«Quando qualcuno mi chiede di mio padre, Vincenzo, lo fa sempre in merito alla sua abilità unica di sarto. È comprensibile, certo, essendo riconosciuto da tutti per aver scritto con la prima, ormai celebre, giacca destrutturata di sempre, un capitolo molto importante della storia della sartoria partenopea e internazionale. Eppure, visto il racconto che proponiamo nelle prossime pagine, mi piace ricordarlo per un altro aspetto, affine eppur tutto sommato diverso: la sua spiccata sensibilità estetica. Amava molto la bellezza, ha sempre avuto una predilezione assoluta per linee e forme armoniche. Ne era sempre alla ricerca per metterla ovviamente nelle sue giacche ma anche, semplicemente, per nutrire costantemente la sua insaziabile passione per l’arte. Soprattutto per la scuola pittorica partenopea dell’Ottocento. Ecco, questa sua propensione al bello e al fatto a regola d’arte è, al di là dello straordinario patrimonio di insegnamenti tecnici, ciò che maggiormente ha segnato la mia formazione di sarto e ciò che ho voluto trasmettere ai miei figli, oggi alla guida di Cesare Attolini».

«Whenever I’m asked about my father, Vincenzo, it’s always in relation to his unique tailoring skills. It’s understandable, of course – he is universally acknowledged as having written, with the first ever, now famous, deconstructed jacket, a very important chapter in the history of Neapolitan and international tailoring. But in view of the story relayed over the next few pages, I personally like to remember him for another, somewhat different reason: his remarkable aesthetic sensibility. He truly loved beauty, demonstrating a clear predilection for harmonious lines and forms. This was something he pursued constantly – in order to incorporate it, of course, into his jackets, but also, quite simply, to nourish his insatiable passion for art. Above all for the 19th Century Neapolitan school of art. Il suo sguardo vispo e attento a tutto ciò che lo circonda, rivela in pochi attimi un uomo animato da una vivacissima curiosità. Il suo eloquio misurato ma, allo stesso tempo, carico di passione, racconta di un uomo guidato dalle emozioni e contemporaneamente da un significativo rigore. Incontriamo Horacio Pagani nell’avveniristica fabbrica-museo di San Cesario su Panaro, progettata insieme al suo team di designer, per ripercorrere con la memoria la strada che lo ha condotto a creare la più esclusiva sartoria di supercar al Mondo.

In just a few moments, his observant glance takes in everything that surrounds him, revealing a man animated by a vibrant curiosity. His carefully chosen words, few in number but loaded with passion, are those of a man driven by his emotions but also, at the same time, by a strong sense of dignity. We meet Horacio Pagani in the futuristic factory-museum of San Cesario su Panaro, created with his own team of designers, to take him back down memory lane and find out how he managed to create the most exclusive tailor’s shop for supercars in the world.

Come nasce Pagani, quali sono le passioni, le intuizioni e la visione che l’hanno condotta a dare vita a quest’azienda, a questo brand che oggi, senza dubbio, è sinonimo di straordinarie supercar, tra le più ammirate e desiderate al Mondo?

Posso dire anzitutto di esser stato fortunato. Fortunato perché, sin da ragazzino, ho sempre nutrito una passione per l’arte, per le materie scientifiche e per la meccanica contemporaneamente. Un eclettismo che mi ha fatto avvicinare al mondo dell’automobile sin da bambino, perché trovavo che tutte queste discipline potevano essere applicate contemporaneamente. Abitavo in un paese molto piccolo della Pampa Argentina, Casilda, in provincia di Santa Fe, un paese dove si respirava fortemente la cultura italiana, essendo composto al settanta percento da famiglie d’origine italiana. Anche mio nonno giunse qui dall’Italia, dal comasco, alla fine dell’Ottocento e aprì un forno, che dopo centotrenta anni è ancora lì. Ogni tanto arrivava dall’Italia qualche rivista ed è stato leggendone alcune che ho appreso la presenza in Italia di una città, Modena, dove incidentalmente c’era una concentrazione altissima di aziende, come Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, che producevano le automobili più belle al Mondo. È stato così che è nata questa grande passione per le supercar e che ho iniziato a realizzare, tra i 10 e i 12 anni, i primi disegni e modellini in legno balsa o altri materiali di fortuna. Era un gioco, ovviamente, ma per me iniziò ben presto ad essere qualcosa di più, un impegno che prendevo molto seriamente.

How did Pagani begin? Can you describe the passions, intuitions and vision that led you to breathe life into this company and this brand which is undoubtedly a household name today when it comes to supercars, in fact one of the most admired and coveted in the world?

First of all, let me say that I have been very lucky. Lucky because, since I was a boy, I have always kindled a passion for art, one for scientific subjects and another one for mechanics, all at the same time. This is an eclecticism that has brought me closer to the automotive world since my childhood, because I realised that all these passions could be used at once. I lived in a very small village in the Pampas in Argentina, Casilda, in the province of Santa Fe. A village strongly influenced by Italian culture, because 70% of the population were families with Italian origins. My grandfather was one of those who came here from Italy, from the Como area, at the end of the 1800s, and he opened a bakery, which is still there today, one hundred and thirty years on. Every so often, a magazine would arrive from Italy and it was when I read these that I learned about an Italian city, Modena, that happened to be home to many companies, such as Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, renowned for producing the most beautiful cars in the world. This was how my great passion for supercars was sparked, and it encouraged me, between the ages of 10 and 12 years old, to create my very first designs, and make them into models of balsa wood or whatever other materials I was able to lay my hands on. Of course, it was all just a game back then, but for me it soon turned into something more, a commitment that I took very seriously.

Nel corso degli anni poi è nata la passione per Leonardo Da Vinci. In cosa ha segnato il suo percorso?

Lo studio di Leonardo, credo, sia stato un elemento cruciale nella mia vita personale e professionale. Perché si deve a Leonardo l’idea per la quale arte e scienza possono camminare mano nella mano. In questo messaggio trovai un’ispirazione fortissima che mi ha guidato lungo gli anni. Ho capito che non era necessario dover scegliere tra la passione per l’arte e quella per la scienza ma che potevo coniugarle e studiarle entrambe, arrivando addirittura ad interessarmi ad altre discipline come la filosofia. Oltre a studiare, ebbi poi la fortuna da ragazzo di poter iniziare a lavorare in un’officina dove potevo applicare la mia passione per la meccanica a qualsiasi tipo di vettura. Fu così che riuscì a mettere da parte qualche soldino per costruire la mia prima macchina, una macchina da corsa. Fu il mio primo vero banco di prova e fu soprattutto l’opportunità di conoscere alcune persone, tra cui il grande Fangio, che mi aiutarono ad arrivare a Modena.

Then, as the years passed, you developed a passion for Leonardo Da Vinci. How did that influence what you were doing?

I believe that studying Leonardo marked a crucial turning point both in my personal life and for my career. Simply because the idea that art and science can go hand-in-hand was his. In this message, I discovered an extremely powerful source of inspiration that has always guided me throughout the years. I realised that I didn’t have to choose between my passion for art and my passion for science, but that instead I could combine them, study them both, and even take an interest in other subjects too, such as philosophy. When I was still very young, as well as studying, I was also lucky enough to find a job in a workshop, where I could apply my passion for mechanics to any type of vehicle. This was how I managed to save some money, which I would then use to build my very first car, a racing car. It was my first test bench ever and, more than anything else, it gave me the chance to meet a number of people, including the great Fangio, who helped me get to Modena.

Si racconta che lei, già all’età di 13 anni, avesse detto a sua mamma che un giorno sarebbe arrivato qui a Modena a costruire supercar. È vero?

Si è verissimo. Questa terra, nonostante abitassi a migliaia di chilometri di distanza, ha sempre esercitato un fortissimo magnetismo su di me.

I miti di Enzo Ferrari, di Ferruccio Lamborghini, della famiglia Maserati e di Sergio Scaglietti erano davvero una luce che illuminava la mia immaginazione. È solo grazie a loro se oggi la Motor Valley è un’eccellenza assoluta conosciuta, ammirata e osannata in tutto il Mondo. Riuscì così ad arrivare qui, a Modena, il 15 Giugno di 35 anni fa, con due valigie e alcune lettere di presentazione che mi aveva dato proprio Fangio, un grande uomo prima ancora che un grandissimo uomo. Dopo quindici giorni mi ha raggiunto mia moglie ed è iniziata l’avventura: ho lavorato in un vivaio di piante, poi come saldatore di acciaio nei cantieri edili, finché a settembre del 1983 ho avuto l’opportunità di lavorare come operaio in Lamborghini. Qui sono partito da zero, riuscendo nel corso degli anni a conquistarmi un ruolo sempre più rilevante nell’ambito di alcuni importanti progetti: mi sono occupato di carrozzeria, poi ho iniziato a lavorare nel reparto dei materiali compositi, successivamente mi sono occupato della realizzazione del primo telaio per una supercar in fibra di carbonio, oltre a lavorare sul progetto della Diablo, della P140 e del primo suv Lamborghini. Sono stati nove anni molto belli di collaborazione, di grande arricchimento.

The story goes that, when you were only 13 years old, you told your mother that one day you would have come here to Modena to build supercars. Is this true?

Yes, it’s absolutely true. Although I lived thousands of kilometres away from here, this land has always drawn me inextricably towards it. The legends of Enzo Ferrari, Ferruccio Lamborghini, the Maserati family and Sergio Scaglietti were truly the candles that would light up my imagination. It is only thanks to them that today the Motor Valley is seen as the ultimate in excellence, renowned, admired and praised all over the world. And so I managed to come here, to Modena, arriving on 15 June exactly 35 years ago, with 2 suitcases and a presentation letter given to me by none other than Fangio, a great man even before he was a Master. After fifteen days, my wife joined me in Italy and the adventure really took off: I worked in a plant nursery, then as a steel welder on building sites until in September 1983 I was lucky enough to land a job as an unskilled worker in the Lamborghini plant. There I started from scratch, succeeding over the years in working my way up and participating in some important projects: first I worked in the bodywork department, then I passed to the composite materials area, before later creating the first supercar chassis in carbon fibre, as well as working on the designs for the Diablo, the P140 and the first Lamborghini SUV. I spent nine years there: nine wonderful, rewarding years of my life in an environment that taught me so much.

La sua idea, quasi un’ossessione, però, era fare un’auto tutta sua?

Si proprio così! Infatti, terminata la mia esperienza in Lamborghini è nato il progetto della Zonda. Senza nessun tipo di finanziamento e in un periodo, dopo la Prima Guerra del Golfo, di grande crisi economica. Ma io ero convinto, pur basandomi semplicemente su ragioni soggettive, sul mio istinto, che quel progetto doveva prender vita. Volevo portare avanti i miei sogni!

But your idea, almost an obsession, was to build your very own car?

Yes, that’s right! In fact, when I left Lamborghini, I started working on the Zonda design. I had no funding of any kind, and this was in a period of terrible economic crisis, after the First Gulf War. But, even though I was only putting my faith in subjective reasons, I believed in my instinct. I believed that the project would come to life. I was intent on carrying my dreams forward!

Nel lavorare al progetto della prima Zonda, quali furono gli elementi di unicità, di distintività, su cui puntò?

Io ho sempre creduto che il designer, o un creativo in generale, non deve lavorare per sé ma per il proprio cliente, per soddisfare le sue necessità funzionali o emotive. Tuttavia, la prima Zonda nasceva dall’immaginario delle macchine da corsa, soprattutto dei modelli che prendevano parte alla celebre 24 ore di Le Mans, di cui ero un grande appassionato.

Il telaio doveva assolutamente essere tutto in fibra di carbonio, tecnologia ai tempi assolutamente poco diffusa. La sua unicità, inoltre, doveva risiedere in un design esclusivo, completamente originale.

Volevo che non assomigliasse per niente alle altre supercar già presenti sul mercato. Volevo che generasse emozioni completamente nuove.

Sappiamo bene che l’acquisto di un’automobile come queste è mosso soprattutto da motivazioni irrazionali, emotive. Qualsiasi oggetto che componeva la macchina doveva essere un oggetto di design, la tensione al bello è infatti totale. Diamo, ovviamente, per scontato che l’eccellenza assoluta era ciò a cui puntavamo, in ogni ambito, in ogni componente, in ogni dettaglio anche quelli che non si vedono. When working on the design of the first Zonda, what were the unique, distinctive elements you focused on?

I have always believed that the designer, or any creative person in general, shouldn’t work for themselves but for their customer and aim to meet the customer’s functional or emotional needs. However, the first Zonda was inspired by my images of racing cars, especially the ones that took part in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans, of which I was a great fan. The chassis simply had to be completely made of carbon fibre, a technology that hardly anyone used back then. Moreover, the uniqueness of the car would lie in its exclusive, completely original design. I wanted it to look nothing like the other supercars on the market. I wanted it to generate brand new emotions. We know all too well that anyone who buys a car like this one is driven, above all, by irrational, emotional motivations. So any kind of object used in the car had to be an object of design. Indeed, it had to be stunning all over, inside and out. Of course, it goes without saying that absolute excellence was our goal in every environment, part and detail, even those that are not visible. We have always dedicated a great deal of hard work to the scientific research needed to achieve and maintain

Possiamo dire che, come per una giacca o un abito Cesare Attolini, ogni Pagani è fatta su misura per aderire alle richieste o alle necessità di ciascun singolo cliente?

Qui c’è una propensione al cliente assoluta, totale. La nostra missione è quella di far felice il cliente, che è il nostro vero datore di lavoro. Ognuna delle nostre macchine è unica e nasce da un progetto personalizzato, nato dall’ascolto dei clienti. Le macchine sono tutte una diversa dall’altra. Ogni Pagani nasce da un vero e proprio lavoro psicologico, teso a comprendere quali sono i meccanismi che, in ciascun cliente, generano emozioni.

So would we be correct in saying that, like a Cesare Attolini jacket or suit, every Pagani is tailor-made to meet the requests and needs of each individual customer?

Here, the attention we pay to pleasing the customer is everything.

Our mission is to make our customers happy, as they are our real employers. Each of our cars is unique: it is built according to a personalised design which is defined by listening to our customers. All of our cars are different from one another. Each Pagani is the result of a true psychological study, geared to understanding the mechanisms that make each customer tick.

Quali sono i progetti futuri a cui sta lavorando?

Stiamo lavorando ad una nuova Roadster, ancora più sportiva che uscirà il prossimo anno. Mentre nel 2021 presenteremo un nuovo coupé, che poi nel 2023 uscirà in una nuova versione tutta elettrica.

Siamo un gruppo di designer che è molto concentrato in questo momento sull’automobile ma, come è stato per la realizzazione della nostra fabbrica e dei nostri show room, non è escluso che in futuro si possa lavorare in nuovi ambiti.

Can you tell us about the future projects you are working on?

We are working on a new Roadster, which will be even sportier than before and should come out next year. Whereas in 2021, we will present a new coupé, which will then be introduced in 2023 in a new fully electric version. At the moment our team of designers is very focused on the automotive product, but it was just as focused when we designed our production facility and showrooms too, so in future we may well consider working in new fields.

Questa è la storia di un colpo di fulmine, o meglio, di una serie di inesorabili colpi di fulmine tramutatisi in grandi, appassionati, amori!

Tutto ebbe inizio durante una mia visita alla città di Bologna.

Fu amore a prima vista!

Ovunque, gemme di rara bellezza: antichi palazzi con corti sontuose, chiese colme d’opere d’arte, sinuose torri e singolari campanili, eleganti portici.

Tutto raccontava di una città straordinaria, antica e contemporanea allo stesso tempo, fuori dalle solite rotte turistiche del Bel Paese ma da scoprire e vivere, gustare, passo dopo passo.

Everything began during a visit to the city of Bologna.

It was love at first sight!

Giunsi nel capoluogo Emiliano per partecipare ad un simposio.

La mia attenzione, neanche a dirlo, era completamente rivolta agli impegni professionali che mi attendevano, eppure bastò varcare la soglia del Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio per comprendere l’unicità e la pregnanza di questa città.

Bologna, la dotta!

Sede della prima Università d’Occidente, fondata nel lontano 1088.

Il celebre Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio, dove tutto trasuda erudizione, dove per secoli, dai tempi di Dante, Petrarca e Boccaccio, sono state formate molte delle più brillanti menti del sapere occidentale.

Dove ha sede, probabilmente, il teatro anatomico più affascinante del Mondo, progettato da Antonio Levanti e costruito nel 1637.

Una fortuna straordinaria, poter trascorrere proprio qui i giorni di meeting.

Un’occasione irripetibile, per respirare a pieno l’affascinante atmosfera di quella che dal 1563 al 1803 fu la sede unitaria dello Studium bolognese.

I had arrived in Bologna, capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, to take part in a symposium.

I hardly need say that my attention was completely devoted to the professional commitments that awaited me, yet you only need to step across the threshold of the Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio to understand the unique character and significance of this city.

Bologna, the scholar!

Seat of the first University in the West, founded back in 1088.

The famous Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio, where learning oozes from every pore, where for centuries, since the times of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio, many of the most brilliant minds in Western knowledge have been formed.

The site of what is probably the most fascinating anatomical theatre in the world, designed by Antonio Levanti and built in 1637.

It was a remarkable stroke of luck to be able to spend the meeting days in this very place.

A unique opportunity to breathe in the fascinating atmosphere of what was the unified seat of the University of Bologna from 1563 to 1803.

3,796 km: il portico più lungo al mondo!

Quando sul finire di una delle giornate di lavoro, mi condussero alla scoperta di questo straordinario percorso porticato che da Bologna parte per inerpicarsi delicatamente sul Colle della Guardia, uno dei tanti lussureggianti e eleganti colli che circondano la città, rimasi davvero stupito.

Costruito tra il 1674 e il 1721 per proteggere il cammino dei pellegrini che andavano verso il Santuario della Madonna di San Luca, è da allora una grande finestra che, ad ogni arco, regala una nuova, stupefacente, prospettiva panoramica.

Affascinato, a dir poco, decisi di farvi ritorno una seconda volta ma, come da tradizione, lo feci rigorosamente a piedi.

Accompagnato dai morbidi, flebili, giochi di luce dei raggi del sole al tramonto.

When, at the end of the working day, they took me by car to explore this extraordinary porticoed arcade that starts in Bologna and climbs gently up to the Colle della Guardia, one of the many luxuriant and elegant hills that surround the city, I was truly stunned.

The arcade was built between 1674 and 1721 to shelter the pilgrims as they walked up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, and since then it has been a panoramic window offering a new, stunning panoramic view with each arch.

Fascinated, to say the least, I decided to return a second time, but this time I went the traditional way on foot, accompanied by the soft, gentle play of light created by the rays of the setting sun.

Sapevo di essere a pochi minuti dalla mitica Motor Valley.

Il mio cuore di grande appassionato e collezionista di super car batteva forte.

Avevo letto la storia affascinante di Horacio Pagani.

La storia di un bambino, nato nel paesino di Casilda, in provincia di Santa Fe, in Argentina, da una famiglia di origini italiane, che aveva il sogno di arrivare proprio qui, tra Modena e Bologna, per costruire la macchina più bella del Mondo.

Neanche a dirlo, conoscevo tutto delle sue mitiche automobili, la Zonda e la Huayra, progettate e realizzate una a una come fossero abiti su misura, perfettamente cuciti per dare forma alle emozioni di ciascuno dei propri clienti.

E allora, proprio non potevo lasciarmi sfuggire l’occasione, a portata di soli 39 chilometri di distanza dal mio hotel, di andare a visitare il museo Pagani, situato all’interno dell’azienda, a San Cesario sul Panaro, piccolo borgo alle porte di Modena.

Fu una visita indimenticabile, che lasciò una nota indelebile sul taccuino dei miei sogni nel cassetto!

I knew that I was only a few minutes away from the legendary Motor Valley.

As a keen super car enthusiast and collector, my heart began beating fast.

I had read the fascinating story of Horacio Pagani.

The story of a child, born in the village of Casilda, in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina, into a family of Italian origin, whose dream was to come to this very spot, between Modena and Bologna, to build the most beautiful car in the world.

Needless to say, I knew all about its legendary cars, the Zonda and the Huayra, designed and crafted one by one like tailor-made suits, perfectly stitched to give shape to the emotions of each of their clients.

So of course I couldn’t miss the chance, to go and visit the Pagani museum, within just 39 kilometres of my hotel, inside the company premises at San Cesario sul Panaro, a small town close to Modena.

It was an unforgettable visit, that left an indelible mark in the notebook of my secret dreams!

Un sogno che, tuttavia, come iniziai a fantasticare sin da subito, non sarebbe rimasto a lungo in quel cassetto!

L’immaginazione correva veloce, sulla scia delle emozioni vissute durante la visita al museo Pagani.

L’idea di una super car, una straordinaria Huayra in fibra di carbonio, pensata con me in ciascun minimo dettaglio e realizzata su misura per me, continuava a distrarmi dai doveri quotidiani.

Era diventata un’ossessione!

Dopo qualche settimana di fervido fantasticare, ruppi gli indugi e decisi che un’altra visita a San Cesario sul Panaro si rendeva necessaria per dare finalmente corpo ai miei desideri.

All’arrivo, fui condotto all’interno del cuore produttivo dell’azienda per comprendere pienamente il DNA unico di una Pagani e come, fase dopo fase, vede la luce ciascuna automobile, grazie al meticoloso lavoro di progettazione di ogni singolo componente e alla paziente operosità manuale di quelli che possono esser definiti, a tutti gli effetti, dei veri e propri artigiani di queste rombanti meraviglie di tecnologia ed estetica.

Fonte d’ispirazione assoluta fu una stupenda Zonda HP Barchetta, progettata per sé da Horacio Pagani in persona.

Il giorno dopo ero già nuovamente in azienda, il sogno iniziava a prender forma.

Decisi che avrebbe avuto le sembianze di una Huayra Roadster e iniziai quel percorso, a dir poco affascinante, di personalizzazione della mia opera d’arte, che avrei voluto non finisse mai!

But, as I began fantasising right away, it was a not dream that was to remain secret very long, My imagination moved fast in the wake of the emotions I had felt during the visit to the Pagani museum.

The idea of a super car, an extraordinary Huayra in carbon fibre, designed with me in all the smallest details and made to measure for me, continually distracted me from my daily duties.

It had become an obsession!

After a few weeks of fervid fantasy, I stopped beating about the bush and decided that I had to make another visit to San Cesario sul Panaro so that my desires could finally take shape.

On my arrival I was taken into the productive core of the company In order to fully understand the unique DNA of a Pagani: how each car is created, phase by phase, through the meticulous process of designing each individual component and the patient manual labour of those who can be defined to all intents and purposes, genuine craftsmen of these throbbing marvels of technology and aesthetics.

The absolute source of inspiration was a stupendous Zonda HP Barchetta, designed for himself by Horacio Pagani in person.

The next day I was back at the company again: the dream had begun to take shape.

I decided that it would look like a Huayra Roadster and I set off along the path, a fascinating one to say the least, of customizing my own work of art: a process I never wanted to end!

Da quel giorno, seguirono molte visite, per seguire la gestazione della mia Huayra Roadster!

Amavo seguire le diverse fasi di produzione, amavo condividere le mie impressioni con i progettisti, osservare gli artigiani al lavoro.

Volevo conoscere tutto della mia supercar, della sua corazza in fibra di carbonio e del suo cuore scalpitante.

Volevo valutare con loro ogni dettaglio meccanico, tecnologico o estetico che fosse.

Un’esperienza unica e un privilegio assoluto, un piacere a cui non riuscivo a rinunciare, ritagliandomi appena possibile qualche giorno di libertà dagli incessanti impegni professionali.

After that day, there were many more visits to oversee the gestation of my Huayra Roadster!

Un percorso creativo straordinario.

L’entusiasmo correva lungo il filo di materiali esclusivi, texture, linee, colori, tecniche di lavorazione uniche.

I loved following the different phases of production, I loved sharing my impressions with the designers and observing the craftsmen at work.

I wanted to know everything about my supercar, about its carbon fibre shell, its heart raring to go.

I wanted to evaluate every detail, be it mechanical, technological or aesthetic.

A unique experience and an absolute privilege, a pleasure that I just couldn’t do without.

So I set aside a few days of liberty from my constant professional commitments as soon as possible.

It was an extraordinary creative path.

Enthusiasm coursed along the line of exclusive materials, textures, lines, colours and unique work techniques.

La mia curiosità correva veloce però anche al di fuori delle mura di Pagani!

Avevo letto più volte delle tantissime eccellenze agroalimentari di questa terra, non a caso denominata Food Valley, la cui capitale indiscussa è Parma.

Una terra ricca di sapori si ma, soprattutto, di straordinari saperi legati alla laboriosa cultura contadina di questa fertile pianura bagnata dal fiume Po. Terra di celebri, uniche eccellenze, conosciute e apprezzate in tutto il Mondo, tra cui il Parmigiano Reggiano, il Prosciutto di Parma, Il Culatello di Zibello, la pasta fresca all’uovo, le conserve di pomodoro e l’aceto di Modena.

Amavo passeggiare tra le fertili campagne, girare in bicicletta tra i piccoli borghi, scoprire l’autentica e genuina cultura popolare di questa regione, legata a doppio filo alla forza vitale del maestoso fiume, il Po appunto, che la attraversava.

But my curiosity moved quickly beyond the Pagani factory walls, too!

I had often read about the wealth of excellent food and agriculture products in this territory: it’s no coincidence that it’s called Food Valley, with Parma as its undisputed capital.

A land rich in flavours, yes, but above all in remarkable expertise linked to the hard-working peasant-farmer culture on this fertile plain, watered by the river Po. A land of famous, unique excellences known and appreciated throughout the world, including Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Parma ham, Zibello ‘culatello’ (cured ham), fresh egg pasta, tomato sauces and Modena balsamic vinegar.

I loved walking through the fertile countryside, and cycling around its small towns, discovering the authentic, genuine popular culture of this region, bound tightly to the vital force of the majestic river, the Po, that flows through it.

Avevo stabilito la mia dimora a pochi chilometri da Parma, a Polesine Parmense precisamente, a due passi da Zibello, Paese del celeberrimo Culatello È qui che apre le sue porte la meravigliosa Antica Corte Pallavicina.

Edificata nel 1249 per volere del Marchese Umberto Pallavicino e oggi, da quasi trent’anni, regno di Massimo Spigaroli, produttore dei culatelli più apprezzati e richiesti al Mondo oltre che sublime Chef. È a lui che si deve il restauro completo di questo luogo meraviglioso, che oggi pare come sospeso per magia nel tempo.

Come tirato fuori da una sequenza di Novecento, grande capolavoro del cinema di Bernardo Bertolucci.

Dopo aver lavorato come mezzadro nel podere Piantador del Maestro Giuseppe Verdi, fu il bisnonno di Massimo a giungere qui alla Corte Pallavicina come affittuario.

Allevava maiali, polli, tacchini, oche, anatre e bachi da seta.

Mungeva le mucche, piantava i pioppi, faceva fascine e coltivava i cocomeri, il grano, la melica, gli ortaggi. D’inverno, poi, faceva i salumi seguendo le antiche usanze.

Per vicende alterne, la Corte andò in abbandono e fu proprio Massimo Spigaroli a riacquistarla nel 1990, nella condizione di poco più di un rudere, con l’obiettivo di riportarla allo splendore di un tempo, restaurandola con il coinvolgimento di artigiani ancora padroni degli antichi saperi del posto, usando i mattoni della stessa epoca, il legno di pioppo e di rovere degli stessi terreni. È qui che potei conoscere davvero e godere a pieno della cultura enogastronomica locale, dal famoso culatello di Massimo al Parmigiano, affinati nelle cantine della Corte Pallavicina.

Per non parlare dei vini, come il Lambrusco o il Tamburen che potrebbero esser definiti “poveri” in confronto ai grandi toscani o piemontesi ma che affondano le loro radici nella secolare cultura contadina della bassa parmense.

I was staying not far from Parma, in Polesine Parmense to be precise, just a short distance from Zibello, the village that is home to the world-famous Culatello.

It is here that the marvellous Antica Corte Pallavicina opens its doors.

Built in 1249 for the Marquis Umberto Pallavicino it is now, and has been for almost thirty years, the kingdom of Massimo Spigaroli, producer of the most admired and popular culatello in the world, as well as a sublime chef.

He is the one responsible for the complete restoration of this wonderful building, which now seems to be suspended in time as though by magic, as though taken straight from a film sequence from 1900, the great film by Bernardo Bertolucci.

It was Massimo’s great-grandfather who, having worked as a share-cropper on the Piantador farm owned by Maestro Giuseppe Verdi, came here to the Corte Pallavicina as a tenant farmer.

He reared pigs, chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks and silkworms.

He milked the cows, planted poplar trees, made up faggots of wood and cultivated watermelon, wheat, maize and vegetables.

But in winter he cured meats, following the ancient traditions.

With the vicissitudes of life, the Corte fell into a state of neglect and it was Massimo Spigaroli himself who re-purchased it in 1990, when it was little more than a ruin, with the aim of bringing it back to its former splendour, restoring it with the involvement of craftsmen who were still masters of the ancient skills of the area, using bricks from the same epoch, and poplar wood and oak from the same territory.

It was here that I could really get to know and enjoy the local food and wine culture, from Massimo’s famous culatello to the Parmigiano cheese, refined in the cellars of the Corte Pallavicina.

And then there are the wines, such as Lambrusco or Tamburen, which might be considered “humble” compared to the great Tuscan or Piedmont wines but whose roots go deep down into the age-old peasant-farmer culture of the Parma lowlands.

E arrivò il giorno!

Arrivò il giorno in cui mi sarebbe stata consegnata la mia tanto agognata Huayra Roadster.

L’avevo immaginata a lungo.

L’avevo vista nascere giorno dopo giorno.

E ora era dinanzi ai miei occhi!

Non vedevo l’ora di salirci a bordo, girare la chiave e sentire la sinfonia del suo motore.

E poi andare e andare.

Impetuosa e raffinata allo stesso tempo.

Blu di un blu che emanava eleganza senza tempo.

Ogni dettaglio era stato perfettamente realizzato e ogni centimetro era espressione della passione con cui ogni designer, ingegnere, meccanico, artigiano ci aveva lavorato.

Come da rito, mi furono consegnate le chiavi in un’elegante cassettina forgiata a mano in legno.

Era arrivato il momento di brindare e poi partire verso l’unica meta che davvero mi interessava raggiungere in quel momento: il puro piacere, la pura emozione di guidare il mio nuovo gioiello.

The day had arrived!

The day had arrived when I was to receive delivery of my longed-for Huayra Roadster.

I had imagined it for ages.

I had seen it come to life day by day.

And now it was there in front of my eyes!

I couldn’t wait to climb into it, to turn the key and hear the symphony of its engine. and then to drive and drive.

Fu un’emozione unica, un’esperienza impagabile, che tutt’oggi, dopo un anno, continuo a vivere ancora ogni volta che giro quella chiave.

Impetuous and refined at the same time.

Blue with a blue that emanated a timeless elegance.

Every detail was perfectly made and every centimetre was an expression of the passion with which each designer, engineer, mechanic and artisan had worked on it.

Like a ritual, I was handed the keys in an elegant hand-made wooden box.

It was time for a toast and then to head off to the only destination that I was really interested in reaching at that moment: pure pleasure, the pure emotion of driving my new jewel.

It was a unique emotion, a priceless experience, that even today, a year later, I still feel again every time I turn that key.
