WENN DIE BLASE PLATZT Ein Heulen kommt über den Himmel. Metaphern von Krieg und Revolution erscheinen in Ulrike Ottingers gemalten Geschichten: Hubschrauber, Raketen und Schrotflinten fliegen über die Köpfe der Menschen hinweg, die gerade ihres Weges gehen. Wie ferngesteuert verrichten diese Passanten ihre täglichen Rituale und stehen dem drohenden Untergang scheinbar gleichgültig gegenüber. Sie machen sich keine Sorgen, sie lieben die Bombe. Sie schießen sowieso auf jeden.

Als Malerin im Paris der 1960er Jahre tätig, war Ottingers frühe Praxis von der Nouvelle Figuration, der Pariser Version der Pop Art, beeinflusst. Inspiriert von Alltagsszenen, Comics, Fotografie und Werbung, wurden zahlreiche soziale Ebenen und Bezüge zu politischen Ereignissen in den Stil integriert. Obwohl formal mit dem amerikanischen Pop verwandt, der den Weg für eine Vereinigung der Mythologie der Massenkultur und der hohen Kunst ebnete, warfen die französischen KünstlerInnen ihren KollegInnen jenseits des Atlantiks Gleichgültigkeit gegenüber dem Zustand der Welt und einen Mangel an kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit Konsumismus vor. Die Bildsprache der Blasen und Sequenzen in Ottingers bunten Gemälden und Serigraphien steht der Ästhetik der Figuration Narrative nahe, da ihre Werke Geschichten erzählen, die sich im Laufe der Zeit entwickeln und dabei die soziale Funktion des Gemäldes und die Verbindung zur umgebenden Welt betonen.

Diese turbulente Zeit schlägt sich in Ottingers visuellen Erzählungen nicht nur in den Bildern des Krieges und seiner Maschinerie nieder, sondern auch in den lächelnden Gesichtern ihrer Figuren, die Spuren der Verzweiflung zeigen – im tragischen Bewusstsein der eigenen Entbehrlichkeit. So geht das. Wie automatisiert werden die täglichen Aufgaben und Kämpfe ausgeführt. Ihre Wiederholbarkeit reflektiert die der Geschichte, „Journée d’un G.I.“ (1967) – ein Tag im Leben eines Soldaten – spiegelt das Menschsein. In den Augen der Rakete sind alle gleich, wie Pynchon es sagte, gleiche Wahrscheinlichkeit, getroffen zu werden.

Die Rituale des Alltags vermischen sich mit Verweisen auf historische Persönlichkeiten und Helden der Literatur. Während die Allgemeinheit sich auf ihre täglichen Kämpfe einstellt, macht das Symbol der Revolution eine Pause. Ottinger ist skeptisch gegenüber der Instrumentalisierung der Kunst für politische Zwecke und setzt lieber auf Ambiguität. So verwandelt sie den Guerillakämpfer spielerisch in „Le penseur (Che Guevara)“ (1967), der sich die Rebellion erträumt. Das heldenhafte Bild Che Guevaras im Kontext der Revolution reduziert sie auf einen Che, der sich auf einer Récamiere räkelt und seinen Matetee schlürft. Nicht einmal der berühmte Beat-Poet hat noch etwas zu sagen. (Nichts mehr zu sagen und nichts mehr zu weinen, wie Allen Ginsberg es in seinem „Kaddish“ formulierte).

Ottinger wendet bei ihren Polyptycha und Sequenzen Erzählprinzipien wie im Comic an. Für ihre einzelnen Bilder bedient sie sich dabei unterschiedlicher Quellen wie Fotografie, Geschichte und Literatur. Alles ist miteinander verbunden, nichts tritt als isoliertes Phänomen auf. Da wäre zum Beispiel ihr Puzzlebild „Allen Ginsberg“ (1966), basierend auf einem populären Poster des Beat-Poeten als Uncle Sam. Auf der Eröffnung, wo sie das Werk erstmals ausstellte, schüttete sie die Puzzleteile auf dem Boden aus und lud die Besucher ein, sie wieder zusammenzusetzen. Damit greift Ottinger einerseits die zufallsgenerierte Cut-up Methode der Beat-Generation auf, verweist aber auch schon auf ihre eigene später erfolgende Wende zum Film.

Ihr neuester Film „Paris Calligrammes“ (2019) dokumentiert diese pulsierende Dekade in Form eines intimen Portraits einer Stadt und ist gleichzeitig eine Erinnerungsreise zu Ottingers eigenen künstlerischen Anfängen. Ottinger erreicht mit gerade 20 Jahren und weniger als zwei Dekaden nach den Desastern des Zweiten Weltkrieges die französische Hauptstadt, wo sich in die bildnerische Autobiographie der Künstlerin ihr innerer Aufruhr, ihr Ehrgeiz und ihre Enttäuschung in dieser aufregenden Stadt im Wandel einschreiben. Ihre Fotos aus dieser Zeit entpuppen sich dann als bildnerische Skizzen sowohl für ihre vor Ort entstehenden Bilder als auch für ihre späteren Filme. Die ewige Dynamik zwischen Leben und Kunst spiegelt sich in der Spannung zwischen Bild und Sequenz, zwischen Individuum und Gesellschaft. Die eigene Blase platzt. Geschichten zählen nur, wenn sie geteilt werden.

BURSTING THE BUBBLE A screaming comes across the sky. Metaphors of war and revolution creep into Ulrike Ottinger’s painted stories as helicopters, rockets and shotguns scatter above the heads of people just going about their way. Performing their daily rituals as if under a spell, they are helpless in the face of impending doom. Not worrying, loving the bomb. They’re shooting at everyone anyway.

Working as a painter in 1960s Paris, Ottinger’s early practice was influenced by the nouvelle figuration, the Paris version of Pop art. Drawing inspiration from scenes of everyday life, comics, photography and advertising, the style incorporated numerous social layers and references to political occurrences. Although formally related to American Pop, which paved the way for an integration of mass culture mythology into the spaces of high art, the French artists reproached their counterparts across the Atlantic an indifference to the state of the world and a lack of critical engagement with consumerism. The visual language of bubbles and sequences in Ottinger’s cheerful paintings and serigraphs is akin to the aesthetics of the figuration narrative, as her works tell tales that develop through time, emphasising the painting’s social function and connection to the surrounding world instead.

This turbulent time makes its mark on Ottinger’s visual narratives not only in the images of war and its machinery, but also in the smiling faces of her characters as they reveal traces of desperation, tragically aware of their own expendability. And so it goes. As if on an assembly line, daily tasks and struggles are executed in automation, and their repetitiveness mirrors the one of history, just as “Journée d’un G.I.” (1967), a day in a life of a soldier, reflects the human condition. Everyone is equal in the eyes of the rocket, as Pynchon said it, same chances of getting hit.

The rituals of everyday life entangle with references to historical personalities and heroes of literature. As common people prepare for their daily battles, it is the symbol of revolution who takes a break. Sceptical toward the instrumentalization of art for political causes, Ottinger opts for ambiguity, and transforms the guerrilla fighter into “Le penseur (Che Guevara)” (1967), dreaming up a revolution. The recognizability of Che Guevara’s image in the context of rebellion is playfully reduced to a resting moment on a recamier, sipping his mate tea. Not even the famous Beat poet has anything left to say. (No more to say and nothing to weep for, as Allen Ginsberg phrased it in his “Kaddish”).

While Ottinger’s polyptychs and sequences follow principles of narration through depiction of temporality, the sources as diverse as photography, history and literature materialize in the frame of each individual image. Everything is interrelated and nothing ever comes about as an isolated phenomenon. Thus is, for instance, her puzzle work “Allen Ginsberg” (1966) based on a popular poster of the Beat poet posing as Uncle Sam. At the opening of an exhibition where she first showed the work, Ottinger smashed the image on the floor and invited visitors to assemble the puzzle anew. At once, the reconstruction of the image reminisces the aleatory cut-up method of the Beat Generation and anticipates Ottinger’s subsequent turn to film.

“Paris Calligrammes” (2019), her most recent film, documents this pulsating decade in form of an intimate portrait of the city as well as a journey through the artist’s memories of her creative beginnings. Having arrived in Paris at only 20 years old and less than two decades after the disasters of the Second World War, Ottinger’s visual autobiography weaves connections between the young artist’s inner turmoil, ambitions and disappointments with the arguably most exciting decade in the life of Paris, all the while her photographs reveal themselves as visual notes for both her films and paintings. The eternally dynamic distinction between life and the form it finds in art is mirrored in the tension between image and sequence, between the individual and society. One’s own bubble bursts and stories only matter if they are shared.
