With this 24th edition, we celebrate two full years of Under the Dome! What began as a bold idea replacing our weekly bulletins with a more in-depth, visually engaging monthly newsletter has grown into something truly special
Since day one, the goal has been to reflect the vibrant life of Central United Methodist Church, not only for our members, but for visitors and the wider community The positive feedback we’ve received has been humbling, and I continue to work hard to refine both the design and the content with each new edition.
Of course, this wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our program staff and clergy, whose contributions bring every issue to life
If you have ideas for future editions, I’d love to hear them just send them my way and I’ll bring them to our team. Here’s to many more editions ahead. Thank you for reading and supporting Under the Dome!

LETTER FROM OUR SENIOR PASTOR
Rev. Thomas Smith Senior Pastor
Dear Friends,
A couple of weeks ago, we had a congregational meeting to discuss Central’s financial state. Before I reflect further on that meeting, I want you to hear two words from me Thank you! I am grateful for the faithfulness displayed by the people of Central Over the past six years, we as a church family have navigated unprecedented times
At the meeting, we looked at charts and graphs We heard from some of our church’s leaders To summarize, we discussed the realities of Central’s current financial situation, and we heard about what is needed for Central to faithfully follow Jesus by loving God and loving our neighbors.
Among the things we talked about was Central’s Summer Giving Challenge In the months of June and July, our Stewardship Committee is challenging the people of Central to give an additional $300,000 to offset our budget deficit That sounds like a lot of money because it is a lot of money. To help us wrap our minds around increased giving at that level, I’ll share a story
Back in the 1920's, a family in a small, rural town lost their sole milk cow to disease. Hard times hit the agricultural South before the stock market crash of 1929, and the family could not afford to buy a new cow. As the mother and father were up late worrying about what to do, one of them remembered another family whose cow had stopped producing milk The father approached the other family’s father
That conversation uncovered a third family in a similar situation. In the end, the three families pooled their resources and bought a cow together The new cow produced more than enough milk to provide for all three families By themselves, the three families were in trouble But when these families put their small amounts of money together, they had dairy products in abundance!
A member of one of my former churches shared this story with me She was a child in one of the families. Even as a young child, the lesson from this experience stuck with her It serves as a powerful illustration to me Even when our resources are scarce, we can join our small amounts with our brothers’ and sisters’ small amounts, and there will be more than enough to tackle the needs at hand
I am grateful and amazed at the way the people of Central band together to ensure that ministry and mission continue. In this moment of church life, please prayerfully consider how you can contribute
Yours in Christ,

MESSAGE FROM OUR CLERGY
Rev. Meg Bryce Jiunnies
Pastor of Faith Formation & Discipleship
Dear Church Family,
Sometimes my giggle box gets overturned, as my grandfather used to say It doesn’t happen quite as often as it did when I was younger, but it does seem to happen at some inappropriate times!
Worship is one of the most joyful parts of my life, and very few moments are more joyful than a baptism, especially with a sweet-faced, active baby. And recently in the many baptisms Central has enjoyed, we have had some absolutely joy-filled moments!
I got tickled at a little man recently, tickled
studying strangers in robes handling her
(whom I remember as little ones) getting f
the squirmy baby, and tickled at the chuck
struggled to get the liturgy out (and serious e me

But What better place to be overcome with happiness than in worship? What better time than at the antics of a precious baby? What better way of living into our vows at the baptism of nurturing him in the life of the church? There might have been an errant chuckle or two, but the sentiment of commitment was absolutely present I feel certain these children will receive Christian education, nurture and support from this congregation just as so many have before them.
Don’t miss out on the joy this month, or the comfort, the grace, or the community I hope to see each of you very soon!
Blessings and Peace,
Meg

"How many fleurettes are in the Sanctuary ceiling?" I was asked that question during my inaugural tour of Central three years ago, and I've never discovered the answer to that question I've been too caught up in worship through the melody streaming and pulsing through the pipes, the excellent choir anthems, the blue aura of the stained glass, and your attentive (mostly) faces tuned to the glory of God.
But I have familiarized myself with the joy of greeting you in The Commons and in The Well on Sunday mornings; your commitment to mission and ministry and willingness to get busy with the work of God; the pain in your eyes behind a strained smile following the death of a loved one; our hands clasped in private prayer; learning the hurts of your heart in counseling; the way The Well fills up at the last minute; being moved to tears by The Well band in worship.
I can't tell you how many fleurettes there are in Central's Sanctuary, but I know your love, your many words of encouragement and support over the years. I know your heart, your love for Central and for one another I have been permanently altered and imprinted by these things, especially your friendship Leaving Central tugs down on my heart. But I am lifted and buoyed by my faith in the forever goodness of God and his perfect will for my life, and for yours, through Christ
We can both grieve and celebrate a change of pastors. The number of fleurettes will never change, but you will continue to be transformed ever more into the image of Christ under the pastoral leadership of Thomas, Meg, and Rusty

Rev.RustyCrimm
Greetings!

My name is Rusty Crimm and I am the new Associate Pastor at Central United Methodist Church! I’m coming to you having spent the past year as the pastor of Lamar United Methodist Church in the Hartsville District, and I’m thrilled to join you in mission and ministry! My journey to joining you here at Central includes having served in lay and clergy capacities in nearly a dozen churches across three Conferences since 2015 and, as of Annual Conference 2025, I am a Provisional Deacon here in the South Carolina Conference.
Before I earned my Master of Arts in Practical Theology from Pfeiffer University, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from the University of Louisville (Go Cards!). In my previous life I was a middle school band director and left that career in 2015 to pursue a call to ministry For 26 years I called Louisville, KY home before moving to Greensboro, NC in 2018 Then, at the end of 2018, I got married and moved to Manning with my wife, Katherine, who is an Elder in the SC Conference. This summer she begins the third year of her appointment just down the road at Highland Park UMC where she serves as Senior Pastor Together we have a 4 1/2 year-old daughter named Frances Joy (also called “Tancy”) who loves gymnastics, singing, dancing, church, and snacks.
Having grown up Baptist, I joined the United Methodist Church in 2010 and was immediately taken with John Wesley’s concept of grace the prevenient grace that constantly pursues and assures us, the justifying grace that convicts us, and the sanctifying grace that allows us to pursue righteousness. This idea that God’s grace allows us to continue trying and spurs us on towards perfection is a comforting thought, and one that colors my entire approach to faith and ministry And recently the Council of Bishops released a new vision statement that “the United Methodist Church forms disciples of Jesus Christ who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously in local communities and worldwide connections,” and as someone committed to the work of compassion and justice, I’m excited to work together with you to fulfill this vision!
My first Sunday with you will be June 29, and I look forward to serving and worshiping alongside the saints at Central!
Grace and peace, Rusty

Lighting Project in The Well
If you've been in the Davis Christian Life Center recently, you may have noticed something different our stage lighting has undergone a major upgrade! We’re excited to share that new stage lighting has been installed, bringing enhanced clarity, warmth, and focus to The Well worship services, performances, and special events held in this space
Lighting plays a powerful role in creating an atmosphere that draws us into deeper worship and connection Whether it’s illuminating a speaker, highlighting a moving song, or setting the tone for a dramatic moment in a musical or stage performance, these new lights allow us to better serve our mission: to share the message of Christ with excellence, creativity, and impact
As Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path ” We pray this new lighting will help us reflect the light of Christ more clearly and beautifully in all we do

BALCONYFRIENDS ISCOMINGJULY9!
Back in the summer of 2011 or 2012, Rev. Cynthia Taylor and Missy Brown came up with a great idea based on a book called Balcony People by Joyce Landorf Heatherly It’s a little book with a big idea: some people are those who support us and cheer us on in life, and this is definitely what Christian community should be like!
So now, every summer, we come together for a relaxed and meaningful time of connection sharing our stories, listening to inspiring speakers, and simply being our "summer selves" It’s a casual gathering for women of all ages, and everyone is welcome to bring a friend!
We meet for about an hour, then whoever is able heads out together to enjoy a shared meal filled with laughter and fun There’s no registration and no need to prepare just come as you are, ready to explore what discipleship looks like in our everyday lives
This year, we’re excited to welcome a special guest, so don’t miss out come join in the fun! Meet at 5:30 PM on Wednesdays under the balcony!

OutreachMinistries
TheBlessingBox

Did you know that The Blessing Box is a shared ministry between Central UMC and our neighbor, Cumberland UMC? It is positioned on our side of Coit Street the road that runs between our two churches where it is accessible to those in need 24 hours a day, every day. This box lives up to its name it is indeed a blessing to many Every other month, a Sunday School class or group from Central is responsible for keeping The Blessing Box stocked. Cumberland stocks it during the other months.
The Blessing Box is a vital ministry of Central's Outreach mission. God and Jesus have a lot to say about our mandate to feed the hungry:
Ending hunger for good is part of God's restoration of a new, perfect creation. This verse from Revelation 7:16 proves that relieving hunger is God's plan for all people: “Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst ” Psalm 146:7 reveals God's intent toward all his human children, especially those on the margins the oppressed, the prisoner, the blind and the hungry: “He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry ” Matthew 14:16 reveals God's will for hungry people to be fed, and calls his people to participate in providing the food: “But Jesus said, ‘They need not go away; you give them something to eat ’ ”
Matthew 25:35-37 connects feeding the hungry to ministering to Jesus himself Caring for the vulnerable isn't just caring for them, it is also caring for Jesus: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
Central's Outreach team provides many opportunities to serve each need above revealed in Scripture that are our mandate to serve and bless God. We'd love to have you join us! Contact the church office with questions about The Blessing Box or any other Outreach ministries you'd like to learn more about

ThePowerofanInvitation
Have you ever paused to think about how you first came to church? For many of us, it wasn’t because we saw an ad, stumbled across a website, or just decided to walk in one day. More often than not, it was because someone invited us. A friend, neighbor, coworker, or family member extended a simple but powerful invitation and that one act changed everything.
Inviting someone to church is one of the most meaningful ways we can share our faith. It’s not about having all the answers or delivering a polished speech—it’s about extending the love and welcome of Christ. In a world where so many people are searching for connection, hope, and meaning, your invitation might be exactly what someone needs.
It could be as simple as:
“Want to sit with me at church this Sunday?”
“Our church has a great music program come hear it sometime.”
“We’ve got a Bible study starting soon I’d love for you to join.”
We never know what God might do through one invitation.
So pray about whom God is placing on your heart. Look for the opportunity. Be bold, be kind, and extend the hand of invitation. You may be opening the door to a life forever changed. “Go out into the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.” – Luke 14:23
