C Press Release E Reliance–SIBUR JV plans to set up South Asia’s W First Halogenated Butyl Rubber Unit at Jamnagar Mumbai, India: Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Russian petrochemical giant SIBUR has announced that it has signed a MoU at the recently-concluded Vibrant Gujarat Summit at Gandhinagar to set up South Asia’s first butyl rubber halogenation unit at RIL’s integrated petrochemical site in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

The unit will produce 60,000 MT of halogenated butyl rubber every year under Reliance Sibur Elastomers Private Limited (RSEPL) – a joint venture (JV) of which RIL owns 74.9 per cent , and SIBUR 25.1 per cent.

Apart from the planned halogenation unit, the JV owns a 1,20,000 MT per annum butyl rubber plant, currently under construction at the same venue which will provide the necessary butyl rubber feed to the halogenation unit.

Commenting on the halogenated butyl rubber unit, Mr N i k h i l M e swa n i , E xe c u t i ve D i r e c t o r, R I L , s a i d , “ R S E P L’s halogenated butyl rubber plant will be well-poised to capitalise on the significant surge in regional demand in tyre and pharmaceutical industries. India is expected to see a quantum jump in tyre production, with Indian and Inter national tyre majors gearing up to make capital investments of ` 15,000 crore. The halogenated butyl rubber demand is expected to grow at a rapid pace of 8-10 per cent CAGR over the next few years, driven by increasing customer preference for tubeless tyres in India and neighbouring countries, and significant investments in the manufacture of phar maceutical closures and tank inner liners.”

“India offers attractive investment oppor tunities given the growing local demand for synthetic rubbers and Gujarat’s favourable investment environment coupled with the welldeveloped infrastructure and raw material availability at a worldclass Industrial site owned by RIL. SIBUR has a long track record of successful cooperation with RIL and Gujarat’s government, which has provided us with a solid basis for expanding our footprint in India,” said Mr. Dmitry Konov, Chairman of SIBUR’s Management Board.

Halogenated butyl rubber is a key ingredient for manufacturing inner liner of tubeless tyre. With the Indian automobile trend aligning with global trends, penetration of tubeless tyres is expected to accelerate in the Indian market, resulting in an increased demand of halogenated butyl rubber. The ingredient is also used in the manufacture of pharma stoppers, inner liner of storage tanks, etc.

The construction of the butyl rubber plant is in full swing at Jamnagar, its commissioning targeted for 2018.

Production from RSEPL will substitute imports and reduce outflow of valuable foreign exchange from India, providing impetus to the government’s Make in India initiative.

The new site in Udaipur/Rajasthan will be operated by the German-Indian joint venture “Ravindra Heraeus” and will offer India’s petrochemical industry more capacity and state-of-the-art technology to recycle Platinum and Palladium in the country.

Indian companies will therefore benefit from larger national recycling facilities, which will provide less transport costs and easier file processing, faster recycling times and better transparency in the market and overall improved costing for catalyst recycling. The new technology will furthermore offer latest environmental and social standards. After the recycling process, “Ravindra Heraeus” offer its customers to either receive new precious metals products, precursors or the pure recycled precious metals.

“The new recycling facility of Ravindra Heraeus in India will allow our customers from the petrochemical sector to receive outstanding catalyst recycling standards in India. Reliance Commissions New Paraxylene Plant at Jamnagar on Reliance Founder’s Day Mumbai, India: On the birth anniversary of Reliance’s Founder Chairman Mr. Dhirubhai H. Ambani, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has announced successful commissioning of the first phase of Para-xylene (PX) plant at Jamnagar, Gujarat.

The plant with capacity of 2.2 MMTPA is built with state-of-the-art crystallization technology from BP which is highly energy efficient and environment friendly. With the commissioning of this plant, RIL’s PX capacity will more than double from 2.0 MMTPA to 4.2 MMTPA. On commissioning of entire PX capacity, Reliance will be the world’s second largest PX producer with 9 per cent of global PX capacity and 11 per cent share of global production.

The new PX capacity will add value to the output from refineries and improve the profitability of the Jamnagar complex. PX is the building block for the entire polyester chain. The new capacity will complete the integration within Reliance’s polyester value chain, leading to improved margins and also strengthen its position in polyester industry globally.

“Commissioning of the new PX plant marks beginning of the culmination of a series of projects including the refinery off-gas cracker, ethane import project and petcoke gasification. These projects are part of the largest contemporary investment, in excess of ` 100,000 crore, in Refining and Petrochemicals sector anywhere in the world. Our projects are on schedule and at an advanced stage of mechanical completion.

New Delhi, India: National Federation of Farmers' Procurement, Processing and Retailing Cooperatives of India Limited (NACOF) have announced that it has entered into a long-term agreement to obtain Muriate of Potash (MOP) from the Canada-based Encanto Potash Corp.

As per the contract, Encanto will supply minimum 5 million tonnes per year of MOP for a guaranteed period of twenty years to NACOF. Food security attained via procurement of an alternative supply of MOP and excluding middlemen for Indian farmers is an essential objective for NACOF. Stavros Daskos, President, Encanto, stated, “This is evidently a significant moment for our company and the industry. India imports 100 per cent of its potash and is prone to cartel-like practices from producers that can hurt its national food security. Establishing long term offtake agreements are difficult and necessitate a great amount of time and understanding of a country's food security policies and how they interface with the dynamics of a supply environment controlled by a small number of entities.”

Factually, potash consumption in India had reached around 6 million tonnes in 2010-11, and their aim, as per the Ministries of Chemicals and Fertilizers, is to return to this level as potassium is required in large amounts to endure and grow their crop based industry. The relatively high retail cost of MOP and other potash-based fertilisers in India encouraged many farmers to support the use of fertilisers biased towards higher nitrogen content due to their lower cost.

NACOF and Encanto believe a protected and stable supply of MOP at rational prices will incentivise India's farmers to progress to a balanced fertilisation program where the growth rate in consumption of potash-based fertilisers will be higher than the growth rate of consumption of substitute fertilisers.

The Indian government has set an objective to double the farmer's income in the next five years, and continues its efforts to educate Indian farmers on the long term benefits and latent increases to crop yield that can be realised from a balanced and strategic fertilisation program. C Industry News E Invalidate Notification on Input Tax Credit Withdrawal W on Gas in Gujarat, urges Assocham Gujarat, India: Assocham has urged the centre government to proximately get withdrawn the notification vis-a-vis withdrawal of input tax credit on inter-state sale/branch transfer of natural gas issued by Finance Department of Gujarat government.

“Consequent to this announcement, cost of re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) supplied by Petronet LNG to other PSU gas distributors like Gail India Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has shot up from four per cent to 15 per cent,” underlined Assocham in a communication addressed to Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman and Finance Minister of Gujarat, Nitin Patel.

The letter added, “These PSUs have passed on the upsurge in tax to industry outside Gujarat, thus making RLNG costlier by 11 per cent with opposing impact oscillating from ` 2.50 to ` 3 per standard cubic meter (scm).”

Considering that many industries are stuck with long-term supply agreements with PSU distributors of exorbitant RLNG and, therefore, cannot switch over to economical alternate source of energy due to ‘take or pay’ clause in supposed agreements.

“This notification has thus made matters worse by making RLNG further dearer hitting industries outside Gujarat very hard. At a time when trade and industry are moving towards execution of goods and services tax (GST), this withdrawal of input tax credit is unfair for industries outside Gujarat as it is making them highly uncompetitive,” emphasized the Assocham letter.

Hikal sells its Bengaluru R&D Centre Bengaluru, India: Hikal Ltd has announced that it has sold off its earlier R&D centre located at Bengaluru South in Karnataka.

This piece of land was lying vacant and had no constant operations for close to two years after Hikal amalgamated its R&D operations at its main site in Pune in 2014 and had transferred all corresponding equipment & personnel to that site.

BGR Energy Secures Two Contracts of ` 650 Crores for Water Treatment Projects Mumbai, India: BGR Energy Systems Ltd has announced that it has won two contracts worth ` 650 crores for water treatment plants. While the company has bagged ` 209.5 crores contract from the Eastern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Limited (APEPDCL), it was awarded ` 440-crore contract from Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) for a World Bank funded project.

In Andhra Pradesh, BGR Energy will supply water treatment plant package for 3X800 MW unit of APPDCL, Krishnapatanam stage 1 & 2 at Nellore, AP. The cumulative treatment capacity of these plants will be more than 55 million litres per day (MLD) and these units will be completed over 23 months. The company will also carry out O&M of these units for a period of 1 year.

With respect to CMWSSB contract, BGR Energy will be liable for supplying tertiary treatment reverse osmosis (TTRO) plant of 45 MLD capacity at Kodungaiyur (Chennai) and laying DI transmission mains for transmission of product water to various industries in Manali area & consequent O&M for 15 years. Duration of the contract is 24 months for construction and commissioning and 6 months for trial run.

Ahmedabad, India: Swiss masterbatch producer Granula AG has announced that it has formed a joint venture with Som Shiva Impex Ltd to produce and retail masterbatches in India. Chartered Logistics Obtains ` 34 Crore Contracts from Gail India Mumbai, India: Chartered Logistics Ltd has announced that it has bagged a two year contract worth Rs 36.15 crores from Gail India for the transportation of polymers from Gail’s petrochemical complex in Pata (Uttar Pradesh) to different parts of the country.

Gail owns and operates a gas-based petrochemical complex at Pata, near Kanpur (UP), having capacity of 410,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of polymers. It uses Sclairtech polymerisation process licensed from Nova Chemicals, Canada, to produce LLDPE and HDPE, with a nameplate capacity of 2,10,000 TPA and has two slurry based polymerisation processes licensed from Mitsui Chemicals, Japan, to produce HDPE, each with a nameplate capacity of 1,00,000 TPA. The company supplies these polymers across India to the manufacturers of plastic products.

Gravita Commences Production of Lead Metal from Recycling Plant at Chittoor Andhra Pradesh, India: Gravita India Ltd has announced that it has commenced commercial production of lead metal from its new recycling plant at Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. Exton, Pennsylvania: Analytical Graphics Inc. (AGI) and Bentley Systems have announced Bentley Systems as a co-founder of the new Cesium Consortium. Cesium is an open source, browser-based virtual globe, first developed by AGI in 2011 for the aerospace and defense communities. Cesium’s unparalleled performance in streaming very large datasets through a browser to desktops, tablets, and smart phones has enabled it to become the virtual globe of choice for geospatial viewing. The consortium will now enable AGI and Bentley to collaborate on the Cesium roadmap to better accelerate and support the requirements for building infrastructure modeling (BIM) and for owners of infrastructure assets. In addition, the consortium will support feature development, priority bug fixes, expansion of outreach efforts, and the hosting of social coding events such as code sprints and bug bashes.

Bentley Systems is adopting Cesium to visualize and interact with highly detailed infrastructure engineering models set in the reality context of their surrounding environment. The digital engineering models are created with Bentley’s MicroStation and BIM applications, and the context is provided through reality meshes, created from digital photography and scanning devices using Bentley’s ContextCapture.

Nandkumar, Chairman & Managing Director, Chemtrols Industries Ltd while speaking to Mittravinda Ranjan on Chemtrols four decade-old presence in the business, Emerging Automation Trends in India, Opportunities & Challenges in Automation for the Indian market.

En route to Self-Discovery: Inception of Chemtrols Some career pathways are just not predefined; sometimes you chance upon an opportunity and pursue it relentlessly to meet life’s goals and this is what exactly happened as in the case of Mr. K. Nandkumar, Chairman & Managing Director, Chemtrols Industries Ltd. Looking back at the growth trajectory, Mr. Nandakumar chanced upon working for one of the highly automated refinery of the time in late 60s, Phoenix Petroleum Refinery during the summer training program with sole objective of submitting a thesis on “Enhancing the octane number from 93 to 98 using catalytic petroleum refining process.” This led him to delve deeper into the process industry.

Hailing from Cochin, Kerala, Mr. Nandakumar, a young lad of barely 23 years was offered only a four-day training program at a frozen distillation unit to being entrusted with managing the entire operations of the core distillation unit after the four-day schedule. This is how instrumentation happened to him; however he continued working into process engineering in fertilisers as well.

Later the land of vibrant opportunities came calling to get started working for companies in Mumbai representing the instrumentation division overseas. To name a few, there was Aker and Italian company, then called Montek. Thankfully to his background in chemical engineering, he possessed sound knowledge in instrumentation and knew that the instrumentation industry then, was going through a shift from hydraulic to pneumatic, wherein a lot of mechanical components were procured from international markets.

The Fertilizer Corporation of India was the only testing and development facility in India then, with an instrumentation partnership and testing facility for instruments. During his marketing visits overseas, servicing instrumentation industry requirements, Nandakumar derived deeper insights into the gaps prevailing in the instrumentation sector. Instrumentation then meant only mechanical instrumentation, automation was a fiction.

Studying Indian market demands and the products being sourced from international markets, owing to no manufacturing facility in India, was the very inspiration that seeded the thought to incept Chemtrols.

Though the idea for establishing Chemtrols evolved gradually in time, financial constraints and lack of an industry set-up were some of the impediments to progress.

So, he started offering services on subcontracts then. Some industries agreed to manufacture components based on his designs and this is how Chemtrols initiated manufacturing of mechanical instruments in October, 1975.

To stay abreast with the industry trends and shifts, his passion for reading on process engineering did come handy.

He is an avid reader of the “Hydrocarbon processing” journal subscribed from overseas. During this transition phase of growth, Mr. Nandkumar actively participated in chemical engineering industry events such as the Chemtech and ICMA to network with who’s who of the industry, and further his practice by acquiring more industry insights and getting technologically savvy.

Four Decades into the Business: Still Going Strong Having laid the foundation stone for Chemtrols in October 1975, the company has been surviving business headwinds, meeting challenges put forth by the competition and customer demands to emerge as one of the key players in the chemical manufacturing space.

Practicing sustainability at its core, Chemtrols expands reach to foray into Middle East markets, while being extremely cautious of its moves that drop in oil prices has a created a climate of uncertainties for the industry to thrive.

The company has also started manufacturing valves at its facility in Bhosari, Pune. The reason behind venturing into this new area of valve manufacturing, as in Mr. Nandkumar’s words: “Government of India has identified 25 sectors under the ‘Make in India’ program, of which some sectors have the potential to lead globally. Chemtrols today manufactures pipeline valves, and high-end valves for all chemical industries and petrochemical refineries who are its clients. The company is keen on marketing tie-ups and tapping opportunities overseas, since it’s already into the controller area and valve manufacturing is the futuristic business expansion outlay.

The company is also investing into solar.

Being recognised by the Ministry of NonConventional Energy for rooftop solar, seconding Tata – Chemtrols plans to manufacture solar modules. However, it is still deliberating on the manufacturing fronts, because of crash in prices and excess capacity in China and Germany.

Even if a small enterprise adopts automation technology, if the person in charge is not sound in automation and instrumentation, he will need to hire trainers to manage the operation. This would mean extra cost to the business, and when the person gets trained in a smaller enterprise at a lesser pay, he switches over to a bigger opportunity for better remuneration.

Large enterprises are able to afford semitrained professionals, instead of recruiting a new hire with no formal knowledge. Thus, small enterprises tend to lose out and become a training ground, making it increasingly difficult for the industry to sustain.

Another challenge for automation is maintenance. Automated instruments need continuous care in terms of preventive and predictive maintenance, for which the costs have to be considered as an OPEX.

Except for industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing that are highly matured industries to adopt automation, other sectors in India have yet to catch pace with accelerated change brought about by automation.

If SMEs are unable to meet the overhead costs, they are required to face setbacks from global manufacturing plants such as those in China. Manufacturing gets a lot tougher because of limited capacity, high custom duties, costly manpower and expensive training. Manufacturing in the chemical industry can only achieve sustainability, when it reaches a global scale.

While automation impacts jobs, it also creates greater opportunities for the public good by enhancing the capability of

process and automation are different from consumer electronics as they need higher levels of accuracy, repeatability, reliability and micro size. Unless, India has a strong electronics manufacturing base, the components for instrumentation have to be sourced from Japan, Europe and other international markets.

Besides bringing electronic base to the country is a long-term process, since the instruments developed should be military-grade i.e with high accuracy. If the instrument fails to perform, it would incur huge loss to the process industry.

Thus developing India as a global leader in industry automation is a long-term strategy.

To sustain this dynamic environment, it’s required that skills of professionals be constantly upgraded and enhancements be made to the education curriculum from time to time. Facilitating industryacademia partnership is the key to envisioning this change.

Envisioning the future: Vision 2020 From setting up a manufacturing plant in Middle East under the policy decision 2015 to expecting 20 per cent of the revenue from overseas by 2019, Nandakumar foresees Chemtrols to able to build its R&D plant in the United States and Europe by 2020.

Since US is the market where continuous development happens, he hopes to tap more opportunities for growth during conferences and business meets. 40 per cent of Chemtrols revenue comes from the process analytics sector, i.e online quality analysis.

He further shares that 30 per cent of the company expenditure is on import from overseas, which is always subject to foreign exchange variations. With a mindset to balance foreign exchange, the company is now foraying into the Middle East and the US markets.

Outokumpu was the first company to produce a commercial grade of duplex back in 1931. Duplex stainless steels are known for their corrosion resistance and strength that enables thinner structures, which results in weight reduction. This opens up new perspectives and possibilities for many applications.

Outokumpu launched two new duplex grades, Forta FDX 25 and Forta FDX 27. In addition to usual duplex properties, these new duplex grades are more formable. Those manufacturers, whose applications would have benefitted from the duplex characteristics, but could not have used it because of its formability limitations, now face completely new possibilities.

Properties of Forta FDX duplex grades increase the overall durability of the application, reduce the need for maintenance and offer greater freedom for technical design.

The characteristics of the Forta FDX duplex grades offer new possibilities for instance for flexible pipes, water tanks and plate heat exchangers, which operate in harsh, corrosive conditions. Other demanding industries show rapid interest towards the innovation. Among these is pump manufacturer Grundfos, who sees a benefit from a solution that combines the familiar formability of austenitic steel grades with the strength and durability of duplex grades. The operating environment of submersible pumps is stressed by pressure, temperature, wear and corrosion risk. Important applications for such pumps include groundwater intake, irrigation systems, the dewatering of mines and construction sites, fish farm facilities, fountains and offshore installations.

The desirable properties of Forta FDX 25 and 27 include high tensile and ductile strength, and excellent resistance to stress, wear, fatigue and corrosion – properties that increase the overall durability and service life of pumps and reduce the need for maintenance. Because of the exceptional formability, the use of duplex could be expanded into challenging new applications like pump casings.

and in such applications as storage tanks, structural components, architecture and building. For architectural projects, Outokumpu has extended the offering of decorative surfaces also on duplex stainless steel grades, such as Deco Linen on Forta DX 2205 grades. These provide superior corrosion resistance in the facades in the warm coastal areas in Asia and in the Middle East, but yet provides correct look and feel that the architects demand.

Another area where the use of duplex is increasingly used is the nuclear industry.

While nuclear applications typically require superior strength and corrosion resistance, the naturally low level of cobalt in duplex makes it desirable in the nuclear industry.

Duplexes are replacing coated carbon steels having the same strength as carbon steel, so from the engineering point of view it is easy to change directly from carbon steel to duplex grades: the thickness does not need to be increased. Changing to duplex allows significant savings in coating and maintenance, making it more cost efficient. Thus duplex solutions have a competitive position to coated carbon.

C Features E In Asia, combining duplex and carbon rebar in corrosive environments W steel such as coastal areas has become a trend. In the outer areas of a concrete structure, duplex rebar is used, while in the middle of the application carbon steel is used as usual. It is critical that the thermal expansion of duplex is very similar to that of carbon steel. According to Outokumpu’s tests and calculations, adding 20% of duplex rebar in the outer parts of the structure of for example of a building or wharves, the life cycle of the structure can be increased by up to 300 years, and such a significant increase in the lifespan of the structure can be reached without much effect on the cost of the structure. For e.g. in the Gateway bridge in Brisbane, Australia, duplex rebar was used to achieve a design life of 300 years more.

Perfect Fit for Demanding Mine Environment In recent years, Outokumpu has also developed for e.g. a new nickel-free, high-chromium Core 4622 stainless steel grade that is a competitive alternative to traditional austenitic stainless steels. By its technical properties, Outokumpu Core 4622 grade is a standard ferritic stainless steel that can be used in many corrosive environments. It has excellent deep drawability and is easier to polish and has a lower overall production cost.

Rescue chamber is a stainless steel cabin used in underground mines. It provides shield and protection for miners for example in case of fire for as long as for four days. Outokumpu’s stainless steel is used for rescue chambers in mines in Kittilä and Kemi, Finland, as well as in underground construction sites in Oulu and Helsinki capital area.

Taking the Heat Outokumpu portfolio also includes its proprietary austenitic Therma 253 MA grade stainless steel widely used in thermal power plants, as it withstands very high temperatures.

Indian engineering company, Thermax Limited, chose this grade for the construction of a thermal power plant in India. Thermax operates in the areas of energy & environment and it is a major player in the design and construction of boilers for thermal power plants in India.

Outokumpu has been closely working with Thermax in many of their boiler projects.

Thermax has chosen Outokumpu’s Therma 253 MA. Components manufactured from this high-temperature grade are used for a specific part of the boiler, known as ’impact separators’, installed at the outlet of boiler furnace.

In this part of the boiler, temperature can rise above 850 degrees Celsius.

Separators remove particles from the flue gas flowing out of the boilers so that they can be recycled and re-used.

Ultra 254 SMO is typically used in challenging environments where standard materials will corrode.Ultra 254 SMO was chosen for Jyväskylä Energy Group’s power station in Jyväskylä, Finland with peat and wood as main fuels, after comprehensive field tests with a wide range of materials. Jyväskylä had built a new power station with a 143 meter tall chimney made of coated carbon steel in 2010. However, aggressive circumstances in few years the chimney was in need of renewal. The customer needed a material that could withstand the conditions in the flue gas duct & chimney, while also being cost-efficient and having high corrosion resistance.

In order to find the optimal stainless steel, Outokumpu’s corrosion department in Avesta R&D Center performed two long-term field tests with a wide range of materials, paying attention for weight loss and visible corrosion. The circumstances inside the flue gas duct and chimney are very unpredictable, given the combination of wet and dry conditions with relatively high temperatures. In addition, the presence of deposit forming particles can make the conditions very aggressive to material. Ultra 254 SMO has proven throughout the years to be an excellent material choice for many challenging applications when low maintenance and long service life are of high priority.

Special Gasket Development for Glass-Lined Steel Equipment

Glass-lined equipment is used in a range of chemical processes, such as fine aggressive chemicals, pharmaceutical products, agricultural products, polymers as well as metallurgical products. Corrosion Resistance: Glass-lined steel provides superior corrosion resistance against acids, alkalis and most other chemicals, except for hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated phosphoric acid.

Prevent Contamination: Some corrosive chemicals have the tendency to extract metals (copper, nickel, chromium molybdenum) from mild steel or alloy equipment. These products could leach into the end-product and cause contamination; however they could also trigger catalytic effects, creating unwanted reactions in the chemical process.

Cleaning & Sterilisation: It provides a smooth, anti-stick surface which allows easy cleaning and sterilization. It’s imperative that between batches the process equipment must be thoroughly cleaned. The anti-stick surface will prevent product build-up.

A gasket is being considered as a critical component, part of the integral flange assembly. The function of a gasket is to maintain a tight seal between two mating components to prevent leakage or emission from liquids or gases. An optimum stress on the gasket is required to maintain its tightness; the required clamping force however depends on the operating conditions such as pressure and temperature, the service media and the gasket type itself.

Premature Gasket Failure is Commonly Caused by: • Insufficient bolt/clamp load to achieve sufficient gasket stress, this can be caused by incorrect bolt material selection, worn bolts, seized bolts/clamps, or insufficient lubrication of the threads and load bearing surfaces. More than 75% of gasket failures are attributed to insufficient bolt load!

• Excessive bolt load could lead to destruction of the gasket and mechanical damage of the glass liner.

Improper shimming required to compensate the warping of the flange (especially larger flanges) resulting from the heating process during production, by means of synthetic resin.

Misalignment of the gasket could lead to improper gasket load distribution or even gasket damage.

In order to avoid first two causes, as mentioned above, it is recommended to use a controlled tightening method during gasket installation in order to achieve a homogeneous load distribution on the flange assembly. Retightening of bolts after first heat cycle is recommended.

The most commonly used gaskets for glasslined flanges are PTFE envelope gaskets.

They are in general constructed of a slit (V-form) or milled PTFE (U-form) envelope and in general fitted with a compressed non-asbestos fibre (CNAF) gasket material. The slit or V-form type PTFE envelope gaskets are prone to cracking and do not enable to position the insert perfectly, with resulting warping effect and possible risk of “folding” the envelope during installation. Furthermore, a corrugated metal ring can be fitted between two layers of compressed nonasbestos fibre material to increase its strength and preventing blow-out.

Together with a global manufacturer of glass-lined equipment, Donit® has designed the multi-purpose TF34, a special PTFE envelope gasket, fitted with high compressible sealing inserts, entirely developed for glass-lined flanges. (Nozzle gaskets according to DIN 28148).

The gasket consists of a 100% virgin grade PTFE milled U-type envelope with an anti-diffusion wall at the inner diameter of the envelope, which improves mechanical strength, reduces the effect of warping and moreover decreases the rate of permeability for searching gases and also protects the inserts from the hazardous environment.

The sealing insert is made of corrugated stainless steel which adds to the strength of the entire gasket, increases blow-out resistance and improves adaptability between the unevenness of the flange surfaces. The corrugated ring can be provided with welded tabs to improve positioning of the gasket during installation.

A layer of Doniflex® G-LD (an engineered graphite sheet material) is fitted on each side of the corrugated metal ring. This material doesn’t only allow high compressibility up to 33% with a memory of 28% (ASTM F36J), it also provides a higher thermal resistance compared to classic CANF materials as well as improved chemical resistance.

This high quality gasket concept complies to the most stringent regulations In terms of Fugitive Emissions according to German TA-Luft (VDI2440) regulation with a value of 3, 3.10-5 mbar.l/m.s with Helium.

All test procedures (thermo-mechanical and sealing performance properties) were performed according to EN13555 in order to obtain gasket values to conduct bolt load calculation according to EN1591.

Each PTFE envelope gasket is spark tested to ensure no pinholes can be found on the gasket.

The resulting gasket concept, exhibits the amazing array of properties to maintain the integrity of glass-lined equipment in hazardous environments.

Chemicals in India – Turning Opportunity to Reality

Given its defensibility and growth prospects, Specialty chemicals is one of the most attractive segments within the Indian manufacturing space today. The sector is positively influenced by macro-economic factors such as shift of manufacturing to India; growth at the end-user level, domestic demand driven by rising incomes, rural growth, premiumisation; move towards natural products etc. Additionally, Indian companies are becoming increasingly equipped to give MNCs a run for their money, with significant time, money and efforts being spent on upping regulatory compliance standards, systems and processes and efforts towards creating intellectual property.

Recently, tightened pollution control norms in China have led to multiple plant shutdowns in chemicals and other manufacturing segments. As a result, Indian chemical manufacturers have gained from production shift to India visibly in segments such as Dyes and Pigments.

2) Increase in Adoption by End-Users In several industries in India, the per-capital usage of specialty chemicals is dismally low compared to other economies implying significant headroom for growth in this space.

For example, the Indian construction industry is very price sensitive and has not been an active consumer of construction chemicals, hence the value of construction chemicals as a per cent of the construction cost in India is a fraction of global averages. With the adoption of global construction techniques, the use of construction chemicals is expected to rise rapidly. In sectors such as Dyes and Pigments, natural colors are gaining popularity in food and beverage applications. The use of ecofriendly colorants such as low impact dyes is emerging with features such as low water requirement to rinse off residues during dyeing and rinsing process leading to lower pollution. With the tightening of environmental norms both globally and in India, the polymer additives market is shifting to environmentally safe, higher value products.

4) Rising Disposable Income, Increasing Rural Penetration With rising disposable income and increasing rural penetration of goods & services positively impacting the end-user segments, several specialty chemical sub-sectors are expected to benefit. 5) Premiumisation As Indian consumers graduate from using basic soaps and detergents to higher end products such as skin creams, lotions, hair gels and other specialized cosmetic products, the quality and value of the flavors and fragrances used in these products is expected to increase. In the beverage space, fruit-based drinks (expected to grow at 30 per cent p.a.) are becoming popular and consumers are demanding unique flavors. These require high value flavoring ingredients. India is also witnessing increasing consumption of higher end, discretionary and prestige products which typically use higher value active ingredients driving growth in the ingredients market. For instance, nearly 50 per cent of the total new launches in the personal care space were premium brands driven by increase in disposable income, rising young working population and growth in organized retail. Premiumisation will provide a significant fillip to segments like flavors and fragrances, surfactants, personal care ingredients and nutraceutical ingredients.

6) Innovation Product innovation is vital in many segments of specialty chemicals. In the case of agrochemicals, pests develop immunity against commonly used agrochemicals over time, as a result of which agrochemical manufacturers constantly need to focus on new product development that can protect crops against resistant strains of pests.

Some of the leading agrochemical companies in India make considerable investments in maintaining a strong product pipeline and compete with global majors.

In the F&F space, blenders add value by creating unique scents. These are created by unique combinations of numerous aroma ingredients and additives to produce balanced blends. There is usually considerable IP involved in creation of scents. Blenders have to be able to keep

innovating, creating unique fragrances and flavors as the market demands. The global F&F houses spend an average of 9 per cent on R&D. There is a lot of collaborative development involving end-users as well in order to keep with consumer trends.

Indian companies in this space are taking significant strides on technical grounds as well, competing with global giants, not only in India but also in export markets.

Innovation and differentiation is critical for players to maintain profitability and prevent commoditization of ingredients. Regulatory environment is another driver of innovation as a number of synthetic active ingredients have been banned across the globe due to potential health hazards. Ingredient manufacturers have to focus on R&D to develop safer natural or synthetic ingredients to replace such products. Innovation and differentiation has been the focus for Indian players constantly looking out for newer requirements from the USA and European markets and focus their R&D efforts accordingly.

By 2050, the world will have a population of 9 billion people. And, as per a 2015 UN report, a majority will live in Asia; with India being the most populous. India’s middle-class population is expected to grow to 475 million by 2030, forming around 70 per cent of the country’s total population, as per a report by global workplace solutions provider, Steelcase.

This increase in population and in the middle class means growing purchasing power, which translates into consumers’ demand for higher quality of living. People will need better access to affordable

The automobile industry is another example, which is now taking steps to reduce emission of carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide and particulate material in the environment since the Indian Government has mandated implementation of BS IV norms for heavy vehicles by 2017; and compliance with BS VI norms for automobile industry by 2020.

As India becomes party to various global environmental treaties, there will be obligations that will be placed on us. Today, being environmentally and socially responsible goes hand in hand with running a profitable business.

save fuel. Our products also reduce the energy and emissions in the production process – like paint and coatings systems that reduce energy and heat as well as volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Better management of food waste with biodegradable plastics: We are working with the government to address the challenge of waste management and composting.

While compostable bags can be one major solution to plastic pollution, what is most important is the end of the life cycle -- composting of this waste. Though there is still a long journey ahead, we are hopeful that we will jointly (with the government) be able to bring in the much needed solution to this challenge.

Improving water management with “India Water Tool”: This online tool helps the development of a comprehensive corporate water management strategy and holistic stewardship approaches.

It has been developed by a Working Group of 13 partners including ten companies and three knowledge partners, coordinated by the WBCSD. This tool is a great example of collaboration between key players to create a sustainable future for business, society and the environment through responsible water management. There is an increasing understanding among leading companies that water is a shared resource with finite volumes resulting in collective risk.

What are your thoughts on the Make in India initiative?

India has all that it takes to emerge as a manufacturing country. According to labour ministry data, around 1 million people enter the workforce in India every month. The manufacturing sector can absorb a good proportion of these people. India has seen substantial investments in manufacturing activities and the Make in India initiative will further boost growth of the manufacturing sector. The government is trying to create a favourable business environment for businesses and industries and this is one area which we also look forward to benefit from.

In your opinion, which are the other areas that need strong collaboration between the industry and government to support the growth of Indian chemical industry?

There is a need for continuous dialogue between the government and the industry because there is a need to recognise that while there is a sincere intent at the top, the last mile delivery often gets affected. As an industry, we need to take advantage of the good intent of the government and use specific examples to provide feedback for continuous dialogue, to improve ease of doing business.

The passing of GST bill is once such landmark tax reform, which came out of government-industry dialogues.

To increase the investment and growth of the chemical industry in India, we need to benchmark ourselves with regard to energy cost, to be able to provide materials and products at globally competitive prices. Since India is highly dependent on energy imports, the Indian

Government needs to device solutions to provide energy to industry at a cost that is competitive with other countries globally. Setting up reverse SEZs in Bangladesh and Iran is a positive step in this direction, to secure long term feedstock availability.

Our future plan is to grow profitably and ramp up utilization of assets that we have created on-ground. Being a part of the global R&D network, we are focused on leveraging the talent available in the country and aim to position ourselves as a company which is able to provide real innovative solutions for our customers in India.

Where does Aarti Group stand today since the company commenced its journey?

Our journey started way back in 1975, when the Indian Government was encouraging small scale investments in chemical manufacturing to develop indigenous chemical industry for import substitution.

My brother Chandrakant Gogri – Chemical Engineer from Bombay University and his partner saw an opportunity and set up the first small scale manufacturing unit in Dombivali near Mumbai. I joined the business in 1983 after completing my Masters in Chemical Engineering from USA, and over the next couple of years, we added more small scale manufacturing units in Tarapur and later in Sarigam Though we always wanted to set up larger units, but it was only during 1990 62 • January 2017

after the end of licensing raj era that the chemical manufacturers could set up large scale facilities. In the due course we started expanding our facilities through backward integration to have feedstock security and continued to have strong focus on developing inhouse R&D capabilities which has been a strong growth driver for our organization.

Today, Aarti Group has 16 factories spread over 10 different locations where have developed diversified product portfolio of 125 specialty products through our in-house R&D which includes intermediates for dyes and pigments, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, rubber chemicals, home and personal care and serves over 800 valued customers in Indian as well as international markets.

How has Aarti Industries achieved strong global presence and recognised as one of the leading specialty chemicals player globally in a span of slightly over 40 years?

Chemical industry as such has a very wide number of chemicals, but from the time we commenced on our journey, we wanted to be niche in our own space and develop our own R&D capabilities. Over the years, we have built key chemistries and wide customer base that we will continue to leverage as we further expand our capacities and operations.

In-house research is on-going process for us at Aarti Industries to strengthen our technical competence and our technical teams work very closely with our customers to understand their needs and supply products to meet their specific requirements.

We have developed strong customer relationships that are based on integrity, care and excellence. In the times of crisis like product shortage etc. we have always stood by our customers and honored the contracts, which has earned us the reputation of being credible long term suppliers for our customers.

How are the market dynamics changing across various geographies and what part of production Aarti Industries exports?

Initially, it was only the dye stuff intermediates that were being exported, but as the dyeing industry moved from West of Suez to the East, the exports of dyes intermediates saw a sharp decline in exports. However, our business remained immune to the market shift since we still had the same as also new clients who had set up their facilities in India and had continued buying from us.

Moreover, there was thrust on the other sectors such as pigments, polymers, additives, agrochemicals where the developed nations started looking at India as a key supplier for products which is what gave the push in the last 10 years to our business as well.

Globally crop protection companies are very bullish as far as growth is concerned and in the years to come we are witnessing a strong demand from this sector. Worldwide, there is a strong shift from metals to innovative engineering polymers on the materials side driven strongly by the application in the space of automobiles, aerospace, electrical and electronics sectors.

We export almost fifty per cent of our total production to various countries.

North America, EU, Japan and China are the key markets for us and in terms of volume, one third of exports are for North America, one third for EU countries and then for rest of the world. China is a big market for us and accounts for almost 16 per cent of exported products. Because of the slowdown the product prices have marginally declined but since we have 66 • January 2017

a very wide geographical spread and expansive product portfolio, we are in a pretty good shape.

In the years to come, we see a good demand for existing as well as new products across all segments from all key markets in North America, EU countries, Japan and China as well.

Though Aarti Industries has been at the forefront of being a sustainable solution provider right from the beginning, initially did you face any issues in being accepted as the preferred supplier from the global chemical majors?

No, we never faced any such issues right from the early years since we proactively engaged in following sustainable practices. While we offer niche chemistries to our customers, on the other hand we have continued to invest in improving our processes and efficiencies through our in-house research to comply with the changing regulatory standards.

We have always believed in selfregulation and one such example in this direction was to set up effluent treatment plants across all our manufacturing units out of which some have now been upgraded to zero liquid discharge.

Through our in-house research, we have developed several in-house technologies and introduced several process innovations like process to produce dry HCl to produce chlorosulfonic acid, a reactive dye intermediate. This new process offered two major advantages as it allowed us to utilise Dry HCl gas that was generated as the by product and eliminated the restriction of limiting capacity as there was no water. This technology picked up very fast since it allows the manufacturers to set up standalone plant with sulphur trioxide (SO 3 ) and there is no restriction on capacity due to lack of water content which are the major advantages of this process.

Strong thrust on innovation and R&D has been one of the key drivers for our business which has enabled us to carve our niche in the market space and become a preferred business partner for organisations of high repute not only from India but even seek strong international partnerships.

We have pioneered in introducing various technologies in India, such as commercialising Continuous Loop reactor for Eco-friendly Hydrogenation Process and become a key global player for various hydrogenated products. There are few more process innovations that we have introduced in India especially for by-product recovery and reduction of effluents and energy conservation.

We have been able to leverage on sustainability and convert it to our advantage and self-regulation has enabled us to gain the confidence of our customers. Credit also goes to the founders, accomplished technocrats with strong business acumen, who could foresee the changing market trends and nurtured the culture of research and development in the DNA of the organisation.

And now you are getting into Toluene chemistries targeted for the same users as for the benzene derivatives.

Do you see an overlap here and if this will create a challenge internally for the company?

There is no overlap here! Around 75-80 per cent of our specialty products are benzene derivatives and now we are getting into toluene chemistries, which have their own specific downstream usage. Though the products are targeted for the same end use industry it does not mean replacing the existing products but the intent is to expand product portfolio by leveraging on chemistries and customer base which will be a win-win situation for us as well as our customers.

What are your thoughts on the Make in India campaign and its impact on the specialty chemicals industry?

Overall, it will be a very good move if the end users come and invest in India since this will create more opportunities for specialty chemical manufacturers like us.

For the manufacturers, India will be a good market since the economy is growing, but backward integration may not be a very viable option because of lower volumes since, this makes sense only when the volumes are high. For lower volumes, procurement of chemicals would make economic sense which means good business for specialty chemical manufacturers.

Just to give you an example, one of our customers backward integrated and ended up with the challenge of handling the co-product and still had

to procure product from us. However the government will need to address the challenges of infrastructure and policy related issues to create a level playing field for Indian and international players.

We have established synergistic technology partnerships with international players to develop new product pipelines and R&D will continue to be our core focus area to understand and serve the needs of our customers.

We have backward integrated and positioned ourselves strongly in the market which has been a strong driver for our growth and we are confident to maintain a strong growth momentum in the years to come.

There is significant interest across international companies who are looking at India as an alternative source to procure specialties chemicals to reduce dependency on Chinese market. With the growth of Indian economy, certain import substitutes are witnessing a good demand across end user industries, which was not the case earlier. Many such chemicals will see a positive trend in growth and I believe that we will be able to capitalize on these opportunities.

What are the future plans of Aarti Industries?

Presently, we are trying to stabilize our new plants and working on products for B2B segment to supply in domestic as well as international markets. In the years to come we may get into B2C as well but that is too far at this point of time.

He spoke to Chemical Engineering World on the complexities of global supply chains, the changing roles of procurement personnel and how India can participate more actively as a strategic sourcing partner for global majors.

How have the changing complexities of the world impacted the decision making processes of procurement function across the chemical manufacturers?

The world has never been as complex, as fast and as interconnected as what we see now. If you look at just a decade back, companies used to have sufficient inventory levels that could offset some of the worst of external inputs in their basic economy. But if you compare that with today, the world is becoming more and more volatile to disruptions because of external characteristics and it is very critical for companies to understand and mitigate the risks associated with procurement to avoid any disruption in the supply chains to serve the end – user customers.

How does the change in product portfolio impact the supply chains?

Change in product portfolio is a question of lifecycle adjustments and the supply chains are quite resilient to such fluctuations. At Bayer we decided to change portfolio either for lifecycle adjustments or based on extensive consultation with the regulatory authorities with the aim to put our company on a sustainable path of growth.

We have a strong alignment with our suppliers, and when any such situation arises they also look at such moves as a positive step towards their growth.

How does Bayer go about identifying the partners?

Globally, Bayer has vast experience of working with partners through alliances and strategic partnerships and developed a strong network of preferential suppliers who understand our values and comply with the highest ethical values that we follow across our entire product portfolio. To ensure long term sustainable growth, we have started taking assessment studies for all our vendors across the supply chains globally where we are assessing them in quality, competitiveness and reliability.

Compliance is of pivotal importance and the potential partners need to go through a rigorous selection process. In some cases the process is longer; e.g. where the products require approvals from the regulatory authorities, thus resulting in longer periods for return on investments.

However for the on-site service providers the time barriers are significantly low.

Irrespective of the size, if a supplier wants to grow, becoming better and to doing so in a responsible way, Bayer has the resources that can help to achieve its goals provided the partnership is synergistic and brings value to our business. Having said this, over the years, we have worked with many suppliers who have brought great ideas and expertise to us. Bayer has readily invested time and resources and enabled them to grow. We believe in building new relationships that are of incremental value and also work with the start- ups wherever we see a value proposition. Some of the start-ups have great ideas but they lack the traditional business expertise Bayer enables the start-ups to understand the nuances of doing the business responsibly.

to compliance is very critical for sustainable growth of any organization. Moreover we also look at the willingness amongst the suppliers to innovate and improve systems and processes to be prepared for future prospects. We use our limited resources and invest for making maximum impact for greater good and maximizing the returns.

What are your thoughts on India visvis other markets like China and other markets like Indonesia and Vietnam in the South – East Asia?

We are constantly in quest of right people as well as organizations that offer unique capabilities and can support our mission – ‘Science for a Better Life’ and from this point of view, entire South Asia and India are important for us.

Bayer is operating and marketing its products in India since 1896 and has invested more than USD 500 million in India. We have been committed to serve the Indian market and we are also significantly dependent on Indian operations since we export a very large portion of our finished products to other markets in the world.

What we have observed in India is that it is sometimes difficult to make the suppliers understand that sustainability is a question of viability that goes much beyond the cost.

We have been propagating this thought to our partners and vendors and nearly 70 per cent of the assessed partners have shown the willingness to change but still there are many manufacturers who are averse to understand the importance of sustainability. For us quality has never been a challenge whether we produce in India, China or in any part of the world, since we adhere to uniform compliance standards across all our facilities globally.

The Indian Government has taken huge measures to improve the business environment but I feel there is a dire need to address issues related to logistics, warehousing, ports and roads making the industry cost competitive globally.

China, for example has built excellent infrastructure which makes the Chinese industry highly cost competitive in the international market.

What are your thoughts on impact of Make in India campaign and the Government’s willingness to introduce GST bill?

As a manufacturer or buyer, any support that we get in terms of reducing the administrative barriers is a welcome move which will lead to efficiencies and new ways of making sure that our products get to the market. We serve various world markets through our operations in India and lesser transaction cost, easier processes will enable us to reinvest into the business.

We also expect that the maturity amongst the suppliers will gradually increase and they will be able to deliver greater value to the customers. Overall, I feel these steps to be very positive.

What will be the future trends in procurement?

Sustainability plays a critical role which will not be confined to environment, but also factor the ability to balance profit, people and bring innovations.

Procurement functions will play a critical role in adding value to the companies through maintaining transparency across the supply chain and collaborating with the vendors. Companies will have to get back to basics, focus into what is important and have the capability of predicting more what happens in the future.

Digitization will play a critical role in the years to come as the business and manufacturing processes are getting integrated. In the foreseeable future, the experience for procurement may be something very similar to the experience that the private users have dealing with online portals which offer options of placing the order online, generating invoices, auto payments and tracking the orders etc. Commitment to technology will result in digitization of B2B transactions and enable the industry to tap into those networks which could be part of future networks.

What is the new development in the vacuum pumps sector?

Vacuum Pump industry is fast growing in India. Currently this industry is dominated by foreign players as Vacuum Pumps and related technology is new to our country. How do vacuum pumps have an advantage over steam/water based pumps?

Dry vacuum pumps are a great technical development over the conventional steam/ water based pumps, mainly due to following reasons.

Now, there is a growth in the Indian industries who are gearing up to meet the international levels of design and manufacture and this would result in a good growth in Vacuum Pumps and Blowers, especially when solutions offered are energy efficient and ecofriendly. The general awareness to conserve energy and minimize pollution is a great factor for all companies to switch to modern pumps and blowers, replacing the old inefficient polluting options.

What is the growth potential in emerging markets related to the Blowers industry?

Ans. India is developing at a fast pace and is probably fastest growing economy as on date. Industrial development brings in improved process having least impact on the environment, consuming minimum energy, economical and reliable. Emerging markets, like India, have to go a long way for development of equipment & processes targeting low energy intake, High product quality and Zero effect on environment meeting our PM, Honorable Narendra Modi’s “ZED” concept- Zero Effect Zero Defect vision. Everest is able to offer all the above expectations for their pumps and blowers and expects a good growth in these segments. The same may not be true for industries that are not able to meet the expectations of the industry.

What are the key factors driving the global industrial vacuum pump market?

Compare the chemical industry vacuum pump requirements of Asia Pacific (developing) markets with the US/Europe (developed) markets.

The Indian chemical industry, in the recent years has transformed drastically to meet the international global standards set by the developed market like US & Europe.

There was a time, few years back when developed market products were considered good and developing market product were un-acceptable to that market. The same is not true today, as Indian manufacturers have raised their standard of products and successfully compete at par with developed market products. In order to manufacture such products, the need for good pumps and process plays an important role. Indian Companies have started in investing inhouse R&D and moving away from “copy technology”. Today, we have hundreds of products manufactured in India and accepted well in all developed countries.

What products does Standard offer? such as the pharmaceutical and API/ bulk drugs industrial sector, which is dominant around Standard’s home location of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in South India, helps to future-proof their business and provide a strong foundation of success.

How does Standard differentiate themselves from their competitors?

Once we had a clear understanding of our Groups vision, we then looked into doing the ‘right things’ and define our business ‘purpose’ to fulfill this said vision. We started the Group’s product range by designing, manufacturing and installing innovative stainless steel and glass lined process equipment such as reactors, receivers and storage tanks.

Present market scenario is highly volatile for two main reasons. One is our product value chain start from crude oil which is highly unpredictable. The second reason is global recessionary sentiment linked with political turn moil e.g. BREXIT, winning of Mr Trump in USA, Syria war together with weak banking system of Europe. The situation is not likely to be eased out in 2017 as more challenges are yet to come like election in Germany & France, weak Euro currency, Chinese currency RMB v/s USD, which may affect crude oil price & in turn their value chain products.

What are the new products/services being offered by your company for the industry?

We are focusing on strengthening of our existing resources i.e. sound experience of chemical processes and there by adding further product in vertical value chain like Para Chloro Aniline, 2.6 Di Chloro Para Nitro Aniline, Ortho Nitro Aniline. It will be based on Nitration & Hydrogenation process and shall have end usage applications in Agro & Dyes sector.

We are going with backward integration plan, to have competitive advantage in main raw materials like Chlorine & Hydrogen. Therefore we are moving forward to set up Chloro Alkali plant of capacity of 350 mtd in first phase in Kutch with targeting commercial production by end of 2018. We shall also expand thereafter in downstream product chain based on Chlorination & Hydrogenation process.

What are your expectations in regards to development in the market?

Being in chemical sector we are competing mainly with China. We have an edge over China in terms of better compliance of Safety, Health & Environment standards and hence will have sustainable production.

Shell gas is Ethane rich and hence market dynamics of Ethane value chain product will dramatically change on commissioning of Ethane crackers. It shall also have indirect impact on all Naphtha base value chain products in time to come.

Moreover, in coming time we can expect revolutionary technological development in solar sector, whereby energy cost will go down drastically. Since location of India is one of the best in world, we may get opportunity to have lower energy cost and in turn be more competitive in our product in coming time.

The market scenario and in general the business environment for our business is positive. We expect some trouble in the coming weeks/months due to demonetization which will have an impact on the small end-users generally managed by our dealers. In spite of this we support this government’s initiative and we expect higher growth in future. The recovery of the commodity prices is going to increase our cost and we expect the government to control at least the diesel price in order to maintain the competitiveness of the Indian environment.

There are plenty of opportunities in the Indian Industry today: the need to increase productivity and efficiency offers to Bonfiglioli the best growing environment because our products are designed to respect the high standards used in Europe and US. There is certainly a huge intake of explosion proof equipment from the industrial sectors such as the chemical and pharmaceutical industry whereas there is a dip in the Oil and gas and offshore industry requirements. Also in lighting, it is only the LED technology which is taking precedence over the conventional lighting methods, in almost all sections of the hazardous areas. In the LED technology, again, COB technology (Chip on board) is more trusted than the LED lamps. While there is a stiff competition in the pricing and delivery of the LED Lighting, customers are focussed on getting commitment from the manufacturers regarding the efficiency of the LED Light, life of the LED and the reliability of its uninterrupted working, especially in the critical applications.

From our Indian operations, we are able to cater to the industry, worldwide, which accept the IECEx certified products in their country.

What are the new products/services being offered by your company for the industry?

Mainly, our focus is on the LED Lighting portfolio. Our Management along with the R&D team, are continuously putting in special efforts to develop new and improved LED versions of many of the existing Lighting products, as well as new products altogether. We have already released products in the market using the LED technology, like pendant, floodlighting, linear, clean room luminaires, marine lighting, exit lights, etc. We also are working on country – wise specific requirements with regard to dimensions, mounting methods and certification. Also the dust – hazardous areas in industries are in mind, while capturing business from these specific industries that have potentially hazardous areas due to flammable dusts. While price is one of the major factors influencing decisions, in terms of the LED lighting, product reliability, efficiency of the LED light and long life play a vital role during decision making by the buyers.

What are your expectations in regards to development in the market?

There would be growing acceptance to the IECEx certification for equipment, worldwide.

That would really make manufacturers like us more focussed on better solutions while complying with the IEC standards.

Presently, due to country – wise variance in requirements of product certification, it not only becomes time – consuming to release a product in the market but also adds on to the cost. Presently, in India, the government sector mainly Oil and Gas, is more inclined towards the Indian certification based on Indian standards and so, it is a bit of a challenge for manufacturers like us, to get all equipment, certified additionally, by the Indian laboratories, in spite of them qualifying as per the requirements of ATEX and IECEx. Our appeal is to the Indian authorities and associations to consider equipment having IECEx certification. We are supplying our

Our core focus is on growth of the Organization in India. Our management has set very ambitious targets for sale, which are achievable. We would expand our customer base in India too, since there is a changing trend towards acceptance of the IECEx certified equipment, especially in the private sector of the industries like pharmaceutical, chemical and oil and gas. With an enhanced capacity of manufacturing, we would also be focussing on technical training on the subject for our team members, as we all know that the equipment that goes into the hazardous areas, directly impacts the safety aspects of the plant, the high-end equipment and machinery in the plant and most importantly, the people working there. From India, we would be increasing exports to countries not only in the Asia – Pacific region, but also to the nations in the African continent, where the IECEx – certified equipment is widely accepted. Choosing the Right Vacuum Pump: A Range from Toshniwal House “What’s the best vacuum pump?” is one of those maddening questions that can only be answered with another question such as, “What are you trying to do?” That’s because the real answer is that there is no best pump, and there is no worst pump. The best pump is, and always will be, the pump that does the best job at what you need it to do. Although that answer might seem to be obvious, the question continues to arise. It seems to arise due to the common human need of finding “the” answer to a problem.

There is no single type of pump that will provide all the attributes necessary to meet any and all process requirements.

Although the available varieties of pumps seem to present a puzzling collection of choices, the best choice becomes more and more apparent as you go down the list and remove the pumps that won’t meet your process requirements. This requires a careful analysis of your process

and its pumping needs before you begin the elimination sequence. There are a number of impor tant considerations to keep in mind when boiling down to the final, and best, choice for your process.

Obvious ly, you need to c ons ider the pump’s ability to produce and maintain the ultimate pressure your process requires. The pumping speed vs pressure cur ves usually supplied in the various m a nu fa c t u r e r ’s l i t e ra t u r e n e e d t o b e carefully considered and compared.

The pump must have enough pumping speed to easily achieve and maintain the ultimate pressure required, etc.

Roughing pumps are required by any vacuum process when it’s necessary to reduce the pressure within the chamber from atmospheric pressure. All roughing pumps tend to have their highest pumping speeds at, or near, atmospheric pressure.

As the pressure is reduced by the pump, efficient pumps such as offered by us do not decline in their pumping speed.

All of these points can be garnered by a careful reading of the manufacturer’s data sheets and consulting the experts of vacuum pumps system manufacturers.

MUNSCH’ Non- Metallic Centrifugal Pumps: What Does Quality Mean Anyway?

At MUNSCH we say ‘We are in the highquality segment of non-metallic pumps’.

But – apart from the price – how and where does this make a difference? Why shouldn’t you go for the cheapest one – after all, isn’t it just a plastic pump?

To focus on the details of a centrifugal pump without getting lost, it helps to split the pump into three departments, two of which are the most important: •• Hydraulics – including the volute casing and the impeller.

Hydraulics – The hydraulic part of a centrifugal pump (volute and impeller) is in charge of the acceleration of the incoming liquid, increasing its pressure from a lower level to a higher level at the pump’s discharge. The design, both of the volute and of the impeller, interact and create the pump’s character such as flow capacity, pressure increase, suction behavior and power requirement.

MUNSCH has been using these tools for a long period and – like many other HQ suppliers – could achieve state-of-the-art hydraulic power.

However, we were not satisfied with just adding another notch here and an additional percentage there. In fact, MUNSCH has been investing a lot in R&D to merge the power of high-level CFD with the structural FEM calculations.

This combined method of pump design is not only much more efficient but also much more exact if pumps are supposed to operate at their hydraulic and mechanical limits (e.g. in high temperature applications with low NPSH).

Peristaltic (Hose) Pumps Abaque Series peristaltic (hose) pumps meet the requirements of the chemicals industry. These self-priming pumps can run in forward or reverse and offer suction-lift capabilities to 25.5 ft, as well as the ability to run dry without adversely affecting performance, pressure and accuracy (no slip). Abaque pumps are available in ductile iron and SS construction, allowing higher discharge pressure up to 232 psi (16 bar).

The Abaque Series’ pumping action is achieved by compression of a circular loop of elastomeric hose with two diametrically opposed rotating shoes. This rotational motion forces the fluid in the hose to move ahead of each shoe. WACKER offers LSR that has a low coefficient of friction. SILPURAN 6760/50 cures to form an elastomer with a low friction surface, a property which enables self-adhesive LSRs to be used in novel applications. The silicone adheres readily to selected polyesters such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).

SILPURAN has been designed for injection moulding, making hard/soft components for medical and pharma applications suitable for cost-effective large-scale production.

SILPURAN is an addition-curing silicone rubber. It has two components and once mixed, cures to form a transparent, mechanically robust elastomer with a 50 Shore A hardness. After postcuring, the vulcanizate has a coefficient of friction which is between 50 and 70 per cent lower than that of standard LSRs of comparable hardness. This makes it possible to use liquid silicone rubber in movable-seal applications. The low coefficient of friction also facilitates the fitting of silicone components into medical devices.

SILPURAN was specifically designed for the production of parts comprising hard/soft combinations such as those used in the pharma and medical sectors. They are often made from a hard thermoplastic, which determines the shape, encased in a soft plastic layer. SILPURAN can be used to cost-effectively injection mould these parts in large series.As a self-adhesive grade, SILPURAN adheres readily to selected polyesters, such as PBT, a thermoplastic often used in injection moulding.

SILPURAN meets selected test requirements of ISO 10993 and United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Class VI. Postcured parts are suitable for foodcontact applications and can be used under the recommendations of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The manufacturing process for all SILPURAN silicone products entails ultrafine filtration, visual inspection and cleanroom packaging in antistatic materials. This ensures that SILPURAN meets the special purity requirements of the food and medical-technology sectors.

Infrared Camera LumaSense Technologies, Inc offers the next generation ThermalSpection 724 substation asset monitoring system that includes a hardened enclosure with thermal and visual imagers mounted on a pan-tilt positioner. Project Update CEW New Contracts/Expansions/Revamps The following list is a brief insight into the latest new projects by various companies in India.

CHEMICALS M Chemicals proposes an expansion from 10-TPM to 35-TPM of its synthetic organic chemicals manufacturing unit in GIDC Sachin, district: Surat, Gujarat. The estimated cost of the expansion is ` 12-million. The current status of the project could not be ascertained. According to MoEF sources, EIA report has been prepared by Aqua-Air Environmental Engineers. The existing plant manufactures 10-TPM 6-Nitro, 1-Diazo, 2-Napthol, 4-Sulphonic Acid. The expansion entails addition of new products namely, 25-TPM G-Salt, R-Salt, Amido G-Acid, Aniline 2,4 DSA, Aniline 2,5 DSA, Para Nitro Chloro Benzoyl Sulphonic Acid, Sulfo Tobias Acid, Para Cresidine Ortho Sulphonic Acid, Schaffer’s Acid, Broenner’s Acid. Total plot area is approximately 1,650-sq m, out of which, 300-m 2 has been used for green belt development.

5-KLD effluent will be treated in-house ETP and 10-KLD effluent will be sent to common MEE of MEPL for evaporation.

Modvadar, district: Kutch, Gujarat. The current status of the project could not be ascertained. According to MoEF sources, existing products are 3-million sq m per month plywood, flush door, block board and veneer. The manufactured resin will be used for in-house consumption at the wood products plant. The project will come up on 11,603.62-sq m of existing land. The greenbelt area is 600-sq m. A base platform will be constructed for the resin plant; remaining will be MS structure.

Mamta Texdyes (Samba) proposes a synthetic organic chemicals manufacturing unit in GIDC Sarigam, district: Valsad, Gujarat.

The project is spread over 2,250-sq m. The estimated cost of the project is ` 32-million. The current status of the project could not be ascertained. According to SEIAA sources, Eco Chem Sales Services is the environmental consultant. The proposed products are 200-TPM sulphur black grains, 300-TPM sulphur black liquid and the by-products are 250.1-TPM sodium thio sulphate crystal and 47.12-TPM sodium chloride salt. 700-sq m area has been proposed for green belt development. Industrial waste water will be treated in primary and tertiary treatment plant and treated waste water will be discharged into CETP Sarigam.

Eternis Fine Chemicals proposes an expansion of synthetic organic chemicals manufacturing unit from 42,200-TPA to 60,000-TPA in MIDC Kurkumbh, district: Pune, Maharashtra.

The current status of the project could not be ascer tained.

According to MoEF sources, total land area is 100,400-sq m and built-up area is 42,710-sq m. 33 per cent will be developed as green belt area. The project will entail: 1) capacity expansion of existing products and by-products; 2) addition of similar products and by-products; 3) introduction of new eco-friendly biomass boiler as replacement to furnace oil. Project involves manufacturing of fragrance from organic raw materials by chemical process like hydrogenation, esterification, Diels-Alder reaction, cyclisation, dehydrogenation, aldol condensation, etc, followed by distillation to match precise quality standards. By-products capacity will be augmented from 11,400-TPA to 20,000-TPA. The estimated cost of the project is ` 1,050-million. The power requirement 12,000KVA will be available through Government Electricity Board.

Resipol Adhesives proposes an expansion of synthetic organic chemicals manufacturing unit in village: Rajpur, district: Mehsana, Gujarat. The estimated cost of the expansion is ` 40-million. The current status of the project could not be ascertained. According to SEAC sources, the manufacturing of existing products, 2.0TPM benzyl alcohol, 1.1-TPM benzyl benzoate, 3.0-TPM benzoic acetate, 1.4-TPM sodium benzoate, 1.8-TPM sodium acetate will be discontinued and 300-TPM polyester resins (different grades) and alkyd resins (different grades), 90-TPM melamine formaldehyde resin and 85-TPM urea formaldehyde resin will be manufactured as new products. The plot area is approximately 6,033.00-sq m. Unit has proposed 2,000-sq m area for green belt development. Industrial effluent of 0.42-KLD after primary treatment will be evaporated in kettle type evaporator. Two DG sets each of 65-KVA will be provided. It was decided to recommend the project to SEIAA, Gujarat for grant of environmental clearance.

Royal Wood proposes a 90-TPM phenol formaldehyde resin, urea formaldehyde resin, melamine urea formaldehyde resin and melamine formaldehyde resin manufacturing unit in village:

Panoli Intermediates (India) proposes an expansion of its specialty chemicals manufacturing unit and a new 10-MW coal-based captive power project in Unit-III, GIDC Nandesari, district: Vadodara, Gujarat. The estimated cost of the project is ` 100-million. The current status of the project could not be ascer tained. According to MoEF sources, the total plot area is 15,480-sq m. The capacity of isomers and DNCB such as 2:4 DCNB, 2:6 DCNB, 2:5 DCNB is to be augmented from 200-TPM to 2,200-TPM, or tho anisidine/para anisidine from 100-TPM to 1,100-TPM, or tho nitro aniline/para nitro aniline from 300-TPM to 2,300-TPM, isomers of DCA from 80-TPM to 1,080-TPM, isomers and DCNB such as 2:3 DCNB, 2:5 DCNB. isomers of DCNB such as 2:3 DCNB, 2:5 DCNB, 3:4 DCNB from 200-TPM to 2,200-TPM, H-acid from 50-TPM to 500-TPM and addition of a new product namely, 1,500-TPM derivatives of nitro phenol and a new 10-MW coal-based captive power project. 10-MW power requirement is to be met from MGVCL and 10-MW from the captive power project. The effluent will be treated in proposed effluent treatment plant.
