Keeping Your Business Secure Is your business secure? Cyber Security gets a great deal of attention, but many businesses still struggle with traditional crime ranging from vandalism to theft. Businesses are more than four times more likely to be burglarized as homes, and small businesses are targets in more than half of all commercial burglaries committed. The need to keep your place of business secure is of vital importance to keeping your business viable and successful. As with any type of security, there are steps businesses can take to keep their stores or offices secure. It begins with awareness and a common sense approach. Exterior:  Light all exterior sides of your business with vandal resistant fixtures  Reinforce doors with long screws or bolts on heavy-duty strike plates or pop-out proof hinges  Replace hollow-core doors with solid doors where possible  Issue as few keys as possible and change locks if keys are lost or not returned by former employees  Never “tag” your keys with the name of your business  Keep a log of all keys issued  Secure roof openings like air ducts and skylights  Keep debris, weeds, and shrubbery away from windows and doors  Protect windows and glass doors with transparent window film, security glazing, roll down security panels, or burglar-resistant glass Interior:  Keep a minimum of cash on the premises  Leave cash registers empty and open after hours  Move valuable merchandise and business equipment away from windows or doors  Alternate the direction of hangers on racks, tie appliance cords together, lock up small valuables in cabinets/showcases to deter theft  Keep window displays clear so police are able to see into the business  Anchor your safe to a well-lit, highly visible location  Keep all valuable documents and items in a safe  Always leave an interior light on that is visible from the street  Inspect all closets, bathrooms, and other potential hiding places before closing to keep from locking a burglar on the inside

“Good security is never convenient,” said Captain Joseph Nunez, from the Cerritos Sherriff’s Station. “The mantra ‘if you see something, say something’ cannot be overstated.” He also reminds business owners that security systems with video surveillance are excellent deterrents. According to Captain Nunez, employee theft is an obvious issue to consider. Contact Daryl Evans, Manager of Community Safety Services for the City of Cerritos at (562) 860-0311 or Captain Joseph Nunez, Cerritos Sherriff’s Station at (562) 467-6804.
