SHRM ESSENTIALS OF HR MANAGEMENT

SHRM Essentials is for:

New or junior HR practitioners.

Small business owners or managers. Job seekers investigating HR as a new career option.

SHRM LEARNING SYSTEM

SHRM-CP certification is for individuals who perform general HR/HR-related duties or for those pursuing a career in Human Resource Management.

SHRM-SCP certification is for individuals who have a work history of at least 3 years performing strategic level HR/HRrelated duties.

Students who earn this certification are eligible for ODU undergraduate credit.

SHRM TEST PREPARATION

For individuals who are scheduled to sit for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP exam and are looking for one final day of preparation before their certification exam.

PARALEGAL CERTIFICATE

This nationally acclaimed non-credit program was designed by attorneys, judges and paralegals, and is taught exclusively by practicing attorneys and judges. The hands-on program distinguishes itself by its focus on real-world skill sets most in demand by law firms and legal divisions. It is designed with the working student in mind and provides the education you need to begin a paralegal career or advance an existing career in the legal field. Students who earn this certification are eligible for ODU undergraduate credit.

CHALLENGING CONTENT

REAL-WORLD INSTRUCTORS

You will learn legal processes, court structure, interviewing, investigation, document preparation, file maintenance, correspondence, research, writing and analysis, as well as substantive topics of law, such as Tort Law, Contract Law and Civil Procedures. Our students also learn LexisNexis and Westlaw, two powerhouses in legal research. Our instructors are all practicing attorneys or judges, which means not only do they hold advanced degrees, but they also have real-world experience and show you how to put theory into practice.

CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER

The Executive Certificate in Financial Planning prepares individuals for success in the demanding but highly rewarding financial planning industry. The courses in this program cover the areas of expertise that are needed to develop comprehensive, effective financial plans for a variety of individual clients. Those who successfully complete the program are awarded a certificate of completion by Old Dominion University. Students who earn this certification are eligible for ODU undergraduate credit.

We are proud to offer comprehensive test preparation classes for a variety of standardized exams, including the SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT, and Praxis. Our expert instructors are highly trained and experienced in these exams and provide students with the tools and knowledge needed to achieve their best possible score. Our classes are designed to give students individualized attention and support, so they can develop their test-taking skills and confidence.

THE CREDENTIALING CENTER

The Credentialing Center at ODU houses credit-bearing and industry certification exams, as well as test preparation courses. Aligning with the University's strategic plan, the Center is at the forefront of community engagement and offers opportunities to ODU students and the general public to enhance their skills and employment/earnings potential.

CERTIFIED MEDICAL ASSISTANT

The Certified Medical Assistant Program will prepare students for an exciting and rewarding career in healthcare! Medical assistants perform clinical and administrative duties and assist a variety of providers including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Your career pathway starts with THREE indemand healthcare certifications: Clinical Medical Assistant, EKG Technician, and Phlebotomy Technician. Students who earn this certification are eligible for ODU undergraduate credit.

CERTIFIED MEDICAL ASSISTANT

Common duties include:

Checking patients in and out upon arrival and departure

Answering phone calls and questions

Assisting providers with exams and procedures

Administering injections or medications

Working with electronic health records (EHR)

Performing EKG, phlebotomy, and laboratory procedures

Taking patients' vital signs

PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN

Draw blood from patients and blood donors

Evaluate patients' ability to withstand procedure

Explain blood-drawing procedure to patients and answer questions

Perform basic point-of-care testing, such as blood glucose levels

Prepare blood, urine, and other specimens for testing

Maintain medical equipment such as needles, test tubes and blood vials

EKG TECHNICIAN

Set up/administer EKGs (electrocardiograms) & stress tests

Prepare patients for Holter or ambulatory monitoring

Edit and deliver final test results to physicians for analysis

Schedule appointments

Transcribe physicians' interpretations

MEDICAL BILLING & CODING

Old Dominion University has partnered with AAPC to help you get certified as a Medical Biller and Coder. You will learn the fundamentals of medical billing and coding and obtain the knowledge, hands-on experience, and industry-recognized credentials to stand out in the fast-growing healthcare industry. No prior medical experience required. Students who earn this certification are eligible for ODU undergraduate credit. odu.edu/cepd

DATA ANALYTICS

The Data Analytics Bootcamp is a part-time, flex, mentor-led Career Bootcamp that covers a variety of tools used to drive and guide complex, big-data-oriented decisions. Learners will become experts in analysis, cleaning, mining, synthesis, and decisionmaking in order to influence key decisions within an increasingly complex business environment.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Over 24 weeks, you will learn how to build, test and deploy software applications using JavaScript on the client- and server-side of an application (front-end + back-end). Starting with fundamentals, you will quickly move into more complex programming concepts that are solidified through challenges, such as: pair programming, weekly projects, lab exercises, and code reviews

DIGITAL MARKETING

The Digital Marketing Bootcamp is a parttime Bootcamp that teaches the essential skills necessary to launch a digital marketing career. Learners will start with the fundamentals and progress through a variety of strategies/topics to solve complex marketing challenges within the evolving tech space.

UX/UI DESIGN

Starting with the fundamentals, students will quickly advance through topics of increasing complexity, applying creative problem-solving skills to design and iterating designs based on research. Students leave this course with a portfolio of work to showcase to potential employers as well as real-world experience that can be immediately applied to a professional career.

Our programs offer advanced education that meets the latest industry standards and innovations and empowers engineers and technical experts to stay ahead in their fields. Each one-day course is available in person or online.

Electrical Engineering Principles

This course is designed for engineers, licensed professional engineers, energy professionals, engineering managers, technical professionals, facilities managers and other professionals who are not intimately familiar or current on electrical engineering principles and practices. No prerequisite required. Since this course takes you from fundamentals on up, even non-engineers – with some math and science background - can take away a commensurate amount of electrical engineering knowledge.

This course is designed for engineers, professional engineers, energy professionals, engineering managers, technical professionals, facilities managers and other professionals who are not intimately familiar or current on finance, accounting, time value of money analysis, and engineering economics principles and practices.

LEAN SIX SIGMA

No matter what company you work for, our Lean Six process improvement certificates can help you build your résumé. Become an indispensable asset by learning how to remove waste and solve problems caused by inefficient business processes. Find out why so many Fortune 500 companies have turned to the fundamentals of continuous improvement, which has resulted in hundreds of billions of dollars in savings. These programs are in collaboration with the University of South Florida.

GREEN BELT

Focusing on managing quality projects utilizing the fundamentals of Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, Lean topics include the concepts of the elimination of waste and reduction of cycle time in organizational processes. Six Sigma principles such as problem solving techniques, data collection and analysis, reduction of process variation, process capability and control, and continual improvement are covered.

BLACK BELT

Build upon process improvement skills acquired during the Green Belt certification with our industry-leading Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification. In seven sessions over two to three months, you'll master the tools to mentor Green Belts and team members using real-world process improvement methods. Black belts leverage the tools and concepts in their Lean Six Sigma "toolbox" to successfully lead projects that deliver meaningful results to the organization.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

PMP® EXAM PREPARATION

Position yourself for a big career move with PMP® Certification. The prestigious Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is a proven way to enhance your resume, elevate your career potential, and boost your earnings. Our course is designed to prepare individuals for the PMP® Exam. The PMP® is highly recommended for experienced project managers looking to advance their skills, career, and earning potential.

Candidates must meet education and experience requirements, agree to a professional code of conduct, and pass the PMP® Exam. Ensure you're prepared for the rigorous PMP® exam with our PMP® Exam Prep course. This intensive 7-12-week program combines expert instruction with the CertWise® Learning System for PMP® Exam Preparation training materials and meets PMI's 35 contact-hour PMP® Exam requirement. Our course will help you learn faster, retain more knowledge, and stay on track for success on the PMP® exam.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Over 15.7 million project management roles will be created globally across seven project-intensive industries, and the economic footprint of the profession is expected to grow by $6.61 trillion. Business leaders recognize how project management skills contribute to a company's growth, innovation and its greater business strategy.

ODU's Graduate Certificate in Project Management (GCPM) will teach you the concepts, management tools and processes required for overseeing projects in the workplace. This certificate also provides the needed to pass the PMP® Exam. Though the PMP® Exam Prep course is not included in this certificate, students enrolling in GCPM will qualify for a discount on their PMP® Prep Course if they choose to take it.

REGISTERED PLAY THERAPY

This program provides professionals and students in the community with the opportunity to learn more about play therapy or to receive the training necessary to become a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). The Play Therapy program is offered as a series of eight (8) weekend workshops worth 19 continuing education hours each (16 contact CEs and 3 non-contact CEs). Individuals can attend one or all of the workshops.

To become a Registered Play Therapist (RPT), individuals must accrue a total of 150 continuing education hours in play therapy per the Association of Play Therapy (APT). Weekend workshops include the content required by APT for any mental health professional interested in attaining the RPT credential. PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP

Our professional leadership certificate teaches you characteristics and skills necessary to lead. Classes focus on organizational/social leadership and provide students an entry point to the University, allowing students to gain a post-secondary credential that can be folded into the BS IDS Leadership major. Required courses include:

CPD 400: FOUNDATIONS OF LEADERSHIP

This course is designed to provide students with a basic introduction to leadership, with a focus on leadership history, leadership styles, traits, and skills. The differences between managers and leaders will be explored.

CPD 410: LEADERSHIP ETHICS

This course examines how ethical principles can be used to guide effective leadership practices. Students will gain an understanding of how ethical principles in the workplace have developed over time. They will also explore the connections between individual ethics and workplace behaviors, in addition to leadership strategies that promote ethical behavior by workers.

CPD 412: LEADERSHIP AND LAW

This course addresses leadership in public, private, and non-profit organizations relative to laws that impact such organizations. Students will examine their role as leaders within legal systems that influence business operations such as employment law, intellectual property, antitrust, white-collar crime, and bankruptcy.

CPD 417: DIGITAL LEADERSHIP

This course explores technology as it relates to leadership experiences. Theories, case studies and real world examples are analyzed to show both successful and unsuccessful uses of online and digital approaches that inform leaders' communication strategies. Students will explore how their own digital identities may impact their futures as leaders. The Department of Homeland Security has a vital mission to secure the nation from threats. In a larger sense, those responsibilities include coordinated efforts to minimize, address, and respond to terrorism, natural disasters, and other large-scale threats to human life, property, and natural resources.

Due to the nature of homeland security work, candidates pursuing opportunities within the field must meet a criterion not generally required of other professionals. By earning a Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security, you will be equipped to address key areas of homeland security planning and organizational imperatives relative to emergency management. Courses within the Graduate Certification in Homeland Security will help candidates develop key skills like leadership, critical thinking and analysis, logistical planning, communication, and problem solving.

REQUIRED COURSE

ENMA 625: INTRO TO HOMELAND SECURITY LOGISTICS

An introduction to homeland security and principles of all-hazards risk management. Topics to be addressed include the balance among different hazards in mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery; the impacts of illegal and legal immigration on the economic and social stability of communities; and the emergence and evolution of threats in cybersecurity, cybercrime, and critical infrastructure.
