jackson square farmer’s market Professor Michelle Laboy

Students were asked to design the structure of a 16,000 square-foot market located within Jackson Square.

As part of a larger scale urban intervention, the Jackson Square Farmer’s Market intends to represent transition and interstitial form within an area where subneighborhoods are otherwise typologically disconnected. To achieve a shape that could accurately represent its urban context, the market roof was formed through curve stitching in accordance with the building heights closest to each of its corners. Inverse king post trusses connected by tension wires ensure that its 113’-0” roof span is kept aesthetically light and delicate.

The mezzanine level of the market is designed to support two elevated gardens, which allows local vendors to grow, buy and sell organic produce all in one place. The mezzanine, along with a series of public gardens located on-site, allow the market to function as both a wholesale space and community resource. left: Photograph of sectional model.

Professor Lina Toro

Students were asked to design a fitness center for a sport of their choice located in the center of Madrid.

Gymnastics is a performance-based sport; as a result, this project focuses primarily on the dichotomy between performer and viewer. Observation decks and service program create a block that cradles a series of practice and performance areas. The interaction between these two forms ensures that gymnasts and observers remain visually connected, yet spatially separate. For floors that function primarily as practice space, balconies with adjustable mullions allow performers to further control visibility and privacy. from left to right: Rendering from street view, Form progression parti diagram.

blackstone school for the performing arts

Professor Sam Choi

Students were asked to redesign a block adjacent to blackstone square, then design a performing arts school within the parameters of their redesigned urban block.

The Blackstone School for Performing Arts is built around the concept of creating “core� activity spaces; the auditorium acts as an anchor for all related program.

Flexible improvisation spaces and practice rooms encase the auditorium and blend with typical paths of circulation, causing academic program to cluster above an open and transparent first floor.

Fall 2018 Abacus Architects + Planners The Needham Housing Authority Master Plan is a 90-page booklet regarding maintenance and repair, modernization, and redevelopment of NHA properties. The master plan booklet details existing conditions, repairs and improvement options, modernization and new development options, funding sources, cost estimates, and additional resources.

With all existing documents collected and paired with detailed analysis, the challenge of the Needham Housing Authority Master Plan became to compile these documents and articulate new development options in an engaging, convincing way.

Plans and site maps were updated and annotated to develop a comprehensive report of existing conditions on NHA properties.

Renderings were also created from an existing 3D model to visualize design opportunities for future new developments.

weinberg house

Fall 2018 Abacus Architects + Planners The Weinberg House is a 60 unit mixed-use building aimed at unifying a 700 unit apartment complex with the greater community. Its site orientation, massing and adaptation to existing topography encourages neighborhood integration and enhances the lives of all residents.

As the entry point and “hearth� of the building, the lobby of the Weinberg House required significant attention to detail, especially when considering different forms of circulation. The following ASI drawing details were created to supplement building plans and provide direction regarding material changes and issues of accesibility. All ASIs were created from an existing Revit model and annotated under the direction of the Abacus design team.
