Dear Friends,
Welcome to Murder, Plain and Simple a melodramatic comedy filled with pearl-clutching suspense, slapstick mischief, and just the right amount of poison in the teacup all for your viewing pleasure!
As the winner of our 21st Annual New Play Festival, Meghan Reimers’ deliciously twisted farce delighted our reading committee and audiences alike with its pitch-perfect blend of satire and sincerity. It’s a play that knows exactly what it is an uproarious throwback to the classic murder mystery complete with a scheming nephew, a crafty cousin, an unexpected proposal, and a very inconveniently undead aunt.
Meghan, a local playwright, musician, and educator, crafts her worlds with gleeful abandon and sharp precision. Her script invites the audience to join the fun, lean into the absurd, and laugh at the delightfully over-the-top antics of characters who are, quite literally, dying for an inheritance. Having known Meghan for many years, it is an honor to be able to present her work to our audiences with a team of incredibly talented theatre artists.
At Centre Stage, we believe new voices are the lifeblood of the American theatre. This annual festival is one of our proudest traditions an opportunity to nurture and launch bold new works. We’re thrilled to give Murder, Plain and Simple its fully staged debut and share it with you tonight. Theatre is supposed to be fun, memorable, thought-provoking, and inspiring. We hope you walk away from this production with a smile in your heart and gratitude for the artistic work being done right here in our community. I know I will! This production is a gift to the community as much as it is a gift to be able to produce it.
Thank you for being part of this celebration of new work. We hope you laugh, gasp, and clutch those pearls tight!
With heartfelt gratitude,
Laura Nicholas Managing Artistic Director, Centre Stage
