NationalSpellingBee

The aim of the spelling bee is to support and increasetheEnglishlanguageproficiencyand attainment levels of Bruneian students. The literature suggests that participating in spelling bees and the practice required to compete help students develop spelling and reading comprehension skills and improve confidence and communication skills. This processcontributestolanguagedevelopment, vocabulary enhancement, and improved literacyrates.

CfBTasalearningorganisation

On Thursday 23rd May, our CfBT Education Services team in Brunei were joined by around 50 people from governmental bodies and private companies, for an insightful day of knowledge sharing and talks on continuousprofessionaldevelopment

Organised by the Training and Learning Centre, CfBT Brunei, the Learning & Development(L&D)Dayfeaturedtalksby CfBTstaffandteachers, whosharedtheir knowledgeandexperiencesintheirareas ofexpertise.

Joanna Brown, a teacher and learning leader with a background in working highlyeffectivelyinprimaryschoolsinthe UK and Brunei, was invited as a plenary speaker Herspeech, entitledComeWhat May: Enduring Learning in an Unknown Future, focused on three key aspects of learning that need to be prioritised in planning for a future characterised by artificial intelligence (AI). Other talks delivered by CfBT team members focused on topics such as the 70/20/10 learning model and managing a successful onboarding programme, along with stories from people who engageinL&DacrossCfBT

"I enjoy what I am doing. Everyday is a learning experience; I learn from the candidates. During interviews when they give you feedback, I picked up from there. It comes via experience, the more interviews the more things that I can pick up I feel like I am learning every minute" - Farina, HR manager

Dr Louise Pagden, Country Manager at CfBT Brunei, delivered a keynote speech highlighting the need for continuous learning in a constantly changing world. Louise shared some reflections on her personal journey of learning and how technologyhasevolvedduringthattime.

She also spoke about the frameworks and strategies that CfBT has been using to promoteacultureofcontinuouslearning–with learning coaching skills for all employeesaparticularfocusthisyear.

The L&D Day demonstrated that EDT is an organisation that embodies learning, and this contributes to our ability to adapt, as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our partnership with Brunei’s Ministry of Education(MoE)thisyear.

“Having theory and practice together was much more impactful. I started realising everything that I had learned in my undergraduate made more sense now because I was already doing it. I could implement that more effectively because I was doing it. Working and studying at the same time is so much more beneficial to the actual practice." - Anastasia, EDM

“There’s nothing wrong with just doing your job but you have to take a step back to reevaluate and look at it and go okay is there a better way of doing this? What’s the current thinking about this? Is this the best strategy to be using? You need time to do that, because if you don’t then there’s some really great stuff out there and you might be missing out ” - Alisa Gin, Co-Director ELTP
