GOOGLE HLW INTERNATIONAL

We are the acoustic designers for world’s biggest technology company and have been bringing their signature voice to life in all their spaces in New York City, including 111 Eighth Avenue and Chelsea Market. Paramount to our client is balancing their open workspace, while placing a high value on boundaries, privacy, and comfort. Designing eclectic space types, ranging from open plan office, huddle/ meeting spaces, Tech Talk areas, phone rooms, and various nooks & crannies is a balancing act that, creating an interesting mix of acoustical challenges.

Signature Solution: 111 Eighth Avenue began as a gritty and industrial Port Authority facility, with truck pits and noisy mechanical equipment. In its second life, this building became a carrier hotel for internet businesses, housing miles of complex cabling and even larger, noisier cooling systems. Now it its 3rd evolution, our client has been claiming more spaces throughout the building, albeit the noisy data center equipment remains. Cerami has helped them navigate the acoustical challenges of the building, while maintaining the high level of comfort expected by their hustling and bustling workforce.

There’s always a buzz surrounding this giant search company, as they continue to expand their footprint in Chelsea. Fortunately, there is just the right amount of buzz inside.

Cerami was selected to provide acoustical, technology, and audiovisual consulting services for a new 58-story Philadelphia skyscraper housing 1.2 million square feet of office space and technology rich spaces, including 100,000 square feet of television station studio/office space, the technology center of a large cable company, a customer briefing center, and luxury hotel.

Cerami’s acoustical team is responsible in aiding the architect in the selection of finishes and construction types that provide the needed acoustical performance while supporting the desired aesthetics. Key areas of the space that required focuses included the town hall meeting area, professional studios, indoor park and open offices The high-end, professional live broadcasting studio required a low noise floor and Cerami ensured that the correct material was chosen. The team also identified and presented solutions to reduce noise transfer from the mechanical room directly adjacent to the one of the studios. The team collaborated with the architect in the design of the office areas by designing an “open” metal mesh ceiling to control the build-up and transfer of speech which could otherwise interfere with focus and productivity.

YOUTUBE HLW

Google has dedicated 20,000 square feet of it’s Manhattan campus to YouTube, bringing the company into proximity with more traditional creators of media content, along with a huge new pool of talent.

Cerami and Associates provided acoustical design consulting services for a variety of spaces including recording and production studios, audio and production control rooms, editing rooms, conference room, and a voice over booth.

The outpost includes something called a BrandLab, which offers brands a place to mingle and do business with video creators. Every space is designed to double as a set, for example the lobby can act as an amphitheater, or the conference room as a set for a dinner party.

LINKEDIN M MOSER ASSOCIATES | IA INTERIOR ARCHITECTS

Cerami has been providing acoustical consulting services for LinkedIn located at the Empire State Building. These projects consisted of interior tenant fit-outs for the 3rd, 24th, 25th, and 26th floors. The 3rd and 26th floors consist of workstations, nooks, huddle rooms, team rooms, and kitchen/dining spaces. The 24th floor features a conference center, and the 25th floor includes a 375 SF recording studio.

Cerami worked with the project team to define the acoustical expectations of the project and presented the design challenges in achieving these goals. By working collaboratively with the design team, Cerami helped create spaces that functioned acoustically, while realizing the open concept that LinkedIn desired.

GENSLER + WONDERWALL

Samsung opened their first flagship store in North America, located at 837 Washington Street, New York, NY. This 45,000 SF space features performance and recording spaces, conference rooms, client interactive/showcase spaces, a business center, a sales center, and office floors.

Cerami was chosen to provide acoustical consulting services.

For many of the diverse spaces in the building, acoustical performance is critical to the success of the space from a user and performer standpoint. Areas of particular concern were broadcast and recording booths placed in the middle of a busy retail environment. Cerami implemented acoustical solutions with double glass walls, titled glass paneling, and spring hung ceilings.

ETSY GENSLER

Etsy’s need for workspace that would support various modes of work - social, focused and collaborative- was a design challenge from the onset of the project. Cerami met these goals by using a combination of acoustical details that dovetail to create the appropriate environment. We worked closely with the design team on the acoustical performance of glass office fronts, as well as selecting unique finishes that worked with Etsy’s unique design aesthetic, while maintaining the required acoustical properties.

Cerami provided acoustical consulting for the fit-out of the Associated Press office space in New York City. The 175,000 rsf fit-out consisted of open office, private office, broadcast studio, editing suites, voice over booth, and a large news room.

The goal was to create a new office space with an acoustically coordinated studio and broadcast spaces, as well as an effective and well-controlled open news room. Cerami worked closely with the design team to address mechanical noise and room acoustics for the broadcast and studio spaces and address exterior traffic noise intrusion into the studios along the faรงade.

There were concerns with noise emissions from the base building mechanical systems and elevator pass-bys as well as achieving high ceiling heights while controlling sound build-up. Cerami implemented mechanical system noise control to existing systems and added specialty construction to spaces adjacent to elevator shafts to reduce noise and vibration transfer.

For over 130 years, National Geographic Society has been at the forefront of research, exploration, and conservation to help protect our planet. Through science, technology, and storytelling, they have altered the way we understand and view the world.

In order to sustain their mission and allow for future growth, National Geographic embarked on a mission to create an urban campus that reflects its culture, brand and philanthropic legacy.

The modernization of National Geographic’s headquarters in Washington, DC consisted of substantial renovation of significant portions of the 1600 M Street and historical 16th Street campus locations. Cerami worked alongside JLL and Hickok Cole Architects to design a workplace environment that is visually stimulating, flexible, and fosters collaboration.

The new office was designed as an open work environment with emphasis on shared spaces, unifying multiple departments together and encouraging interactions amongst colleagues.

Centralized communal area and various conference and meeting rooms encouraged lively conversations, while the full-service conference center on the second floor provided a flexible space for leaders, guests, and staff to convene and host mission-related events.

Signature Solution: Two sets of design standards were employed to the project, National Geographic Society’s standard and National Geographic Partners’ standards. Cerami’s information technology, security, audiovisual, and acoustical design services were engaged to support the phased renovation.

Acoustical design was focused on sound isolation to improve speech privacy of office spaces and conferences rooms, and vibration isolation of HVAC units to ensure noise code adherence.

Technology design was focused on delivering similar system capabilities and user interface across all rooms types, as well as providing future-ready system designs that can be iterated, upgraded and eventually superseded without affecting the building infrastructure.

A complete campus security redesign was deployed, replacing the card access and video surveillance platforms with an integrated intelligent electronic Access Control System and the new Video Surveillance System designed in National Geographic Society’s standards. Systems were focused on user-friendly and self-service technology that incorporated interactive capabilities and collaborative tools. Reliable structured cabling systems that support current and emerging technologies to meet presnt and future needs was also incorporated.

HORIZON MEDIA A+I ARCHITECTURE

Horzion Media is a media company that focuses in digital and online advertising and marketing services, therefore the interior design and audiovisual systems needed to reflect both their quality of services, as well as provide a means to showcase their campaigns.

The technology fit-out includes a media wall in the reception/lobby area and flat panel displays in all conference rooms which are tied to multimedia presentation and sound systems - some of which include video and audio conferencing capabilities. The Presentation/ Boardroom room is both long and narrow with glass walls on two sides, a challenge for providing easily viewable audiovisual displays.

We created a custom solution for multiple monitors to be placed above the table on a motorized lift so that it can be lowered when needed for viewing, but raised to provide un-obstructed views of meeting participants.

Additionally, we provided systems for the CEO’s private spaces which includes a private screening room and videoconference room.

MOMA GENSLER

Aspirations for the newly expanded MoMA was achieved through a marriage of science and art, with Cerami’s acoustic engineers and audiovisual consultants making sure that things sound as good as they look. Upon entry you will notice the stunning Blade Stair, the signature circulation centerpiece connecting the old space to the new. Cerami performed a series of detailed acoustical analysis to determine the optimum amount of acoustical absorption that would satisfy design objectives, landing on floor-to-ceiling wood-paneled walls, speckled with millions of barely detectable micro-perforations that absorb sound like a sponge and keep noise from spilling out to the galleries – aligning the sound with the sleek beauty of the design.

Signature Solution: At the heart of the new space is the Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Studio, the world’s first dedicated space for performance, process and time-based art within a museum. Challenged with how to design the Studio to be impervious to NYC’s bustling 53rd Street and ensure its adaptability for an expansive variety of uses, Cerami brought this design challenge into their Immersive Studio so that the MoMA creative team could experience the experience before it was built. Through virtual simulations and numerous iterations, Cerami’s solution was a floating gallery with tilting walls, adjustable banners that can alter the acoustics, and an isolated secondary curtain wall engineered so guests will never know they are in midtown Manhattan. This silence is part of the gallery experience, art you can’t touch, but you can sense; a blank canvas to be transformed with each installation.
