What better time than the start of a New Year for us to launch our new look Central Magazine. We’re enormously proud of the magazine and all it has achieved over many years. But the time was right for a makeover and we’re thrilled with the results.

Martin and I would like to offer our special thanks to Clair at Orton PR and our wonderful new designer Jodie Withers, for the fantastic job they’ve done on our new magazine.

We are also delighted to be able to use the magazine to showcase the invaluable work undertaken by The Fellowship. At Central, we have long supported this hard working hair organisation and, as our extensive feature shows, the Fellowship is now working harder than ever to engage with young stylists. We encourage all our learners and salons to get involved and sample some of the many opportunities membership offers, so it’s great to showcase in this issue initiatives including the F.A.M.E. Team and Project X. You can also see the finalists’ work from the 2018 Photographic Competition held at Wella in London. We were thrilled to once again host the event at the fabulous Wella Studios and, without doubt, this was our best competition to date. We will be hosting the finals at Wella again this year and we urge all learners and salon owners to really get behind the competition and enter!

The experience you will gain is invaluable in furthering your hairdressing career and it’s great fun too!

We would also like to remind you all that if you have a friend or relative that is interested in a hairdressing career, then please put them in touch with Central. We also offer many other exciting apprenticeship programmes too.

FELLOWSHIP FOR BRITISH HAIRDRESSING

A meeting of minds paving the way for career success For hairdressers working in the UK, The Fellowship for British Hairdressing could not be more aptly named as it offers support, opportunity and camaraderie to all its members.

Embracing the digital platform has been at the heart of attracting a younger audience. The Live Lounge attracts lots of viewers who can watch as leading hairdressers discuss their work and careers.

Established 71 years ago, the Fellowship now has 650 members and, as it has grown, it has changed and developed to ensure it meets the demands of an industry that is very different to when it was founded.

Any member can present their work to be featured on the Fellowship instagram account and events such as Hair & Vision, which are staged across the UK, allow members to get up close and personal with contemporary hairdressing visionaries.

For the past two years, President Karine Jackson has both driven and overseen exciting developments at the Fellowship and feels proud that she has achieved pretty much what she set out to do.

Having enjoyed a 30 year career in hairdressing, Karine has personally derived huge benefits from being a Fellowship member. Coming to England from her native Australia, Karine found herself working for Charles Worthington who was a member of the organisation. When she opened her own salon in 2003 in Seven Dials, Covent Garden, she immediately became a member salon.

She said: “When I became President my manifesto was to get young people feeling passionate about the industry and to further unite everyone working in hairdressing.

“I feel that many of the initiatives we have launched and the events we have staged have achieved this.”

04. Fellowship

“I knew I would need business support and affordable ways to educate my team, “ she said. “The Fellowship provided me with this and lots more as well.”

The Fellowship now offers more ways than ever before for young stylists to showcase their talents and get recognition for their work. For those at the start of their careers and aged between 16 and 25 ClubStar Membership offers a chance to learn from senior industry figures and get valuable stage experience via ClubStar nights.

And, since 2014, ClubStar members can try out for The ClubStar Art Team. Members of the Team get to take part in more Fellowship stage presentations and attend incredible mentoring days.

For those further down the line, The Fellowship Academy of Merit and Excellence, is an annual initiative established in 1993 to nurture, promote and encourage elite up-and-coming hairdressers in all aspects of the industry.

The F.A.M.E Team is perhaps the best independent platform for young, creative stylists and can provide an ideal opportunity to kick start a great career. You just have to take a look at some of the past F.A.M.E team members who include Adam Reed, Errol Douglas, Robert Eaton, Jamie Stevens, Zoe Irwin and Antoinette Benders, to see how effective it can be in terms of launching great careers.

For those not wanting a career in the limelight, but keen to develop their abilities and skillset, the Project X and Colour Project schemes could not be better.

Project X has been described as the ‘ultimate hairdressing finishing school.’ It is a great way for anyone hoping to make their mark in the industry to learn from some legendary stylists. A whole variety of courses are covered and, at the end, there is an award for the Project X student of the year.

The Colour Project is the industry’s first colour specific annual programme that allows access to the artistry of some of the finest colourists in the UK. There are seminars and hands-on master classes that allow participants to take their colour work to a whole new level.

Like many salon owners, Karine has encouraged her staff to partake in both Projext X, the Colour Project and audition for ClubStar and the F.A.M.E teams.

She said: “These are excellent and affordable ways for young hairdressers to learn and get valuable exposure. The PR opportunities are also fantastic and you get the chance to work with some amazing people.�

Prior to taking on the role of President, Karine spent four years as Fellowship Chancellor, overseeing the rules and logistics of the many competitions staged by the organisation.

06. Fellowship

The decision to step up to the Presidency role was taken because she wanted to give more back to an industry which has given her so much.

“I felt there was a lot I could do having personally benefited so much from membership to the Fellowship,” she said. “I think in this country our industry is already very much united and supportive.

I wanted to do what I could to take that to the next level.”

With this in mind, the Fellowship has been active in staging events across the whole of the UK. With Hair & Vision nights in Edinburgh, a presence at HJ Live North and more, the Fellowship want to ensure members everywhere have easy access to stimulating events.

The chance to network at major industry socials such as the The Presidents Night and The annual Fellowship Luncheon is also something Karine values.

She said: “Learning and education are valuable, but so is the chance to mix with your peers and be supportive of each other. Hairdressers in this country are very good at doing this and the Fellowship is a great way to spend time with like-minded people.”

So having devoted so many years to the Fellowship, Karine’s focus will now return to her own salon. With an incredibly hard working team, she has been able to delegate responsibility to make room for her President’s duties but, that is set to change.

With the launch of a new 100% natural product range and a successful business to run, she is excited about spending more time in the salon. But the Fellowship will remain an important part of her professional life.

She said: “I have loved every opportunity the Fellowship has given me and I would urge hairdressers to get involved with the organisation.

Finding fame at the start of a career Young hairdressers wanting experience working on exciting projects outside their salon have found the perfect route via two exciting Fellowship initiatives.

Both the ClubStar Art Team and the equally high profile F.A.M.E team offer young stylists the chance to let their talent shine, make incredible contacts and, most of all, get involved in stage work, fashion shows and shoots.

Ellie Bond, 26, currently works as a stylist at Spargo salon in Brentwood. Ellie began her hair career at Central Hairdressing Academy and, when she completed her training joined her current salon in 2014.

It was during a visit to Salon International organised by Central, that Ellie first became aware of the Fellowship.

She said: “I saw their stand and loved the work they were doing on stage. The shows were so exciting and full of young stylists showcasing some amazing work.�

Reaching the finals of Hairdressers Journal Junior of the Year competition in 2015 brought Ellie in

front of a panel of judges made up of some of the most famous names in hair. They all encouraged Ellie to join the Fellowship and she did exactly that.

As a member, Ellie attended numerous seminars, workshops, shows and more but she aspired to get even more out of her membership.

Having entered the Central photographic competition while an apprentice and reached the finals, Ellie wanted to do more photographic work and set her heart on becoming a member of the ClubStar Art Team.

She said: “I never thought I would stand a chance, but in 2016 I finally gave it a go as I was soon going to be 25 and would be too old to apply.”

The picture she submitted was enough to win her a place in the finals and she ultimately made it through to the team. Highlights from her year include developing her presentation skills with Debbie Gee, developing her colour skills with Karine Jackson and cutting skills with the HOB Team.

It was her ClubStar mentor, Simon Tuckwell, who encouraged her to go on and try for the F.A.M.E team.

“I thought it was too soon and I would never get through,” she said. “But Simon pointed out that I had nothing to lose and I could always try again.”

Winning a place on the team was a huge career high point. Fifteen stylists made it through to the first round with eight being selected to go through to the grand finals which took place live at Salon International.

After a nerve wracking series of stage presentations, Ellie learnt that she was one of just FOUR people to make the elite team!

She describes her year on the team as ‘the best year of my life’ full of once in a lifetime opportunities.

Highlights include a trip to Melbourne to take part in Hair Expo and getting to work alongside her personal hero, Nick Irwin, who is a mentor to the F.A.M.E team.

The work she created on shoots with Nick and photographer Rankin will be treasured for a lifetime and she remains close to Nick, regularly assisting him on shoots.

She said: “One of the best ways for any young hairdresser to learn and develop their skills is to assist people they admire.”

Having won the Future Talent award at the Essex Salons Awards 2017, Ellie then went on to win Stylist of the Year 2018 at the same awards. This year she is looking forward to adding further to her impressive portfolio of work.

She believes the Fellowship has something to offer all young stylists and credits it with being the launch pad for her own career.

She added” The Fellowship kick-started my career and allowed me to work with the very best creative talent in our industry. I have met and learnt from people I admire and got to work with some of the greatest names in the industry.”

COLOUR PROJECT SARAI HAIR & BEAUTY

Educating future generations of stylists Developing skills is one of the key roles undertaken by the Fellowship ensuring hairdressers in the UK maintain their reputation as some of the most talented in the world.

has met once a month with a mentor and worked regularly with high profile hairdressers in areas including wig making, cutting, session work and presentation skills.

Fellowship member, Sarah Morrissey runs Sarai Hair in Crowthorne, Berkshire, and is a strong advocate of the education programmes developed and run by the Fellowship.

Sarah added: “Kelsey has learnt so many new things through Project X, but it has also motivated and inspired her. She is excited to do her job everyday armed with what she has learnt as part of the team.”

“When we first signed up to the Fellowship we were not really that active,” she said. “But a couple of years ago we became aware of just how much was on offer and we attended lots of courses, workshops and live events.”

The same can be said of Sarai stylist, Natalie Newton. With a real passion for hair colour Natalie, 32, was the ideal candidate for the Colour Project.

As well as working with Darren Ambrose and Chris Williams of RUSH, Natalie has had the chance to get involved with photo shoots and seen her work appear on social media.

When her team first presented a show at the Members Night they got valuable feedback which they took on board before taking to the stage again last year.

After this show, team members were invited to take part in events organised by the Fellowship at Salon International!

Part of the improvement Sarah believes was down to her investing in her staff and sending them on the Fellowship Project X and the Colour Project programmes.

Stylist Kelsey Franklin, 27, applied and was accepted for Project X. As part of a small team of eight, Kelsey

The course introduced her to Karine Jackson who invited her to work with her backstage at London Fashion Week and, as a result, her confidence has soared.

While Natalie and Kelsey have grown individually as stylists, the Fellowship has allowed the team to grow closer together.

Sarah explained: “Attending the Fellowship events is a great opportunity for our team to come together.

We make a real night of it and enjoy dinner before and maybe some drinks after. It has been a fabulous way for us all to bond.”

16. Photographic Competition

CENTRAL PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION YOUNG TALENT SHINES BRIGHT Talented young hair stylists created striking looks that wowed the judges in the annual Central Hairdressing Academy photographic hairdressing competition.

This year’s competition attracted a record number of entries with apprentices from across Essex, London and Hertfordshire submitting photographic entries to be considered by a panel of first round judges made up of super stylists Anne Veck and Gianni Scumaci alongside ndustry experts Jodie Withers, Editor of Good Salon Guide and Nicky Pope, UK publisher for Tribu-te Magazine.

Kevin Day, Academy Principal at Alan d Hairdressing, was one of the live final judges and he described the work as ‘some of the best’ he had seen at any hair competition.

He was especially impressed by the ambitious work produced by the youngest entrants into the Avant Garde category.

He said: “If they can achieve this kind of work at the earliest stage of their careers, then the styles they will be producing later will be something really special.

Trying to select just 30 entrants to go through to the live final was a tough task and those chosen showed the true diversity and creativity of all the work produced.

“Judging this competition has made me feel that, right now, our industry is in a great place in terms of young talent, enthusiasm and commitment.”

For the first time in several years, the live finals event was held at Wella in the fabulous London studio located in The Strand. As well as a superb theatre area which housed the catwalk shows, finalists had lots of prep rooms at their disposal, as well as the best tools and equipment to help recreate their looks.

High praise was also given to two former Central learners, Tyler Peters and Lillie Sutton, who took to the stage to demonstrate barbering and styling skills that have led them to enjoy hugely successful careers.

Choosing either an Avant Garde or a What’s Hot look, the finalists recreated not only the hair, but the make-up and clothes styling in readiness for a stunning series of catwalk shows which received a rapturous response from the packed audience.

Tyler started his career training at Central Hairdressing Academy in London and now works at Ruffians Barbers in Shoreditch. Lillie, a former winner at the photographic competition, has spent time in London salons, Daniel Galvin and Hershesons and is now based at NOVO in Southend.

A VISIONARY APPROACH TO HAIR EDUCATION The title Vision Director could not be better suited to Gianni Scumaci who has developed a unique and very forward thinking approach to hairdressing education.

Two years ago, Gianni was approached by John Frieda to implement his education programme at both the John Frieda salon and the Nicola Clarke at John Frieda salon. The programme had been carefully developed following Gianni’s 25 years experience in the industry working on the salon floor, as a session stylist and as an educator.

Gianni calls his education system the trilogy as it is based on three clear objectives: discover, create and evolve. It is a language in hair.

The journey begins with educating a team to all speak the same language.

Gianni added: “It is vitally important that when you start learning, everyone is speaking the same language.

That way we are all on the same page.”

Next comes the creating process, where the language is used to make words. Technique and the creation of individual looks come together and

ultimately move forward to the third stage of the learning programme.

Evolve is when the letters and words learnt begin to make their own stories in terms of hair and true creativity is given full reign.

This visionary process has certainly worked for Gianni’s own career. By the age of 10 he was cutting hair and, by 14, had toured the UK helping to deliver hair seminars on stage.

In 1999, he went to work at Sassoon in London and became the youngest Creative Director in the company’s long history. As well as being hugely influential in the cutting and styling of Sassoon’s international campaigns, Gianni’s session work also put him on the map.

In 2000 he created ‘The Fanni’, a haircut that had global impact on the fashion world from designers including Gucci and Gap. The haircut also became a question in the popular board game Trivial Pursuit!

Working with some of the greatest names in the hair and fashion industry including David Bailey, Patrick Demarchelier, Vogue and Juicy Couture, further ignited Gianni’s passion to share his knowledge and experience via education.

When he first arrived at John Frieda, he set about developing a teaching team but he operated very much under the radar so he could see exactly how his vision for education and staff development could progress.

Having built a strong teaching team, Gianni started to share his vision with young staff and quickly started to create a better understanding of how they could develop and improve their craft. Setting tangible targets meant that the output of each team member also increased.

His approach to education made the team more confident and excited to understand why they were doing things in a certain way. Techniques were developed along with improved communication ultimately leading to more clients coming through the door.

With a strong internal education programme established, Gianni felt the time was right to work with a new external training provider and decided that Central Training Group/Joshual Galvin Academy were the right choice.

He said: “Central had a very different approach which I really liked.

“They understood exactly what I was trying to achieve with my approach to training and we completely connected. They support what we do here and work very much in a solution based way.”

The new approach to education introduced by Gianni and supported by the Central team has meant that there has never been a stronger belief in, or passion for, the John Frieda brand.

A strong team means good staff retention and there is a high level of job satisfaction.

As well as working with young team members, Gianni’s programme is relevant for stylists at every level of their career and he continues to learn every day and refine his skills.

He continues to work as a much in-demand stylist himself and enjoys this aspect of his role as much as he ever did.

He added: “It’s fantastic being able to work with clients. It gives me the perfect chance to practise what I preach!”

THE APPRENTICE SPEAKS

For Gianni, his vision for the best hair training is clear, but what’s it like being an apprentice at John Frieda and being part of that vision? We asked Pavel Nikolov, 22, who started working at the salon eight months ago for his views on the education.

Central: Why did you want to work at John Frieda?

Pavel: The salon had been recommended to me as somewhere I would get a really good training.

Central: Has the training delivered met your high expectations?

Pavel: It’s been fantastic. I work with four trainers and they are all amazing. They are very friendly and always happy to help. They’re always prepared to spend as much time as I need to get something right.

Central: What do you think makes the training different from your experience at other salons?

Pavel: Here we are really taught how important it is to communicate with the clients. The help we get with communication skills makes me feel more confident about my job.

Central: How far have you progressed with the training?

Pavel: I have nine cuts that I need to complete as part of my training and I am about to finish my second haircut. The structure is very disciplined which is good and I hope, that after one or two years, I will be on the salon floor.

Central: What is it like working with Gianni?

Pavel: It’s great! I really enjoy working with him and assisting him whenever I can. He’s always calm and that’s what makes him such a great teacher. He inspires everyone to learn and, at John Frieda, no matter what level you have reached, the education never stops.

TAKING TO THE STAGE

Verity Clarke, 29, has dreamed of being on stage at Salon for as long as she has worked in the industry.

Having started hairdressing at the age of 21, Verity was delighted to finally be doing what she loved.

She said: “I’ve always messed about with my own hair and have been colouring it since the age of 13.

But I was encouraged to do my ‘A’ levels and go into further education.”

Having gained a diploma in art and design, the attraction of hairdressing remained as strong as ever, so Verity ended up paying for herself to do a hairdressing course at the Colchester Institute.

She then joined Colchester based salon Alter Ego and found her perfect home.

“We’re like a family at the salon and I loved being part of the team from the minute I joined,” she said.

“It was when I came to work at Alter Ego that I first visited Salon and I was determined that, one day, I would be up on the stage.”

For hairdressers across the world Salon International is the best loved and most important event in the industry calendar.

Salon International has been running for well over 30 years, and the annual event provides a vehicle for global hair brands to show off their wares, new products to get a glitzy launch and the most talented hair artists to show off their skills.

For two ex-Central/Joshua Galvin learners, the 2018 show was especially important because it saw them both make their Salon International stage debut.

Once at Alter Ego, Verity started working with Central. She loved every minute of her training and found she had a particular passion for colour.

She said: “I love working with colour and when celebrities first started to dye their hair bright pinks, blues and greens I immediately wanted to try the same thing with my clients.”

The response to Verity’s colour wizardry was incredible and she soon developed a reputation as the go-to girl for creative colour! Her instagram account drew interest from all across the region and also caught the eye of Eddie Renda Eddie runs the Hair Passion company which offers a range of colour and colour support products.

Since launching the product in the UK, he has been building an art team to showcase his products and thought Verity would be a good fit for the brand.

34. Verity Clarke

Throwing her very much in at the deep end, Eddie suggested that Verity join the Art Team on stage at Salon International! She accepted the challenge and took to the stage over the course of two days wowing audiences with both her colour work and styling.

She added: “Salon was better than I could have imagined. The buzz was incredible and, to share a stage with artists as passionate about colour as me, was the best feeling.”

It might have been her Salon debut but, according to Eddie, Verity delivered like a seasoned pro.

“Verity was so confident on stage which meant her presentations came across really well,” says Eddie.

“She drew a really big crowd and showed exactly how well our products work.”

Her skill and professionalism has won Verity a coveted place in the Hair Passion Art Team and she can look forward to more exciting adventures with the brand.

She said: “For me Salon International gave me a unique opportunity to really show what I can do. As a result, I will now be working with a brilliant colour product and can look forward to developing my colour work and career.”

TYLER PETERS STARTING OVER

Starting a new career in your thirties could be daunting, but Tyler Peters ensured that through hard work and dedication he was swiftly on the road to success.

Having worked in PR and social media management, Tyler decided he wasn’t happy and decided at the age of 31 on a career change.

“I created a mood board full of things that made me happy, “ he says. “It included films, food, stationery, my nieces, art and cutting hair.”

Having narrowed down his list, he decided that hairdressing was his best option as he enjoyed the craft of cutting hair and believed it offered him the chance to create a brand and legacy.

He added: “I always enjoyed working with hair ever since I cut my sister’s hair when I was four-yearsold! At university I would always be the one shaving everyone’s head and my own hair required quite a lot of work.”

As soon as he realised he wanted to make hair his career, Tyler reached out and spoke to those he admired within the industry. He found everyone friendly and supportive which made him feel happy about his new career choice.

“Everyone in the industry is so supportive and helpful,” he added. “That made me feel vey happy about working in the industry.”

Kevin Luchmun, a well deserved recipient of the British Men’s Hairdresser title 2013/14, was an early mentor and supporter as was Joe Mills who employed Tyler to work at Joe and Co. barbershop in Soho.

He was part of the Ruffians Art team who appeared on the HJ Men’s stage and he loved every second.

Watching people flock to the stage to take shots of his models was particularly satisfying.

While he was working at Joe and Co. he completed his NVQ level 2 barbering award with the Joshua Galvin Academy team and was thrilled to finally achieve a recognised maths qualification.

The chance to see other stylists at work also made the event memorable and the Salon experience is one he will treasure.

He said: “I failed my maths exam twice while at school so it is a credit to the JG team that I finally passed and now have something to show for it.”

Having worked as an assistant at Blue Tit in Dalston perfecting his men’s hairdressing skills Tyler did several trade tests and was offered a job in August 2017 at Ruffians in Shoreditch.

Yet again, Tyler’s choice of workplace was influenced by his admiration for Tommy Cunliffe who manages the Shoreditch branch of Ruffians.

He said: “I really like Tommy’s approach to managing the salon and since I have been here, I ‘ve created lots of looks for both men and women. For me there is a gender fluidity with hair so, as long as someone is after short hair, I’m happy to help.”

Having demonstrated at Barber Connect and the Central/JG photographic competition finals, Tyler’s Salon International debut was not his first stage appearance, but it is certainly a career highlight.

Having made a dramatic career swap because he wanted to be happy, Tyler’s future career moves will be based once again on the happiness factor.

“In terms of what’s next,” he said “ I will take into account the three things that make me happy: hair, travel and being around good people.”

The plan to travel is very much linked to Tyler’s desire to learn more about hair in different cultures with a variety of heritages.

He added: “I want to reach a stage in my career where I can literally do hair for anyone from anywhere in the world. I want to be equipped to cut any hair type which, as well as being very satisfying, makes good business sense.”

Having spent all his working life immersed in the world of hair, top stylist Andrew Jose uses his lengthy and successful career to find solutions to current problems.

As an Ambassador for TIGI he is also passionate about sharing product knowledge with fellow professionals as well as demonstrating his skills and style of work.

As a hairdresser who is still as relevant and successful as he was when he first launched his own salon 30 years ago, Andrew has worked through pretty much every scenario you can imagine and uses those experiences to help him every day.

When he was 18-years-old, Andrew’s dad gave him the choice of a motorbike or a course at the legendary Vidal Sassoon Academy. Luckily Andrew opted for the latter and has never looked back.!

He said: “One of the great benefits of being older is, when you have a problem, you look to the past for answers.”

Another benefit of such a long and varied career is having immense knowledge which Andrew is passionate about sharing with the next generation of stylists.

He is very much a hands on educator and works closely with staff from Joshua Galvin nurturing and developing young talent within his salon.

He loved his stint at Sassoon but after 10 years, during which he became the head of education, he knew the time was right to branch out on his own.

His opened his first salon in Charlotte Street and he also runs salons in Hyper Hyper in Kensignton, Prague and Salt Lake City USA. Having worked with both commercial and professional hair brands, Andrew has a unique insight into the industry and remains as passionate as ever about hairdressing.

And it’s a passion that he loves to share both with the public and fellow professionals. His consumer book ‘Love your Hair’ sold 100,000 copies and he regularly takes to the stage at events such as the

acclaimed Tribu-te shows to showcase his cutting and present his work live on stage.

His collections are always well received and he continues to create exciting hair looks. His dedication to his craft has meant he has been nominated six times for British Hairdresser of the Year.

He credits winning the 1990 Vogue Magazine Salon of the Year with putting his salon well and truly on the map but, this is just one of many highlights of his long and varied carer.

With his penchant for embracing new ideas and ways of working, it comes as no surprise that in 2000 Andrew’s show at Salon International was the first ever to be streamed live via the internet!

This is another first which still excites him to this day and he continues to incorporate new ideas and ways of communicating into his work.

As someone who sees a strong connection between art and hairdressing, Andrew is inspired by many things. He loves the photography of Nick Knight and admires many fellow hairdressers including Syd Hayes, Guido Palau and Eugene Souleiman.

But what really motivates him is sharing his skill, experience and passion with his young staff.

Having been chosen for the TIGI Inspirational Youth programme stylist Evelina Lundgren now works with Andrew on stage. Now Andrew hopes that Joshua Galvin learner, and two times winner of the photographic competition, Jessica Robinson, can also go on to win a place on the TIGI programme.

Having worked alongside and helped educate some of today’s most successful hairdressers, Andrew believes the most important part of developing your skills is to learn something new every day.

He said: “Young hairdressers have to take a responsibility for their education. Every day it is important to choose to learn something new and really push yourself.”

Seizing every opportunity that is presented is also important. “You can only find out what you like by trying as much as possible, “ Andrew added.

Creating beautiful hair every day is still high on Andrew’s list of priorities. He isn’t swayed by trends or fashions but, instead, studies the face of each individual client to see what style would work best.

He added: “I find a sweet spot on a woman’s face and I cut her hair according to that so ultimately, she will look her best.”

As Andrew says, celebrating the individual and creating bespoke looks to flatter every client might not build a chain, but it is the foundation upon which Andrew Jose was founded 30 years ago and it’s still going strong to this day.

When Jessica Robinson took first place in the level two What’s Hot category of the 2017 Central Photographic competition she went back to her salon inspired to achieve more success. And more success came her way, as she took the top spot in the level three What’s Hot category in the 2018 competition!

WINNING STREAK CONTINUES FOR ANDREW JOSE LEARNER

Here Jessica tells us more about her exciting career to date.

Central: Did you always want to be a hairdresser?

Jessica: Well I started out as a dancer and worked in musical theatre when I left school. I performed in West End shows and was a backing dancer on X Factor!

Central: How did you get into hairdressing?

Jessica: I always liked doing hair so I decided to change my career path and joined my first salon. I was lucky enough to meet people who worked at Andrew Jose and decided that it would be the perfect place to learn. My career has really developed here and I have learnt so much, often just by watching Andrew at work.

Central: What is your favourite part of the job?

Jessica: Seeing happy, satisfied clients takes some beating. I also enjoy the process of learning. You find yourself working on something new and then it suddenly clicks into place. I love that feeling!

Central: Who are your hair heros?

Jessica: I love Anne Veck’s work because it is so imaginative.

Central: What are your career goals?

Jessica: I have learnt so much since arriving at this salon and I now get a lot of pleasure out of doing some teaching, so I’d like to do more education.

I also enjoy seeing my name out there, so more session work would be nice.

Central: What have been the best jobs you have done outside the salon?

Jessica: I worked backstage with the Andrew Jose team at the Edeline Lee show at London Fashion Week and I did a shoot for a national newspaper showing how to incorporate scarves into your hair.

Both jobs were fabulous and great experience.

Central: What advice would you give to anyone just starting their hairdressing career?

Jessica: Be the best assistant you can possibly be.

Strive for perfection in everything you do, from making the coffee to folding the towels. Once you make a point of doing things right, it will reflect in your styling and you will be the best at what you do.

GROUP ANNUAL AWARDS A Wealth of apprentice talent was on show at the Haringtons Hairdressing Group annual H Awards show.

Apprentices from the hairdressing group’s 12 salons created a stunning range of hair cuts, styles and colours on models who were judged by top industry professionals. Central have been working in partnership with Haringtons since 2008 supporting their apprenticeship programme.

Once the looks had been primped to perfection and judging was complete, the models delighted a packed audience when they took to the catwalk.

Prizes were then presented by Bev Rowe, National Account Technical Manager at L’Oreal; Nathan Walker, International Technical Director and Head of Technical Education at Trevor Sorbie and Errol Douglas MBE. Haringtons’ Directors, Elaine Smith, Robert Smith and David Lambert were also on hand to congratulate the winners.

The much coveted Apprentice of the year award went to Year 3 Apprentice, Bethany Webb from Haringtons in Beaconsfield. Learners spend three years on the apprentice training scheme, learning every aspect of what it takes to become a top hairdresser.

Central Training Group Chairman Martin Kolton, MBE, was delighted to be in the audience watching the show and believes the commitment shown by Haringtons to an outstanding training programme shines through in the work displayed.

He said: “It was so encouraging to see such a fantastic standard of work produced by hairdressers at the start of their career.

“Not only was the craftsmanship impressive, I was struck by the fantastic creativity shown by the apprentices in terms of how the looks had been conceived.

“It was such an encouraging and positive show in terms of the future of hairdressing.”

CHRIS TAYLOR OWN BOSS

GOAL SETTING THAT BUILDS BUSY SALONS Opening his own salon when he was barely into his twenties provided a real challenge for Chris Taylor but passion, hard work and youth all helped ensure it was a success.

Once he arrived at Woo Hair & Beauty in Clifftown Road, Southend, he started working with apprentices developing their skills and realised he was ready to develop a team of his own.

While some hairdressers are driven by ambitions to travel, work backstage at shows or create camera ready hair, Chris has always harboured ambitions to be a salon owner and his own boss.

“I loved working with younger stylists and helping them develop their skills,” he added. “I looked around for the best place to open my own salon and Rayleigh seemed the best option.”

Leaving school at 16, Chris went straight into hairdressing having experienced a taster day at Central Hairdressing Academy.

When Chris opened his Rayleigh salon in the High Street 2006, the town had not had a new salon for some time. He started with 12 styling chairs and soon increased that number and was working to full capacity in a big site.

He said: “I went along to try it out and found I had a real knack for it and enjoyed working with hair.”

Starting his career at John Sturgeon salon in Leigh, Chris worked steadily through his NVQ qualifications gaining a level three in hairdressing.

He embraced every aspect of the training and enjoyed taking part in competitions.

Eager to learn more about the craft, Chris worked at a variety of salons across south east Essex and pushed himself with each move to increase his skill set.

Initially, like any new salon business, there was an influx of clients but Chris realised that keeping them required dedication, hard work and tons of energy.

He said: “I’m glad I opened my first salon at such a young age. I had lots of energy which I needed to grow the business, work on training the team and basically doing everything else.”

When he needed help with external training, Chris was happy to turn to his Central roots and he believes working in partnership with Central has been instrumental to the success of his salons.

Eager to push themselves, his staff love rising to challenges such as the annual Central photographic competition and Chris is keen to find new ways for them to push existing boundaries.

Having the support of his family has also been a strength. Chris comes from a hairdressing family and for several years, his sister has worked in the business and been a huge help.

This year, he plans to enter the prestigious L’Oreal Colour Trophy and believes that, win or lose, the experience alone will be a huge learning curve.

With the success of the Rayleigh salon, Chris looked to expand and opened a second salon in Alexandra Street, Southend, in 2016.

He soon realised that being based in a different town, he could not simply use the Rayleigh salon as a model and had to work hard to understand his new market.

Facing lots of challenges including recruiting the right team, Chris realised he had to utilise new channels such as social media, particularly Instagam, to sell his salon to potential staff as well as clients.

Strengthening his on-line presence increased his profile within the region and meant he was able to put together a strong team to work in the new salon. This in turn meant the business grew steadily and is now stronger than ever.

At the start of every year, Chris looks at the goals he has set from the previous year and is thrilled when he is able to see which have been reached.

And, while he will continue to do this to push and motivate himself, he now recognises that the time is right to consolidate what he has achieved.

Right now it’s all about continuing to grow both salons and, most importantly, his talented young team.

He added: “It all comes down to my belief in setting goals. You might not achieve them first time round but, the important thing is to keep trying and believe that in the end, you’ll get there!”
