Beware of ‘antiChrists’, archbishop tells Catholics By Roy Lagarde
Priest decries ‘greed for power’ with upcoming polls
A ranking Catholic leader has warned of today’s antiChrists who calls God stupid and tells people “it is useless to go to Church and attend mass.”
In his New Year message, Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan cautioned the faithful against those who speak ill of God and the Church. “Do not listen to him who tells you it is useless to go to Church and attend Mass. Whoever teaches you that is antiChrist and there are many of them, including those who look at it is a joke,” he said. The archbishop did not name President Rodrigo Duterte but clearly referred to the latter’s attacks against the Church. In an open letter to his godson named Seth, he said he feared the child and other kids “might catch the wrong values”. “Nothing is easy these days when it comes to rearing children like you,” said Villegas. “You are subjected to so much vulgarity and violence that I fear… can ruin your future as a good Filipino and as a good child of God,” he lamented. Duterte is well known for his outrageous statements and unfiltered attacks at his critics, including the Church, of his deadly drugs crackdown. These include the “God is stupid” and “kill bishops” remarks. In the past, he also criticized Pope Francis AntiChrists / A7
“AS the elections approach, people are being killed because of man’s greed for power,” said Fr. Joel Mozura in a recent Mass held at the Mary Mother of Hope chapel, Trinoma, Quezon City. In their quest to stay in power, some politicians resort to killing their rivals, said the priest, who noted that some of “the victims of assassinations were innocent ones.” According to Mozura, some leaders seek to install themselves and perpetuate themselves in power at the expense of “innocent lives.”

True devotee loves God and others, says Cardinal Tagle

CARDINAL Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila has warned against fanaticism and appealed for real devotion that open one’s heart to God and other people. Speaking during the midnight Mass for the feast of the Black Nazarene at Manila’s Qurino Grandstand on Jan 9, he said that piety is embracing God and others with true love. “A real devotee loves. The essence of devotion is love,” Tagle said in his homily. On the other hand, the cardinal said that fanatics “only hold to something that gives value to them”. “A fanatic, once he does not get what he wants, will stop,” he said. “But a devotee
does not share the same reasoning. You are devoted because you love him or her. That’s what Jesus showed us.” To love, according to him, is among the characteristics of the true devotion to God. The two other qualities of a devotee, he added, are faithfulness and oneness with God and other people. “An overflowing love shows loyalty and service to others,” said Tagle. “And oneness with God and those you love is not an imitation but union.” Cardinal Tagle also came to the defense of the devotees against accusations of “fanaticism”. “It seems that every year Devotee / A7
Massacre of baby boys He pointed out that Scriptures mentions how Herod murdered innocents in his attempt to keep the throne. Mozura recounted how Herod exploited his authority, ordering the massacre of all baby boys aged two years and below, because of his fear of the rumored birth of the Messiah.

Pope prays for new year marked by tenderness, brotherhood, peace A New Year is a chance for a new start, a time to remember that all people are brothers and sisters and a time to nurture amazement that God became human to save all people, Pope Francis said. The Jan. 1 feast of Mary, Mother of God, also is a time to remember how strong maternal love and care are, and how they are the secret to making life more livable, the pope said during his homily at a feast day Mass in St. Peter’s
Basilica. The Catholic Church also marks Jan. 1 at World Peace Day, an observance the pope spoke about when, after Mass, he recited the Angelus with tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter’s Square. So many people were in the sunny square that Pope Francis remarked, “It seems like a canonization,” which usually is when the square is full. Mary shows to the world her son, the prince of peace,
he said. “He is the blessing for every person and the whole human family. He is the source of grace, mercy and peace.” Pope Francis chose as the theme for this year’s World Peace Day: “Good politics is at the service of peace.” “We must not think politics is reserved to those who govern,” the pope said. “We are all responsible for the life of the community, of the common good, and politics is good to the Tenderness / A3

Faithful urged: Be bearers of ‘faith news’, not fake news IN a homily on the first day of the new year, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, Puerto Princesa Bishop Socrates Mesiona reminded faithful to be bearers of good news and not fake news. During the Mass held at the Puerto Princesa Cathedral, the prelate p rop ose d thre e p ossible new year’s resolutions. One of these is to “try to be bearers of good news” starting 2019. Mesiona told the faithful to emulate the shepherds
in the Gospel of today’s reading. “Like the shepherds in the Gospel, let us all be carrier of good news, not gossip. Faith news and not false news,” he stressed. “These days, there’s so much negativity in this world, we need more good news to uplift the spirit of our brothers and sisters,” he added. The Vicar Apostolic also urged the Mass attendees to be more prayerful and kinder as new year’s resolutions this 2019. (Katya A. Santos / CBCPNews)
