Volume XIV, Issue I

Netiquette By Scott Smith

We live in an age where the majority of daily communications is done digitally. From texting to email, digital communication has surpassed “snail mail” or even phone calls. Still faxing? You might be the only one as now most are scanning documents to store or send them electronically. With all of this digital communication comes a new form of etiquette, or “netiquette.” 

 

Some consider “the net” or digital communication comparable to communicating in a different culture. As with any culture, there are rules and guidelines on how best to communicate. Your company may have already come up with a list of “do’s and don’ts” for communicating via email or on social media. If not, here are few suggested guidelines you might want to consider when communicating in this digital world. Ever received an email written in all caps? How did that make you feel? Many consider this to equate to yelling or shouting. Sure, it may be easy to type with your caps lock on, but it may be considered quite inconsiderate. Then again, maybe you are yelling. Be aware of caps. “To be or not to be? Is that even a question? - Mr. Potato Head” Quotes are misused all of the time so make sure yours are correct, used in the correct context and attributed to the person who said it. Using the entire quote is important when thinking about context. Not everyone needs to see your reply, so be careful when using “reply all.” Be honest in your subject lines. Have you received emails that have a subject line that’s intriguing only to find the content of the email has nothing to do with the subject line and is a complete waste of your time? If so, you are not alone. The lesson here is not to do that to someone else. Make sure your subject line has something to do with the content of your email. Don’t be a thief, even if you did so without malice. There is so much information on the internet and you may find the perfect article or photograph. Just do not use that information without crediting the source and be very careful not to use copyrighted material. If you need to, seek out permission to use the items someone carefully crafted. Remember the Golden Rule! The website networketiquette.net states the Golden Rule for online communications is to Be Nice. Many find it easy to be cruel on the internet where they can remain anonymous. If you have the courage to be critical, have the courage to clearly state who you are. Do not troll, or constantly barrage a particular person online or on social media with unwarranted criticism. If you do not gossip in person, do not gossip online. Ask yourself one question when communicating online: would I do this in person? If not, then do not. Remember, everything you send or write online is kept somewhere so your communication has a life of its own.

Whether you are new to communicating online, or very experienced, think of these rules when you are writing that next email response or commenting on a social media post.

Executive Committee

As I look forward to this new adventure, I am excited about my position as the incoming President of the Cerritos Regional Chamber of Commerce. Having been employed by Norwalk - La Mirada Plumbing & HVAC since 1997, I have had the opportunity and privilege to work with many of the non-profits in the surrounding communities and to represent a business that realizes the importance of giving back to its communities - Cerritos always being one of my favorites. I have been on the Executive Board for the last couple of years and have learned so much. I have had the opportunity to meet many new people who I feel I have established great friendships with as well. Teri Bazen Before I became involved in any of the local communities, I 2016-2017 was not aware of the important roles that a Chamber has as a Chamber President representative of its cities. I often recommend neighboring Chambers for important information for business and personal needs. I also recommend that people call on their own Chambers in their own cities for vital information when needed. I am very proud of the fact that as a body of Chamber Volunteers, we are striving to improve our service for the businesses as well as for the community as a whole. We are always working hard to improve those services, and I am sure that we will continue in the future. I am looking forward to working with this Team of Volunteers to make the Cerritos Regional Chamber of Commerce the best that it can be. I am also looking forward to working with Scott, Jill, and May - they are a great group of people. So please, in the near future, take full advantage of all that this organization has to offer to both businesses as well as residents alike. Please do not hesitate to give us a call if there is anything that we can do to help you grow your business in the future.

2015-2016 at the Cerritos Regional Chamber of Commerce The Cerritos Regional Chamber of Commerce is a member-driven, nonprofit association of business professionals and civic-minded residents whose mission is to promote and enhance business within the Cerritos area. What began as a community Chamber of Commerce in 1963, is now a regional business association with over 300 active members. The Chamber works to benefit Chamber members and the local economy through its events and programs. We had a great 2015-2016 year, with outstanding events, workshops, and advocacy. Here are a few highlights of this year’s accomplishments:

Events

 An estimated attendance of nearly 1,000 people visited the Chamber’s annual Taste of the Region & Business Expo, held at the beautiful Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in September. Guests were able to enjoy food & beverage tasting samples, business exhibits, auto displays and live entertainment.  The Chamber’s monthly luncheons continued to attract a wide audience. Some of our keynote speakers this year included City of Cerritos Mayor George Ray and City Manager Art Gallucci at the State of the City, L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe at the State of the County, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez at the State of the Nation and ABC Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Mary Sieu at the State of the District.  The Chamber proudly presented its annual Fiesta on the Fairways Golf Classic Tournament at the Los Coyotes Country Club Golf Course in May. Golfers, businesses sponsoring holes, and volunteers all enjoyed “networking on the course”.  The ever popular Turkey Bowl, held at AMF Cerritos Lanes in November, provided an opportunity for businesses to enjoy an afternoon of bowling, networking, team building, and staff development.

 Networking events were as popular as ever. From our traditional evening mixers to Mixin’ in the Mornin’ to Let’s Do Lunch to the new 4 to 6’er Networking Mixer, Chamber members had many ways to connect with other members and begin an important business relationship.  This year’s Business Conference focused on Employment Law covering the best ways to hire, document, and terminate employees, as well as managing employees with disabilities, and working with non-citizen employees.

Advocacy

 The Chamber actively advocated on behalf of businesses through the participation in the Gateway Chambers Alliance - a group of Chambers of Commerce and business associations from across the Gateway Region. This group took action against antibusiness legislation and regulation including increasing the minimum wage, increased taxes/fees for businesses, and laws that would add to the burden California businesses already face.

Communications

 This Week at the Chamber weekly email blast gave Chamber Members the opportunity to submit articles to promote their businesses each week.  The Chamber’s Cerritos Business Insider newsletter was emailed to over 1000 contacts each month. Newsletter articles included reports on past and upcoming Chamber events, introduced new Chamber Members, recognized Chamber Members’ Anniversaries, and highlighted businesses and business leaders.  The Chamber’s new website saw over 30,000 page views over the course of the year  The Chamber saw marked increase in social media followers on both Facebook and Twitter The Chamber is continually looking for ways to help promote and enhance the business community. Even if you are not able to attend events, there are many ways for our members to benefit from the Chamber. Remember, just publicizing the fact you belong to the Chamber holds cache with your customers – making them 10% more likely to think your products stack up better than your competition. The Chamber also serves as your link to the business community and works as a referral center, connecting members with other members for goods and services.

Chamber Celebrates the Growth of a Local Business with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony PITA PIT

13293 South St. Cerritos, CA 90703 562-261-5050 A Ribbon Cutting & Grand Opening Ceremony was held at Pita Pit on June 6th. Pita Pit offers a healthier alternative to fast food with a soft roll-able pita bread, lean grilled meats, fresh vegetables, flavorful cheeses and savory sauces. As our guests discovered, the ordering process is both fun & personal – each customer creates and customizes his very own freshly made pita. In fact, there are so many different food options to choose from that there are over a trillion different pita combinations (yes, they did the math). For those not in the mood for a pita, one can order it “fork style” which comes as a salad. Pita Pit started in Canada in 1995 as a healthy alterative to fast food restaurants. Today there are over 240 Pita Pit restaurants in 43 states throughout the U.S. and over 580 Pita Pit locations worldwide. We are so happy that we now have our very own Pita Pit in the city of Cerritos. Pita Pit owner Josh Sitea would like to welcome you to come by and taste for yourself - It’s Fresh Thinking, Healthy Eating.

Vintage Cerritos Mixer Vintage Cerritos hosted the Chamber’s monthly Networking Mixer on June 23rd. Located on a portion of the Cerritos College Campus, Vintage Cerritos features 147 apartments for seniors which includes the following services and amenities: restaurant-style dining, social activities, transportation, community and recreation room, and assisted living personal care plans. The lovely courtyard provided a beautiful setting where Chamber members relaxed, mingled, and enjoyed delicious food and beverage while listening to the sounds of jazz. Chamber members congratulated Sales Director, Kris Schero and Executive Director, Laura Trujillo for being honored with the Chamber’s Business of the Year Award. The Chamber also thanks them for hosting this event and making everyone feel welcome.
