Un inno ad un uomo, un’icona del genio italiano nel mondo, un grande creativo, straordinario artista, raffinato e profondo cultore dell’eleganza maschile.

Celebriamo l’incommensurabile Vittorio De Sica, in occasione del centoventesimo anniversario dalla sua nascita, il 7 luglio del 1901.

Lo celebriamo lungo il solco della nostra passione per il grande cinema d’autore, testimoniata nei decenni con numerose collaborazioni alla produzione di celebri capolavori del grande schermo, e la via dei ricordi che conduce sino alla meravigliosa Sorrento di Pane, amore e… Pellicola a cui ci siamo ispirati per rendere omaggio a uno dei più venerati protagonisti degli anni d’oro del cinema italiano e internazionale, il cui volto definisce subito l’immagine di un’Italia colma di passioni e vitalità.

Il suo è un nome senza tempo, legato a una brillante, unica, carriera cinematografica, che passò dallo schermo alla macchina da presa, lasciando il segno nell’immaginario collettivo, riuscendo a scolpire nella memoria ritratti davvero indelebili di un’epopea tutta italiana. Come pochi, Vittorio De Sica, è stato in grado di guardare negli occhi del suo tempo, per restituire allo schermo quella stessa realtà dal sapore amaro e di cui si fece portavoce con una straordinaria poetica neorealista nel dopoguerra, di cui Umberto D. e Ladri di Biciclette sono solo alcuni tra i più celebri capolavori.

«Se per gli italiani il neorealismo è Rossellini, per gli americani è De Sica» ebbe a dire Orson Welles per il quale, senza ipocrisia alcuna, Sciuscià era il film più bello del mondo. Eccessi e artifici retorici non facevano parte del suo repertorio stilistico, erano nient’altro che mistificazioni di una realtà che in tutta la sua crudezza andava indagata, rappresentata, mai manipolata. In lui non vi era furbizia o trucchetto alcuno, neanche quando, scherzando, diceva al figlio Christian: «Ricordati, prima di entrare in scena, un’ombra di grigio sulle palpebre». Vittorio era vero sul grande schermo come nella vita.

Un uomo dalla proverbiale eleganza, dalla generosa ilarità, che sapeva rivelare di sé, candidamente, anche i più grandi difetti, gli incorreggibili vizi: «il vero signore lo si vede al tavolo da giuoco» era solito ripetere, non facendo mistero della sua passione-ossessione per il gioco d’azzardo. Eppure, anche da questo “vizietto”, seppe ricavare il meglio, cucendosi addosso la parte dell’incallito e perdente Dino della Fiaba in Montecarlo e del Conte Max nell’omonima pellicola.

Guardando le vecchie immagini che lo ritraggono nella vita privata o sul set, rese indimenticabili da innumerevoli interpretazioni magistrali, viene un po’ di nostalgia. Perché De Sica fu artista cinematografico e grande uomo di stile senza eguali, un faro che oggi illuminerebbe più che mai.

Il patrimonio che lascia è quello di una vita tutta all’italiana, di cui era profondamente innamorato, soprattutto di quella Napoli che fece sua nella parlata e in molti suoi film, da Matrimonio all’italiana a Ieri, oggi e domani, passando proprio per l’iconica Sorrento di Pane, amore e…

An ode to a man, an icon of Italian genius the world over, a great creative, a remarkable artist, and a sophisticated and keen enthusiast of male elegance.

One hundred and twenty years on from his birth on 7 July 1901, we are celebrating the incredible Vittorio De Sica.

SCANDAL IN SORRENTO AND TIMELESS ELEGANCE.

This celebration follows our passion for arthouse cinema, illustrated over the decades by numerous collaborations on acclaimed cinematic masterpieces.

We take a trip down memory lane to the stunning Sorrento of Scandal in Sorrento, and it was this film that provided inspiration for a tribute to one of the most esteemed names from the golden age of Italian and international cinema, the face that instantly defines the image of an Italy bursting with vitality and passion.

This timeless name is connected to a brilliant cinematic career like no other, a career that unfolds both in front of and behind the camera and leaves its mark in the collective consciousness, creating truly unforgettable portraits of a very Italian narrative. Like few others, Vittorio De Sica was able to look his era square in the eye and bring its bitter reality to the screen. His extraordinary post-war neorealist narrative made him a spokesperson for his times and includes films such as Umberto D. and Bicycle Thieves, some of his most highly acclaimed works.

“If neorealism for Italians means Rossellini, for Americans it means De Sica”, Orson Welles is quoted as saying and, in all sincerity, for him Sciuscià was the greatest film in the world.

Excess and rhetorical artifice had no part in his stylistic repertoire; these were nothing more than mystifications of a reality that should be explored and laid bare in its harsh entirety and in all honesty. There was no shrewdness, no trickery with him, not even when he jokingly told his son Christian: “Remember to always apply a trace of grey to the eyelids before going on set”. Vittorio was as real on the big screen as he was in life.

A man of proverbial elegance with a very joyful nature, he knew how to openly reveal even his greatest flaws and most irredeemable vices. “It’s when you’re playing that you can spot a real man”, he often said, not concealing his compulsive love of gambling. Yet even this little vice was something he was able to make the most of, playing the defeated hardened gambler Dino della Fiaba in Montecarlo and the character of Count Max in the film of the same name.

A certain sense of nostalgia is brought on looking at old images of him in his private life and on set, unforgettable images from countless masterful performances. For De Sica was a movie artist and an unparalleled arbiter of style, a beacon that would shine brighter than ever today. The legacy he has left is the legacy of a life lived Italian style and one he felt a great love for. This was particularly true where Naples was concerned and his love for the city came out in the way he spoke and in many of his films, from Marriage Italian Style to Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, and the iconic Sorrento of Scandal in Sorrento.

Vestiva con la disinvoltura e l’ottemperanza di un amabile gentiluomo, il Maestro Vittorio De Sica.

Indimenticabili gli abiti color crema, con quelle morbide spalle che si fecero paladine di una nascente sartoria italiana, o meglio propriamente napoletana, per essere più precisi. E, neanche a dirlo, tra i suoi preferiti sarti partenopei, spicca proprio il nome del grande Maestro della sartoria napoletana, Vincenzo Attolini, creatore della prima giacca destrutturata della storia, ad inizio anni Trenta, poi per sempre definita “alla napoletana”, padre di Cesare e nonno di Massimiliano e Giuseppe Attolini.

Il “Sig. di De Sico”, come lo chiamavano a Napoli, amava prendersi cura di ogni dettaglio. È, infatti, guardando le sue foto, sul set e nella vita privata, che riusciamo a scorgere un Vittorio De Sica in abiti dal taglio curato, disinvolto ma impeccabile, fedora e cravatta mai sciupata.

Un’eleganza che parla di una sobrietà assoluta, da vero signore.

Un’eleganza che oggi amiamo definire “senza tempo”. Iconica, impeccabile, perché innata e spontanea. Tutto di lui, ogni gesto, ogni sguardo, ogni sorriso, parlava con i codici di quell’autentico e ammaliante linguaggio.

His cream suits were unforgettable and featured soft shoulders that championed the origins of Italian tailoring. Neapolitan tailoring to be precise. “Mr di De Sico”, as he was called in Naples, had a real eye for detail. In photos taken on set

or in his private life, Vittorio De Sica can be seen nonchalantly but impeccably dressed in exquisitely tailored suits complete with fedora and tie.

His is an elegance that speaks of absolute sobriety. The elegance of a real gentleman.

It is an elegance we now like to call “timeless”. It is innate and spontaneous and therefore iconic and impeccable. Everything about him, every gesture, every expression, every smile, spoke that authentic and irresistible language.

Il cavalier Antonio Carotenuto, congedatosi dall'Arma dei Carabinieri, lascia la piccola località di Sagliena per giungere nella meravigliosa Sorrento - altra protagonista del film insieme alla stupenda, indimenticabile, Sophia Loren per dirigere la locale stazione dei vigili urbani.

Al suo arrivo, il maresciallo, nonostante sia proprietario di un suo appartamento, viene ospitato in casa della bigotta Donna Violante e sedotto dalla pescivendola di Marina Grande, Donna Sofia, che ha già un innamorato, Nicolino. Sofia mira soltanto a non lasciare l'appartamento del comandante di cui è inquilina. A sorvegliare sulla condotta morale di Carotenuto provvedono sia la domestica Caramella che il fratello sacerdote Matteo.

Nonostante l'avventura amorosa con Donna Sofia si concluda male per l'ex maresciallo, egli avrà modo di fidanzarsi con Donna Violante, la quale, grazie all'aiuto di Caramella, riuscirà ad attirare a sé le attenzioni del comandante.

Una scena su tutte è rimasta indelebile nell’immaginario collettivo, quella in cui De Sica e la Loren ballano un mambo. Diventata, nel corso dei decenni, simbolo della commedia italiana anni Cinquanta, contribuendo a rendere la canzone Mambo italiano famosa in tutto il mondo.

Per la sua interpretazione straordinaria, Vittorio De Sica, nel 1956, fu premiato con il David di Donatello come Miglior Attore Protagonista.

Retired carabinieri marshal Antonio Carotenuto leaves the little village of Sagliena and is sent to the beautiful town of Sorrento (the other big star of the film alongside the incredible, unforgettable Sophia Loren) to head up the local municipal police.

The romantic liaison with Donna Sofia ends badly for the former marshal, but he ends up getting together with Violante, who joins forces with Caramella and manages to win him over.

La pellicola è la terza, in ordine cronologico, della tetralogia: preceduta da Pane, amore e fantasia del 1953 e Pane, amore e gelosia del 1955 – diretti entrambi da Luigi Comencini – e seguito da Pane, amore e Andalusia del 1958, diretto da Javier Setò, con la supervisione di Vittorio De Sica.

Tutti e quattro i film narrano proprio le vicende di Antonio Carotenuto, interpretato sempre da Vittorio De Sica, prima maresciallo e poi cavaliere, sempre alle prese con vicende amorose da donnaiolo incallito e senza speranza. Se nei primi due film se la vede con la bersagliera, interpretata da Gina Lollobrigida, in questo si imbatte nel focoso personaggio della smargiassa, interpretata da Sophia Loren, nel pieno della sua procace bellezza.

Il film è stato realmente girato sia per gli esterni che per gli interni nel luogo in cui il regista Dino Risi lo ha ambientato. Le avventure del Carotenuto Cavalier Antonio – così come suole auto presentarsi il personaggio di De Sica al ritorno in quella che è la sua cittadina natale – hanno come sfondo una Sorrento calda, florida, sgargiante, con il suo distintivo folclore e le sue eleganti case nobiliari, ricolme di mobili e suppellettili creati dall’impareggiabile artigianato locale.

Pane, amore e… contrappone, infatti, al paesaggio tipicamente popolare e marinaro, quello sontuoso e tardo barocco della villa dove viene ospitato il maresciallo Carotenuto con la balia, interpretata da Tina Pica: Villa Giuseppina a Meta di Sorrento, detta anche Villa Cosenza, di scuola vanvitelliana e edificata nel 1739. Dino Risi ricorda, in un’intervista, che all’epoca “Iniziava il boom del turismo e Sorrento -così come Capri, Ravello e la Costiera Amalfitana era conosciutissima all’estero, tappa obbligata dei viaggi di turisti americani ed europei per le bellezze naturali e l’atmosfera che aveva stregato nel tempo artisti come Cechov e Caruso. Nei mesi in cui il film fu girato, Sorrento aveva ancora un sapore antico, c’erano in giro poche automobili ma tante carrozzelle per turisti con festoni, limoni, arance”.

Il palazzo dove è ambientata la casa oggetto del contendere, esiste ancora oggi e si trova proprio qui, a via Sopra le Mura, nella Marina Grande di Sorrento. Un altro luogo centrale, anche a livello drammaturgico dell’intera pellicola, sono i Bagni della Regina Giovanna. Il loro nome è dovuto alla sovrana di Napoli, Giovanna D’Angiò che tra il 1371 e il 1435 sembrava si recasse proprio qui in villeggiatura. Sembrerebbe, inoltre, L’antico borgo, set cinematografico negli che proprio qui la Regina avrebbe avuto anni ’50, si apre su Via Sopra le Mura, una atteggiamenti scandalosi, intrattenendosi con passeggiata a picco sulle rocce di Sorrento, i suoi giovani amanti.

Un posto magico, una piscina naturale situata fatta di scalinate tra case e archi.

Esistono ancora oggi le location del film, dove la smargiassa, ovvero la pescivendola spavalda interpretata dalla Loren, oggi cittadina onoraria di Sorrento, trascorreva le giornate.

Dino Risi recalls in an interview how at the time “the boom in tourism was beginning and Sorrento (like Capri, Ravello and the Amalfi Coast) was extremely popular overseas. It was a must-see destination for American and European tourists, who were drawn to its natural beauty and the atmosphere that had enchanted artists such as Chekhov and Caruso over the years. In the months when filming took place, Sorrento still had an oldworld charm to it; they’re weren’t many cars on the roads just horse-drawn carts adorned with garlands, lemons and oranges”.

Today it is still possible to visit these film locations and see the places where the brash fish vendor played by Loren, now honorary citizen of Sorrento, would spend her days.

The old town, a movie set in the 1950s, opens up onto Via Sopra le Mura, a path overlooking the Sorrento cliffs, with steps connecting houses and archways on different levels.

After going beyond a double arch, we are met with the sight of Vesuvius, and immediately after this the boats bring us back to the atmosphere of the ancient town. Heading on

down to the sea, we come across a little area dedicated to the film, with photos of its most iconic scenes and its stars, now firmly entwined with the history of this place. The building where Loren’s character lives still exists today and can be found right here on Via Sopra le Mura, in Sorrento’s Marina Grande. This is also where Sofia is seen selling fresh fish and the location of the lively little port, now characterised by its coffee bar and gelato parlours.

Another key location in the film, and key to the film’s plot too, is Bagni della Regina Giovanna.

The name stems from the Queen of Naples, Giovanna D’Angiò, who would seemingly come here to holiday between 1371 and 1435.

Apparently, this was also the place where the Queen was involved in some rather scandalous behaviour while entertaining her young lovers.

It is a magical spot, a natural pool situated amid the rocky limestone cliffs of Puolo, halfway between Sorrento and Massa Lubrense. It was here among the rocks that Dino Risi chose to set the memorable scene in which Sophia Loren and Vittorio De Sica meet up in secret.
