both the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies.

This is a time for the diocese to be more involved, not less.

That is why I am going to the New Wineskins for Global Missions conference April 7-10, the largest missions conference of its kind within Anglicanism in the United States.

I deeply support our obeying the new canon calling for each diocese to give 15 percent by 2019. While I have made a vow to obey the canons (and that is reason alone to obey it), I also support it because of this pivotal moment God has given us in the life of Anglicanism. Canterbury and others respect us precisely because we are fully committed to full engagement with the wider Episcopal Church. We have not walked away.

CONVENTION NEWS In many ways, one of the points of our strategic plan, which is to “take our place in the councils of the church,” has been more deeply realized than ever before.

We also made commitments to reach out to our neighbors. I see it happening around the diocese: Winter Haven’s Boy Scout troop is bringing in new members; St. Gabriel’s is committed to feeding hundreds of families a week; St. Edward’s is supporting a chaplain for the school; an on-the-side surfer’s Mass sponsored by St. Peter the Fisherman, New Smyrna Beach. I could go on. More and more, our congregations are seeing themselves as missionary stations called by God to bring the gospel in word and deed to the communities where God has planted them.

Brandon, of Nativity, Port St. Lucie, spoke of how he feels welcomed and loved when he enters the church. Most of our churches excel at caring for one another. The testimony of many is that they have come into our congregations and felt welcomed and loved.

Shah, of Nativity, Port St. Lucie, spoke of how much the scriptures mean to him. We have a priceless treasure in the scriptures. They are God-breathed.

They are the reliable promises that offer us assurance of mercy, forgiveness, and eternal life. However, very few of us own Bibles that (to quote the Book of Common Prayer) we “read, mark and inwardly digest,” and we are the poorer for it.

Grace, of St. Paul’s, Winter Haven, feels comfort in prayers. There is a rhythm of public prayer that carries us. It brings us to the throne of grace. It is no idle exercise.

David Bosch, in his exceptional book Transforming Mission (Orbis Books, 2011), says, “It is not the church, which undertakes mission; it is the [mission of God] which constitutes the church.” The key question for each of us is this: What is God’s mission for you?

It is to that end that our diocesan staff serves you, our congregations. Whether it is Earl Pickett’s fine work in finance, health care, and building inspection; Kristi Alday’s work as archdeacon extraordinaire and the fine work of the Institute for Christian Studies; Canon Tim Nunez’s diligent work with vestries and search processes; Canon Justin Holcomb’s recruiting and raising up of new leaders; or our excellent support staff who make sure you find the right person or get the right information, we are committed to serving you in the calling God has given you.

This past year, I ordained 12 people to the diaconate and 10 to the priesthood. We presently have 42 in our ICS program and 12 studying for the priesthood. Many of these people come from other church traditions.

The diocese gave out promissory notes for theological education totaling $28,500.

Growing churches teach people how to pray and have a relationship with God.

God is using our congregations to touch our communities. New people are being raised up into ministry. And a new generation is receiving what we have been so blessed to receive. People’s lives are being changed by the power of the gospel. Why would you want to be anywhere else?

God has a future for The Episcopal Church in Central Florida, and I am delighted to be a part of it.

Over this past year, at youth events around the diocese, our young people were asked to describe what is important to them about church. What they said can help us to think about what kind of churches we need to build for this new generation.

Sarah, of St. James, Ormond Beach, spoke of the church as being her “safe place.” Can our common commitment to Christ bind us together so deeply that people are free to reveal their true selves and receive healing from their deepest wounds through the love of Christ?

Ben, of St. Paul’s, Winter Haven, says his appearance has changed because of the love of God in him.

What does this wonderful combination of family relationships, formative worship and sacraments, biblical teaching and life-upholding prayer produce?

It produces changed lives that other people notice.

And finally, Zach from Good Shepherd, Lake Wales, shared that his church is invaluable to their community.

God is actively at work in the Diocese of Central Florida. God is using us to have an impact on the wider church. God is using our congregations to touch our communities. New people are being raised up into ministry. And a new generation is receiving what we have been so blessed to receive. People’s lives are being changed by the power of the gospel. Why would you want to be anywhere else?

We’re a family with a future that God has planned for us. We know, because of God’s mercy, there are divine appointments ahead of us yet to be revealed. I, for one, do not want to miss out on what God is doing. I bet most of you want to be there too. Will you open yourselves up to God’s future? Will you say yes to the adventure?

Let us continue to do this together.

“Accidental Missionaries”

Putting Jesus Back Into the Conversation in Lithuania

W

hen we learned that Canon Nunez wanted the diocese to tell our story, we immediately thought, “The interesting story is not ours, but God’s.” Our journey to becoming missionaries has been and continues to be a story of God working while we cling to him. We never set out to serve God as missionaries; we simply found ourselves in a place where the need is so great and so obvious that not answering the call would be unthinkable. That explains how we became “accidental missionaries.”

Eric Liddell … Jim and Elizabeth Elliott … Gladys Aylward … these are the sorts of names that come to mind when I think of missionaries. I mention them as points of contrast; these people were anything but “accidental missionaries.” They set out with determination to serve God and, in doing so, willingly sacrificed a great deal. Although my wife, Kristina, and I had often talked about returning to Lithuania someday to establish children’s programs, I have little doubt that “someday” would have become “never” had we been left to our own devices. We were more like Jonah; God had to pick us up and put us where he wanted us.

We moved back to Lithuania in May 2014 with very mixed feelings. On the one hand, as the one responsible for providing for the family, I was extremely relieved that a protracted job search had come to an end. On the other hand, nearly our whole history as a family had been in Lakeland and at All Saints’. Kristina and I had moved to Lakeland (my hometown) in 1999 after having met and married in Lithuania. Soon after arriving, we joined the church. We both were nominal Christians at the time, but did not stay that way. Even now, what Kristina tells people brings tears

to my eyes whenever I replay it in my head: “I was born in Lithuania, but I was born again in America.” I suppose I could say, “I was born in Fort Lauderdale, but I was born again in Lakeland,” though it does not quite have the same ring.

Kristina went on to work in the ASC children’s ministry for twelve years, our two children were born, and we all felt very blessed to be part of the All Saints’ and Lakeland communities. Even though God made it abundantly clear that he was the one moving us to Lithuania, and even though he gave us a year to prepare for the move, it was still a heart-wrenching experience.

We were leaving our family and friends behind. We were leaving a shining city on a hill for a very different reality. We were leaving the Bible Belt for post-Soviet, post-Christian Europe.

Kristina was born and raised in Lithuania, I lived there from 1994 to 1999, and we had visited almost annually since moving to the US, so we were not candidates for culture shock of the classic variety. We knew what we were getting into. We spent the first year going through the inevitable adjustments of starting a new job and setting up a new home and life. From a spiritual perspective, we knew we would be like fish out of water, so we were very intentional in maintaining our spiritual disciplines. We attended the local church every Sunday for two months even though we did not get much out of it. Later, we began having our own service at home. Despite having all our material needs generously met and the basic parts of our life going quite well, the first year and a half was hard. I hesitate to write this because it sounds so awful, but essentially all the joy in our life was sucked out of us. We experienced joy only when we focused on God: reading the Bible or other Christian writing, praying, listening to Christian music, watching or listening to sermons on YouTube (I think we have seen every Billy Graham sermon available online), watching testimonies, and witnessing to others.

So focus on God we did; indeed, that was how we began to spend all our free time. We prayed all the time, anytime, anywhere. Focusing on God was the oxygen that kept these fish out of water alive.

All along, we knew he was calling us to do more.

From the time we arrived in Lithuania, we had a vision of a Christianthemed English conversation club for high school students. About a year later, a door opened, and we held our first meeting in September 2015.

We also had a vision for a collection of adult and children’s Christian literature for the town library. When we were home this past Christmas, we mentioned this vision to our ASC family. Within a day or two, the books had been donated and the shipping paid for. But God had more in store for us while we were home.

A good friend who has encouraged us greatly in our ministry invited us to dinner with another couple from our church. Ever inquisitive and insightful, the wife asked if we had considered becoming full-time missionaries. We replied that yes, in fact, that was almost all we did think about. And with that, they introduced us to their friend Linda Fox. Linda has a Florida-based foreign missions consultancy, Bridge Builders.

When we called her, we didn’t know what to expect. But it didn’t take long for us to see God’s hand at work. Linda’s passion for and knowledge of missions was immediately evident. She spent several hours with us on the phone during the final, hectic days of our visit home, coaching us and even offering to facilitate setting up a prayer support team (now a reality) for us at ASC. By the time we got on the plane back to Lithuania, our heads were spinning. Since our return in January, the door for an adult English conversation class has opened for us at the library. Kristina now leads a group of eight women in discussion that includes the Gospel of John. And just this week, it looks as though a seed sown in the past for a Christian children’s program may take root at a local museum. Other visions remain, and we will continue to cling to God and see where he takes us.

Most missionary stories leave readers with the impression that the missionaries were amazing people. Their stories are impressive, but few of us can see ourselves following in their footsteps. I wanted to tell our missionary story to encourage others with the fact that we are the weakest of the weak. In fact, I spent eight long years learning just how powerless and utterly dependent on God Almighty I am. He taught me that if I would cling to him and follow him, he would not only take care of my family and me, but also show us his favor and make our joy complete by using us as his instruments.

Our God is an awesome God, and if you let him, he will do the same for you.

Come along on the journey

DAY ONE: The first Evensong of the postChristmas 2015; the 10-year anniversary trip to the U.K. by St. Michael’s Choir, Orlando.

All day today (December 31) was spent at Charterhouse, doing a final run-through of all the music we will sing. After three hours of rehearsal, at now 1:00 p.m., we went to one of the many great pubs in the area for lunch. This was followed by an incredible tour of Charterhouse, established in 1371 as a monastery for Carthusian monks. Quite frankly, we were overwhelmed by the kindness, generosity, and hospitality given by one of the brothers. Evensong was at 5:30— splendid singing by all! One of the brothers even complimented us on our wonderful diction!

Now members of the crew have dispersed to many different areas of London to celebrate New Year’s Eve. St. Paul’s Cathedral tomorrow!

DAY TWO: After a late breakfast for most folks, as this adventurous crew is wont to do, off everywhere and anywhere exploring London!

After cutting through some tiny streets that remind us of Diagon Alley, the cathedral emerged. It took our breath away! We had an excellent rehearsal, a most worshipful presence of the Holy Spirit, and a beautiful service of Evensong. There must have been at least 500 to 800 in the nave listening. You cannot help but worship in that place. “Wow! God is awesome” went through our minds constantly. One or two of the brothers from Charterhouse even came to hear us again!

DAY THREE: Collectively, I think the crew will have visited practically all “the famous bits” of London by the time our last day here arrives.

During rehearsal at 3:30, two amazing “only God could have arranged this” situations happened:

a Mother Rosemary, had studied the exact same degree as I had in university. We both had exactly the same academic hoods, which I have never seen another wear! We sang full of power, passion, and beauty. Wow—that eight-second reverb is absolutely thrilling! Again, a packed-tothe-gills St. Paul’s—must have been about 800, possibly more.

DAY FOUR: Our second Evensong at Charterhouse—this time, singing in the balcony.

Some more wonderful singing, this time to quite a large crowd for their chapel, due to our being there to sing on the occasion of the 80th birthday of one of the brothers. After free time in the afternoon, back to St. Paul’s today, for the first of our last two Evensongs.

DAY FIVE: ’Tis a routine now: breakfast and say hello to everyone, figure out what to do today, then be at St. Paul’s by 3 o’clockish for the 3:30 rehearsal and 5 p.m. Evensong. Weather continues to be very mild for the season. Another awesome Evensong. It was truly a little hard not to give all of one’s energy, voice, and spirit when in St. Paul’s, surrounded by the incredible examples, no matter where you looked, of how God inspired others to give him so much of themselves to create this awesome place! One final Evensong to go on Tuesday, then most of us return home on Wednesday.

DAY SIX: Our adventure comes to an end. On the eve of Epiphany, the light of Christ shone into and through these bodies—tired and exhausted from exploring, walking, singing, and pubbing (if that’s a word)—and produced another thrilling encounter with the living God at Evensong. We leave with hearts full of thanks and praise.

Thank you for all your prayers. We know our singing reached the ears of at least 3,000 folks, and we pray God used us to reveal himself in their hearts. Soli deo Gloria!

How It All Began The History of Camp Wingmann By the Rev. Bill Yates

T

he first Camp Wing-Mann (as it once was spelled) was a weeklong retreat for high school-age Episcopalians held in 1928 at Moccasin Island, a few miles west of Davie, Florida, in the Everglades. The place was primitive, with little shade.

There was a pool filled with black water and lots of mosquitoes.

The adult leaders included a layman from Tampa, Morton Nace, and a young priest from Fort Lauderdale, the Rev. Henry Louttit. The teens called them “Uncle Morty” and “Pop Louttit.”

The camp was named after two bishops of the Episcopal Diocese of South Florida: Cameron Mann, who was bishop from 1914 to 1932, and John Wing, who was assistant bishop (coadjutor) from 1925 to 1932 and diocesan bishop from 1932 until 1950.

The next two or three years, Camp Wing-Mann was held at Crystal River on the Gulf Coast. In 1932, the camp was held at a hotel in Avon Park, and then for the next four summers at Lake Byrd Lodge on the outskirts of Avon Park. During the years the camp was held at Lake Byrd Lodge, two other sessions were added: Camp Perry for young boys and Camp St. Mary for young girls. The high school camp continued to be called Camp Wing-Mann.

In 1937, Lake Byrd Lodge was not available, so the camp was moved to the Florida Military Institute in Haines City for one year. In the meantime, the Diocese of South Florida, at the request of Bishop Wing, looked for a permanent location. The search was fulfilled when John Sears Francis (senior warden at Church of the Redeemer in Avon Park) and his wife gave the diocese some property outside the little town on Trout Lake.

The diocese began a fund-raising campaign to provide money for building a permanent facility. However, times were hard. Florida was still in the grip of the Depression, and giving was slow. Lacking a suitable location to hold the camp, the directors decided there would be no summer camp in 1938. Finally, by spring 1939, the large sum of $16,000 had been raised.

Construction commenced, and soon rustic buildings with yellow-pine framework and cypress-board-and-batten exteriors were erected. The new camp had a mess hall with a kitchen, caretaker cottage, pump house, and five cabins. With great joy youngsters flooded to the camp that summer, which by then was being spelled “Camp Wingmann.”

As the population of Florida grew in the coming years, so did the attendance at Camp Wingmann and the number of camp sessions. By 1960, there were seven sessions, each named after a saint. There was also a camp for underprivileged high school boys and girls who were not Episcopalians.

It was called Camp St. Francis, and each attendee received a scholarship from a local Episcopal church. Camps ran for either eight or 12 days and cost $26 or $39.

During the 1950s, a chapel called All Angels’ Chapel was built as a memorial to the servicemen and servicewomen from South Florida who had given their lives in World War II and Korea. A house for the director also was constructed.

In 1959, the diocese, under its new bishop, the Rt. Rev. Henry Louttit (now called “Super Pop” by the kids), began another fund-raising drive that produced four new buildings in 1960. A gym called the “rec hall,” another cabin, and a new house for the camp director (the previous director’s house was now a small monastery for Franciscan friars) were built. In addition, a large conference center with a small kitchen, chapel, and rooms for 60 adults was built. The conference center, named for Louttit, was designed by Mr. Howell, a student of the renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Then, in September 1960, Hurricane Donna ripped through Florida, passing right over the camp. The old buildings weathered the storm, but the new ones were not so lucky. Half the roof from the new director’s house was lost, and the side walls and windows of the rec hall were blown out. Luckily, the steel frame and roof of the rec hall remained intact, and the damaged buildings were quickly repaired. Despite the hurricane, the decade of the 1960s was probably the heyday of Camp Wingmann.

All sessions were at capacity, and many kids not only had lots of fun but also learned to love the Lord Jesus.

As time moved along, attendance began to shrink. Church camps were not as popular in the 1970s. By the late 1970s, Camp Wingmann and the Louttit Conference Center were losing money. The Episcopal Diocese of South

CAMP WINGMANN Florida had split into three dioceses, and Camp Wingmann was located on the south end of the new Diocese of Central Florida. Previously the camp had been supported by the old diocese, which had stretched from Ocala to Key West.

1978 was a particularly bad year financially, and the diocese had to pay the large deficit. It was decided at diocesan convention in spring 1979 to sell the property and use the proceeds to build a new conference center and youth camp near the center of the diocese (Orlando). So the old property was sold to the Christian Missionary Alliance denomination. It was later bought by Teen Challenge, then Tri-County Rehabilitation Services, and called Trout Lake Camp.

Meanwhile, the summer church-camp program of the diocese went dormant. Then in spring 1998, a small group of former campers heard that the old Camp Wingmann property was for sale. The Rev. Canon Bill Yates, canon to the ordinary in the Diocese of Florida; his brother, Dr. Davis Yates; and a good friend of the men, architect John White—with the concurrence of their wives—felt inspired by God to get the camp back for the children of Central Florida.

With the help of the Rt. Rev. John Howe, bishop of Central Florida, as well as his canon to the ordinary, the Rev. Canon Ernie Bennett, and his youth officer, Jon Davis, Camp Wingmann was reborn. Bill Yates and his wife, Joanie, resigned their jobs in Jacksonville and moved to Camp Wingmann in September 1998 to oversee the renovations and rebirth of the camp.

The camp was in dismal shape, and every building needed repair. With the help of many donors and volunteers, the old camp was put into good condition and brought up to code. All cabins have been entirely renovated, each with the addition of a new bathroom wing, windows, carpeting, and air conditioning. The cabins still have a rustic flavor but are very nice and comfortable.

All the other buildings received major repairs and new roofs during this period so the camp could be used for its primary purpose: as a place for kids to come and have fun and learn about Jesus!

The camp quickly became the center of diocesan youth activities where weekend events such as Happening, New Beginnings, BC/AD, Emerge, the Great Youth Celebration (GYC), and parish youth retreats were hosted.

Starting in 2000, the summer-camp program was restarted and has earned a reputation as “the best summer church camp anywhere!”

Bill and Joanie Yates served the camp until August 2014, when they retired.

The Rev. Deke Miller and his wife, Sindy, have now taken over leadership of the camp.

Since its beginning, Camp Wingmann has had a special place in the hearts of those who have attended. Throughout its history, the camp has remained true to its main purpose: to bring kids and Jesus together.

The Ministry of Camp Wingmann By the Rev. Deke Miller

C

amp Wingmann is a place where kids of all ages can experience Christ in a fresh, yet old and familiar way.

From its sheer beauty to the lively worship of the Camp Wingmann band to the meaningful cabin times with counselors, Camp Wingmann is a powerful place to come to know and grow in Christ. It is every bit the old-Florida Christian campground with sunrises over Trout Lake and majestic oaks that shade its rustic buildings. But it is also alive with the newness, freshness, and energy of today’s youth.

What defines the ministry of Camp Wingmann is our core event: the summer-camp program.

This ministry to kids is rooted in the skills and gifts of our counselors and volunteers.

Our counselors are mostly college-age young adults who have either grown up attending camp sessions or experienced youth ministry in similar settings. God uses them to lead our programs and worship. The camp provides an encouraging environment where they can identify and develop their leadership skills while sharing their faith in Christ with one another and with our campers. Through the camp activities, daily worship, and programs they direct, our counselors are what make the camp experience the best it can be.

Our volunteers include certified nurses, program leaders, and chaplains.

Every summer-camp session has a certified nurse on-site. Program leaders are lay leaders from churches in the diocese who lead a daily, one-hour, educational activity time. Our chaplains are priests and deacons from around the diocese who come to lead worship and give spiritual direction when needed. I started with Camp Wingmann as a summer-camp chaplain, and during that time, my passion for the camp began.

Though summer camp is our core event, we host other important youth events as well. One is our winter camp program, a weekend version of summer camp. Others include diocesan events such as New Beginnings,

a middle school renewal weekend; and Happening, a weekend camp for high school youth led by high school youth. Happening is a Cursillo-type weekend during which students learn about the love of Christ while also experiencing it. We currently are working to bring Happening back onto the schedule.

What does the future hold for Camp Wingmann? We are in the planning stage of a major renovation project for Yates Hall (formally known as the Mess Hall). Yates is one of our largest buildings, second only to the lodge, and upon completion will become our recreation center. It will be better suited for our general assemblies, classes, and gatherings. The renovations will include working bathrooms (I know—amazing, right?), updated audio-visual equipment, and a real stage.

So how can you become part of this work? I have visited many churches in the diocese and am planning to visit more. I love talking about Christ and what He is doing at Camp Wingmann. But the response I often hear is: “We don’t have a lot of kids to send to camp.”

Maybe not, but there is still plenty you can do to support our mission and ministry.

Trails End Renovations Nearly Complete

e are excited to announce that our final cabin renovation will be completed in time for Summer Camp 2016! This is a project that began in late 2014 with a couple of contractors and a small volunteer group. Our volunteer group is quite unique in that one of the members is 80+. Our industrious leader is none other than Fr. Bill,

the prior director who was responsible to the renovations of the other five cabins.

This cabin renovation has been financed by two private donors who will be announced (if they wish to be announced) at the grand opening.

One of the donors was also responsible for the new bathroom for Anhinga, completed just over two years ago.

Camp Wingmann: An Incredible Gift For Kids Minority Camp Scholarships

E

very year, Camp Wingmann offers youth from across the state and beyond a safe place to come to enjoy a sense of community, make new friends, reconnect with old friends, and learn the joys of loving Jesus.

As one of the camp’s spiritual counselors, I look forward to being there with the bright young people of today. Camp Wingmann is a place where great spiritual seeds are planted in the minds of our youth and where the germination, nurturing, and growth of those seeds come to fruition over time. This was evident as recently as February 11, when the diocesan clergy had the opportunity to hear Dr. Ed Stetzer, who presented a clergy-day teaching and treated us to timely, substantive, and workable strategies for our mission in the world. He said the birthing of his spiritual journey started at Camp Wingmann. This detail impressed me, yet as I looked around the room, I noted that only one of the almost 50 attendees was nonwhite. I immediately thought of Camp Wingmann and how events that have taken place

there over the last three years could become the catalyst to change that racial landscape as we go forward.

One of the major factors that sparked my thought was something Canon Nunez helped us accomplish. By wisely using a $10,000 grant, he made it possible for almost 50 minority youth to attend Camp Wingmann in 2015. During one of our summer camps, Camp St. Mark, it was brought to my attention that a young woman who used to attend the camp had stopped coming because she no longer could afford it. We were moved to learn that she was able to return in 2015 simply because financial help was available to her through the scholarships. That was a moment none of us will soon forget.

Spending a week at the camp has become a highlight for my wife, Genevieve, and me. But more important, through our interaction with these bright young people, we have observed that it is the highlight for many youth who attend.

y nine-year-old son, Jacob Flores, was blessed to receive a scholarship to attend Camp Wingmann. I grew up in The Episcopal Church as the daughter of an Episcopal priest and experienced camps as a young woman, so I was beyond excited that my son could attend. But the loving atmosphere and spiritual growth Jacob received exceeded my expectations.

Jacob was in Shady Oaks cabin, and he would tell you his favorite counselors were Sam and Spencer. He enjoyed everything! The moment we stepped inside the registration area on Sunday afternoon and he saw the superheroes’ pictures and beautiful surroundings, I could tell he was about to experience God at his level.

My son, to this day, cannot stop raving about Camp Wingmann: the food, the chapel, the cool prayers he learned, and the activities. When I picked him up on Friday he was ready to go back—again and again. He constantly asks me if he will be able to go this year.

Camp Wingmann marked a special memory in my son’s life.

He caught a glimpse of the wonderful blessings he could enjoy as a child surrounded by God’s nature and nice people who praised him at a level of comprehension perfect for his age. I am forever grateful for the generosity of those who provided the opportunity for Jacob and many others to attend.

Being a Camp Counselor Our Lives Were Touched

I

W

ords cannot describe how much Camp Wingmann has blessed my life. It is an amazing place to have fun, make friendships that last a lifetime, and blossom in our relationships with Christ. Being in such a place has helped me grow stronger in my faith and taught me life lessons that I take with me everywhere.

am on Day Two of my daily thankfulness for Lent, and I dedicate it to Camp Wingmann. This place is truly a slice of heaven on earth.

There have been many times when my life has changed here. I owe a lot to this place and the wonderful people who make it what it is.

Going to camp for the last nine years, I’ve learned things like how to kayak (now one of my all-time favorite activities), play guitar, and, when I became a counselor, lead discussions about God so kids can relate and understand. To this day, I use some of those skills to teach my own youth group.

From the best program leaders to the best staff to the great leaders who run the camp and all the way to the campers, you’ll forever love Camp Wingmann and never forget what you learn here. God loves us and we are his! I am so thankful. God is good all the time.

For as long as I’ve attended camp, Camp Wingmann has been my favorite place to be. I can’t wait to drive down that little dirt road every summer and see the beautiful lake, because I know that’s the place where amazing things happen and where I became closest to God.

An architect has been engaged for the project, planned for 2017, and a major fundraising campaign is to take place in the near future. Plans are expected to include the construction of a wonderful kitchen and

Good News A Camp Wingmann Update

“Kids want to become leaders from being at camp.”

L

ast summer, more than 400 kids had the experience of a lifetime: participating in camp activities, eating great food, and making new friends. They heard the gospel in worship, teaching, and smallgroup discussions. They established and/or deepened their relationships with Jesus. Our counselors grew in leadership skills as campers gave their lives to Christ.

This past winter, we had 50 kids at camp. Prayer times in the cabins went deep. God is using this ministry to reach the kids in fresh ways.

This is what Camp Wingmann is all about: Helping kids to know and grow in Christ.

Living on the Streets of São Paulo Meet Dreyson

A

s we approached the steps of the cathedral, we saw an older man talking to Dreyson. Of course, we were curious. The street children are die-hard gossips, and we knew someone would eventually let us know what was happening.

Sure enough, one of them blurted out that the man was Dreyson’s father. Soon, we were formally introduced. The father was visibly upset. He had come to convince Dreyson to return home that day, but it became obvious that wasn’t going to happen.

We first met Dreyson about two years ago. I remember the day well. On his first day in the streets, he came up to tell me his name, saying not to forget it. I wrote it down. The next day he asked if I remembered his name, which I did. He smiled and went away.

He had been on the streets for two years, and no one came to look for him until today. Dreyson made up his mind that he wasn’t going home.

His father couldn’t understand why he would prefer to sleep in the streets. He kept telling us that in his house he had Internet, video games, and cable TV. He saw no reason why his son wouldn’t want to come with him. His father kept insisting that his son return home, but at last, Dreyson just walked away.

I suggested the father try a different approach.

Maybe he could come once a week, take his son

out for a snack, and spend some time with him. They could talk about what was going on at home with Dreyson’s brothers and sisters. Perhaps, bit by bit, his son would open up.

I was a little taken aback when his father said he wouldn’t do this. He could force Dreyson to go with him, but he knew his son would just turn around and return to the street. I was disappointed that this father didn’t want to take the time to rebuild his son’s confidence.

Dreyson’s father left. The other children and teens were upset with their friend for not returning home. They said if any of their parents came looking for them, they would go home.

How sad. No one else’s parents ever came to find them. They spent their Christmases in the streets with no one ever coming to see them.

This must be the biggest blow: being forgotten even by their families. Dreyson was 13 when he came to the streets, and it took two years for his father to come.

Apparently, it was too late.

—Convention 2016— From the Rev. Jon Davis

D

uring January’s Diocesan Convention, Rev. Jon Davis updated attendees on the Canterbury Retreat and Conference Center in Oviedo.

He also included his observations about financial shifts that will take place in The Episcopal Church in 2019.

Expressing first his thoughts on the coming financial changes, in particular the increase in assessments for churches, Davis said, “There is one way to solve the financial situation—grow. If churches would grow, they would not have to be concerned with the new assessments coming in 2019.”

He then noted excitement is high at Canterbury for “A Conversation on Race,” a weekend retreat to be held this May 2021. Father Jabriel, who is a voice against racism in our community, joined Rev. Davis on stage and stated that the church is the answer to racism. “This will prove to be a very informative weekend,” Davis said.

Finally, Davis said, Canterbury invites everyone to host their group meetings and outings at the center in Oviedo. “Their doors are open,” he said. “Canterbury is a sacramental place to have a great meeting.”

Florida Heritage Marker Recipient

A

state historical marker was installed in January honoring the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in Orlando as a Florida

Heritage Site.

The Florida Historical Marker Program recognizes historic resources, persons, and events that are significant in the areas of architecture, archaeology, Florida history, and traditional culture by promoting the placing of historical markers and plaques at sites of historic and visual interest to visitors. The purpose of the program is to increase public awareness of the rich cultural heritage of the state and to enhance the enjoyment of historic sites in Florida by its citizens and tourists.

St. Luke’s traces its roots to Francis Wayles Eppes, grandson of President Thomas Jefferson. Eppes moved from Tallahassee to Orlando in 1869 and was the first pioneer to gather Episcopal settlers for worship.

In 1882, the Episcopal congregation paid $300 for the site on which the Cathedral Church of St. Luke now stands, on the corner of what was then Main Street (now Magnolia) and Jefferson Street. The first church on the site was a small frame building.

In 1925, construction began on St. Luke’s present Gothic Revival building, which was designed by Philip H. Frohman, chief architect of the Washington (D.C.) National Cathedral.

The St. Gregory choir at All Saints, Winter Park, is now offering a brand-new parish cookbook, Scores of Delights.

ll proceeds will benefit the choir’s summer 2017 England cathedral tour. Contained within its covers are more than 500 scrumptious recipes from congregants along with limericks, spiritual and musical quotes, and glossy pictures of the church. The cover was created from a still-life oil painting by local artist and chorister Dick Yoho.

An Outsider’s View of Diocesan Convention “Being new to the Episcopal Church, I didn’t know what to expect.”

I

had attended several diocesan staff meetings and met the wonderful staff there. At these meetings, I experienced many new things, including scriptures being read aloud in a variety of ways and oral reading of prayers.

So here I was, heading to Convention.

Friday evening was an amazing experience. Convention opened with Eucharist. I was asked to sit in the diocese staff section right up front.

The candles, banners, and robes made a beautiful sight that I found unusual but interesting. The interaction between congregation and clergy went smoothly.

When the time came, the Rev. Chaz Howard went forward and gave a powerful sermon, “Of Mountains and Swords.” I interviewed him for the January issue and had been waiting to hear this message.

After Eucharist, the Town Hall meeting began. I heard some tough questions raised and some excellent answers given. The meeting stayed true to its purpose as a discussion, which impressed me.

The theme is “Chosen and Beloved,” and the retreat will feature hands-on Bible study, workshops, music, worship, and fellowship.

Saturday morning, the business of church continued with some fantastic testimonies, nominations, and introductions. After the introductions, which included mine, many people came up to speak with me about CFE.

A copy of the registration brochure has been emailed to all churches and includes information on registering by mail or online.

All in all, Convention was an interesting way to learn about the workings of The Episcopal Church. I really enjoyed meeting many clergy and staff. The people I met and spoke with at length truly show the love of God. Even when performing tasks that may exhaust them, they demonstrate great joy.

Thanks to the experience of Convention, my eyes are now open to a faith I never really understood.

I serve as the canon for vocations. I work directly for Bishop Brewer regarding ideas and strategies to answer the challenge of recruiting and developing leaders—lay and ordained—with missionary vision to help our churches grow in spiritual depth and ministry, and in effectively reaching our communities.

How do you serve those in the ordination process?

I work with aspirants throughout the discernment process for the priesthood. While the traditional path of a person being raised up by a parish and going to a three-year Episcopal seminary is still active, new paths are becoming common. Many begin seminary locally and finish at an Episcopal seminary. We find that ordained ministers from many different Christian traditions are being called to our church. For each, their history and training is different, so we must tailor Anglican studies in liturgy, sacramental theology, and so forth to each person’s specific needs.

First, I help identify, recruit, evaluate, and guide people exploring

a call to the priesthood. I serve rectors working with potential clergy in their parishes. Additionally, I spend a lot of time recruiting future leaders to the diocese. Sometimes that means engaging a lay person or seminarian Bishop Brewer has met in his parish visits, travels, or online, or a minister who was ordained in another denomination but is feeling called to serve in our Episcopal Church.

Second, I focus a lot on the education and formation of those in the

discernment process. I help aspirants to the priesthood design the optimum course of study for their particular needs and call, filling in gaps as needed with specific course recommendations. I support and encourage them through their seminary studies with regular calls and discussions about all they are learning. Throughout this process, I serve the Commission on Ministry and the Standing Committee

work with them in several ways. I lead the Ministry, Leadership, and Mission program. This includes 10 monthly sessions for priests who are called to new positions in the diocese. This is important for the continued growth and development of the diocese’s leaders as we focus on key issues for effective and sustained ministry: spiritual formation, emotional and cultural intelligence, marriage and family, leadership and management, and self-care.

Additionally, I am heavily involved in the planning for our annual clergy conference and continuing education offered through the diocese for our priests and deacons.

Last, I am working with a team of priests to launch a church-planting initiative that involves assessing leaders, developing them, and creating a strategic vision for locations for new churches.

How do you help develop lay leaders?

There are three primary ways I am working on lay-leader development.

The first is an annual conference on faith and work. Last year’s inaugural conference had 50 participants—approximately half from the diocese and half from other local churches. I am looking forward to continuing to build the conference in coming years.

Second, I get calls frequently from rectors who want consultation on Christian education for their congregations. As a seminary professor of 15 years, this is an absolute joy: “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12).

The third is still in the planning stages: the development of a Fellows program for recent college graduates. It would include a one-year internship for vocational development as well as intensive biblical and theological study, service, and fellowship.

Tell us a little more about you.

My wife, Lindsay, and I have been married for almost 10 years. We have two daughters who are five and seven, and our family was just approved to serve as a foster family. So we will have a foster child added to our family any day now.

I also serve at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in downtown Orlando.

My wife and I have written four books together on issues of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child-sexual-abuse prevention. I have also written or edited a few other books on theology, church history, and biblical studies, all of which are available through major booksellers.
