Crowdfunding

A New Way to Fund Your Business Crowdfunding has taken off. Maybe you have heard about the video game company that secured $70 million through crowdfunding. Or perhaps you have seen the smart watch on the market that benefited through over $10 million in crowdfunding. Entertainment has seen a great rise in crowdfunded projects, from movies to music to television shows. The popular public television show Reading Rainbow is back on the air due to crowdfunding. Perhaps you have that million dollar idea and have been working on a business plan, making sure all is ready to start your business. The only thing holding you back is the money to open your doors and make your idea a reality. There are many ways to fund your business, one of which is crowdfunding. Crowdfunding simply means you are raising money for your business through a large number of people. Typically this is done online with many resources and online crowdfunding sites available. There are really two types of crowdfunding: rewards crowdfunding and equity crowdfunding. In rewards crowdfunding, the business raising funding “pre-sells” their products, then uses those funds to produce the product. This allows the business to operate without the need for selling equity to investors. The second type of crowdfunding is equity, where the funder, or investor, is given shares, or partial ownership, in the business in exchange for their investment. A great example of rewards crowdfunding might be a clothing company that makes garments only after they meet certain funding thresholds. There are companies like this now that only charge the funder when they have reached their funding goal and the garment goes into production. The only issue here is if the company takes payment and cannot deliver the product to the funder. In equity crowdfunding, funders are buying shares of the company and will likely expect a return on that investment. As with any group of investors, they may have demands and expectations. If a company is unable to meet those expectations, they will likely have a group of angry investors on their hands. The key here, like with any group of investors, is communication. By providing updates on the company’s progress, funders are kept aware of significant milestones reached or any possible delays. There is no denying the fact that crowdfunding has become an economic force. Fundable, one of many crowdfunding websites, estimated that by the end of 2014, about 270,000 jobs and $65 billion were added to the global economy through crowdfunding. Kickstarter, one of the most recognized crowdfunding websites, raised more than $500 million last year, funding As with any form of raising funds through investors, crowdfunding is no

guarantee you will receive the capital you need to start your business. Crowdfunding sites might reject your idea and just because you make it through to actually become a funded business or project, it certainly does not mean the money will roll in. According to Forbes, only about 40% of Kickstarter projects get funding. Of those funded, most earned $10,000 or less. So, before you reach out to your friends, family members, and online followers to crowdfund your business or project, you might want to make sure it is right for you. As with any type of funding, it has its positives and negatives. You can always begin your funding search through the U.S. Small Business Administration, or SBA. They have a great deal of information on their website at www.sba.gov. One of the great resources they have is a “financing wizard program run through BusinessUSA (business.usa.gov). This program will lead you through a checklist, helping to guide you to the right type of funding source.

I told my Cerritos client to cancel his Amazon order, meet me at the Cerritos Microsoft Store, and he purchased two Surface Pro 3’s that day. Ross Gille DigiCal
