Athlete lauded for academic, athletic accomplishments at Penn State

enn State Brandywine softball senior Haley Grossi received the John S. Egli Award as the top female studentathlete in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC). On May 19, the Monmouth Junction resident received the award, named in honor of John S. Egli, a former Penn State student-athlete, professor and coach responsible for bringing varsity athletic programs to the commonwealth campuses, according to information provided by PSUAC. To be considered for the award, a student-athlete must have had a distinguished athletic career, own a minimum grade point average of 3.0, be active in additional campus activities and exemplify high morals, leadership and outstanding character. A three-year team captain, Grossi was

a four-year starter and one of the top defenders in the PSUAC at second base and shortstop, according to the statement. She had a .974 fielding percentage in her career. At the plate, she was a .309 hitter with four home runs, 82 runs scored and 60 RBI. During her final year at Brandywine, Grossi earned USCAA All-American honorable mention laurels after hitting .352 with 23 runs scored and 16 RBI. Grossi was a First Team All-PSUAC standout and earned USCAA World Series All-Tournament Team honors as a sophomore and claimed All-PSUAC honorable mention during her freshman and senior seasons, according to the statement. During her 104-game career, Grossi led the team to three PSUAC championships and

top-five finishes at the USCAA World Series in 2018 and 2019. In the classroom, Grossi owned the top grade-point average by a Brandywine student-athlete at 3.98 during the 2020-21 academic year. An eight-time Dean’s List student, Grossi completed seven-straight semesters with straight-A grades and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Penn State this spring with a degree in human development and family studies, according to the statement. Grossi is a four-time PSUAC All-Academic Team honoree and earned USCAA National Academic Team recognition for the third time this spring, according to the statement. Polos will succeed Anthony Caputo, police director from New Brunswick, who is the founding member and founding chairman of the organization since its inception 10 years ago. “On behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, I offer our sincerest congratulations to Jim Polos on being elected as Middlesex County Crime Stoppers’ new chairman and thank him for his continued service to the residents of Middlesex County,” Board of County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios said in the prepared statement. “Polos’ commitment to the greater community and incredible array of skills will add to an already strong board and keep Crime Stoppers a viable and effective agency.” Polos’ involvement with the community and law enforcement includes being a member of the New Jersey Police Training Commission, a member of the NJ State Chiefs of Police Association Departmental Accreditation Team, a volunteer emergency management director for Highland Park, a member of NJ Department of Homeland Security Interfaith Advisory Council, and currently the executive director of the Middlesex County Improvement Authority. “It is truly an honor to now serve as chairman, and I look forward to building on the successes of this essential organization while charting new opportunities to serve our county for the next 10 years. The work of Crime Stoppers in coordination with law enforcement and community-based organizations is invaluable to help solve criminal cases which makes our communities safer places to live and work,” Polos, who is a former county freeholder, the predecessor to commissioner, said in the statement. “I am fortunate to step into a leadership position that has (Continued on page 3)
