What’s the Deal with Millennials? We’ve all heard the stories about millennials in the workplace, like the one where an employee’s mom called to ask his boss for a raise or those who quit because they simply didn’t like the hours. Now that this group, born from 1982 to 1999, make up the majority of workforce, maybe we need to look a bit closer at who they really are in the workplace. A recent article in the Harvard Business Review notes that millennials aren’t all that different from younger workforces that came before them. The knock on this age group is that they are all narcissists, which may be true but so they are young people who typically possesses this trait. Millennials want to make the same positive impact in their workplace as both Generation X’rs and Baby Boomers. The article notes several studies showing where younger workers were on par with their older counterparts when it comes to pride of where they work to optimism about the company’s future. Millennials do want meaningful work and aren’t as likely to spend extended hours at the office. They would like flexibility, autonomy, and respect. They’d like to go home when the job is done, not wait until the clock strikes five o’clock. This group is motivated by positivity and opportunity, not always money. This could all be due witnessing their parents both spend too many late nights and weekends at the office at a job they really don’t like just to make ends meet. Simply put, they just want more. Other myths about millennials include lacking loyalty to their employer, they don’t follow orders, or they are just plain lazy. If you believe this, the data might just surprise you. The White House 15 Economic Facts About Millennials found that millennials actually stay with their employers longer than Gen X’rs did at the same ages. As for not following what they are told to do, an article in The Economist found that 41 percent of millennials would do what their supervisor told them even if they couldn’t see the reason for it. This is quite a bit better than the 30 percent of Baby Boomers and 30 percent of Gen X. As for millennials being lazy, a recent poll of American employees showed that millennials are the most competitive of all age groups with most saying competition is “what gets them up in the morning.” Millennials are much like the generations that preceded them: misunderstood. Yes, their methods might be different but their goals seem to align with other generations. They want to be valued and, in return, can provide a great deal of value to an employer. With this group now the majority of workforce, it’s safe to say that your business likely has at least one millennial employee with more to come in the years ahead. It’s time to understand this new generation and help them grow into their potential.
