oming into the school year, freshmen have to get used to many new things. They are in a new, bigger school where they are the youngest. The freshman dance is their first high school dance that both seniors and freshmen look forward to every year. They look forward to gomg to the dance and meeting new freshmen , while being able to get to know some of the seniors from Interact also. Every year, Interact sets up the freshman dance. They do everything from decorating, creating the theme, and dancing. The semors help set the mood and make the freshmen more comfortable. This year the theme was white out and many freshman wore

Boys Soccer kicks it into gear and ends the season with a bang A rough start to the 2010 boys' soccer season didn't prevent them from later turning the season around, growing stronger and starting to play as a team. 'We had a very up and down season, but we ended on a good note" said senior capta1n, Ben "The Flood" Flodstrom. Looking at the Chargers' final record of 1211-2, people m~ght th1nk they struggled this year, but they proved everyone wrong during their m~racle of a post season. After beating Central 3-2 in the first round of Regionals, the Chargers faced Urbana. The game was 120 minutes of aggressive play, exhausted legs, and many nail-biting shots on goal. The Chargers won with the help of a tremendous performance by

Andrew Drackley in a penalty k1ck shoot out. In the Sect1onal finals game, the Chargers came from behind to beat Chatham Glenwood 3-2. Super Sectional's saw the end of an amaz1ng run into the post season when the Chargers lost 1-o While their "post season magic" eventually ran out, the Chargers still showed what determination and the will to win can do.

The 2010 Centennial g1rls' tenms team kept their expectations high. Maria Mears commented , 'Our main goal was to w1n conference." ng Chargers stuggle this s ut find a meaningful victory again Central The 201 0 JV football team was propelled by the extreme skill of Mitchell Hauser and Chris Morris. The team struggled with the loss of many key players to the varsity team this season, but overcame these challenges and many others with a posit1ve attitude. In a football season with only n1ne games, every game counts. The team was not the most successful th1s year as they struggled to a Q-8 start. They fought through the season looking for a win. This win came the last game of the season against Central and was the highlight. The frustration that the team had built up during the long, tenuous season , and the added heat of the cross-town rivalry

prepared the Chargers better than ever fo this game. The team won 12-0 against the Maroons and earned their first vistory. Chri Morris commented the game: "After a start to this season, was good to finally a win at the end and pecially good to get against Central." Words Peter Black Photography Mart1n

It was double the trouble at Centennial when spirit week came around. There were flash backs to the 80's and cookie monsters walking the halls. "We fancy huh?" and "We almost made it!" were two popular shirts worn by the junior and sophomore classes. One very recognizable pair was the "Barbie workout" twins. "Ally and I had an inside JOke with the whole "Barbie" th1ng , so we just made 1t a costume because we had no other ideas. We just bought a sweatshirt and cut off the shoulder, and used everything else with what we already had," said Barbie twin , Chelsey Meislahn. Later that mght all of the twins got together to get warm and cozy by the bonfire.

This year's homecoming was a good ending to a fun and thrilling homecoming week, providing a fun release from school. Elizabeth Dombrowski leads a talented team through a fantastic season. Golf has always been a sport of precision, honesty, and etiquette. The 2010 Centennial Girts' Golf team displayed all these qualities throughout their season making for a very successful year. Five returning seniors worked along with hardworking newcomers and underclassmen, creating the perfect recipe for a stellar season. One of the team's highlights was winning the Leroy Scramble. What was unique about this tournament was the scoring format. Instead of the typical invitational where only four scores count

from each team, the entire team contributed to the win over rival St. Thomas More by one stroke. The leader of the team was senior Elizabeth Dombrowski, pictured above. She consistently led the area wrth her nrne hole average. The highlight of her season came at the Big 12 Conference tournament where she shot 74 and took home first place. Dombrowski also played very well in the postseason advancing to state and placed 17th. this remarkable win was the perfect end note for the Lady Chargers.

With no seniors on the varsity squad the Chargers have a bright futur ahead of them. As an athlete, the second before a cross country race starts is one of the most nerve wrack1ng things in all of sports. All of a sudden, the starting sound goes off, and you begin to run with a huge burst of adrenaline. All of these qualities are what make cross country a un1que and exhilarating sport. The 2010 Chargers had high expectations for the team as they looked to build off of a great season in 2009. With no seniors on the varsity squad, the underclassmen knew they had to step up their game in order to be successful as a team. Parkour is a sport where one daringly overcomes obstacles by runnmg , climbing, or leaping over then at h1gh speed. "It's kind of an extreme sport," says Jonah. The Chiefs' season starts in September and ends in March. Balancing homework and hockey is hard

because the sport takes up so much of the players' time. The 201 Q-2011 boys swimming and diving season was one theat surp1sed everyone, including the team itself. With a new coach and several new SWimmers on the team, the season started on shaky ground. One of those new faces was Gabrial Omo-Osagie, pictured above, who ironically had a great deal of SWimming expenence already under his belt. OmcrOsagie was a huge part of the boys success, especially in the 200 free relay at sectionals that went to State. The captains this year were William Holder, Michael Martin, and William Hazelwood who were very involved in the team's success. The team had a phenomenal Sectional meet with almost everyone improving, thus

eo

leading to a record-setting season! The Centennial divers did exceptionally well th1s year. The diving team cons1sted of William Holder, Luis lian, and Kegan Skelton . William Holder and Kegan Skelton dominated their duals meets this year. Holder ended up finshing 23rd in State and Skelton was the Illinois State Champion and nailed all eleven dives. This was also a special year for legendary diving coach Don Waybright, who retired after 34 years of coaching at Centenntial These major markers in the swimming and diving team s season have created an exciting entry into Centennial 's history book.

African American Talent Show was an exciting and energetic show that was based off the Harlem Renaissance, which was a renewal of flourishing black literature and musical culture in the 1920's. The performers 1n the show made the aud1ence a part of the show by interacting with them and running through the auditonum's isles. The show included many different and bold acts that included danc1ng, reading or 1nterpret1ng poems, rapp1ng, s1ng1ng, solo acts, and even skits. To be a part of the show, an aud1t1on was required. Bnanna Patterson said ''I knew I would have fun s1ng1ng, but I was nervous about being on stage. Pract1c1ng and passing the audition helped me get over my fear." The performers brought charisma and an overall bond that was

The Afncan Amencan Talent show 1s a great presentation of talent as well as African Amencan history. Sharon thinks that The African A mer· ican Talent Show is great event because it defies some African Americar stereotypes and gives a chance for many different people to show o their talents when otherwise the would not have been given a chance to The performers brought animation to Centennial's Aldridge Auditoriurr and the audience w1ll always remember the show as an electrifying ex· penence. Centennial students won't be d1sapo1nted by attending the African Amencan Talent Show.

With team unity and hard work th

boys worked hard to make it to the top.

The Centennial wrestlers came ready for the takedown this year. With hard work, weight lifting, and true passion for the sport, the boys came out on top. They did extra training outside of practice to enhance their skills and to prepare for the season ahead of them. Junior Archie Williams stated,"l did a lot outside of practice to get ahead. I did extra work including running outside by myself almost everyday to get in even better shape and to excel this year."

10

Archie Williams I'm too swole, too swole!

The boys did really well at putting every ounce of effort into thier season. They pulled out a win against Decatur Eisenhower and Urbana, but they also had huge, upsetting losses against Central and Bloomington. No matter how they did in the season, they rocked in the post season with more wins than losses. They worked so well as a team and even stood by Archie Williams when he excelled in State this year. He got 5th in state and worked hard to get there. Overall, a great season by these boys.

ne of the most exciting aspects of Centennial s Science Olympiad team is the members enthusiasm for sc1ence. This team competes 1n all areas of sc1ence, from biology to engineering, by creating hands-on classroom proJects. This year's projects 1nclude a mus1cal instrument and an actual robot! One of the unique things about the Sc1ence Olympiad program 1s how it combines several d1schpnes of sc1ence 1nto the vanous competitions. On March 12, 2011, twelve h1gh schools competed 1n the Sc1ence Olymp1ad Regional at Parkland Community College Led by their faculty sponsor Ms. Elizabeth Sudlow, Centenmal's Sc1ence Olymp1ad team placed second 1n the Division C compet1t1on. Mrs. Webbink started at Centennial in 1993, in the Math Department. She sa1d that when she first started teach1ng here , there was much more respect helfd for faculty and staff, and==§~~~~===~··language was not as bad. "It has been a privilege to work with other teachers 1n th1s bulld1ng because I th1nk that we have the best!" says Mrs. Webb1nk. She has been an important part of the math department for 18 years, and her org~nialty will be m1ssed.

1

Mrs. Tangora started when Centennial was JUSt a baby; she started 1n 1969 just one year after the high school was bu1lt, then took maternity leave 1n the fall and returned in the fall of 1986 when Centennial was well 1nto 1t's teenage years! She is always found with a smile on her face and and a cheery hello! her motto while teaching has been "Do what you love, and do it with passion." Your pass1on will1ve on!

Mrs. West has been walking and playtng basketball at Cen tennial as one o our beloved P.E teachers since the groovy year of 1974. She earned the nickname "Booga Brown" wh1le teaching girls basketball and volleyball, when her maiden name was M1ss Brown. Mrs. West's final thoughts on Centennial are, "YEAHI I've made it through andother wonderful years at Centennial. Now I can move on to other adventures and challenges." Good luck in your future endeavours, and enjoy your new RV! In the fall of 1985, a hip and groovy new teacher walked through the front doors of this wonderful school and has been with us for 26 joyous years. Mr. Yanchus says, "I have been blessed to have enjoyed many a great years at Centennial" We have been blessed to have you from your "Hear yee Hear yee! speech announcements to your wake up yell.
