Cloud Computing

How it can impact your business “Hey, you! Get off of my cloud,” is what Mick Jagger sang back in 1965. Today, he might want more people accessing his cloud. You have undoubtedly accessed the cloud many times before you even began reading this newsletter. We are all accessing information on the cloud, saving information to the cloud, and having others access important information through the cloud.

Let’s Do Lunch! at Lucille’s A great group attended the Chamber’s first Let’s Do Lunch Networking Luncheon at Lucille’s Bar-B-Q and Smokehouse.

The phrase “cloud computing” has only been around for about the last decade or so. However, the concept of storing information on a network of computers allowing for the sharing of that information has been around for quite a long time. Many of you might remember sitting in front of a CRT display terminal with a black screen and a green cursor blinking at you. That display was “dumb,” meaning it could not compute on its own, rather it was connected to a larger computer where the information was stored. Cloud computing is similar, but more sophisticated. Cloud computing became more popular with the advent and ability of high speed internet. This allowed computers to communicate quickly, making the transfer of information easy. Cloud computing is less dependent on hardware, not requiring large hard drive space. This makes it quite efficient and affordable. You have certainly seen or accessed cloud driven information if you have used web-based applications. Applications that used to be housed on a compact disk can now be downloaded in a matter of minutes or just accessed via a website. This can actually be a more reliable way for users to access an application as they are housed on redundant servers, not a single computer’s hard drive. Of course, users need a stable and fast internet connection. For many of us, the cloud is where we store information to be retrieved later. Maybe you do not have enough room on your phone to keep all of your photos. You may wish to send them to the cloud and go to the cloud to access them when you want to show them to friends and family. It could be that your company has employees in several off-site locations. You could send files back and forth as attachments on emails, or you could save them to the cloud where the entire team has access to the documents. In essence, you are storing your information remotely. Is there a cost to using the cloud? Yes and no. Many cloud storage providers give users a certain amount of free space, and then charge a monthly or annual fee for additional storage capacity. Still, most ► Continued on page 2

cloud storage is reasonably priced for individuals or businesses. Using the cloud does bring up questions of ownership and privacy. Exactly who owns data stored in the cloud on a server like Dropbox, Google, or Apple? In fact, depending on the provider and their terms of service, you may no longer own the documents you are storing on their servers. You may also lose some privacy, as you are depending on the provider to delete the documents you have stored with them off of their servers. Providers may also have expedited procedures to turn your documents over to the authorities should they think they need your information. There is also the potential that your information could be hacked; think back to the large iCloud hack of celebrity photos from a few years ago. In the end, you need to decide if the benefits of storing your information on the cloud makes sense for you and your company. It makes sharing information easier and more efficient, but as with any technology, there is a down side when thinking about ownership and privacy. There is no doubt the cloud is with us to stay. There is also little doubt we will hear Mick Jagger’s voice on a cloud service provider’s commercial in the near future.
