International Education Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2020 September 20th Green Bay Welcome Orientation

It was a beautiful sunny day for our Welcome Orientation at Green Bay! Students took full advantage of the many exciting activities, while soaking up one of the last summer days. From swimming to sandcastles on the beach, kayaking and paddle boarding, the students really enjoyed their time on the lake. The outdoor ceramics station was also a huge hit and every student was able to take home their artistic creation as a keepsake. It was truly incredible to see how creative our students are! Another popular activity was the onsite cartoonist set up on the field for students to have caricatures sketched. The likeness of some of the cartoons was really something to see! A light lunch was provided to everyone and the surprise visit by the Scooter's Ice Cream Truck was the perfect way to end the day. We had so much fun getting to know our new students, as well as catching up with some of our returning students. Many positive memories were made, and we want to extend a big thank you to all of our homestay families for your support to make it all possible!

OCTOBER ACTIVITIES October 28th Myra Canyon Adventure "Scare" Park Students be sure to save the date for this spooky Halloween themed activity on Wednesday, October 28th! More activity details to follow in the coming weeks, but you won't want to miss what's lurking in the trees at Myra Canyon in October. There will be age appropriate fun and scares for everyone!

September Family Activity – Golfing at 19 Greens We hope everyone enjoyed golfing together at 19 Greens this month! We've heard from students who played a round and they were so excited to get outdoors and try something new. Host families and students - Be sure to share any action shots you have with us or anything you've experienced as a family exploring the Okanagan!

The PSIBC Virtual Fair is an amazing opportunity to research post-secondary opportunities within BC and gather all sorts of information! World Teachers' Day – Monday, October 5, 2020 Held annually on the 5th of October since 1994, World Teachers’ Day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. World Teachers’ Day is co-convened in partnership with UNICEF, the International Labour Organization and Education International. Thank you to our Central Okanagan teachers and teachers around the world for their tremendous efforts and the formation of educated citizens.

3 ways to participate What’s your #? Project & Pitch

The heart of the program, the Sustainable Development Project and Pitch is open to all students in the Central Okanagan in grades 8-12. It is a team based, creative project that addresses at least one of the UN’s 17 Global Goals. Student teams connect with a Community Partner and create an innovative solution that addresses an issue they are both passionate about. Teams are mentored along the way with local experts and leaders to build and implement a viable project. Top teams pitch live to judges and a public audience and compete for prize money to make their project a reality.

Plan B—Big Ideas in 60 Seconds!

A video elevator pitch for students K-12 who want to bring awareness to an issue related to the Global Goal they are most passionate about.

Arts for Social Change

Students K-12 are invited to create an original artistic piece reflecting the Sustainable Development Goal to which they are committed. Dance, music, spoken word, poetry, visual arts, textile arts and other art forms are encouraged.

REGISTRATION HOW-TO: 1. Click on the registration link to create an account.

2. Fill in all mandatory fields.

3. Make sure you remember your e-mail and chosen password for the platform! You'll need it to log in.

4. "Programs of Interest" → you are only able to select one option. Don't worry, you can get information about any program you wish. Just choose the one you are leaning towards at this moment.

5. Email address → use an email you will frequently check. Recruiters may need to follow up with you after the fair to answer your questions or send you information.

6. Date & Time → Select your preferred date and time for Kelowna/Vernon/Okanagan secondary schools or for a Provincial Community Event.

NOTES & HELPFUL TIPS: • Some PSIs will have more recruiters available for their local students.

• YES, you can sign up for both Oct. 5th and 6th plus any community events.

• YES, parents can sign up too!

• Recruiters and representatives are only available during the fair times.

• YES, you can still go into the booths of PSIs outside of fair times, you will be limited to downloading information and looking at the booth. Generally fairs are scheduled for the afternoons and evenings so if you need to get a document or take a look at a booth, the best option is to do that in morning.

• Please do NOT sign up for events outside of our region or the community events.
