Higher level executives who mentor new employees has been a sound business practice since commerce began centuries ago. Today, mentoring looks a bit different. With new concepts and technology springing up at a rapid pace, younger professionals, who are often very tech-savvy, are now mentoring the more seasoned employees and executives who may be behind with these skills. Some companies call this “May-November” mentoring, but the more popular term is reverse mentoring. The concept of reverse mentoring is attributed to former General Electric CEO Jack Welch. In the 1990’s, he had 500 higher-level executives work with younger employees to learn how they worked, which included a new online world called the internet. Mr. Welch was even part of the program and learned how to use the web. Today, all types of companies are utilizing this unique approach to connecting upper level management with younger employees. Many companies, from IBM to Time Warner, have developed formal reverse mentoring programs which have helped boost profits from expanded discussions and input. Developing a formal program can be an effective way to build reverse mentoring relationships within a company. Before moving forward with a formal program, there are several key issues to address. An article that appeared in Forbes noted five focus areas to be addressed from expectations to trust. Realistic expectations of the mentoring relationship need to be clearly defined. Both parties have to be completely committed to the relationship and should agree upon rules upfront. The best mentoring programs focus on a willingness to learn from both parties, and reverse mentoring is no different. Trust is a key factor in reverse mentoring programs where both parties are being asked to go outside of their comfort zone. Finally, both parties must be transparent and willing to share what they are feeling and thinking. This helps in overcoming differences in generational communication styles. Not all companies need a formal reverse mentoring program. An easy way to help engage informal reverse mentoring is to just have all employees get together to discuss projects or programs. Younger employees may have a different perspective that could open the eyes of the company leaders to combat existing problems or even develop a new product. There are other benefits to reverse mentoring besides the obvious learning taking place. The senior manager can share their business knowledge with the younger mentor. An example might be in dealing with customers, where a phone call or an in person meeting might be better than a text or email to close an important sale. Another benefit is that the younger More on Page 3

Reverse Mentoring Con’t from page 1 mentors are likely to receive a morale boost, leading to improved employee retention at the company. The mentoring relationship fosters professional development for both the mentee and mentor making this a popular program for many companies. In fact, younger employees at Hewlett-Packard are seeking more reverse mentoring opportunities. At tech giant Cisco Systems, having a reverse mentor became a “badge of honor” for executives. There can be drawbacks with reverse mentoring as well. It might be difficult for experienced employees or executives to take advice or feedback from those with less experience. Younger team members may lack the confidence to share their true opinions or they may find it intimidating to work with an executive, leading to less feedback or even participation. In the end, reverse mentoring can break through the traditional assumptions that both younger and older employees have of each other. Reverse mentoring removes the stereotypes that most employees have and can lead to improved communication between employees. Whether your company chooses to develop a formal program or keep it simple, reverse mentoring can be a great way to improve your results.

Reverse Mentoring What it can do for your business Valuable advice and information from new sources - Younger employees can link experienced employees or executives to new trends, thoughts, or even business opportunities Catch up on technology more quickly - Younger employees are typically more tech-savvy and are willing to teach those who may be behind, leading to peer-topeer training and real-world learning that has context to how technology can be useful

Last minute is not a problem We had an unexpected event Trinity Worldwide Reprographics 12921 E. 166th St. at Irvine University recently, Cerritos, CA 90703 and I needed copies of our marketing materials printed ASAP! I would recommend Trinity Worldwide Reprographics to family and friends, schools, churches, and clubs for fast, professional and friendly service. I will definitely call them again for my printing needs. Ronald Johnson Irvine University

Generation of new ideas - Reverse mentoring can spark new ideas through cross-generational understanding and communication Boost morale and energy - Engagement between the reverse mentor and mentee brings a renewed sense of connection between employees through improved communication and shared dialogue

Sherman Crancer from Microsoft presented 5 Steps to Security

The Chamber partnered with the City of Cerritos to hold the Cyber Security Business Conference on April 16, 2015, in the Sierra Room at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. Attendees learned the best way to protect their businesses from the growing threat of cyber attacks. Presenters covered several issues related to cyber security. The event opened with a panel of experts discussing what to do when your business is attacked. The panel, made up of Steve Vicencia, Vicencia & Buckley Insurance Services - a division of HUB International, Special Agent John Palmieri, FBI, and Gordon Calhoun, from the law firm of Louis, Brisbols, Bisgaard & Smith, presented information on reporting a cyber attack to law enforcement and the insurance coverage needed to best protect your business. During the luncheon portion of the meeting, Jim Vaughn and Jonathan Karchmer, both from iDiscovery Solutions, gave attendees insight into real world cases of cyber crime and how, as forensic examiners, they work to take corrective action and track down criminals. Attendees left the event with knowledge that they could put to use that very day to protect their businesses, employees, and customers from cyber crime. American Red Cross

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Saturday, with an epicenter 50 miles northwest of the capital, Kathmandu. The quake, the largest to hit the country since 1934, has impacted approximately 8 million people, killed more than 5,500 people with 11,000 more injured to date. Many are feared trapped under rubble and the number of casualties is expected to rise. At least 15 aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 5 to 6.6 (for comparison, the 1994 Northridge quake was a magnitude of 6.7), caused further damage to buildings and increased the risk of collapse. The American Red Cross is working with the Nepal Red Cross and its global Red Cross partners on a coordinated and comprehensive international response. To date, we have committed $1 million to support the global Red Cross network to meet the emergency needs of earthquake-affected populations in Nepal. Right now, Red Cross activities are focused on emergency health, shelter, and livelihoods, as well as reconnecting families, providing safe and dignified burials, and supporting Nepal Red Cross preparedness and response capacity. Disasters are indiscriminate; they happen all over the world, every day. For more than 130 years, we have worked with the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network to meet the needs of the world’s most vulnerable communities in the face of disaster while also working to strengthen community resilience. Red Cross disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts simply would not be possible without our volunteers, staff, and partners – everyone plays a vital part. It truly is in the coming together that we are strongest. To donate, visit the American Red Cross of Greater Long Beach/Rio Hondo’s website at www.redcross.org/ca/long-beach.
