THE GARDEN OF INFINITE ENDEAVOR Equipped with a newspaper and a fly net, an old lady solemnly gazes into the Sun. Her skin, scarred with experience of a long life gone by, partly dissolves in a colorful robe she is wearing. Her introspection acquires a physical quality.

Paused in eternal solitude, there is little to do but wait. But the only thing that ever comes for sure is death. On a bright orange day, she lingers in anticipation, leaning on what may be her final resting place. The radiant palette of Fly Catcher, as of Dana Schutz’s other gouaches, conceals a troubling complexity.

With earthly delights long gone, Schutz’s works serve as premonitions of a world after its end. But after final destruction comes creation and reconstruction. These crude terrains are inhabited by figures obsessively engaging in different forms of work, led by shimmering prospects of restitution of an apocalypse yesterday, flickering on the surface of the image. Each of the gouaches paints a picture of a future that may have already happened, an alternate present of a barren world where nothing is left but time to spend. What would you do if no one was watching?

Their boundaries washing away, the figures of this world merge both emotionally and materially with their environments and into one another. In The Love, the two dissolve into each other in a fluid embrace of paint. Each of them, one flat as paper and the other monumental and monstrous, slowly disappears in a failed attempt to touch. Elsewhere, their feet sunk in wet bronze, the finger pocked figures in Couple with Wave stare at each other’s hollow eyes as she reaches out to him to complete his hand—the enigmatic protagonists are paused in eternal formal interdependency. Others come into conflict; doll-like yet somehow ancient, they are surrounded by nothing but darkness or collapsing buildings. As days turn into nights, Schutz’s couples collide, disperse and even create each other.

In these constructed yet bleak landscapes, smudges of paint and hurried lines assume the quality of physical obstacles. Overcrowded with characters too large for the open air, the edges of paper become a limit to negotiate, a constraint to overcome. The Sun becomes more than a faraway star—it is a physical object that illuminates the subjects just as much as it obstructs them on their paths. While Bosch’s Garden intertwines heaven and hell, Schutz’s aggregates contradictions within. Guarding the doors of this universe, stands The Expressionist, armed with two painter’s brushes. Uninhibited by the perimeters of a frame, the loose, unfolding composition in bronze embodies the expressionistic gesture just as much as the sculptural body of the painter represents it.

The works’ contents merge with their formations, as the artist renders inner struggles visual. So are the protagonists in Mountain Painter and Reader, for instance, each alone with objects of their attention, and their thoughts projected into their circumstances. While a painter tries to depict a mountain that she stands on, the rainy clouds above indicate a storm within. The mental activity of sinking into a book is mirrored as a physical situation of a book engraving itself into the reader’s head.

Thoughts and feelings pile up to compose the work, revealing themselves as an accumulation of disembodied faces. In Dear Ones, pack of balloon-like faces rides a dog in a scene reminiscent of the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt. Epic struggles are handled as unlikely but familiar scenes, as are the regular activities of any given day, while internal concerns become an act of heavy lifting.

Baggage, for instance, features a woman carrying a sack of people. They may be the weight of responsibility, history, or family of the modern-day Sisyphus.

The inhabitants of these deserts, islands, snow-covered mountains, and raw terrains seem to be all alone in a strange new world. But Schutz’s protagonists exchange gazes, point fingers, stretch out their arms in each other’s direction and sometimes even travel from one medium to the next, connected by an invisible thread sown between them by the eponymous figure. They overflow, shift forms and break out in flames—it is all business as unusual when The Gardener goes to plant the desolate land.

In Schutz’s carnival of images, the mundane activities of work obtain a certain darkness, appearing like acts of defiance in a desolate world. But here, adaptation and resistance serve as interrelated principles. After all, Schutz’s formations could just as easily be color palettes as items of clothing, heads, faces or pieces of land—her adamant characters may as well be working for art’s sake. Squashed by both the frame of the image and their own limitations, these individuals engage in endeavors with differing levels of success, reflecting the joyful tragedies of our existence.

GARTEN DES EWIGEN STREBENS Mit einer Zeitung und einem Fliegennetz ausgestattet, blickt eine alte Frau ernst in die Sonne. Ihre von einem langen Leben gezeichnete Haut geht an manchen Stellen in ihr buntes Kleid über. Ihre intensive Kontemplation, drückt sich in ihrem Äußeren aus. Einer ewigen Einsamkeit ausgesetzt, scheint es für sie wenig zu tun zu geben, außer zu warten. Die einzige Gewissheit aber ist der kommende Tod. Im orangefarbenen Licht des hellen Tages betrachtet sie das, was ihre letzte Ruhestätte werden könnte. Die strahlend bunte Farbpalette versucht, die Schwermut des Wartens zu verdecken – es gelingt ihr nur bedingt.

Schutz’ Arbeiten scheinen als Vorahnung einer untergegangenen Welt zu dienen, lange nachdem die irdischen Freuden erloschen sind. Mit der totalen Zerstörung, aber kommt auch die Kraft neuen Schaffens und des Wiederaufbaus.

Das öde Land wird von Figuren bevölkert, die sich obsessiv an die Arbeit machen, getrieben von der glänzenden Aussicht auf eine Erneuerung nach der gestrigen Apokalypse. Jede der Gouachen malt das Bild einer Zukunft, die vielleicht schon passiert ist; die alternative Gegenwart einer kargen Welt, in der es nichts mehr gibt, außer Zeit. Was würdest du tun, wenn niemand mehr zusieht?

Ihre Form auflösend, verschmelzen die Bewohner dieser Welt emotional und materiell mit ihrer Umgebung und auch miteinander. In The Love lösen sich zwei Liebende in ihrer Umarmung auf. Jede der Figuren – eine so flach wie Papier, die andere monumental, fast monströs – schwindet langsam dahin beim scheiternden Versuch einer Berührung. In der Bronze Couple with Wave starren sich zwei mit Fingerabdrücken übersäte Figuren, ihre Füße in feuchtem Sand versunken, wechselseitig in die ausdruckslosen Augen. Während sie sich anschickt seine Hand mit einer Berührung zu vervollständigen, sind die rätselhaften Gestalten in ewiger formaler Abhängigkeit voneinander erstarrt.

Andere Figuren, puppenartig und irgendwie archaisch anmutend, geraten in den Gouachen in Konflikt miteinander, von nichts außer Dunkelheit, ominösen Fluten und einstürzenden Gebäuden umgeben. Wenn der Tag zur Nacht wird, kollidieren bei Schutz die Paare. Sie lösen sich auf und erschaffen sich gar wieder neu.

In diesen selbstkreierten kahlen Landschaften lassen Farbkleckse und hastige Striche die physischen Limitierungen dieser Welt erahnen. Angesichts der Überfülle an Gestalten, die ohnehin zu groß für ihre eigene Welt scheinen, werden die Papierränder zu Grenzen, zu Hemmnissen, die zu überwinden sind. Die Sonne wird zu mehr als einem weit entfernten Stern – sie ist ein

physisches Objekt, welches den Subjekten Licht spendet und ihnen zugleich den Weg versperrt. Während Boschs Garten Himmel und Hölle miteinander verwebt, lässt Schutz in ihm die Gegensätze aufeinanderprallen. Mit zwei Pinseln bewaffnet, bewacht The Expressionist die Tore zu dieser Welt. Unbehelligt von den Beschränkungen der Zweidimensionalität oder einem Rahmen, verkörpert diese sich frei im Raum entfaltende Bronze die expressionistische Geste.

Inhalt und Form verschmelzen in Schutz’ Arbeiten, weil die Künstlerin den inneren Kämpfen direkten bildhaften Ausdruck verleiht. So sind zum Beispiel die Protagonisten in Mountain Painter und Reader allein mit den ihre Aufmerksamkeit fesselnden Objekten und mit ihren um ihre Lebensumstände kreisenden Gedanken. Während eine Malerin versucht, den Gipfel des Berges, auf dem sie steht, bildnerisch zu erfassen, kündigen Regenwolken einen aufkommenden Sturm an. In Reader wird das gedankliche Eintauchen in die Lektüre so dargestellt, als ob sich das Buch in den Kopf des Lesenden körperlich einprägt.

Gedanken und Gefühle finden sich zu einer Bildkomposition zusammen, wobei sie sich als körperlose Gesichter zu erkennen geben. In Dear Ones reitet ein Haufen ballonartiger Gesichter einen Hund – eine Szene, die Erinnerungen an die biblische Flucht nach Ägypten weckt. Epische Konflikte erscheinen als vertraute Vorkommnisse, wirken ganz alltäglich, während innere Zweifel sich als schwere Last auf den Schultern der Einzelnen erweisen. In Baggage trägt eine Frau einen Sack voller Köpfe. Sie könnten für die Last der Verantwortung, der Geschichte oder auch der Familie stehen, die der heutige Sisyphos zu schultern hat.

Die einsamen Bewohner dieser fremden Neuen Welt tauschen Blicke aus, zeigen mit den Fingern aufeinander, strecken die Arme nacheinander aus, wechseln manchmal gar das Medium, immer verbunden durch das Netz, das vom titelgebenden Protagonisten gesponnen wird. Alles geht seinen gewohnt ungewohnten Gang, wenn der Gärtner beginnt, das zerstörte Land wiederzubepflanzen.

In Schutz’ Bilderkosmos liegt den profansten Tätigkeiten etwas Dunkles zugrunde, auch weil jede Form von Arbeit ein trotziger Akt gegen die desolate Welt zu sein scheint. Anpassung und Widerstand gehen dabei Hand in Hand.

Schließlich könnten die Gebilde auch ebenso Farbpaletten darstellen, als die sie etwa auf Kleidungsstücken, Köpfen, Gesichtern und Landschaften auch auftauchen – ihr hartnäckiges Auftreten könnte ebenso gut dem Wohle der Kunst dienen. Eingezwängt in die Bilderrahmen und die Limitationen des eigenen Daseins, bemühen sich diese Individuen mit wechselndem Erfolg – womit sie den fröhlichen Tragödien unserer Existenz zum Spiegel werden.
