L’ARTE COME VIA MAESTRA.

Se l’arte in generale si riferisce a un certo sapere unito a una certa abilità, l’arte in senso estetico non sembra definibile propriamente né come sapere né come abilità, condizioni necessarie ma non sufficienti della sua possibilità e del suo modo di funzionare. Il riferimento alle nozioni di genio o di creatività, che comincia a delinearsi a partire dalla fine del Sedicesimo secolo, è infatti un segnale di questo suo statuto, implicante anche una classificazione ad hoc delle arti in senso estetico.

In altre parole, ormai il parlante, anche senza uno specifico riferimento all’estetica, alle teorie dell’arte, della letteratura e a esplicite assunzioni culturali, sembra supporre, da una parte, un campo semantico riferibile all’arte in generale e, dall’altra, un campo speciale, quello dell’arte in senso estetico, irriducibile al primo.

Tale distinzione è relativamente moderna. Tuttavia, essa viene avvertita, anche se in modo non necessariamente coerente e non nella parola stessa, fin dall’antichità.

Sembra indicarlo la discussione platonica, che suppone una identificazione di certe arti, in senso estetico, non omologa rispetto a quella dello statuto delle cosiddette arti imitative (l’arte del poeta o del pittore) di contro alle arti in generale (l’arte del pescatore o del falegname o del sarto), con la conclusione che le prime non sarebbero propriamente arti, in quanto non fondate su un sapere specifico. Già con Aristotele l’identificazione del campo delle arti in senso estetico si fa più coerente e più ferma; ma è soprattutto con l’affermarsi in età moderna di una prospettiva teorica estetica, che suppone a sua volta un lungo travaglio di assestamento culturale e una profonda trasformazione della distinzione tra arti liberali e arti meccaniche, che quella identificazione tende quasi a istituzionalizzarsi.

Lontana dalle nostre intenzioni v’è quella di definire la nostra opera quotidiana come arte. Tuttavia, il nostro agire ogni giorno nasce proprio da un sapere pregnante, unico, e tende all’atto della creazione a partire da un senso estetico alto e altrettanto ideale. È l’idea di arte platonica, dunque, che nutre e guida la nostra creatività manuale, meccanica, ogni giorno. Ma è, al contempo, l’idea aristotelica stessa d’arte che guida quella meccanicità, quel saper fare da arte minore, nel riuscire a creare opere, i nostri capi, che spesso sono spontaneamente definiti dei veri e propri capolavori d’arte!

While art generally refers to a certain kind of knowledge combined with a certain kind of ability, art from an aesthetic standpoint cannot be properly defined, neither as knowledge nor as ability, elements which are necessary yet not sufficient for it to exist and function. References to notions of genius or creativity, which began to take shape at the end of the 16th century were, in fact, a sign of this statute, and also implied an ad hoc aesthetic classification of art.

In other words, the speaker, even without a specific reference to aesthetics, to art theory, to literature, or to explicit cultural assumptions, began to support, on the one hand, a semantic field that referred to art in general and, on the other hand, a special field that referred to art in terms of aesthetics, the latter being irreducible to the former. This distinction is relatively modern. Nevertheless, it can be detected, though not necessarily consistently and not in the word itself, since ancient times.

This seems to be indicated in Plato’s dialogues, which assume an aesthetic identification of certain art forms which does not correspond to that of the statute of the socalled imitative arts (the art of the poet or of the painter) as opposed to the arts in general (the art of the fisherman or the carpenter or the tailor), with the conclusion that the first are not truly art because they are not based on a specific skill. With Aristotle, the identification of the arts from an aesthetic standpoint became firmer and more coherent, but it was primarily with the establishment of an aesthetic theoretical perspective in the modern age (which in turn presumes a profound transformation in the distinction between liberal and mechanical arts) that this definition tended almost to become institutionalised.

It is far from our intention to define our day-to-day work as art. Nevertheless, our actions every day stem precisely from meaningful and unique knowledge and tend towards the act of creation based on an equally elevated and ideal sense of aesthetics. It is, therefore, the Platonic idea of art that nurtures and guides our manual and mechanical creativity each day. But at the same time, it is the Aristotelian idea of art which guides that mechanical skill, that ability to make minor art, that is necessary for the creation of our garments, which are often spontaneously defined actual artistic masterpieces!

Napoli è una città dalle stratificazioni storiche e archeologiche sorprendenti.

Poco sopravvive di “Partenope”: la città greca delle origini è rintracciabile, ad esempio, nelle mura greche che passano per via Mezzocannone. Le rovine romane sono, invece, più numerose: tra le tante, è situata in pieno centro l’area archeologica di San Lorenzo Maggiore, che ospita parte dell’agorà greca del V sec. a.C. e molti reperti romani di un'epoca in cui la città era già una ‘metropoli’. È una città antichissima: alcune tombe risalenti al periodo neolitico e ritrovate nel quartiere di Materdei provano che dei piccoli insediamenti nella città ci furono già in epoca preistorica. La nascita della città, tuttavia, non è databile con assoluta certezza. Forse, anche per questo motivo, sono numerose le leggende che cercano di spiegarne l’origine; numerose sì,

ma tutte con un personaggio comune: la bella sirena Partenope. Una di tali leggende narra che la sirena, rifiutata dall’eroe omerico Ulisse, decise di approdare sull’isolotto di Megaride, dove attualmente ha sede Castel dell’Ovo: fu lì che sorse la città. La storia, invece, racconta che proprio tra l'isolotto di Megaride e il Monte Echia si stabilirono alcuni coloni cumani, fondando un piccolo agglomerato che chiamarono Partenope (VII secolo a.C.). Nel 475 a.C. i cumani, a causa delle frequenti battaglie con gli Etruschi, decisero di fondare un’altra città in una zona più interna, corrispondente all’odierno centro storico: tale città venne ribattezzata Neapolis (città nuova) affinché venisse distinta da Partenope che, intanto, s’era guadagnata il nome di Palepolis (città vecchia).

Naples is a city with many surprising historical and archaeological layers. Little remains today of “Parthenope”: a city of Greek origin, the traces of which can be seen, for example, in the Greek walls that pass through Via Mezzocannone. The city’s Roman ruins, on the other hand, are much more abundant. One of these is the archaeological site of San Lorenzo Maggiore, situated in the centre of Naples, which houses part of the 5th century BC Greek Agora and many Roman relics dating from the era in which the city was already a ‘metropolis’.

Naples is an ancient city. Tombs found in the Materdei neighbourhood and dating back to the Neolithic period prove that small settlements were already present during prehistoric times.

Nevertheless, the birth of the city cannot be dated with absolute certainty. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why numerous legends

exist which attempt to explain its origins.

Numerous, yet all with a single common character: the beautiful siren, Parthenope.

According to one of these legends, the siren, rejected by Homer’s hero, Ulysses, washed up on the islet of Megaride, where the Castel dell’Ovo is located. It was here that the city was born. However, historical records indicate that it was between the islet of Megaride and Mt. Echia that several Cuman colonies were first established, creating a small agglomeration which they called Parthenope (7th century BC). In 475 BC the Cumans, due to frequent conflicts with the Etruscans, decided to found another city a bit more inland, corresponding to today’s historic centre. This city was renamed Neapolis (new city) to distinguish it from Parthenope which, in the meantime, had acquired the name Palepolis (old city).

È la città artistica per eccellenza. Patria nativa o adottiva di artisti tra i più insigni, come Dante, Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Galileo Galilei, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Botticelli, Donatello, Giotto, per citare i più celebri.

Un’eredità culturale e artistica quasi unica in Europa e nel mondo, che pone le sue radici nel Medioevo e fa spiccare le sue ali durante il Rinascimento.

Questo nuovo linguaggio figurativo, legato anche a un diverso modo di pensare l'uomo e il mondo, prese le mosse dalla cultura locale e dall'umanesimo, che già nel secolo precedente era stato portato alla ribalta da personalità come Francesco Petrarca o Coluccio Salutati. Le novità, proposte nei primissimi anni del XV secolo da maestri quali Filippo Brunelleschi, Donatello e Masaccio, non furono immediatamente accolte dalla committenza, anzi rimasero almeno per un ventennio un fatto artistico minoritario e in larga parte incompreso, a fronte dell'allora dominante gotico internazionale. In seguito, il Rinascimento divenne il linguaggio figurativo più apprezzato e iniziò a trasmettersi anche alle

altre corti italiane, prime fra tutte quella papale di Roma, e poi europee, grazie agli spostamenti degli artisti. Lo stile del Rinascimento fiorentino, dopo i primordi del primo ventennio del Quattrocento, si diffuse con entusiasmo fino alla metà del secolo, con esperimenti basati su un approccio tecnico-pratico; la seconda fase ebbe luogo all'epoca di Lorenzo il Magnifico, dal 1450 circa fino alla sua morte nel 1492, e fu caratterizzata da una sistemazione invece più intellettualistica.

Seguì un momento di rottura, dominato dalla personalità di Girolamo Savonarola, che segna profondamente molti artisti convincendoli a un ripensamento delle loro scelte. L'ultima fase, databile tra il 1490 e il 1520, è detto Rinascimento "maturo", e vede la presenza a Firenze di tre geni assoluti dell'arte, che tanto influenzarono le generazioni a venire: Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti e Raffaello Sanzio.

It is the art city par excellence, the native or adopted home of some of the most illustrious artists the world has ever known: Dante, Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Galileo Galilei, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Botticelli, Donatello, Giotto, to name the most famous.

Florence boasts a cultural and artistic patrimony like none other in Europe or the world, which took root in the Middle Ages and spread its wings during the Renaissance.

This new figurative language, associated also with a new way of perceiving man and the world, was inspired by both the local culture and humanism, which had already been brought to the forefront in the previous century by individuals like Francesco Petrarca and Coluccio Salutati. The new artistic styles introduced at the start of the 15th century by masters like Filippo Brunelleschi, Donatello, and Masaccio, did not immediately receive patronage. On the contrary, next to the dominant international Gothic style of the time, they remained of minor artistic relevance and were largely misunderstood for at least twenty years. Later, the Renaissance style

became the more admired figurative language and started appearing not only in other Italian courts (most notably the Papal court of Rome), but, thanks to the artists’ movements, courts throughout Europe as well. After the first twenty years of the 15th century, Florentine Renaissance style spread rapidly until the middle of the century, with experiments based on a technical-practical approach. The second phase began in the time of Lorenzo de' Medici, approximately 1450 until his death in 1492, and was characterised by a more intellectual approach.

What followed was a break from the past, dominated by figures like Girolamo Savonarola, who profoundly influenced many artists, convincing them to rethink their choices. The final phase, dating between 1490 and 1520, is known as the Late Renaissance, and is characterised by the presence, in Florence, of three absolute artistic geniuses whose influence would be felt for generations to come: Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Raffaello Sanzio.

Alcune città italiane hanno un soprannome che ne ricorda l’origine storica o che le descrive: Roma, “la città Eterna”; Venezia, “la Serenissima”; Firenze, “la Bella”. Bologna di soprannomi ne ha tre: “la Dotta, la Grassa, la Rossa”.

Il primo è dovuto alla presenza di un’università che risale al 1088, la più antica del mondo occidentale; il secondo caratterizza al meglio la tradizione della sua cucina sostanziosa e opulenta; il terzo per i riflessi dei mattoni con i quali fin dal Medioevo sono state costruite torri e palazzi ma, in epoca più recente, il colore rosso ci fa pensare alle “Rosse” Ducati e Ferrari che, assieme a Lamborghini, Maserati e Pagani, fanno di Bologna e della sua regione la “terra dei motori”.

Prima università d’Occidente, fin dal 1088 l’Università di Bologna richiama studenti da tutta Europa. Dai tempi degli illustri Dante, Petrarca e Boccaccio, l’Università di Bologna ha affermato nei secoli il suo ruolo di fucina del sapere e i circa 80.000 che ancor oggi

accoglie, la mantengono viva culturalmente e socialmente. L’antica sede dell’Università, il Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio, ospita uno dei più impressionanti teatri anatomici del mondo, dove si sezionavano i cadaveri durante le lezioni di medicina e anatomia. Significa fare tappa nel luogo che per secoli è stato uno dei principali e più ferventi punti di riferimento del sapere europeo.

Il suo suggestivo centro storico, uno dei meglio conservati d’Europa, dove si elevano antichi palazzi e chiese ricche di opere d’arte, è caratterizzato da 40 chilometri di portici che rendono la città unica al mondo. Fin dal 1100, quando la crescita dell’Università spinse a inventarsi un nuovo spazio urbano, i portici sono diventati un luogo pubblico e privato, di socialità e commercio, salotto all’aperto simbolo stesso dell’ospitalità bolognese. Il portico di San Luca, che lega la città al santuario del Colle della Guardia, è il più lungo al mondo (3.796 metri e 666 arcate).

Some Italian cities have a nickname which refers to their historic origins or which describes them in some way: Rome, “the Eternal City”; Venice, “the Serenissima”; Florence, “la Bella”.

Bologna has three nicknames: “la Dotta, la Grassa, la Rossa” [the Intellectual, the Fat, the Red].

The first is due to the presence of a university which dates back to 1088, the oldest in the western world; the second speaks for its substantial and opulent culinary tradition; the third refers to the colour of the bricks with which its towers and buildings have been built since the Middle Ages and, more recently, the “Reds” Ducati and Ferrari which, together with Lamborghini, Maserati, and Pagani, make Bologna and its region known as the “land of motors”.

The first western school of its kind, the University of Bologna has attracted students from all over Europe since 1088. Thanks to the attendance of illustrious students like Dante, Petrarca, and Boccaccio, the University of Bologna has, over the centuries, affirmed its position as a breeding ground for knowledge, while the approximately 80,000 students

which it currently welcomes keep it culturally and socially alive. The ancient seat of the university, Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio, houses one of the most impressive anatomical theatres in the world, where cadavers were dissected during lessons in medicine and anatomy.

For centuries this location was one of the primary and most devout reference points for European knowledge.

Bologna’s evocative historic centre, one of the most well-preserved in Europe, with ancient buildings and churches that conceal a multitude of artistic masterpieces, is characterised by 40 kilometres of porticos that make the city like none other in the world. Since 1100, when the growth of the university made it necessary to create a new urban area, the porticos have come to be used as both a public and private, social and commercial, space, serving as an open air living room that is the very symbol of Bolognese hospitality. The San Luca Portico, which connects the city to the Sanctuary of San Luca in Colle della Guardia, is the longest in the world, measuring 3,796 meters and with 666 archways.

Unione di Passioni.

Da Bergamo Alta alla Franciacorta, passando per il Lago d’Iseo. Questa regione è unione di molte passioni, quella per i capolavori d’arte, quella per le meraviglie naturalistiche e, non ultima, quella per le bollicine!

La Città Alta di Bergamo è un patrimonio unico d’arte e bellezza senza tempo. Ancor oggi conserva l'assetto delle sue antiche strade e l'atmosfera medievale e rinascimentale evocata da Piazza Vecchia e Piazza del Duomo. Il Palazzo della Ragione e Santa Maria Maggiore portano la memoria indietro nel tempo al periodo comunale, mentre la straordinaria Cappella Colleoni, realizzata per ospitare il Mausoleo del Condottiero e di sua figlia, esprime tutta l'eleganza rinascimentale.

In Piazza Vecchia sorge il Palazzo del Podestà, simbolo del potere veneziano su Bergamo, costruito nel XIV secolo e affrescato dal Bramante nel 1477. I resti di questi preziosi affreschi sono oggi visibili presso la Sala delle Capriate del Palazzo della Ragione.

Di grande fascino è la passeggiata lungo le mura della città, durante la quale si incontrano la cinquecentesca Porta Sant'Agostino,

sormontata dal Leone di Venezia e la Porta Sant'Alessandro, nei pressi della quale nel XIV secolo sorgeva la cittadella voluta dai Visconti.

Grazie all'installazione più virale della storia dell'arte (Floating Piers di Christo), il Lago d’Iseo ha incredibilmente visto crescere la sua notorietà nel mondo. A poco più di mezz’ora di distanza da Bergamo, vanta almeno due borghi nell’area dell’Alto Sebino dal grande valore artistico e paesaggistico: Lovere, tra i più belli d’Italia con la sua ricca Pinacoteca e Pisogne con il suo lungolago da cartolina.

Nel corso dei decenni il clima temperato e piuttosto soleggiato, il terreno fertile e i vasti spazi di campagna hanno reso la Franciacorta, regione che si affaccia proprio sulle rive del lago, luogo ideale per piantare migliaia di vigne ed edificare numerose cantine enologiche produttrici delle bollicine più amate d’Italia, che prendono il nome proprio da questa terra.

L’azione dei ghiacciai ha modellato la regione migliaia di anni fa formando un insieme di avvallamenti e colline simili a quelle toscane e creando una serie di paesaggi rurali dal fascino unico.

From Bergamo Alta to Franciacorta, with Lake Iseo in between. This region represents a union of vastly different passions: those for artistic masterpieces, natural wonders and, last but not least, sparkling wine!

Bergamo, Città Alta, represents a unique patrimony of art and timeless beauty. To this day it preserves the layout of its ancient roads and the medieval and renaissance atmosphere evoked by Piazza Vecchia and Piazza del Duomo. Palazzo della Ragione and Santa Maria Maggiore take us back in time to the communal era of the Middle Ages, while the extraordinary Colleoni Chapel, built to house the mausoleum of the Condottiero and his daughter, represents a quintessential expression of renaissance elegance. Palazzo del Podestà in Piazza Vecchia, built in the 14th century and frescoed by Bramante in 1477, is a symbol of Venetian power over Bergamo. The remains of these precious frescos can today be seen in the Sala delle Capriate in Palazzo della Ragione.

Enormously evocative is the walk around the walls of the city, during which one comes across the 16th century Porta Sant’Agostino,

topped by the Lion of Venice, and the Porta Sant'Alessandro, near which was located the citadel commissioned by Visconti in the 14th Century.

Thanks to the most viral installation in the history of art (the Floating Piers by Christo), Lake Iseo’s world fame has grown exponentially. Just half an hour from Bergamo, it boasts at least two villages of enormous artistic and natural value in the area of Alto Sebino: Lovere, among the most beautiful towns in Italy with its rich art gallery, and Pisogne with its picturesque lakeside waterfront.

Over the course of decades, the mild and sunny climate, fertile terrain, and vast countryside have turned this lakeside region into the perfect place to plant thousands of grape vines and to build numerous wineries producing the most well-loved sparkling wines in Italy, named after Franciacorta itself. The movement of glaciers shaped its geography thousands of years ago, creating a combination of depressions and hills that are similar to those in Tuscany, and creating a rural landscape that is uniquely fascinating.

Una terra tra luna e falò.

Le Langhe. Rinomate soprattutto per i vini e il buon cibo, ma anche per la natura e l’arte.

Una terra che si manifesta stupenda, tra vigneti e borghi medievali, tra paesaggi incontaminati, palazzi patrizi, strade medievali, chiese e castelli di un tempo lontano che si fonde con il presente.

Una terra tutta da attraversare e assaporare.

Alba, certo, è il cuore pulsante di questa zona del Piemonte. È la città rinomata per il tartufo ma non solo. Sì, perché il suo impianto medievale – con le torri e le case fortificate –, il Duomo e la Chiesa di San Domenico la rendono un borgo a dir poco suggestivo.

E poi c’è Barolo. La città conosciuta per il suo vino celebre. Fra una passeggiata e l’altra nella natura, attraverso i vigneti, si può scorgerne il Castello – all’interno c’è il museo del vino – e il borgo medievale. Non a caso, nel 2014, Barolo è stato dichiarato Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Unesco. Il Castello Falletti, appunto, un posto unico: basta salire su in cima per godere della vista delle dolci colline delle Langhe.

C’è poi Bergolo, il paese tutto di pietra; Neive, con le sue trattorie; Bossolasco, col suo delizioso centro storico tutto punteggiato di

rose; Murazzano, celebre per la torre medievale e il suo tipico formaggio; la piccolissima San Benedetto Belbo, dove Beppe Fenoglio trascorreva le vacanze da ragazzo. E, neanche a dirlo, Santo Stefano Belbo, patria si del delizioso Moscato ma, soprattutto, villaggio natìo del celebre scrittore Cesare Pavese che, proprio in questi luoghi, ambientò le vicende del suo ultimo romanzo La Luna e i Falò.

Ma se un tempo queste colline piemontesi si percorrevano esclusivamente guardando indietro, a Pavese e Fenoglio, all’antiquariato e alla tradizione contadina, oggi non è più così ed è l’arte contemporanea, con scrittori e musicisti d’avanguardia, ad occupare la scena. Da tutto il mondo oggi arrivano per visitare la Cappella del Barolo, sulla strada per La Morra, dove una piccola chiesetta mai consacrata (riparo per i vendemmiatori nel Novecento) è stata dipinta da due artisti di fama internazionale. Il primo, l’inglese David Tremlett, a metà degli anni Novanta ha dipinto l’interno con le tonalità dell’Africa e dell’Australia, mentre il secondo, l’americano Sol LeWitt, ha trasformato l’esterno con i suoi famosi wall painting.

The Langhe: known above all for its wine and cuisine, but also for its landscape and art.

A stunning region, full of vineyards and historic villages; its uncontaminated landscape criss crossed by medieval roads and dotted by patrician palaces, churches, and fortresses from a distant past that now blends with the present.

A land with so much to explore and taste. Alba is, of course, the heart of this area of Piedmont.

A city famous for its truffles, as well as for its picturesque historic centre with the Duomo, Church of San Domenico, and medieval layout full of towers and fortified homes.

Then there is Barolo, a town known for its famous wine. In 2014 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While strolling through the natural landscape and traversing vineyards, one may catch a glimpse of the Castello Falletti (with wine museum inside) and medieval village. The castle is a unique structure: climb the stairs to the top to enjoy a view of the gentle hills of the Langhe.

Then there’s Bergolo, the “stone town”; Neive, with its trattorias; Bossolasco, with its charming historic centre dotted with roses;

Murazzano, known for its medieval tower and its typical cheese; and the tiny San Benedetto Belbo, where Beppe Fenoglio spent his summer holidays as a child. And of course Santo Stefano Belbo, the home of delicious Moscato wines, but above all the birthplace of the famous author Cesare Pavese who set the events of his last novel, La Luna e i Falò [The Moon and the Bonfires], here in this very area.

But while the hills of Piedmont were once explored through their history, through Pavese and Fenoglio, through their antiques and their peasant tradition, today this is no longer the case and it is, rather, contemporary art, with its avant garde writers and musicians, who have taken centre stage. These days people come from all over the world to visit the Barolo Chapel, on the road to La Morra, where a small church that was never consecrated (a shelter for 20th century harvesters) was painted by two internationally famous artists. The first, British artist David Tremlett, in the mid-1990s, painted the interior with the colours of Africa and Australia, while the second, American artist Sol LeWitt, transformed the exterior with his famous wall paintings.

Praticamente un museo a cielo aperto: camminare tra le calli della Regina dell’Adriatico significa ammirare senza sosta sontuosi palazzi, edifici storici, meravigliose chiese e case uniche al mondo.

Per le peculiarità urbanistiche e per il suo patrimonio artistico, Venezia è universalmente considerata una delle città più belle del mondo ed è stata dichiarata, con la sua laguna, patrimonio dell’umanità dall’UNESCO. Oltre al Ponte di Rialto, l’altro simbolo di Venezia è indubbiamente Piazza San Marco (si tratta dell’unico spazio urbano di Venezia che assume il nome di piazza, in quanto tutti gli altri spazi in forma di piazza sono propriamente definiti “campi”). Nota anche come “Salotto d’Europa”, Piazza San Marco ospita l’omonima Basilica, superbo esempio di stile romanicobizantino; ispirata alla chiesa dei Dodici Apostoli di Costantinopoli, fu in origine costruita per custodire il corpo dell’evangelista Marco. La facciata è decorata da preziosi marmi e mosaici ed è divisa in due parti da una terrazza, sulla quale poggiano i quattro cavalli di rame dorato inviati

da Costantinopoli al doge Enrico Dandolo nel 1204. L’imponente interno, a croce greca, è ricco di dipinti e sculture; il campanile, a fianco della basilica, era un tempo faro per i naviganti.

Sulla destra della basilica è possibile visitare il Palazzo Ducale, anticamente Palazzo Dogale in quanto sede del Doge, capolavoro del gotico veneziano. Gli interni, che sono stati in parte privati delle opere che li decoravano, conservano ancora un’ampia pinacoteca, che comprende opere realizzate da maestri come Tintoretto, Tiziano Vecellio, Paolo Veronese.

Il Palazzo Ducale ha seguito la storia della Serenissima e oggi ospita il Museo Civico di Palazzo Ducale, parte della Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.

A pochi minuti di traghetto da Venezia si giunge a Murano, la seconda isola più grande della Laguna proprio dopo Venezia, celebre in tutto il mondo per la sua ultracentenaria tradizione artigianale della soffiatura del vetro, ancora oggi la principale attività economica dell’isola.

Basically an open air museum: strolling through the narrow streets and alleyways of Venice, the queen of the Adriatic, means continuously admiring lavish palaces, historic buildings, marvellous churches, and one of a kind homes.

Because of its unique urban features and its rich artistic patrimony, Venice is universally considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world and has been declared, with its lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Alongside the Rialto Bridge, the other symbol of Venice is undoubtedly Piazza San Marco (the only urban space in Venice called a piazza, in that all of the other such spaces in Venice are called “campi”). Also known as the “Living Room of Europe”, Piazza San Marco houses St. Mark’s Basilica, a superb example of Romanesque-Byzantine style. Inspired by the Church of the Twelve Apostles in Constantinople, it was originally built to house the body of Mark the Evangelist. The facade is decorated with precious marbles and mosaics and divided in two parts by a terrace, on which rest the four golden copper horses sent from

Constantinople to Doge Enrico Dandolo in 1204. The monumental interior, shaped like a Greek cross, is rich in paintings and sculptures.

The bell tower next to the basilica was once a light house for sailors.

To the right of the basilica, one can visit the Ducal Palace (formerly the Doge’s Palace as it was the seat of the Doge), a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture. The interiors, which have been partially stripped of the artwork that once decorated them, still house a large art collection which includes pieces by masters like Tintoretto, Tiziano Vecellio, and Paolo Veronese. The Ducal Palace has followed in the footsteps of the Serenissima and today houses the Civic Museum of the Ducal Palace, part of the Civic Museums Foundation of Venice.

Just a few minutes away from Venice by ferry is Murano, the second largest island in the lagoon after Venice and world famous for its multi-century artisan tradition of blown glass, still the island’s primary economic activity.
